Downers North OFFENSE The Trojans’ offense will be centered around quarterback David Edwards for a third straight year. A Wisconsin recruit at the tight end position, Edwards (6-foot, 7-inches, 240 pounds) is a dual-threat quarterback. He battled injuries late last year and throughout the playoffs. In 12 games last year, the Trojans put up 249 points, but will be without receivers Vontae Diggs and Richard Olekanma this year, as well as backup quarterback Sebastian Calvino.

DEFENSE Downers North had one of the top defenses in the state last year, limiting Mt. Carmel to seven points in the playoffs and allowing just 14 points in three

playoff games. For the season the Trojans allowed just 130 points in 12 games. However, this year they will be without their defensive leaders as both Diggs and Olekanma have graduated, leaving a void on the ends.

OVERALL For the past two years, Downers North has been able to overcome a 5-4 regular season to advance to the state quarterfinals in Class 7A. The schedule won’t be easy this year, but if they can sneak into the playoffs, that schedule should help them once again in the postseason. This attrition is much greater than last year though on both sides of the ball. But, if Edwards stays healthy, the potential remains

As usual in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division, there will be a host of players taking the field on Friday nights who are bound for college football programs—D-I or otherwise. And, as usual, Glenbard West will once again be the team to beat. The Hilltoppers went 11-2 last season and advanced the Class 8A state semifinals. Coach Chad Hetlet’s 2014 club doesn’t have quite the star power it has enjoyed in recent years— plus he’ll have to do without a few players early who are being suspended due to an offfield incident—but Glenbard West’s roster will be formidable nonetheless on both sides of the ball. Glenbard West’s calling card, of course, is its power running game. Donahvon Vaughn, a senior, will be getting the bulk of the handoffs from quarterback

Downers South OFFENSE The Mustangs are anchored up from by Michigan recruit Eric Swenson, a 6-foot, 5-inch, 310-pound junior lineman. On the other side of the line is Cody Becker (6-6, 225). The middle of the line is anchored by Marcus Rutledge (6-6, 275), Andrew Burton (6-1, 235) and Neil Hart (6-0, 220). Quarterback Jordan Skach is back to run the offense. He will be throwing to Max Soderlund, Reilly Heavy and tight end Joe LaCivita. Jacob Baker is expected to get the lion’s share of the carries in the backfield. Ryan Taylor is also in the running for carries and the fullbacks include TJ Simpson and Louis Maillilin.

DEFENSE The Mustangs showed improvement last year on defense and could be even stronger this year. Both defensive ends return in Caleb Konney and Jamaal Harvey.

Konney had two picks in a game against Willowbrook last year. Jeff Agnew returns in the middle and he will be joined by Tim Peiffer and Matt Duman. The linebacking corps consists of Joliet West transfer Edward Barfield, Taylor and Mike Connolly, who is being recruited by Ivy League schools. Eric Denby, the field general in the defensive backfield, and Riley Taylor lead the secondary.

OVERALL After a rare year out of the playoffs in 2012, Downers South returned to the playoffs in 2013, finishing the season 6-4. This year will be the second year under coach Mark Molinari. After a slow start to the regular season last year, the Mustangs won six of their last seven regular season games before a 36-0 playoff loss to Naperville Central. A faster start this year could lead to another West Suburban Gold title

Earlier this month, Illinoisfootballratings.com released its rankings of the toughest football conferences from 2000 to 2014. The West Suburban Silver is rated the third toughest conference in the state, while its West Suburban Conference partner, the West Suburban Gold, checks in tied for 21st with the South Suburban Blue. The WSG doesn’t get the notoriety that the WSS enjoys, but considering there are over 90 conferences in the state, it’s a very respectable ranking. Downers South, the 2001 Class 8A state champion, had been a perennial WSG champion and playoff team until 2010. Then, the Mustangs missed the playoffs for a year, but new head coach Mark Molinari’s 2013 squad got DGS back into the postseason while also staking claim to the

Proviso East - David Odom took the head coaching job last year after serving as an assistant at Benet. He’s trying his darndest to turn things around, but it’s going to be a long process. 7. Bolingbrook OFFENSE Rarely does a team have a senior quarterback returning and then move him to wide receiver to make room for the kicker to move under center. Then again, rarely does a team bring in a Hall-of-Fame coach to be its offensive coordinator. This season, Bolingbrook did both. After members of the Raiders’ staff left for job promotions, head coach John Ivlow brought in Dan Darlington, former coach at Morris and Plainfield North. Darlington took senior signal caller Quincy Woods and has him listed on the roster solely as a wide receiver with Adam Klein stepping in at quarterback. However, anyone who has seen a Darlington offense before knows to expect wrinkles and that there are most likely packages that puts Woods back under center.

