By rachel hinton FOR THE ENTERPRISE July 12 marked the Guardian Games, a collaboration between Pink Heals and Crossfit Plainfield, to support those affected by cancer. People of all ages and of varying fitness levels participated in the event, gathering at Crossfit Plainfield for prizes, raffles, and exercises to fight cancer. The event, though similar to Relay for Life, involved exercises besides walking, and the causes, while similar, are also different. “This is different than other fitness events. There is a half mile run, push-ups and sit-ups, weightlifting, and a fire truck pull, but there aren’t any ribbons,” said Matt Fleck, president of the Joliet area chapter of Pink Heals. “This isn’t about supporting one cancer over another; we want to get the community out to support.” Pink Heals supports women, as well as men, and their families that have been affected by cancer. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event go directly back into the community, and surrounding communities, to help those in need. Outside of the Crossfit facilities, Pink Heals’ fire trucks and police cars waited. All the trucks are named after people who have battled cancer. After the Guardian Games, those in attendance would be making a home visit in one of the fire trucks, which stands as a living memorial to those fighting cancer and those who have lost their battle.

The Details.

Pink was the color of the day at the July 12 Guardian Games in Plainfield as several fire trucks were painted and named after women who are battling or lost their lives to cancer. One of Pink Heals fire trucks at the Guardian Games event Saturday, July 12. Many of the trucks waiting just outside the Crossfit gym were adorned with the names of loved ones onto the trucks, allowing them to live on through these living memorials. Participants of the Guardian Games did various exercises while raising awareness for women and cancer. Teams competed to see who could do the most sit-ups, pull-ups, and other exercises in a 30-minute interval. (PHOTOS BY RACHEL HINTON)
