Local aviation club hosts 44th annual breakfast at Lewis Airport More than 1,000 visitors are expected to attend event, which will feature at least 100 planes

By laura katauskas staff reporter

For 44 years, pancakes and planes have gone together thanks to a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Experimental Aviation Association. George Linkis, who flew as a pilot in World War II, started the event with his veteran buddies as a way to promote their love of flying. For Linkis, each year’s event is an opportunity to share his world and the worlds of all EAA Chapter 15 members to the general public. And, attendees to Sunday’s event will have the opportunity to walk away with a great appreciation of flight. Chairman Jim Christopher said the EAA offers aviation enthusiasts, aircraft builders and pilots the opportunity to share ideas, encourage safety, serve the local aviation community and have fun in the process. Chapter 15 is the oldest Illinois chapter of the EAA, which boasts a worldwide network of 180,000 members. More than 1,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, which will feature at least 100 planes and warbirds, as well as an unofficial air show. “This event is all about promoting aviation and sharing our love of flying with the community who can come out and see a variety of planes,” said Christopher, who began flying in the Air Force and never stopped. “I can’t say anything more than, ‘I love it.” As it the cost of flying goes up and the number of private pilots goes down, Christopher said the piloting community is getting smaller. He feels that is why it so important to keep the enthusiasm for aviation alive. “I love aviation, and I’ve met great people along the way,” Christopher said. “Pilots tend to be pretty unique to get into this business.” In part, the group’s mission is to provide a place for its members to teach “Young Eagles” the merits of building a plane. In 2010, the EAA began a scholarship program that awards a high school student up

to $1,000 to further their study of aviation. Part of the proceeds from the pancake breakfast help fund the scholarship award. The 44th annual EAA Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday, May 17, from 7 a.m. to noon at the Lewis University Airport. The cost for the pancake breakfast is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Spectators can drive in or fly in, but those on wheels can use the entrance to the hangar off of Renwick Road between Route 53 and Weber Road. Chapter 15 of the EAA meets the second Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. (except August) in the EAA Chapter 15 building at Lewis University Airport in Romeoville. Valley View district reorganizes school board Quigley returns as president

By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

Voters elected two new members to the Valley View School District board of Education in April, and last week they officially took their seats. New board members Diane Parro and J.T. Boudouris were sworn in and a reorganization of the board unfolded. Steve Quigley, who won re-election in April, was also re-elected as board president. Chrystal Hansen was elected new vice president and Debbie Sykora will serve as secretary. Former members Rick Gougis and Leo Venegas stepped down from their roles on the board, and they were honored for their services during a previous school board meeting.

New to the board, but not the community, Boudouris brings private sector business experience to the school board. The owner and operator of his own Farmers Insurance agency in Romeoville, he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa. He is active in the Romeoville community, serving on the village’s Downtown Redevelopment Commission. Parro has been a resident of Bolingbrook for almost three decades, and she has been involved in the Valley View School District as a parent, volunteer and guest teacher. A graduate of Northern

Illinois University, she is a member of the VVSD Safety Committee and Coordinator of Bolingbrook High School’s Friends and Neighbors Supporting Students program. Parro also is a past president of the Wood View Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and the Bolingbrook High School Music Boosters. The board approved a meeting schedule that begins July 13. Meetings also will be held on Aug. 10 and Aug. 24, Sept. 14 and Sept 28, Oct. 13 and Oct. 26, Nov. 16, Dec. 14, Jan. 11 and Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and Feb. 22, March 14 and March 28, April 18, May 9 and May 23, and June 13.

It’s time for Romeoville residents to clean out their closets, as Spring Clean Up Week is set to begin May 18. Garbage pick-up along with unlimited pick-up of large items will be held on resident’s regular

weddings

‘Gifts should come from the heart,’ and not the appliance section (NewsUSA) If you’re reading this story, you’re probably one of the approximately 825,000 couples who’ve just gotten engaged since Thanksgiving and are now planning your wedding. So here’s perhaps the single most important reminder -- and grooms do seem to need more reminding than brides -- anyone will offer: Tradition holds that you both exchange wedding presents. (Yes, grooms, even though you just bought her an engagement ring.) But what to get? “Gifts should come from the heart,” says WeddingChannel.com. Well, yeah. But that still leaves a lot of room for error. So here’s some tips to keep in mind whether you two opt for some type of jewelry -- the

traditional and most popular choice -- or something else.

Practicality can wait Etiquette dictates that gifts be exchanged at one of three times: the night before the wedding, the morning of the ceremony, or right before you leave on your honeymoon. So you could see where this has the potential for becoming a bigger disaster than Chernobyl if the groom’s idea of “practical” is, say, a toaster.

Being uniquely personal is appreciated One of the best examples we’ve heard of is a guy who had a photographer secretly capture the moment he proposed in New York’s Central Park, and then presented the results to his bride on the day of their wedding. “So cute!” read a typical blog post. The downside, of course, is that pulling it off requires imagination and -- in this instance -a lot of advance planning.