DEFENSE Former state champion defensive coordinator John Urban (Naperville

Central) also joins the Raiders staff as an assistant with longtime defensive coordinator Bob Cora. While Bolingbrook lost several members of its defense a year ago, it features six D-I caliber players this year. Notre Dame bound defensive lineman Micah Dew-Treadway will anchor the Raiders up front, while senior Julian Huff (Minnesota) and junior Tuf Borland clog the middle. Senior Jacob Huff (Minnesota) and senior Armani McNulty (Ball State) return in the secondary, while senior Montini transfer and D-I recruit Isaac Lane and freshman Jordan Pringle will be added to the mix.

OVERALL While the Raiders may look different on offense with Darlington in the mix, the defense has the chance to resemble the state championship defense of 2011. The SWSC is no cake walk and Lincoln-Way East might be down on paper this season, the Raiders still have a hard time beating the Griffins

The Steelmen will be looking at several new players at the skill positions, and it won’t get any more new than freshman quarterback Zach Wisneski. “He is going to be special,” said Joliet Central coach Brett Boyter. “He has a very good arm and is a very smart player and it is amazing how much he has picked up already.” Offensively, Central returns running back/fullback Tommie Sherman and wide receiver Josh Morris, while center Ezequiel Castro anchors the line along with newcomers Jasyn Hurt, Sal Ruiz and Pablo Reyes. Michael Robinson will be at running back, while Robert Davis will be at receiver at corner back.

Boyter believes this can be the “best team on the field since our program split from Joliet Township five years ago.” “The big difference is that this year the guys really made a commitment to the weight room and the off season,” Boyter said. “Our guys are so far ahead this year of where we have been in the past and that is because of that commitment. It has been exciting in how far we have come in a short time.” Playing in the loaded SWSC, makes it hard for Central to show the growth it has had over the years. “Maybe it would be easier for the public to see the improvement, but the team looks at it as something exciting that we can play against the top teams week in and week out,” Boyter said. What the Steelmen find exciting is the fact that they will play a home night game at Central this season for the first time in the 113 years of the school. “We want this to be the norm, not the exception,” Boyter said.

joliet west OFFENSE

DEFENSE

Skill-wise, Joliet West lost a ton of fire power in quarterback Anthony DiNardo (1,898 yards, 20 TDs), wide receiver Niko Messino (53 catches, 879 yards, 9 TDs) and a host of runners. Mitch Dolak, a senior who served as DiNardo’s backup a season ago is competing with junior Alex Tibble to become West’s signal caller. Senior wide receiver Christian Griswold (5-10, 175) will return to catch passes from whoever wins the QB job. Up front, the Tigers do return their entire offensive line in seniors Ethan Bohanek (6-1, 245), Rick Dove (6-1, 265), Ray Betancourt (6-1, 235), Jarrale Daniels (6-1, 265) and Scotty Blankenship (6-2, 275). The Tigers put up 277 points last year.

Defensively, West brings back four seniors in Houston Thomas, a 5-10, 265-pound defensive lineman, Nolan Morrow, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive end, Zack Dulski, a 5-11, 185 pound linebacker and Collin Talkie, a 6-1, 80-pound free safety. They will look to help improve the defense, which allowed 293 points last year.

OVERALL Joliet West was 3-6 last season and the SouthWest Suburban Conference has not gotten an easier. Even with all the big boys left up front, the Tigers are in need of finding the skill position players to take advantage of all the work being done in the trenches. Claiming their two nonconfernece games will be key, as it is hard to go from 3-6 to 6-3 in the SWSC Blue with the

DEFENSE

A new coach brings new looks this season as Lockport will feature a spread offense that looks to run the football with new boss Dan Starkey. Senior Jeremy Quade, who saw time at quarterback last year and junior Deiondre Taylor, a converted running back, are competing at quarterback. The plan is for both to have an impact on the field in some way. Whoever is under center will be protected by a line led by 6-foot, 4-inch, 315-pound junior Matt Chmielewski and senior Chris Murino. Cameron Credit, Zac Wright and Matt Skobel will see time in the backfield, while senior Sean Kelley returns at wide receiver. Cory Savage returns at fullback. Lockport will have to replace would-be three-year starter Tyler Johnson at both running back and linebacker after he tore an ACL during the summer.

Carl Strom, Jake Divita and Jordan Pollard will key the Lockport defensive line and Taylor O’Donnell is back at linebacker. Starkey says the defensive backfield will be “raw and inexperienced.”

