JJC Board of Trustees fills one vacancy Joliet Junior College’s board of trustees unanimously voted to appoint Joliet lawyer Dan

O’Connell to fill the vacancy left by former trustee Jeff May, who resigned from the board in July due

to health reasons. O’Connell, who previously served as a JJC trustee from 2007-

2013, was sworn in at the beginning of the board’s Sept. 8 meeting by Romeoville Mayor John Noak. O’Connell then joined the board for the remainder of the meeting. “I believe it is important to move forward the good work the college is known for and maintain the excellent reputation that JJC enjoys in the state of Illinois and the nation,” O’Connell stated in his

letter of intent. JJC trustees also held a special meeting Sept. 10 to review applications for the remaining two vacant seats left by Tina Markley and Barbara Adams, who resigned from the board on Aug. 25. The appointments of those two individuals is expected to be completed by the regularly scheduled Oct. 6 meeting.

Event celebrates area migrant populations ‘Day of the Immigrant’ to raise awareness for immigration reform By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

It is meant to be a day of celebration and reminder of how much immigrants contribute to this country, while also taking a look at immigration reform in a time when politics remain high. More than 6,000 are expected to attend the fifth annual “Day of the Immigrant, Harvesting our Future” from 2 to 11 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center, 375 Briarcliff Road. The event, sponsored by the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project, is designed to strengthen the voices of the immigrant community living in the southwest suburbs in Will and DuPage Counties. Jose Vera, executive director of SSIP, is a graduate of Bolingbrook High School and a “Dreamer,” one of many undocumented

immigrants in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. The Day of the Immigrant was first celebrated in 2010. A small grassroots efforts initiative, the SSIP first began with a march through downtown Naperville to bring attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform and ended with a day of community service. Local politicians are expected to speak at the program, calling attentiontoacontinuedmomentum for immigration. This year, the “Day of the Immigrant” is meant to bring

Large crowd gathers for last year’s Day of the Immigrant celebration. awareness to the need of immigration reform through a cultural entertainment exposition and resource fair, hoping to create a bridge between communities. The resource fair is to showcase a variety of vendors and service organizations to provide information that some may not otherwise come across. In addition, the celebration will include a series of diverse music and dance performances throughout the entire celebration with various ethnic groups and various food vendors and kids activities.

RHS community buzzing about birds Band boost donations with flamingo fundraiser Have you been flocked? If you wake up to a bunch of bright pink flamingos in your front yard, it’s a sure bet the Romeoville High School Band paid a visit. And if you pay them, they will remove the flamingos and bring them to a friend of your choice. In a unique fundraiser that has the community buzzing about birds, the RHS band boosters have found a way around hustling candy bars. The group wanted to try something different and heard about such a fundraiser from a church member who saw it done elsewhere. The band thought they would give it a try. They have met tremendous support from the community, explained Jessica Swank, band booster member. “We’ve had people comment that they would love this way to

support the band. It’s different; it’s fun; we come to them and it’s not just buying cookie dough.” For $5, the students will deliver bright, pink flamingos to a yard, classroom or office that will remain there for two to four days… unless, of course, the victim pays $10 to have them removed sooner. Victims also have the option of

having the flock sent to someone else’s lawn for $15. Two weeks worth of “protection” from flamingo flocks may be purchased for $20. It all can be arranged by contacting Abee Swank; text at 815-325-4322 or rhsflamingos16@gmail.com. Proceeds will be used to support the RHS band program.

he sun was shining, the temperature was just right and the community was out in full force for Bolingbrook’s 50th annual Pathways Parade Sunday. The village’s 50th anniversary celebration coincided with the parade, which featured almost 100 participants walking the stretch from Bolingbrook High School to the town center. The Claar Family, Mayor Roger Claar, Pat Claar, Lindsey Claar Smith, Trevor Smith and Samantha Joy served as the anniversary Grand Marshal for the parade. It was a show of marching bands and school clubs, township services and community organizations. And it was cultural pride that brought out the vast many associations dedicated to expressing themselves through dance, music, costume and spirit.

