Empowering women, saving lives Annual rally against domestic violence scheduled for Thursday By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Waking each day with the threat of a slap, a push or verbal abuse is a bewildering and debilitating way to live, but this is the reality for thousands of people, including many children. Helping victims come forward is a never-ending process and is the mission of one local organization dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence and its many forms. The goal of Citizens Against Abuse is to reach those victims and give them the support they need to seek help. “We want them to know that they are not alone,” said Sandy Iversen, chairwoman of Citizens Against Abuse, formerly known as Take Back the Night. The group is inviting the community to come out to partake in the 17th annual Rally and March Against Abuse from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at DuPage Township’s Joseph and Sarah Levy Center, 251 Canterbury Drive, Bolingbrook. The free event is open to the public and will focus on empowering women. Will County

State’s Attorney James Glasgow will be the keynote speaker of the event, which will culminate with a rally and march. Glasgow is expected to speak about domestic violence and the many ways it affects people’s lives, including physical, emotional and financial abuse. He will share information and tools on how victims can escape a situation that destroys their self-esteem and puts them in danger. Iverson explained that emotional levels of abuse are getting worse as technology advances, with abusers tracking their victims every move. With GPS and spyware on phones, a victim can feel powerless to escape. According to an NPR report, 85 percent of the 70 domestic-violence shelters included in its survey said they were working with victims who were being tracked by their abuser with GPS. Seventy-five percent said they were working with victims whose abusers eavesdropped on their conversations remotely with tools such as hidden mobile apps. Because of this, nearly half of the shelters included in the survey have policies in place to prohibit Facebook on premises due to concerns that stalkers will be able to pinpoint the location. Abusers try to isolate their victims, explains Iversen, and the goal for such events is to inform victims that there are resources available to them. Citizens Against abuse is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization located

“If we don’t bring awareness, people tend to brush it under the rug. If we talk to one woman each year, we’ve reached our goal.” Sandy Iversen, Citizens Against Abuse in the Bolingbrook area that hopes to inspire unified action towards domestic violence’s elimination and prevention, while remembering victims, empowering survivors and providing resources to those it affects. “The rally itself is meant to bring awareness,” Iversen said. “We want to get the word out about what domestic violence and that if someone is experiencing this to come forward and realize it is not normal for people to do this and that there is a way out. This is a problem that crosses all socio, economical and religious barriers. It affects all type of people.” Those attending the rally do not have to publicly speak but are encouraged to seek out a counselor on-site who can evaluate their situation and offer assistance. “People don’t like to talk about domestic violence---that’s why we continue to do this each year. If we don’t bring awareness, people tend to brush it under the rug. If we talk to one woman each year, we’ve reached our goal.”

Valley View School District passes balanced budget Fiscal 2016 budget approximately $256 million By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

For the first time in five years, the Valley View School District passed a balanced budget for fiscal year 2016 with an overall budget of approximately $256 million, a 3.2 percent increase over last year. “Through good stewardship, administration and the board, we have weathered this storm without layoffs and slashing staff which other districts have had to do,” School Board President Steven Quigley said. “We’ve done all this without charging high fees or sacrificing class sizes and we had to do this because it is the right thing to do. …This is because of the candor between Gary Grizaffi and the administration and the board planning for how things are going to

be three to five years down the road. We are not a borrowing district; we did not have to do that. “ Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi agreed. “This is good news and it is nice to see the ship steered in the right direction, so to speak,” he said. With an increase of $1.6 million, or .5 percent over last year’s budget, the district will have approximately $227 million in operating funds. Less than $52 million of the funding is to come from the state, though those funds are still pending with an unbalanced state budget and $16.43 million in federal dollars. The remainder, some $185 million, comes from local resources. According to Grizaffi, the 2015 property tax levy will be limited by the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, as it has been since 1991. The limit for 2015 is .8 percent of the 2014 extension, or an estimated $1 million of additional local property tax revenue, half of which is to be received in the 201516 school year. This is a decrease over last year when the district realized a $2.2 million increase of additional revenue generated by

the tax levy. Grizaffi explained that revenue from the state is expected to be prorated again this fiscal year. Though the district will see an increase of $3.84 million in General State Aid in the 2014-15 school year, the GSA proration at 92.08 percent represents a loss of $2.9 million. In addition, transportation reimbursement continues to decrease by $1.12 million dating back to 2010. Major changes in the 2015-2016 budget will account for the addition of $896,000 for Pre-K Expansion grant program and an increase in salary costs of 3 percent per labor agreements totaling $4.1 million. However, the district will see a decrease of $4.5 million in benefits/ claims costs. Some medical benefits were cut for employee spouses and a one-time $1,000 offset per contract was accepted and included in this budget; tuition budget for outside placement students reduced by $340,000; guest teacher rate increased by $200,000; post retirement incentives are included at slightly more than $1 million and the district will include an increase of $1.6 million in its scheduled debt service payment, an increase of 6.2 percent. “We continue to monitor our low point balance threshold, targeting 30 days of operating reserve preJune property tax collections. As mentioned previously I remain very cautious about the budget due to the State not having approved a state-wide budget without any new revenue identified as a means to support a proposed spending plan,” warned Grizaffi.