OVERALL The Porters bring in head coach Dan Starkey from New Trier, where he went 22-18 from 2010-13, guiding the Trevians to the playoffs each season out of the CSL South. The Porters were 3-6 a year ago and Starkey looks to return them to the glory days when they were back-to-back Class 8A state championships in 2002 and ’03. “We will be a spread offense, but we want to pound the football,” Starkey said. “We want to run the ball, but we also want to be able to take what the defense gives us and play great defense and great special teams.”

southwest prairie PREVIEW Oswego still among favorites in one of most balanced conferences in state Oswego made it three straight undefeated conference championships last year, sweeping through the Southwest Prairie Conference. The Panthers had just one game last year in the conference where they won by just single digits, beating Plainfield South 3528. They won two playoff games before falling to Marist 21-7 in the quarterfinals. With junior quarterback and Division-I recruit Steven Frank leading the way, Oswego has a young, yet experienced signal caller who directed the two playoff wins last year. He is expected to have a strong offensive line to throw behind, while the defense might take a step back this year. Plainfield South escaped the 4-3 clutter of teams last year to go 5-2 and finish a solo second. minooka OFFENSE Any time you return a running back like the Indians’ Nate Gunn, the team will always be in contention. In a conference such as the Southwest Prairie Conference where teams can go from 3-6 to 6-3 in one season, Minooka is looking to ride its elite running back to playoff contention. The Indians will also have a familiar last name at the quarterback position, as sophomore Johnny Carnagio will be under center this season. Joining Carnagio and Gunn in the backfield will be returning running back Victor Turpin. James Lang returns to anchor the Indians’ offensive line.

DEFENSE On defense, linebacker Jeff Klank returns after being the leading tackler for Minooka last

season with 89 total tackles (43 solo). Brad Daniel returns on the defensive line and Cameron Dirck will lead the secondary. Blake Parzych, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 220 pound defensive lineman joins the team, as does junior linebacker Carson Oughton.

OVERALL With a young quarterback and newcomers being asked to step up, Minooka coach Paul Forsythe says overall experience will be a weakness of the Indians this season, but that team chemistry will be one of the strengths of the squad. The goal for Minooka this season is to win the Southwest Prairie Conference and get back in the postseason mix. The last time the Indians were in the playoffs was the 2011-12 season. Like it has the last two years,

Akwasi Aikins is a threeyear player for the Wildcats.

Plainfield Central is led on offense by three-year starter Roger Thigpen at running back. He is joined in the backfield by 6-foot, 4-inch senior quarterback Matt Gurke and fellow three-year starter Akwasi Aikins at fullback. Khamari Montgomey, the defending Class 3A state champ in the 400 and 200-meter dash, is at wide receiver. Leading the way on the line of scrimmage are seniors Zach Zolnerowicz (6-0, 230-pound guard), Jordan Middleton (6-1, 260-pound guard) and Matt Houghton (6-1, 245-pound tackle). Newcomers to the offensive squad this year include running back Andrew Black, wideout Jon Perez, center Taylor Schmidt (6-2, 300) and offensive tackle and guard Tom Winter (6-0, 230). Last year the Wildcats put up 81 points for the season.

DEFENSE The line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball is

paced by seniors Nick Petrou, Bill Dodge and Tyler Whitney. The linebacking core is led by seniors Luke Derouin and Derick Bidley. The secondary is anchored by Thigpen and Aikins. Newcomers on the defensive side are end Christian Ruff, linebackers Jake Johnson and Trevor Smeets and corner Isaiah Dunson.

OVERALL After an 0-9 season last year, the Wildcats are set to have a much improved season. Just two years removed from the postseason, Central suffered through an injury-plagued season last year. However, that allowed a lot of younger players to see the field this year, which should pay off. “The offense and defense look to be much improved from last year,” Central coach John Jackson said. “We have many returning starters mixed with talented juniors. The kids have been working hard in the offseason and appear to be

Plainfield east OFFENSE There are several key returners on offense for the Bengals. Quarterback Cole Kotopka is back after completing 94-of-182 passes for 1,596 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. He also ran for five scores. He is joined in the backfield by Jake Mayon, who had 1,001 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. He also had eight catches for 122 yards and three scores in the air. Wynston Wright returns after running for 96 yards last year. Branden Rivera is the main returning receiving threat after being second on the team with 384 yards last year and led the team with 18 catches. Tyler Rivera anchors the offensive line.

DEFENSE Western Michigan-bound Daniel Jackson is back on the defensive line after missing the last few games with an injury last year. Donald Manning is a junior and returns on the line. Michael McGee and Antonio Jameson lead the

linebackers, while the secondary looks strong with the return of safety Omar Salazar (4 INT) and corner Donte Hartsfield (3 INT, 2 TD). Seniors Turon Hill and Juleyan Givens add depth to the secondary. “(They are) a disciplined group that makes offenses get out of their comfort zone,” East coach Mike Romeli said. “We expect to be tough against the run, and get pressure on the quarterback which should cause turnovers.”

OVERALL The Bengals are fresh off their first playoff appearance (6-4) where they were a year ahead of schedule. This year they are led by a strong senior class that was strong as juniors. Romeli said they will have to run the ball well and keep good health this year as they are short on depth in some positions. “This is the strongest group of seniors we have ever had,” Romeli

Quintin Hoosman returns at running back for the Tigers.