Humphrey teacher joins scientists aboard Lake Michigan research vessel Educators helped collect data on lake’s ecosystem Following what he terms “an eye-opening experience” on Lake Michigan, Humphrey Middle School sixth grade science teacher Mike Stoehrmann has embarked on a campaign to educate his students on plastics pollution and water contaminants. Courtesy of an Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Stoehrmann was 1 of 15 educators selected to spend a week aboard the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research vessel Lake Guardian. The educators were tasked with helping EPA scientists collect data on environmental issues in Lake Michigan’s ecosystem. “It was an amazing experience,” the long-time Humphrey teacher said. “The opportunity to work sideby-side with published scientists on topics relevant to all of us is something that I can immediately bring back to my classroom and my students.” In an effort to determine the effects of using plastics in everyday life, Stoehrmann’s group dragged sleds and utilized GoPro cameras to take sediment core samples from the Lake Michigan floor. “They’ve done samples of water before but have never taken samples from the bottom. They wanted to go a little deeper to see what was settling to the bottom,” he said. Stoehrmann was surprised by what they found. “The plastics aren’t being treated.

They’re just being washed into our waterways,” he said. “Our wastewater treatment plants take care of the organic materials and get rid of the really bad stuff before they dump it back into our waterways but they don’t actually filter out the plastics.” The research team found micro beads from face scrubs at the bottom of the lake, as well as little plastics pods used for detergent in washing machines and dishwashers and even the lose strings that come off clothes during washing. “There’s a lot of things you don’t think about that are mixing with our drinking water,” he said. Stoehrmann is encouraged by a recently passed Illinois law banning the distribution of face scrubs with micro beads by 2017, and has already convinced his family to stop using particle-filled face scrubs. But the Humphrey Science Key leader and Science Club sponsor is now busy looking at ways to include the research from his trip in this year’s science curriculum. He has talked to officials in the Bolingbrook Department of Public Works, who have agreed to host student field

trips to the Bolingbrook wastewater treatment plant, as well as visit classrooms to discuss the entire water treatment process. And, utilizing the knowledge (and some similar equipment) from his Lake Michigan cruise, he plans to have Humphrey Science Club members don hip waders and utilize plankton nets to collect and analyze samples from various waterways in the Bolingbrook area. “It will be kind of interesting to find out what’s in our water around here,” he said. Stoehrmann said he was truly honored to be one of only two Illinois teachers who participated in the Lake Michigan Shipboard Science Workshop, which was supported by the EPA through funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Center for Great Lakes Literacy. The Center for Great Lakes Literacy is a collaborative effort led by Sea Grant educators throughout the Great Lakes region. CGLL fosters informed and responsible decisionmaking that advances basin-wide stewardship by providing hands-on experiences, educational resources and networking opportunities.

This includes suspicious vehicles on and around campus, suspicious persons in and around school buildings including those taking photographs or videotaping, suspicious packages around the building perimeter and/ or in the school and suspicious information-seeking efforts by phone or by unknown visitors. We pay special attention to perimeter security and access control issues. This includes supervision and monitoring of parking lots and outside areas; training for custodial, maintenance and grounds personnel on identifying suspicious persons who enter the school grounds; and making sure classroom windows are secured at the end of each day. officers and other police personnel, and associated protection personnel. Adult supervision before, during and after school is important, both inside the school buildings in common areas such as hallways, stairwells, restrooms, cafeterias, bus areas and other hightraffic areas as well as outside at each campus. We maintain a proactive approach to visitor access and control. The number of doors accessible from the outside has been reduced to one or two designated entrances, all of which are monitored. Staff understand the importance of greeting and challenging strangers, and reporting suspicious individuals. A security procedure is in place for after school and evening activities and building use. All service personnel and vendors visiting the school are identified, including those seeking access to utilities, alarm systems, communications systems, maintenance areas and related locations. Suspicious individuals representing themselves as service or delivery personnel who cannot be verified are denied entrance. We continually review lockdown and evacuation procedures. Note it is possible to have a simultaneous lockdown of one section of a school