Metal Monkey brings brew to Romeoville Brewery known for use of locally sourced ingredients By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Craft beer drinkers delight, the Metal Monkey Brewing is coming to Romeoville. The Romeoville Village Board recently approved plans for the brewery to operate in a warehouse in an industrial business park at 515 Anderson Ave. With more than a decade of experience, a trio of friends developed Metal Monkey Brewing, known for its use of locally sourced ingredients in small, hand-crafted batches. The crew has already received numerous awards for its brews. Dan Camp, managing member of Metal Monkey, reported that the initial annual production will be 500 barrels, or 15,500 gallons, with the ability to increase to 1,000 barrels, or 31,000 gallons, based on available equipment. He explained that prior to prohibition in the U.S., it was common for every town to have its own brewery to supply fresh beer. With the popularity of craft beer in America today, Camp said he thinks things are slowly returning to that state. “It’s estimated that by the

end of the year, the number of breweries in the U.S. will surpass pre-prohibition numbers, and today we’ve got more than three times the population from back then,” Camp said. “There’s no better way to enjoy a handcrafted beer than when it’s fresh and right from the source, and were really anxious to provide that experience to our friends and neighbors.” On-site, Metal Monkey will serve limited amounts of beer in its tasting room and patrons will be allowed to purchase growlers for off-site consumption. Camp said the group has been working with state and local governments to obtain various licenses. “The village of Romeoville has been great in helping us through the process, and I can say we wouldn’t be this far along without them,” said Camp. The microbrewery is slated to open in November.

Grants help high school expand its edible garden Grants courtesy of Valley View School District Nutrition Services and Lowe’s Toolbox for Learning Romeoville High School is well on its way to converting what originally was designed as a learning garden into a full-fledged edible garden and outdoor classroom, courtesy of grants from the Valley View School District Nutrition Services and Lowe’s Toolbox for Learning. The garden, located in the southwest corner of the school, now includes 19 different planting beds, cedar boxes, tables, benches, pergolas, arbors, walking paths and greenhouse. “It was really important to continue the momentum we started four years ago through the original grant from Lowe’s,” said Rick Rujawitz, chair of the RHS career and technical education and humanities departments. “We’ve made a lot of progress but there’s still a lot of work to be done.” In addition to the cherry red tomatoes, lettuce and radishes the garden has already produced for the RHS cafeteria; it has also generated a variety of tasks and future ideas for RHS students. RHS students help with the planting of seeds and often join in the maintenance of not only the edible garden but also a second garden that is producing pumpkins, Indian corn and gourds. “We’re thinking of doing a fall sale if we can get a big enough yield,” Rujawitz said. “Any money we make would go back to the garden to buy some more seed for next year.” Future dreams include putting

more bushes around the fencedin edible garden to add color, and planting flowers so business entrepreneurship students can become involved in some sort of business ownership plan selling flowers for special holidays like Mother’s Day. “It’s all a vision right now,” Rujawitz said. “It’s just a matter of getting it done and having enough items to sell.” Rujawitz also hopes more faculty members will use the garden as a learning tool or class meeting space.

Last Thursday, the latest in a series of horrific mass shootings occurred at an Oregon community college. The perpetrator, whose name I will not mention, by jonathan samples walked into Umpqua managing editor Community College and killed at least nine people and seriously injured several others. As for the motives behind this senseless act of violence, I will not speculate. But what I will say is that I, like many of you, am disgusted with what has becoming a disturbing trend in our country. I’m disgusted with the frequency of these tragedies. A Mother Jones’ investigation into U.S. mass shootings found that 308 people have been killed and 220 injured between 2005 and July 16, 2015, in mass murders involving a firearm. The families of these victims and countless others have suffered irreparable harm. I’m disgusted with the passive