Plainfield North was very young on offense last year and this year it brings back several starters. Junior J.D. Ekowa is back at quarterback with a year of experience under his belt and is joined by Quintin Hoosman, a senior running back who started the season last year as the starter before injury. Junior Kyle Speas is back at tight end, while a senior-laden offensive line is led by Syracuse recruit Cody Conway, Bowling Green commit Jack Kramer, A.J. Wachs and Nick Wolf. Brandon Knox and Zach Jarosz are expected to contribute at wideout. “Offensively we should be able to mix things up and utilize quite a few different players,” North coach Tim Kane said. “We have some very solid skill players to go with our experienced linemen.”

DEFENSE Lineman Jack Kramer and defensive backs Kyle Pursel

and Jeremy Goodson are back to pace the defense. They are joined by newcomers Seth Argast (lineman), Zach Shelton (linebacker) and Jarosz (DB). “We don’t have as much experience back on this side but expect this unit to produce good numbers,” Kane said. “Eliminating mistakes that lead to big plays will be critical for this unit to be successful.”

OVERALL The Tigers missed out on the playoffs last year after a 3-6 season. They do lose running back Marcus Edwards, who transferred out of state, but return several key members on the offense. If the game is won at the line of scrimmage, the Tigers will be tough to beat throughout the year. “After a difficult season plagued by injuries, we are looking to a strong year with some players who gained valuable experience,” Kane said. “Our offensive line and

plainfield south OFFENSE The Cougars switched to a spread offense in recent years and that is expected to continue. However, they will have to replace quarterback Kody Voda and star running back Joshua Harris, who finished last year with more than 2,000 total yards and 26 total touchdowns. Braden Lentini will be taking over the reigns at quarterback after throwing for 213 yards and three touchdowns last year. He will be protected up from by seniors Joe Miggins, Thomas Grady and Nathan Karas. The Cougars put up 306 points last year.

DEFENSE Perhaps the biggest void to fill this year throughout the coverage area is the loss of Clifton Garrett to Louisiana State University. The next linebacker in line for the Cougars is junior Danny Saracco, who had 144

tackles, four for a loss, and one interception last year as a sophomore. Fellow junior Joe Colon leads the secondary. The defense allowed 276 points last year.

OVERALL Plainfield South (6-4) returned to the playoffs last year after a year break. While they lose a large amount of players on both sides of the ball, the Cougars do have some returners and will be in contention for another playoff berth this year. “We want to improve each week and compete for the conference title and qualify for the playoffs,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “The keys to success are tackling, turnovers, tempo and toughness.” The Cougars are hoping to be in the mix in the Southwest Prairie Conference again this year. “The SPC has become incredibly

romeoville OFFENSE All-Conference quarterback Kelvin Jones returns to lead what could be a talented group. This will be his third year under center and he is ready. “We are putting in the work every day and trying to go farther in the playoffs than last year,” he said. “I feel really comfortable out there, the coaches are doing a great job helping me ready the defenses. I put a lot of work in the offseason trying to lose some weight and get more speed out there, but stay strong.” Running the ball this season will be Gil Whitaker, an All-SPC selection, who gained more than 800 yards last year splitting carries. When Jones puts the ball in the air, he will again have Chuck Hunter there to go up and get it. A year ago, Hunter caught 45 passes for 923 yards and 11 touchdowns. Also back is Manuel Nartey on the other side. “Chuck is probably the top receiver back in the conference,”

said Romeoville coach Jeff Kuna. “But we feel as a pair, those two are as good as any out there. Up front, Jason Sims, Prosper Osinloye and Damien Vasquez return.

DEFENSE The Spartans must replace Anthony Love and Caleb Purnim, a pair of All-SPC defensive ends, but look for Evan Stingily to help with that as he moves from inside out. In the middle, Anthony Kopel, Justin Brandon and Anthony Hernandez all return at linebacker and will be joined by Whitaker as well. In the secondary, Hunter and Narty will play both sides of the ball and will be joined by returner D’Lante Dawson.

Interstate eight small division preview Wilmington remains the clear favorite in the new-look conference Since the departure of Coal City in 2008, the Interstate-8 Small School Division has had only one champion – Wilmington. There is no reason to think the Wildcats won’t be the team to beat again this season as Wilmington is one of the top teams in Class 3A for this season. Wilmington opens with a pair of Interstate-8 Large Division schools Sandwich and then Coal City. After the Wildcats, the I-8 Small

With small numbers, the Lions will play both sides of the ball this year. Westmont brings back Quintin Brown at running back, while Kyle Domin is back under center for coach Otto Zeeman. This season, Dwight is gone from the Interstate-8, joining the Sangamon Valley Conference, and Herscher slides down from going 1-4 in the I-8 Large Wide Right Division a year ago. Mark Gregory

lisle OFFENSE Most high school clubs are embracing pass-oriented offenses these days, but not new head coach Paul Parpet. “We’re going to have a power running game,” he said. The Lions’ running game will rest on the shoulders of junior Mike Metoyer and two sophomores: Grant Haen and Mark McGrath. “I like Grant, I like Mark McGrath and I like Mike Metyoer,” Parpet said. “I think they’re all very, very capable running backs.” Parpet also likes junior quarterback Alec Van Volkenburg. “Alex is going to run the offense and make the necessary throws that we ask him to make,” the coach said. Lisle’s line has some experience with returning senior starters Jared Arellano (center) and Alex Lange (guard). Senior Jack Hennessy and juniors John Eckard and Isaac Wilk also will be starting up front. Senior Charlie Jansen and junior Christian Grego are the team’s wideouts.