building while evacuating other parts of the school, so both lockdown and evacuations may need to occur at the same time. We confer with local officials, fire, emergency medical, law enforcement, emergency management, and other local, county, and/or state officials to establish specific response and prevention protocols, and to educate school faculty, crisis teams, and community leaders on any school emergency issues. We teach students to avoid potentially dangerous situations, and encourage them to exhibit “safe” behavior, alerting school personnel if a stranger is on school grounds and report situations that threaten other students’ safety. We also teach students there is an alternative to gang membership, including activities that will build selfesteem and help students to deal with the feeling of powerlessness. There is a plan in place to create an atmosphere that will foster a sense of belonging for students. We believe in the importance of informing parents and school staff about gangs and teaching students how to avoid being drawn into them, and giving students regular opportunities to discuss school experiences and to plan for future successes and rewards.

Start your engines Chase for the Sprint Cup starts Sunday

By Mark Gregory sports reporter

Momentum is a big thing in any sport. There is no one who has more momentum in NASCAR than Matt Kenseth and the No. 20 Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing. Kenseth, last season’s winner at Chicagoland Speedway, won the final race of the regular season at Richmond heading into the Chase for the Sprint Cup which begins Sunday in the MyAFibRisk.com 400 in Joliet. The win was Kenseth’s fourth of the season and third in the last six races. “It was great to get the win. Richmond, when I came to JGR, was one of their best tracks. In the last couple years, it’s been one of our worst as a group. You want to win every week. I’ll tell you, if you could do this every week, you would,” Kenseth said after the win. “So it’s not like you can do anything extra or anything necessarily better. I will say it feels really good. It’s good for all of our

When the NASCAR Chase starts Sunday in Joliet drivers (Back row L-R) Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, (front row L-R) Jamie McMurray, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson will begin their quest for the Sprint Cup Championship. confidence, probably especially mine.” Not only did Kenseth finish with momentum, the entire Gibbs team did, as teammate Kyle Busch finished second, Denny Hamlin sixth and Carl Edwards 11th. Hamlin will race the rest of the

season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He tore the ACL the Tuesday before Richmond in a pick-up basketball game. “I feel like as a company right now, all four cars are really strong,” Kenseth said. “I felt

like we were really strong in the Chase in 2013. We ended up getting beat, but we were pretty strong, won a couple races, led a lot of laps. Jimmie beat us. We were really good. I feel like as a company right now, we’re stronger than we were in ‘13. We had a lot

of different things happen, where all four of us now have been able to win races and we’re all in the Chase. I feel like all four teams are really competitive. I think we were one through four at one point

Romeoville loses big to Minooka in SPC opener By Tory Dean for the bugle

www.buglenewspapers.com @Voyager_Sport

The Minooka Indians took the field Friday night against the visiting Romeoville Spartans in conference play, the Indians would come out on top 46-0. On the very first play following the opening kickoff, the Spartans fumbled the ball and the Indians would recover in the red zone. The Indians offense wouldn’t take advantage of the turnover and the teams would exchange possessions until a 4-yard touchdown pass from John Carnagio to Michael Malinowski with 4 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The missed extra point made the score 6-0. The ground game seemed to be the theme for the Spartans as they looked to score their first points of the evening. They would not convert on the next drive, and would punt the ball to the Indians. It wasn’t long before Minooka would find their way into the end zone again. A 6-yard touchdown run by Jaccor Blankey would increase the Indians momentum, as the Spartans looked to rally now being down 12-0. That momentum would roll over into the second quarter for the Indians as they drove the ball to the goal line, but would fumble in the end zone resulting in a touchback for the Spartans. Romeoville’s offense couldn’t take