coverage of these incidents by a mostly exploitative media, highlighting the carnage and ignoring the cause. This abdication of responsibility by “news” outlets that recognize the potential of these stories to draw an audience, but fail to accept their obligation to question and challenge the culture in which they occur, is inexcusable. I’m disgusted with how desensitized our country has become to mass killings, setting a timetable of interest and outrage, and seeing little more than “hashtag” activism as a response. I’m disgusted with feelings of discomfort that sometimes arise during large social gatherings and with the specter of tragedy that has no chance to dissipate in the short lapses of time between these awful incidents. I’m disgusted with the lack of empathy and action from our leaders and representatives in response to this disturbing trend, offering instead staged displays of sympathy to the families of victims but ignoring their pleas for changes to this country’s gun laws. I’m disgusted with the idealism displayed by both sides of the debate over how guns fit into our present culture – an idealism that clouds any meaningful discussion of the issue and prevents any response to these tragedies. I’m disgusted with the glorification of firearms and gun culture in this

country. This way of thinking has propelled the U.S. to No. 1 in every meaningful statistic related to gun ownership and gun violence. The Council on Foreign Relations found that the U.S. ranks No. 1 in firearms per capita and contains 35-50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned firearms, despite having less than 5 percent of the world’s population. Among developed nations, the U.S. also has the highest rate of homicides by firearms. Additionally, research by Politifact found that the number of people killed by gunfire in the U.S. between 1968 and 2011 is greater than the total number of U.S. deaths in every war it has fought. From the Revolutionary War to the Iraq war, 1.2 million Americans were killed in those conflicts. In the 43-year period studied by Politifact, there were 1.4 million firearm deaths. It has been made unbearably clear by gun-rights advocates such as NRA President Wayne LaPierre that the “right” to bear arms is more important than the unalienable right of U.S. citizens to live without the threat of gun violence. We take these truths to be self evident, that all people have the right to safety and wellbeing; that a 227-year-old passage should serve more as roadmap and less as dogma; and that we as a united people must find the courage and understanding to prevent the next mass murder. If the fetishizaiton of firearms is a fundamental piece of our identity as Americans, then perhaps it’s time we reinvent ourselves.

White Oak libraries are our community ‘Knowledge Place’ A few months ago I wrote about a “Sanction Place.” There is also a “Knowledge Place.” This place is our three Crest Hill, Lockport and Romeoville White Oak libraries. They are a quiet place, but vibrant with integrity. Many residents bring in their discarded books. They are placed in the Book Nook, Amazon or sold. The “Friends of the Library” help with the sale of these books. All monies collected go back to the three libraries for whatever is needed. As of the current month, an approximate amount collected is $10,000. The dedication of

these members is outstanding. They all connect as a team with all three library staff. The “Knowledge Place” title was commented by Scott Pointon, director of the three White Oak libraries. He advised the increase of check out books was 7.78 percent. This is amazing. The “book lovers day” was a big success. Elizabeth Berg, in person, gave a talk on her historical fiction. There was a question and answer session. The room at our Romeoville Library was filled to capacity. It was very informative. I truly enjoyed this knowledgeable day.

Our three libraries continually promote awareness of history and current events. Literacy is important. The promotion of reading books is forefront at all times. Their purpose is to put a book in the hand of ALL children and adults. Our three White Oak Libraries are a perfect example of the joy in the pursuit of reading. They are proud to be a hub for anyone to visit and learn.

Spartans learning Young Romeoville volleyball team is getting better with time

By Scott Taylor sports editor

staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports

It was a tough week for Romeoville, which faced a couple of the top teams in the Southwest Prairie Conference, falling to both Minooka and Plainfield East in straight sets. In the loss to the Bengals, the Spartans battled back from a 10-5 deficit in the second set to lead 17-15 before falling 25-19 for the second straight set. “We do battle back, but we don’t know how to pull through all the way,” Romeoville coach Sara Olszta said. “That’s a little frustrating to see and we have to keep working on that and being able to push through that adversity.” It was Michigan-bound setter MacKenzi Welsh that made the difference, as she served the first four points in the set and added an eight-point run to take a 23-17 lead late in the set. “She has a phenomenal serve,” Olszta said of Welsh. “It dropped in front of us a lot. We didn’t make the adjustment and mentally fell apart out there, which is on us. But she is a great overall player and server.” Throughout the match the Spartans played with just one senior on the court, libero Casey Sturmon, as middle Andrea Chaidez was out with injury. “We are a young team and

hopeful for the future with all the young girls out there,” Olszta said. “We’ve definitely improved throughout the year and looking forward to the second half of the season. We’ve really come a long way technique wise, but we self-destruct. We all need to pull together as a team.” With the young squad, the Spartans are looking to show improvements and continue to develop by the end of the season. “The season has been ok,” Olszta said. “We have some really high and low moments. We want to be able to fix the mistakes we make in the future.” Romeoville is also young on the coaching front, as Olszta is in her first year as head coach of the Spartans. The Lockport and Benedictine player and alum, Olszta was a volunteer assistant last year. “I’m young and a first year coach, but I’m really excited to be with them,” Olszta said. “I’m excited to see where this program goes.”