DEFENSE Parpet said the Lions will

play an even-man front and put pressure on opposing offenses. Arellano, Lang and Hennessy also will be the nucleus of Lisle’s defensive line. Seniors Tijaun Kelly and Billy Blystone, and junior Zach Temmerman, make up the Lions’ linebacking corps. In the secondary, Parpet plans on using senior Andy Frank, juniors Nick Massura and Drew English, and sophomore Mark Pivek.

OVERALL Parpet was the head coach at Addison Trail for 29 years, and most recently, coached the defensive line for four years at Downers North. “I still felt that I had a lot to give,” he said. “I like the Lisle community and I like the size of the school and the idea (of being a head coach again) was very appealing. It’s been outstanding since I’ve been here.” One big adjustment he’s making is the size of Lisle’s roster, compared to AT and Downers North. “The challenges are that

Westmont OFFENSE As always, coach Otto Zeman’s offensive will be no-huddle and move the chains. “We’ll be wide open and we’re gonna go after people,” he said. This season, Kyle Domin puts the offense in motion, and Zeman likes what he’s seen from the junior over the summer and throughout August. “He’s got a really strong arm,” the coach said. “He could be as good as any quarterback I’ve coached.” The Sentinels have a threat out of the backfield, senior Quintin Brown, whom Zeman said wasn’t utilized enough on offense last year. “He’s got great speed,” Zeman said. Dimitrios Latsonas, a junior, figures to be Westmont’s top receiver. The Sentinels’ line is bolstered by returning starters Sam Soltwisch and Lou Prado, both juniors. Photo By Mike Sandrolini

Quinton Brown looks to lead the Westmont running game.

DEFENSE Westmont’s defense took its lumps last season, but it should be a more stable unit this time around with five returning starters: senior

linebackers Jhreu Montanez and Adam Ferrell, junior tackle Anthony Griffiths, and seniors Josh Hicks (tackle) and Marcus Mott-Larson (end). Both Hicks and Mott-Larson tip the scales at around 260 pounds. “I think we’ll be better defensively—a lot better,” Zeman said.

OVERALL Zeman, a successful coach at Riverside-Brookfield for 28 seasons before taking the helm at Westmont last year, said, “I made a lot of mistakes last year,” during a 1-8 campaign, yet he believes things will be better in 2014. “We’re changing some things,” he said. “We’re getting better. They’re learning that they’ve got to be here every day and be here on time; they’ve got to work hard. I’m making demands on them and they’re starting to come through.” Westmont is in Class 3A and will begin the season playing three Class 4A foes in succession. “The biggest thing we have to do—I thought we could do this last year,

ESCC PREVIEW

2013 Standings

Another loaded season with several schools in contention for conference title Historically one of the toughest leagues in the state of Illinois, the East Suburban Catholic Conference is the same this season – maybe even tougher than the past with the addition of Marian Central Catholic. Locally, Joliet Catholic Academy will look to battle historically low numbers, but have the talent to compete in the ESCC. Benet will look to replace Iowa-bound quarterback Jack Beneventi, who transferred to Fenwick over the summer Niles Notre Dame needs to replace a star of its own in graduated running back Chris James. The Dons defense should keep them in games with a solid defensive line. The early favorite is Nazareth Academy as the Road Runners bring back 14 starters from last season’s playoff-qualifying team. Benet Academy OFFENSE

DEFENSE

There will be a quarterback whose first name is Jack under center for the Redwings in 2014, but it won’t be Jack Beneventi, the 6-foot-6 Iowa recruit who helped led Benet to consecutive postseason appearances. Beneventi transferred to Fenwick in June, which opened the door for sophomore Jack Sznajder to take over. Coach Pat New describes Sznajder as a dualthreat type of QB who can run and “has a really nice arm.” Jack will be handing off to his brother, Brad, a senior, who started seven games for Benet last season, and throwing to two new wideouts: senior Myles McKernin and junior Karl Schmidt. Benet, however, returns four experienced senior linemen: Tyler Takahashi, Connor O’Donnell, Sean O’Connor and Jack Kelly. “Offensively, I think it all starts with the offensive line,” New said “and if we can protect our quarterback and create some space for our running back, we’ll score some points.”