advantage of the turnover and the team would exchange possessions until the Indians found the end zone though the air. A 33-yard pass from Carnagio to Quintin Durov and Brennan Loughran’s extra point gave Minooka a 19-point lead. At halftime the Indians racked up 96 rushing yards and 134 passing yards, while the Spartans only managed 74 yards rushing and five yards passing. The second half mirrored the first as Minooka would rush for three more touchdowns and pass for one. Romeoville quarterback Anthony Kitchens only completed 2 of 24 passes for 17 yards on the night with one interception. Both of the Spartans receptions came from wide receiver Manuel Nartey. Romeoville running back Jordan Nettles rushed for 55 yards and had two fumbles in the process. Minooka quarterback John Carnagio had himself a game completing 16 of 20 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns, hooking up with six different receivers in the process. Isaiah Hill was the leading receiver on the evening with 6 receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Minooka running back Jaccor Blankey was the leading rusher going for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Romeoville (0-3) looks to get their first win of the season at home next week against Plainfield Central in conference play. (3-0)

Minooka looks to keep their win streak going next week as they face conference opponent Oswego. Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson declined comment. • Bolingbrook fell 38-20 to Sandburg, moving to 1-2 on teh season. Mike Freeze completed 11 of 29 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns - one to linebacker Tuf Borland who was in at tight end. Freeze had seven carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.

SOCCER Bolingbrook soccer went 3-0 last week to move to 8-1 on the season. The Raiders defeated Reavis 3-0 in the second round of the LincolnWay tournament. Luis Flores tallied his eighth goal of the season, while Victor Morales also scored. Tyler Elmore and Anguel Sanchez tallied assists, while Brandon Murillo made six saves, notching his fifth shutout of season. Earlier in the week, Murillo notched a SouthWest Suburban Conference shutout as Bolingbrook blanked Homewood-Flossmoor 3-0. Sanchez scored a pair of goals, while Jarrid Gordon added one. Assists came from Erick Gonzalez (2) and Flores. Murillo made five saves. The Raiders also beat LincolnWay West 4-2. Gonzalez had a pair of goals, while Flores and Alan Moscosa had one each. Murillo posted five saves for the win.

T h ur sday, Septem ber 17, 2015 | bug lenew spapers.com nascar | from page 11 tonight. I feel like as a company, we’re stronger this year.” All four made the Chase and will be competing for the title, the second for JGR since NASCAR went to the Chase format and the first while driving Toyota. Kenseth is currently tied atop the Chase standings with six-time champion Jimmie Johnson and

Busch. Although they are tied as the points reset, Johnson is technically the No. 1 seed, followed by Bush and Kenseth. All three have 2012 points. Points for all 16 Chase drivers are reset to 2000 with three bonus points being awarded for each win during the regular season. There are 10 races in the Chase with the four drivers with the lowest point

totals being eliminated after three races, four more after the sixth and four more after the ninth. The four drivers left standing at Homestead race for a winnertake-all race, with the driver finishing the highest of the four being awarded the Sprint Cup Championship. Last season’s winner Kevin Harvick is fifth and is ready to defend his title. “I feel like as a team we have been there, done that,” he said. “We’ve been in Phoenix and Homestead pressure situations and succeeded in both of those situations. I think when you look at the group there’s not a lot of them that have done that, and you’ve just got to keep pressure on them, and I think as you go into Chicago, you just know that you’re not going to make any friends and you don’t have to worry about it. You have to worry about what you have to do to advance to get to the next round every three weeks, and whatever the scorecard looks like or whatever you have to do is what you have to do. It’s not about making more friends. “It’s a whole different mindset as you go into Chicago, and it’s kind of take no prisoners. I don’t like you and I know they don’t like me, so you race like that on every lap, and we’re going to go after it.” Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is sixth in the standings, while Kurt Busch, Edwards, Brad Keslowski and Martin Truex, Jr. round out the top 10. Jeff Gordon made the Chase in his final season as a driver, as he announced in January that he will retire after this season. Joining long-time Chase competitors will be first timers Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard. Menard held onto the final spot in the field when Aric Almirola, who finished fourth in the race, failed to take the checkered flag. “Everything resets now, so Chicago has been a pretty good track for us,” Menard said. “I feel good about our intermediate track program. Man, we had a fast car tonight, it just burned the leftfront tire off after 30, 40 laps and we started going backwards. Try to figure out what happened there, but Chicago is a whole new animal, and it’s a track I really enjoy.” McMurray’s finished in the series standings is 11th, in 2004. That was the first year of the Chase, when only 10 drivers competed for the title and McMurray was the highest finishing non-Chase driver at the end of the year.

