The Details. New Life for Haiti members work on the roof of their fourth school in 2013, built in the village of Plaine Marie in Grand Anse, Haiti. The purpose of the most recent trip to the country was to paint this building. The organization recently started construction on its fifth school, located in the village of Moron. Volunteers were able to interact with the children from the village before they began painting. The trip, which was specifically for teen volunteers and a few adult volunteers and staff, is the second of its kind. (Photos Courtesy of New Life for Haiti)

The GreenVillage Program series, sponsored by the village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Public Library District, returns July 14 at 7 p.m. at the Plainfield Public Library with a discussion on the use of natural resources to create a positive environment inside and outside of the home. The program is an “ecologically friendly initiative,” according to the village, that incorporates a variety of plans and ordinances determined to be sensitive to the needs of the environment. The village hopes to grow the program as it continues, adding more topics and other educational programs. The series, which is in its seventh year, continues to encourage environmental awareness through different lecture and discussion events. Though some events are continued annually, such as the rain barrel workshop, and organic food and wine tasting, many of the topics for this year’s series are new. “Typically, the topics are chosen at the beginning of the year,” said Jonathan Proulx, Planner II for the village of Plainfield. “Some topics are annual standards but other topics vary from year to year to provide variety and highlight emerging topics, such as local food systems and hydraulic fracturing.” This month’s topic, entitled “Greening Your >> see green | Page 9

INSIDE

Eleven students and seven adults returned from Haiti June 30 after painting a school in the Plaine Marie village of the country. The students and adults are volunteers from the organization New Life for Haiti, a Plainfield-based charity that aims to give all children a chance at a future by providing an education, medicine and, soon, clean water. “The look on the children’s faces and the way their eyes lit up was very powerful for the volunteers,” said Scott Derengowski, an NLH youth pastor. “It was touching, especially for the new volunteers, to see how little those in the village have.” The new school, which was completed October 2013, is the first in the village, but it joins schools in other villages like Mafranc, where there are two schools, and Plik, where there is one. NLH sponsors many trips to Haiti, which is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. These various trips have resulted in the construction of four schools, with a fifth currently in construction in the village of Moron. Many of the students who went on the trip, which ran June 23 to 30, were returning volunteers, though some new faces were also included in the group. Activities during the week included a hike up to Plaine Marie, which is located in the mountains, and a gathering of the students with village children.