New said the Redwings won’t be as fast defensively as they were last season, so playing great team defense is a must. “Pursuit, swarm the football,” New said. “I know these guys are capable of doing that.” Kelly will be a key member of the line, while senior Brian Runger, who started a number of games during 2013, anchors the linebacking corps. Mac Cooney, also a senior, is a returning starter at safety.

OVERALL Beneventi’s transfer caught New by surprise, but he said he and the team have to move on. “Whether it’s injury or a transfer, I think all coaches are faced with that at some point,” he said. Joliet Catholic OFFENSE The Hilltoppers lost a lot of yards with the graduation of running back Mike Ivlow and quarterback Nick Morrison, but as JCA does so often, the team is looking for the next man up. Nick Borgra, who played wing opposite of Ivlow last year, returns to be the guy this season, while a pair of juniors – Harold Davis and Michael Johnson – are competing for the other wing back. Davis is no stranger to the varsity sports bright lights, as he was one of the leaders on the Hilltoppers’ basketball team that won regionals last year. Drew Voss returns at fullback along with Jordan Green. Quarterback Cade Earl started games in the middle of the season last year when Morrison was out with an injury and that has helped him get ready for this season as he takes the reigns this year. On the line, Tyler Witt and Chase Krumviede were both starters and Ze’Veyon Furcron played in several games and got a lot of experience. Between Earl and the line, JCA has several key players who were forced

into action a year ago because of injury and while it was a scramble a year ago, it is now a benefit.

DEFENSE Witt, Krumveide and Furcron will see time in the trenches on both sides of the ball, playing defensive line as well Ken Aguirre and Joe Frescura. The Hilltoppers return linebackers Brad Krisch and Mike Gruben and add Peter Riccolo, who saw game action last year. Brandon Bolek returns to anchor the defensive secondary. He will be joinedbyBrandonHolyandconverted running back Marty Krizka.

OVERALL Joliet Catholic has a lot of talent again this season, just not very much depth this year. “What we have coming back is a very strong nucleus of players,” JCA coach Dan Sharp said. “Our only negative here is numbers are much smaller than they ever have been. Our coaches have to be pretty creative to get what we need done and keep everyone healthy.”

OFFENSE

DEFENSE

You don’t replace an all-state running back like Chris James, who rushed for 3,832 career yards and 51 touchdowns. But if there’s a silver lining to be found in the post-James era, it’s that more players will have an opportunity to, as coach Mike Hennessey says, “Show what they can do.” The Dons will rely on a short passing game, quick openers and the option, which will be run by junior quarterbacks Tyler Tsagalis and Jimmy Topping. Tsagalis, whom Hennessey said has a very strong arm, is getting the majority of the snaps. “The kids really believe in him,” Hennessey said. “I think that’s a really key factor. They also believe in Jimmy, so we’re very fortunate.” Seniors Matt Curley and Bill Byrne, along with junior Tom Dolis, will be Tsagalis’ and Topping’s options at wideout, while senior Marco Orlandi and Kip Hackleman man the backfield. Seniors Frank Pavlik and Brian Brand are returning starters at center and right tackle, respectively.

The Dons have three returning starters on defense: senior end Mike Sabatino, junior tackle Marco Pehar and junior linebacker Matt Szyska. Teaming up at linebacker with Szyska are seniors Kevin Flaherty and Mike Bicknell. The secondary consists of seniors Jim Finneke and John Fay at the corners, and Bob Dombi at safety. Junior tackle Kaylan Acosta and junior safety Tim Simon also will be in the mix defensively.

OVERALL Though James is the most notable graduation loss, the Dons said goodbye to 36 seniors from last season’s playoff squad. Nevertheless, Hennessey likes the makeup of this year’s club, and a 10th straight trip to the playoffs is not out of the question. “We’re really happy with the chemistry and the work effort they’ve given us,” he said. “We think we’re pretty strong across the board, the offensive and defensive lines look really good, and there’s some experience in both of those

DEFENSE

The Hawks started last season with two quarterbacks behind center, but then-sophomore Brian Collis took over the rest of the way and performed admirably as Maine South advanced to the Class 8A quarterfinals. Now Collis will be at the controls for the next two seasons. “He’s so steady,” said Maine South coach David Inserra. “We can challenge him; we can push him like a senior.” Collis will have a plethora of good wideouts from which to choose in seniors Vinny Labus, George Sargeant, Tommy Bazarek and Braden Gebavi and junior Jon Arenas. Maine South also is quite capable of churning out yardage on the ground with senior Justin Fahey, who led the Hawks in rushing a year ago. “He’s absolutely tenacious,” Inserra said. Three-year starter Tyler Bolger leads the O-line along with seniors Pete Szymanski and Mike Erskine, who go 6-feet, 5-inches, 275-pounds and 6-3, 240, respectively.