Plans in place for new luxury apartments Developer expects to break ground on complex this fall By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

After months of review, final development plans call for the construction of new luxury apartments on 18 acres of vacant land at the northwest corner of Weber and Renwick roads. National developer Continental Properties plans to break ground this fall on the high-end apartment complex, the Springs at Weber Road. The amenity-driven, luxury complex will include 15 two-story units comprised of 30 studio apartments, 112 one-bedroom units, 120 two-bedroom units, and 30 three-bedroom units. The property in the Rose Plaza Shopping center was originally slated for a possible big box retailer. As such retail has slowed, the village had approved the rezoning of the property as residential. The Wisconsin-based developer initially introduced its concept plan earlier this year. Since then, plans

Rendering courtesy of Continental Properties Company

have changed considerably after meeting design and density issues brought forth by the village. “It has been a lengthy process and we have been working for some time,” said Mayor John Noak. “We have gone through several layers and met with a lot of the community about the project. The density is now less than existing apartment developments. Traffic was a concern but comparing it to its initial use as retail, this creates less of an impact. The developer has reduced the size based on input from the community and increased open space at the request of trustees; and now both entrances have full access points to allow maximum flow for residents.” Concerned with the number of apartments on the site, the number of units has decreased to 15.8 units

per acre. Community development director Steve Rockwell reported this is lower than the current apartment complexes in the village, including Remington Apartments which is at 16.7 and 16.8 at High Point Apartments. Trustee Sue Miklevitz who originally brought up the concern was satisfied and pleased with the change also noting the inclusion of additional open space that will provide for a possible playground and gathering space for the residents. “I appreciate the change,” said Miklevitz. “Density has a lot to do with quality of life and I want to make sure residents have that quality of life. My reputation is on the line with a vote for the project. I want to make sure that the project just doesn’t look good now but ten

years from now. I want to know that that anything we vote on is to enhance Romeoville and be something we are proud of.” To that end, Eric Thom, representative for Continental Properties, said because of the recommendations and concerns of the board, the group has altered its development plans essentially increasing the investment of the project from $35 million to $42 million. He explained that part of reason Continental looked at the site was because of the significant demand for rental housing which continues to increase. “Statistics show that 69 percent of housing is rentals,” said Thom. “More households will require this housing segment and this is the nicest you can get. For an example, a studio apartment, our lowest price point, will be $1,000 a month. That gives perspective as to how nice they will be as opposed to what

exists today.” In addition, the developer agreed to a number of covenants pertaining to the property that it will always be under professional management and full-time staff with a reserve account in place with dedicated funds for the continued upkeep of the property. Noak described the privately financed development as the top of the line for suburban development. The Springs have more of a townhouse feel, the apartments are seen as an amenity-driven product that would include private grounds and entrances; attached and detached garages, a 24-hour fitness center, larger gathering rooms, pool, cooking area, dog park and car wash area. he developer expects to have the project fully leased within two years. As of Sept. 25, the developer will have a website up and running at www.springsapartments.com for potential leases.
