TO KEEP BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY an institutio n of choice for the students who study here each year, we are constantly planning for the future, enhancing academics, upgrading facilit ies and studying projected employment needs. The observance of Bloomsburg’s 175th anniversary encourage s us to pause, look back at our many accomplishment s, both collectively and ind ivid ual ly, and celebrate who we were, who we are and wh o we will be. The world was a very differe nt place when our predecess or, the Literary Academy, was established in 1839 “to teach the elements of a cla ssic al education.” However, that year in Lexington, Mass., an experimental nor ma l school opened as the first state-funded institution spe cifically established for tea che r education. Starting with just three students, the sch ool in Massachusetts served as a forerunner of what our academy would become wh en it was purchased by the Co mmonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916 and renamed the Bloomsburg State Norm al School. In the following calendar pag es, Bloomsburg University’s rich history as normal school, state teachers colleg e, state college and universit y is illustrated through archival photographs and notations on significant dat es. Th is is who we were, who we are and the foundation of who we will become as we con tin ue to meet students’ educational needs in the Co lleges of Business, Educatio n, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology. I am proud of my place in Bloomsburg University’s his tory as the 18th president. am even prouder of the suc I cesses of the nearly 85,000 alu mni who graduated from our institution over the yea rs and of the potential of our more than 10,000 current students. Thank you for cel ebrating Bloomsburg’s 175 th anniversary with us.

Sincerely,

DA VID SOLTZ President, Bloomsburg Un iversity
