Westmont. Celebrate, educate and encourage compassion and awareness between area families and their pets. There will be plenty of vendors with treats, pet toys, pet photos, dog training information, rescue information and much more! There will be demonstrations from the Windy City Flyers, the Chicago Herpetological Society, Dogs and Harmony Nosework and many more. Look for raffles or sign up for a pet award: Best in Show, Best Costume, Largest Pet, Smallest Pet, Most unusual pet. Bring a picnic, bring your pet & enjoy the day.

SEPTEMBER 13 • Beecher Goodenow Grove Fall Fest.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve, Beecher. Pumpkin painting, hayrack rides, 4-H Farm Expo with Live Animals live music, food and country market vendors, wood carver, climbing wall, America’s Children’s Museum on Wheels: StoryBus and numerous children’s activities are all a part of the fun. There will be a vendor area with food and other goodies. Visitors can also explore the natural play areas around Plum Creek Nature Center. Activities take place along paved trails and over natural, uneven terrain.

Autumn Family Fun Fest. Plainfield Park District hosts the fest at Normantown Equestrian Center from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 27. All are invited to partake in pony rides, face painting, games and crafts. Registration, which is only for children, ends Sept. 22. $15 per child for Residents and $19 per child for Non-Residents.

SEPTEMBER 28 • Woodridge Indian Summer Festival. Noon to 5

p.m. at Castaldo Park, 3024 71st St., Woodridge. Take a hayride to Castaldo Park from the Community Center to enjoy family and children activities. Concessions will be available for sale. OCTOBER 4 • New Lenox Cruise the Creek Bike Ride and Fest. Noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, Hickory Creek

Six-mile bike ride on the Hickory Creek Bikeway and Old Plank Road paved trail and some sidewalks. After the ride, enjoy free family entertainment and activities, including a petting zoo and pumpkin painting. Food will be available for purchase. Check-in for pre-registered riders will begin at 11:30 a.m., and same-day registration will open at noon. This event is open to all ages, but it is recommended for individual riders to be at least 11 years of age. All participants are encouraged to wear a helmet.

SEPTEMBER 21 • Romeoville Founder’s Day Parade. Sept. 21, 1 p.m. lineup; 2 p.m. kickoff. Show your Romeoville pride at the annual Founder’s Day Parade. Whether you are watching or participating, you are sure to have a great time. All community organizations, clubs, and businesses are encouraged to participate. Show your

Halloween fun. Enjoy dinner, followed by a spooky firelight Halloween story time that will put you in the mood for the Monsters Ball. OCTOBER 17 • Romeoville Fun Frights by Firelight. 7 to 8:30

p.m. Oct. 17, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Registration required: 815-886-1467. Stories, games, and treats. Dress appropriately (with your favorite holiday costume and mask, if you like). Weather permitting, there is a short walk along a paved surface to the outdoor amphitheater where the program will be held. If the weather does not cooperate, we’ll head indoors in an accessible facility for the festivities.

OCTOBER 17 • Niles Monsters Ball. 6 p.m. Howard Leisure Center, Niles. This special event is perfect for the whole family who want to experience some

Zombie for a Day. 1 to 4 p.m. at the Westmont Public Library, 428 N Cass Ave. Ever wonder what you would look like as a zombie? Come to the library to find out! Circus FX will use special effects makeup to give teens the face of a zombie just in time to visit the area haunted houses. Registration is required. Register at westmontlibrary. org.

OCTOBER 18-19, 24-25 • Plainfield Village of Screamfield. Oct. 18-19 and 24-25 in the basement of the Plainfield Police Department, 14300 Coil Plus Drive (off 143rd Street, between Route 30 and Van Dyke Road). Full haunts, which are intended to scare, are available 6-10 p.m. Oct. 17-18 and 24-25. The monster-free, family-friendly haunting is planned 2-5 p.m. Oct. 18, 25 and 26. Cost is $10 for the full haunt; $5 for family-friendly. Children ages 6 and younger are admitted free. All proceeds benefit the students and staff of Plainfield School District 202 through the Foundation for Excellence.

OCTOBER 18 • Lockport Haunted Boat Rides. 6 to 8 p.m. Oct.

OCTOBER 24 • Romeoville Halloween Fest. Oct. 24, 6 to 9 p.m.

Village Park. Join the Romeoville Recreation Department and the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce for a spooktacular time! Some of the spine-tingling activities include a trick or treat trail, craft area, moon jumps, and a children’s entertainer.

OCTOBER 24-25 • Woodridge Haunted Forest Walk. 6:30 to 9:30

p.m. on Friday, and 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Community Center, 2600 Center Drive, Woodridge. Hawthorne Hill Woods will be transformed into a thrill of scary scenes, complete with ghosts, ghouls, and all sorts of creatures that slither and groan. The Saturday afternoon session will be more suitable for children 9 and under and the faint of heart (parental discretion). All participants will be taken to the haunted forest on hayrides. Parking is available on Carleton Drive, at Village Hall and at the Woodridge Public Library. Drop off/pick-up location is on the west end of the Community Center parking lot. OCTOBER 25 • Westmont Haunted Forest Tour. 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Twin Lakes Park and Twin Lakes Woods. Twin Lakes Woods will come alive for one very magical, mystical night! Narrators will tell you the story of the haunted woods as they conduct guided tours on hayrides. See link below for directions.

OCTOBER 25 • Niles Halloween Parade & Party. 10 a.m. Oak Park, Niles. Get your costume ready for the annual Halloween Parade and Party. Join us for a bewitching stroll from Oak Park (Main Street and Ottawa) to Grennan Heights. Once at Grennan Heights there will be ghouly games, ghastly goodies, and spooky surprises! Oct. 25, Whalon Lake Dog Park, Royce Road, west of Route 53, Naperville/Bolingbrook. No registration required. Bring your beloved companion or if you are in the market for a furry friend, then let the multitude of rescue organizations cater to your doggie needs. Festivities include a costume contest, prizes, pet vendors, many free pet services including nail clipping, micro-chipping, wellness checks, free giveaways, doggy games, and food vendors. Outdoor Flea Market. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hummer Park, 4833 Fairview Ave., Downers Grove. This popular outdoor market plays host to over 100 vendors from crafts and antiques to baby clothes and collectibles. Vendor registration fees allow a 10x10 space on a first-come, first-served basis beginning May 19 for residents and June 2 for non-residents. Find a map of currently available spaces at the Lincoln Center. Detailed information is mailed to vendors two weeks prior to the event. Rain date is Sept. 13.

noon at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave., Dowers Grove. Enjoy a guided tour of the historic Tivoli Theatre! Learn about the evolution of the theatre over its 86-year history. Registration is not required, simply visit the theatre between 9 a.m. and noon for a tour.

Westmont Stuff a Truck Food Drive. The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and

Tourism Bureau and People’s Resource Center are partnering for a community-wide food drive. There is a big need for hunger relief in Westmont and Westmont Stuff a Truck will be a great way for the community to work together and have fun for a great goal. Society will take a step back in time with a day trip to Pontiac Sept. 18. Stops will include the Livingston County War Museum, Route 66 Association Illinois Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Yost Family Queen Anne Style Home to name a few.

SEPTEMBER 20 • Shorewood Fall Fishing Derby. 8 a.m. Sept. 20, Four Seasons Park, Shorewood. Registration 8 a.m.; first hook in the water at 9. Prizes given for most fish caught and biggest fish. Open to children under 12 with parent or guardian present. Free event sponsored by the Village of Shorewood.
