The Details.

Kendall Bishop, who has been attending lessons for three years, rides with the help of volunteers during her session Sunday at Ready Set Ride. Riding sessions, conducted in groups or individually, provide students a chance to socialize while also receiving therapy.

“My son really benefits from this type of therapy and the structure of the lessons, as well as coming and being around people in a community also helps him,” said Chris Dunsmore. “Clay may not be the best rider, but that doesn’t matter here.”

The facilities, which were opened in 2001, offer therapeutic horseback riding sessions and individualized activities to help ease burdens. RSR, a therapeutic facility on Essington Road that opened in 2001, serves students as young as 3 from around Chicagoland. Through work with the horses, children are encouraged to learn independence and to work on motor skills. “When we first started, he was slouched over, but after the first eight-week session, Jimmy was sitting up straight and showing emotion,” said Chris Bajner, whose wheelchair-bound son has been attending lessons for six years. “We’ve seen a real improvement, and we love it here.” Students with varying disabilities are welcome here, and smiles abound during their sessions. All students receive therapy fit to their needs, either individually or in groups. The use of horseback riding and games helps students have fun while they also, discreetly, work on being able to sit up and speak.
