Lemuel “James” Dahan said it was an emotional time for him when Operation Welcome You Home brought a procession of American Legion Riders, a fire truck, police car and other well-wishers to his Shorewood home Saturday morning to present him with a gift for his service to the country. “It’s really nice to see so many friends and veterans out here,” he said to the group gathered in front of his home. “I thank you all.” “We’re here to thank you today, James, for your service,” OWYH founder Donna Morsovillo replied. Morsovillo presented Dahan with a new John Deere riding mower and snowblower attachment, purchased with funds raised through the organization’s annual 5K runs. Dahan and his wife Erin just moved into the home – their first house – and Morsovillo said she knew a mower was something the family needed. Dahan joined the United States Marine Corps in 2002. By Megan Patsavas For The Enterprise Children, adults, and even a few fourlegged friends gathered at the Village Green on Saturday afternoon for the grand finale of Plainfield Public Library’s summer reading program. The program’s theme for this summer, ‘Paws to Read,’ was apparent throughout the celebration: There were animal temporary tattoos, an elephant bounce house, and volunteers from Plainfield’s Help Save Pets with some dogs that were in need of homes. “It’s been a really, really good summer and we’ve had a lot of fun,” said Veronica DeFazio, head of youth services at the library. DeFazio added about 4,000 people registered for the reading program, almost 3,000 of which were children (from those who can’t yet read, through high schoolaged participants). Though the library hosted summer reading-related events throughout the season – such as weekly storytimes at Village Green Park – the grand finale had “grand” in its name for a reason.Crowds watched performances by Ac-Rock, a local a cappella group, and a juggler on stilts. Attendees also walked around Village Green Park, stopping for Culver’s sundaes, slushies, to play bingo, craft, take a photo on an inflatable tidal wave or oversized chair, and engage in other activities. The Plainfield Park District had its own station at the event as well.