“Gifts should come from the heart,” says WeddingChannel.com. Well, yeah. But that still leaves a lot of room for error.

Jewelry can be “traditional” without being boring Case in point: the very hot Argyle diamonds trend (www.diamondswithastory. com), which fulfills the quest of even the most

ecominded couples for diamond fashion jewelry since the stones are produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way from the Argyle mine in Australia. And the diamonds, themselves, come in gorgeous neutral shades like champagne, cognac, silver and gray. “If your bride likes something different from what all her friends have,” says jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor, “then the Argyle diamond bracelets, necklaces and earrings are perfect and available at many retailers across the country -- I’ve even spotted women at gyms wearing the diamond pendants. And the cufflinks for men are truly elegant.” Perhaps because prices start at as little as a few hundred dollars for some pieces, O’Connor calls them “the ideal gateway gift.” Meaning, you can use other occasions -- think birthdays and anniversaries -- to add to your collection through the years. Yes, brides and grooms, you’ll soon have to start planning your next milestone together.

STATEBOUND Romeoville senior advances to the state badminton meet

By Scott taylor sports editor

staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports

Angeleah Barin became the first Romeoville badminton player to advance to the state badminton meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Barin qualified for state after placing fourth at the Lincoln-Way West Sectional. “To make it to state is a great thing for me,” Barin said. “Looking back as a freshman and not knowing the sport and going to state senior year, that would be great. All of the hard work paid off.” Barin opened play with a threeset win over Andrew before a loss to eventual runner-up Cassie Ruettiger of Lincoln-Way West. She bounced back to win her statequalifying match before falling to West’s Delayne Weston in the third

place match. Her hard work in the offseason is what helped her get to this level. “Idefinitelymadeimprovements,” she said. “My agility and endurance are a lot better. My coach training us in the weight room helped.” The previous weekend Barin placed second at No. 1 singles in the Southwest Prairie Conference for the second straight year. Both years she lost to Leena Hwang of Oswego East, who happened to win the Lincoln-Way West singles title. “I felt pretty good about myself. I work hard all the time in practice. I’m pretty happy as a senior and where I finished. She is a tough opponent.” It was a good showing for the Spartans in the SPC as they finished in fourth place.

second consecutive NCAA National Championship. Lewis had to rally in the fourth and fifth sets. In the fourth Lewis denied two Loyola championship points before a triple block put Lewis up 26-25. Senior Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) went back on the next serve and delivered an ace to give the fourth set to Lewis 27-25. The frantic fifth set had 12 ties and eight lead changes, the most of any of the five games. Lewis led 6-4 before the Ramblers scored four straight points. Loyola

held this lead until 14-11. But the match wasn’t over yet. Four straight Lewis points gave the Flyers championship point at 1514. Loyola denied it, and did the same at 19-18 and 21-20. A kill by Loyola’s Cody Caldwell tied the score at 21. Back-to-back blocks by Loyola followed, to give the match and the title to the Ramblers. “I think we gave you a match to remember for a long, long time in terms of just atmosphere and energy,” Lewis head men’s volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “It’ll be a fun one to go back and

talk about. “I’m really proud of my guys and the heart that they showed (tonight),” Friend continued. “I think maybe we didn’t play as clean as we wanted to, but we found ways to scrap it out and put ourselves in a position to swing for the win and I can’t ask for anything else. “They left everything out on that floor in terms of just team, heart, dedication, effort and attitude.” Senior Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished with a match-high 23 kills with 12 digs. Powell added

20 kills. Senior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) had a match-high 15 digs. The difference in the game came at the net. The Ramblers outblocked the Flyers 20.5 to 13.5. It helped Loyola out-hit Lewis .260 to .219. Following the match, both Petty and Powell were named to the AllTournament Team. Lewis ends the 2015 campaign 27-4. Loyola improves to 28-3 with the win. The match was played at Maples Pavilion on the campus of host Stanford University.

really helped.” “I was really excited and kind of surprised that I got that far,” Crowley said. “I was so happy and surprised. I got second place last year, so I moved up a placing. I worked really hard all season and was proud.” The duo also teamed up for this year in doubles and they placed second at the No. 3 spot.

“It was a good experience,” Crowley said. “It was our first year playing together and we worked really hard all season. We worked together and used our strategy. It felt good to get second. We knew if we worked hard we could get to where we want to be.” “We were hoping for first, but we were happy with second,” Bermejo

added. “We lost to a good team. The whole year we had good chemistry. Our friendship makes us better. We gave it everything we had.” Andrea Algarra added a secondplace showing at No. 7 singles. “I’m pretty happy for placing at all,” she said. “I was really hoping for first because I went undefeated during the conference season, but

it is ok because she was really good. I have never seen her before. It was really unexpected, but I didn’t give up at all. My smashes normally work really well, but she returned them today. I’m pretty happy overall. I played 10 last year and this year I played seven. I made a big improvement throughout the season.”