FOOTBALL Romeoville fell to Plainfield South 55-14 Friday. Tyree Allen scored on a 26-yard touchdown run and Jordan Nettles had a 60-yard touchdown catch from Anthony Kitchens. Kitchens added a two-point conversion run.

LEWIS

Lewis men, women both defeat McKendree Ladies earn 3-1 win, while guys earn first GLVC victory with 1-0 shutout Lewis women’s soccer never trailed in their 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at McKendree on Sunday (Oct. 4) afternoon. “I feel like we did a lot of the same things today, that we did on Friday,” Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. “This has been one of the more consistent weekends we’ve seen. It is great to bounce back with two solid performances after last weekend.” The visiting Flyers controlled the first 30 minutes until McKendree started to put some shots together. Lewis sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./ Lockport) made several saves and aggressive plays to help keep the game 0-0. In the 43rd minute Lewis put one in the back of the net. A throw in towards the box and found sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) racing down the middle of the field toward the goal. She took it on one bounce and put it in the net with such force it ricocheted out of the back goal. It was her fourth goal of the season. Lewis made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. A long pass from beyond midfield found senior Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) on the left corner of the box. She worked around three defenders to find space to get off a shot into the right side of the

goal. McKendree made it 2-1 when Cassie Kaiping scored with 31 minutes remaining in the game. Lewis put the game away in the 82nd minute on a goal by junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg). She jumped on a failed clearing pass and scored right in front of the net to the right of keeper. It was Carmody’s third goal of the year. “I think what I was happiest with was the way we responded

after McKendree put one in,” Koenig said. “They put us under pressure and we were able to get back in control of the game and then get that third goal.” Both squads recorded 13 shots while Lewis held a 5-2 edge in corners. “McKendree is a very direct team,” Koenig said. “They play in ball after ball. I thought our backs did a good job of bending and not breaking and Jennifer read things well coming of her line.” McKendree falls to 5-4-2 (4-31 GLVC). Lewis improves to 6-32 (4-2-2 GLVC). Lewis returns home on Friday

(Oct. 9) to face Southern Indiana in a 5 p.m. start. • The Lewis University men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over McKendree University at Leemon Field on Sunday (Oct. 4) afternoon. Despite it being the Flyers’ first ‘W’, Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles is taking the victory in stride. “We’re just trying to get better each day and play better on both sides of the ball,” Fiffles said. With the win, Lewis improves to 1-8-1 overall and 1-6-1 in GLVC action, while the host Bearcats

fall to 4-5 on the campaign and 4-4 in conference play. Lewis senior Luke Comerouski (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) broke a scoreless tie in the 64th minute, as he took a feed from freshman Frank Estrada (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) for the game-winning score. Lewis goalkeeper Justin Salazar (Elburn, Ill./Hinckley Big Rock) made four saves for the Flyers to earn his second shutout of the season. McKendree netminder Scott Armstead stopped four Flyer shots. McKendree outshot the Flyers, 16-15, while Lewis held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

However, the team responded better than can be hoped for with both the men and women winning every event. We had some very promising swims and it was a great way to start the year.” In his first meet as a Flyer, sophomore Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/Svenborg Gymnasium) won the 200 IM (1:57.54) and 100 backstroke (52.14). He also swam the first leg of Lewis’ victory in the 200 medley relay (1:35.60). Senior Zach Ballon (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) used a time of 59.52 to pull off a win in the 100 breaststroke. “We have a large incoming class with a mix of freshmen and transfers,” Karns said. “I didn’t realize it until watching the meet but in a few events, all of our swimmers were in their first meet for Lewis. Today’s results shows a lot of promise for the season.” Saturday’s meet was Lewis’ earliest start ever to a season. The Flyers return to the pool on Oct. 23 in a home meet with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe William Jewell at 5 p.m. • Lewis women’s swimming won all 11 events on Saturday (Oct. 3) in a 146-45 season opening victory at NCAA Division I Valparaiso.

We had some very promising swims and it was a great way to start the year.” Senior Montana Clasby (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) picked