Maine South’s “D” this fall will feature a handful of players going both ways. Labus and Sargeant have two linebacker positions locked down, Bazarek will be a cornerback and Fahey is a safety. Returning starter Dan Ellsworth will be the other safety; seniors Kyle Dolan (safety and cornerback) and Kevin Thomas (corner) figure into the defensive backfield, as well. Seniors Davis Neilands and John Bargo are up front, and another senior, Telly Karabatsos will be one of the Hawks’ main linebackers.

OVERALL The offensive and defensive lines will, Inserra notes, have “a little bit of inexperience.” But he adds, “I think we have enough athletes and speed around them. We don’t need to ask them to be unbelievable superstars, so if they can get their job done, their assignments done, doing the little things, they’re going to progress throughout the season.” The Hawks once again open

Quran Spillman is a threat on the outside for Niles West.

Tommy Galanopoulos returns for his third year as the Wolves’ starting quarterback. Not only does coach Scott Baum think the senior is physically gifted, but he’s a student of the game and a competitor. The Wolves also have two bigtime playmakers—running back Brandon Costantino and wideout/ return threat Quran Spillman, each of whom possesses the speed to take it to the house on any given play. “He’s (Spillman) such a weapon,” Baum said. “Brandon has transitioned from being a track star to being a football star. We’re excited about giving him the ball and seeing him run.” In addition, Niles West is set in the line with senior three-year starter George Tripkos, along with Kaleb Siemieniewski, Brian Stranz and Dan Studer. The latter three, all seniors, are going into their second season as starters.

DEFENSE A few starting positions still

need to be determined before Niles West takes the field for its seasonopener Friday night at Ridgewood, but the Wolves’ defensive nucleus is solid. The Pignato twins, Adam and Jeremy, are three-year starters at linebacker and safety, respectively. Cornerback Chris Cervantes also is a three-year starter and senior Tahir Meeks moves from linebacker, where he started last season, to defensive end. Senior Deante Dunum also will be a mainstay in the line. And look for Galanopoulos to see some snaps at defensive back along the way this season.

OVERALL Proving that 2012 was not a fluke, the Wolves made the Class 8A playoffs for the second straight season last year. Given the overall team depth this year— plus Galanopoulos at the controls offensively—a third straight postseason bid is a likely scenario. “The program has worked extremely hard to do that,” said Baum, referring to Niles West’s current string of playoff

csl north PREVIEW Glenbrook North leads balanced conference; could be anyone’s race in 2014 It’s a given that the North Division of the Central Suburban League doesn’t get the recognition in football that CSL South does. Glenbrook North, though, has been the one team that’s exhibited consistency within the division in recent seasons. The Spartans have won the North three of the past four campaigns; plus, they’ve qualified for the postseason four of the past five. The Spartans are poised to be at the top of the North again this fall with seven returning starters on offense alone (12 returning starters overall).Two-wayworkhorse David Burnside (wideout and defensive back) missed the final four games of 2013 after suffering a tear of his posterior cruciate ligament (he was an All-CSL North pick as a sophomore in 2012). But he’s back at full strength, and joins returning all-conference players Brandon Labunski (offensive lineman) and Matt Tedeschi (linebacker).

Maine East coach Gabe Corey still has two of his sons in uniform—Woody, who could play either quarterback or tailback, and George, an experienced lineman. The Warriors host Highland Park in their CSL North opener, and travel to Glenbrook North the following week. A victory in one of those contests leaves Deerfield with Maine West, Maine East and Niles North the rest of the way … and likely a 4-1 record. 3. Highland Park - If the Giants can get past Deerfield in Week 5, they play Maine West, Maine East and Niles North, in that order, before facing Glenbrook North in the regular season finale. The Giants will be looking for revenge in that matchup because GBN defeated them in a hard-fought game to win the title last October.

4. Niles North - On paper, it’s doubtful the Vikings can get past either GBN, Highland Park or Deerfield, but they should be able to upend Maine West and Maine East. 5. Maine East - The Demons were down to their third-string quarterback during their first game of 2013, and the injuries continued to mount after that. But if they stay relatively healthy this season, they’ll give most teams on their schedule a battle. 6. Maine West - The Warriors and their new offense ought to be able to put some points on the board vs. their first two 2014 opponents, Proviso East and Elmwood Park—teams that combined for one victory last season. After that, things could get ugly.

Maine East OFFENSE Maine East now is left with two of coach Gabe Corey’s sons, compared to four who played for him two years ago. But junior Woody Corey and senior George Corey will be integral parts of the Demons offense (and defense, for that matter) in 2014. Coach Corey indicated he’ll probably use a twoquarterback system, with Woody and last year’s backup, Steve Youel, a senior, sharing snaps. “If Woody’s not playing quarterback, he’ll be playing tailback,” said the coach, who added that Maine East will be running more of a spread offense this fall. Senior Munk Dayar, a returning starter, lines up at fullback, junior Jose Mauras and sophomore Sargood Odicho are the wideouts, and junior Reichel Balghazar is the slot receiver. Up front is George Corey (6-1, 240) at a guard and classmate Nick Pavlovic (6-3, 325) at a tackle. Both are three-year starts who are benching over 350 pounds and squatting 550. They’ll be joined by Kyree Brammer, a 6-3,

350-pound senior.

