Eight St., Hinsdale. The 21st annual Rotary Run Charity Classic is proud to partner with Hinsdale Adventist Hospital with the Rooney 5k Run, making it a true community event that benefits some of the most well-known charities in the suburban area, including The Community House, Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, District 181 Foundation, Hinsdale Rotary Charities, Hinsdale Humane Society and Ray Graham Association. This CARA certified annual event will bring thousands of participants who will step out for children and families, which include the Rooney 5K run, the 3K run, 5K Walk, the Birches 5K walk & roll, Mutt Strut and the Morgan Stanley 10K run through the historic streets of Hinsdale and beautiful surrounding neighborhoods before returning to The Community House.

Interested runners or walkers are encouraged to register online now at www. rotaryruncharityclassic.org; (walk-ins are also welcome on race day). More than 1,600 participants, 2,000 spectators and hundreds of volunteers are expected to turn out to the race, which supports local non-profits. Schools compete to see who will win the Mr. K and Mrs. B trophies. The trophies are given to the middle school and grade school that has the highest percentage of participants.

The Hinsdale Rotary is a member of Rotary International, which is a worldwide organization that has 1.2 million members in 32,000 clubs and 200 countries with a focus on international service, vocational service, club service and community service. There are 60 members representing all types of businesses in the Hinsdale Rotary that meet at noon on Friday at The Community House.

Come visit the Rotary and be a guest at one of the weekly meetings. Decide for yourself if joining Hinsdale Rotary is right for you. “As the 2015 Hinsdale Rotary race chair, “I’m excited to be part of this annual community race event especially as it celebrates its 21st anniversary this year of fun and success! brINGING tHe COmmUNItY

in tRaininG beLOW Is A LIst OF pHILOsOpHIes, IDeAs AND HINts tO HeLp YOU HAVe A GreAt DAY At tHe rACe Frequency over Duration - Rather than trying to run “long”, run “often”. Running four times a week for 20 minutes is far better for your preparation than running only once a week for an hour and a half. Keep the body active and make this training a habit.

Preparing for the Charity Run

Walk or jog - It’s not necessary for running to be painful. Consider running in comfort for just a minute or a few minutes and then walking for a minute to bring your heart rate down. You can easily link this together for 20, 30, 40 minutes or more and make a great workout from a walk/jog approach. Good form - It’s better to run with good form for a short period of time and then walk for a minute to refresh - than to have that form deteriorate and run poorly. Good running promotes more good running, and the ability to run well, faster and longer.

Poor running risks injury and should be avoided. Break up your runs with short bits of walking to recover and refresh so you can run well again. Hydrate - Drink a bit more water than normal to help offset the fluid lost during exercise. An electrolyte drink can help too but mind those calories. Food as Fuel - protein to repair muscles, low glycemic carbohydrates for longer lasting energy and good fat (nuts, nut butters, avocado, etc) all serve a purpose for you, the athlete.