designed for people of every fitness level and are open to all adults, not just Anytime Fitness members. “At Anytime Fitness, we’re passionate about helping people ‘get to a healthier place,’” said Jim

Janetopoulos, owner of Anytime Fitness. “That can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s losing weight or gaining strength. In severe cases, the irregular astigmatism cannot be corrected with contact By Dr. Stuart Sondheimer lenses. nweditor@buglenewspapers.com Keratoconus affects about 1 out of @DownersGrvBugle 2,000 people. Its inheritance is poorly understood, Keratoconus is a although about 15 percent progressive disease that of people with keratoconus causes the outermost have blood relatives with layer of the eye, known the disease and are thought as the cornea, to become to have a hereditary form steeper, thinner, cone of the condition. Frequent shaped and distorted. eye rubbing with the hands The name and rigid contact lens wear “keratoconus” is derived Dr. Stuart Sondheimer may contribute to the from the Greek words development of keratoconus. “kerato,” meaning cornea, and “conus,” meaning Many patients are found to have cone-shaped. Keratoconus usually keratoconus in adolescence. In affects both eyes, but it can be many cases, the condition stabilizes far more advanced in one eye or for people in their 30s or 40s. Some people have vulnerabilities the other. An ophthalmologist can determine steepening of the that cause them to develop a cornea through the use of corneal keratoconus-like disease called topography – a topographical map “corneal ectasia” when they have eye of the cornea – or keratometry – an surgeries that weaken the cornea optical instrument that measures such as LASIK or photorefractive

keratectomy (PRK) to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. An ophthalmologist should be able to detect most, but not all, patients who are likely to develop corneal ectasia following LASIK by performing special tests such as corneal topography or corneal tomography. Some candidates for refractive surgery to lessen dependence on glasses or contact lenses are discouraged from having such surgery because of elevated risk factors for developing postoperative ectasia including young age, thin corneas or significant nearsightedness. Patients with keratoconus commonly complain of decreased vision. Some see multiple images. In milder cases, glasses or soft contact lenses correct a patient’s vision. In more severe cases, vision may be corrected with gas permeable or hybrid contact lenses. Plastic corneal implants called intacs may help improve vision. In severe cases, corneal transplant surgery may be required to restore vision. Internationally, and in the U.S., there are new treatments, including

In some cases, CCC lessens the steepening and irregularity of the cornea caused by keratoconus or ectasia. In CCC, the cornea is first treated with drops of riboflavin that is absorbed by the cornea after receiving successive drops over time. Originally, the soft outer covering of the cornea was removed prior to administration of the drops, but now many patients are treated without disrupting the cornea. Next, ultraviolet light is focused on the cornea. The ultraviolet light focused on the riboflavin-treated cornea causes it to form new “crosslinks”

that stiffen the cornea and stop the progression of keratoconus and corneal ectasia. A contact lens is placed on the eye after treatment and antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are used post-operatively. CCC can also treat bacterial infections of the cornea that are resistant to antibiotics. This treatment is welcome news to people dealing with keratoconus and is indicative of the progress being made in modern ophthalmology. Health department activates West Nile information line Residents encouraged to report location of dead birds May marks the beginning of the West Nile Virus season across Illinois, and Will County residents can help minimize the potential for WNV by reporting dead birds to the Will County Health Department. Will County’s WNV Information Line is now available for individuals wishing to report dead birds, which can help identify the potential for human infections. The 24-hour service is accessible at 815-740-

7631. Launched in May 2002, the information line enables area residents to access the latest information concerning WNV, report the location of dead birds and talk to a health department representative about the disease during regular weekly business hours. Will County Environmental Health uses dead bird reports to monitor potential WNV hot spots and identify other possible trends requiring health department intervention. Adult crows and blue jays have long been testing priorities, but the Illinois Department of Public Health

will accept multiple bird species for laboratory analysis. Other birds suitable for testing include robins, finches, grackles, sparrows, wrens, swallows and cardinals. “WNV poses potential health risks for everyone,” said John Cicero, executive director of the Will County Health Department. “We are interested in the location of dead birds because that information is one way we are able to assess the potential for local virus activity. Dead bird monitoring and testing are critical parts of the statewide WNV surveillance initiative.” The health department will collect a limited number of reported

dead birds and submit them to the state for analysis. Pictures of bird testing priorities can be viewed on the environmental health Web page, www.willcountyhealth.org. WNV is a mosquito-borne disease capable of producing encephalitis and meningitis, potentially fatal inflammations of the brain and spinal cord. Residents can minimize personal risk by avoiding outdoor activity at dusk and near dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Wearing light-colored long sleeves and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites on your property can also reduce

personal risk. Residents are also advised to use insect repellent containing DEET or other chemical compounds that deter mosquitoes when spending time outdoors. There were more than 2,250 human WNV cases and 85 fatalities reported nationally during 2014. Fatalities were reported in 22 states. Illinois has reported 2,133 cumulative WNV human infections and 135 fatalities since 2002. The state totals include 66 Will County cases and two local fatalities.