DEFENSE Outside of four players, exactly who’ll man the remainder of the spots on the Demons’ defensive unit has not yet been determined, Gabe Corey said. The four players who have locked up positions are Woody and George Corey (free safety and nose guard, respectively), Dayar (linebacker) and junior Alberto Saurus (linebacker).

OVERALL To say that the Demons were snake-bitten by injuries last season wouldbeacolossalunderstatement. They lost their starting quarterback, Alex Corey, to a ruptured ACL and Youel, their backup QB, to an injury in the first game of the season alone. “Last year we probably had more injuries in the10 years I’ve coached here,” said Coach Corey. Despite the rash of injuries and a 2-7 record, the Demons were competitive in 2013. If they can just have what Corey terms “a normal year” with regard to injuries and “not have it (injuries)

Top Offensive Player

Mark: Bolingbrook The Raiders defense is absolutely stacked this season. With brothers Julian and Jacob Huff back with Tuf Borland and Micah Dew-Treadway, the Bolingbrook D may be better this season than it was during the Class 8A championship team in 2011. The Bolingbrook offense will be reshuffled this season with starting QB Quincy Woods moving to WR and a host of new running backs, but the Raiders have the perfect person in place to help with that as IHSA legendary coach Dan Darlington joins the staff and will be calling offensive plays this season. Scott: Maine South Mark always seems to go with the Raiders or JCA. I picked the Raiders last year, but am going back to Maine South this year. The Hawks have a lot of talent coming back this year, particularly on offense. They always seem to have a solid defense, so that shouldn’t be a problem. And, they play the

Mark: Minooka I picked the Indians as my surprise team last season and I am doubling down this year. After some issues at the QB last season got worked out, Minooka scuffled to a 3-6 season. Nate Gunn has emerged as one of the top running backs in the area and has the opportunity to become one of the state’s best as well. A new quarterback is in the fold this season in Johnny Carnagio and he could make Minooka a threat to win the SPC. Scott: Westmont After a difficult year last year, I feel the Sentinels are set up to have a much better season this year. The schedule isn’t easy, but in coach Otto Zeman’s last year, and in another year in his system, they should have something to play for and be much improved. Zeman has high praise for quarterback Kyle Domin and he thinks the defense is much

Mark: Nate Gunn, Minooka The aforementioned Gunn is as imposing of a runner as the area has seen, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 210 pounds. He tallied 867 yards and 14 touchdowns a year ago and could feast on SPC defenses this season and run well over 1,000 yards on the season. Scott: Chuck Hunter, Romeoville Hunter might not be the top offensive recruit in our coverage area, but he poses a matchup problem for whatever corner goes up against him. He broke through last year with a 1,000-yard season and that could be even higher this year with his combination of speed and athleticism.

Top Defensive Player Mark: Tuf Borland, Bolingbrook Entering his junior season, Borland already has two years under his belt as a varsity starter. He was the team’s top tackler last season,

with 101 total tackles. He had 10 tackles for loss, one sack, five pass break-ups and two interceptions. With a great cast around him, Borland will be free to wreak havoc again this season. Scott: Micah Dew-Treadway, Bolingbrook Yes, Borland is going to be in the running for our Player of the Year award and will have tons of tackles, but part of that will be thanks to Dew-Treadway. The Notre Dame recruit will plug up the line of scrimmage and force to linemen to block him, which opens up the linebackers like Borland to make plays.

Breakout Player Mark: Gil Whitaker, Romeoville Last season, Whitaker put up maybe the quietest 800-yard season in the area, if not the state. His yards last season came while sharing carries with the now graduated Miguel Ford. While Ford was able to juke defenders and the Spartan passing game could put up highlights, Whitaker earned his yards between the tackles and should do the same

this season to the tune of 1,000 yards or better. Scott: Brian Collis, Maine South Well, I guess Mark doesn’t know that football does take place north of I-88. But Brian Collis, a junior, is back for his second year as starting quarterback and I expect big improvements for him in year two. It also helps that he has a plethora of skill players around him.

Surprise Player Mark: Deiondre Taylor, Lockport A talented player, Taylor is a converted running back to a possible quarterback spot this year. Wherever he plays, Taylor is sure to have an impact in the new-look Lockport offense. Scott: Danny Saracco, Plainfield South He might not surprise his opponents this year, but he will likely surprise plenty of other people across the area, and perhaps state. With Louisiana State-bound Clifton Garrett getting all the hype last year, it was Saracco, a sophomore, who led the team in tackles. He is now the leader of the defense in his junior year.
