QUICK SIX -Franklyn Quiteh leads all of Division II with 194.3 yards rushing per game this season. -The Huskies now boast the PSAC’s all-time leaders in career rushing yardage (Franklyn Quiteh) and field goals made (Danny Fisher). -Bloomsburg is 3-0 for the third straight year. The Huskies seek their third consecutive 4-0 start with a win this week. -Huskies interim head coach Paul Darragh is the first Bloomsburg coach to win his first three games since Jack Yohe did so in 1952. A win on Saturday would make Darragh the first Bloomsburg head coach to start his tenure 4-0. -Bloomsburg has won eight straight vs. Lock Haven at Redman Stadium. The last Huskies home loss to Lock Haven came in 1992 when the Bald Eagles won 38-33. -The Huskies have scored 20 or more points in 16 consecutive games, the second longest streak in school history. The Huskies can tie the record of 17 straight set between 2000-01 on Saturday. TODAY’S MATCHUP Saturday’s game sees Bloomsburg welcome PSAC East newcomer Lock Haven to Redman Stadium with the nationally-ranked Huskies seeking to keep their record unblemished. Bloomsburg returns home for the first time since Week 1 when it opened the year in impressive fashion, dominating non-conference opponent Stonehill on the way to a 41-13 win. Lock Haven brings a 2-1 record to town, already securing its first two-win season since 2006. Despite the winning record, the Bald Eagles are allowing over 363 yards per game while gaining just 283 themselves. The largest difference between the two teams comes on the ground where Bloomsburg averages over 248 yards per game more than Lock Haven (359.7111.0).

THE HEAD COACHES The more things change, the more they stay the same might be the motto for the Huskies this COACHING Head Coach.......John Allen(James Madison ‘96) fall. coordinator. Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top half of the PSAC in total defense in seven of the past 11 seasons. Darragh has started his tenure as head coach with a 3-0 record, the first Bloomsburg coach to win his first three games since Jack Yohe did so in 1952. John Allen is in his third season at the helm of Lock Haven, working toward turning around the Bald Eagles program by already scoring two wins in a season for the first time in seven years. Allen led Lock Haven to snap its five yearlong losing streak when it defeated Cheyney, 15-7, in the season finale last fall. Lock Haven had a few narrow misses before the Cheyney win, dropping a 19-10 decision on the road at Mercyhurst and then watched Clarion score a game-winning touchdown with two seconds remaining on Homecoming. Prior to taking over at Lock Haven in March of 2011, Allen was the coordinator of player development at Penn State from 2008-11 and was also the head coach of the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe and also spent three years as offensive coordinator for the Amsterdam Admirals, winning the World Bowl in 2005. LAST MEETING Because Lock Haven was a part of the PSAC Western Division until this year, the Huskies and Bald Eagles did not previously meet each year. As such, the last time the schools met in football was in the 2011 season finale at Redman Stadium when the Huskies closed out the year with a 34-3 victory on Nov. 12, 2011. Bloomsburg took a commanding 27-0 lead at halftime and never looked back behind 317 yards of rushing. Franklyn Quiteh ran for 120 yards while Lock Haven’s Brandon Brader carried 34 times for 122 yards.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

LAST TIME OUT Bloomsburg took what had been a close game and turned it into a 31-12 victory with a second half surge at rival Kutztown last Saturday. Despite trailing in first downs and time of possession for the first time this year, the Huskies used key defensive stops and timely offensive outbursts to pull away late. Ahead 10-6 midway through the third quarter, Tim Kelly found Connor Gades for a 34-yard touchdown strike to change the complexion of the game with the visitors never looking back. Larry Webster dominated on defense with four sacks while Franklyn Quiteh paced the offense with 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Bloomsburg completely bottled up the Kutztown run game which accounted for -3 yards rushing, but the Golden Bears were able to throw for 351 yards behind freshman quarterback Alec Werner. Lock Haven improved to 2-1 on the year behind a 12-10 win at home over Cheyney last week. The Bald Eagles needed just 121 yards of total offense to secure the victory, led by Brandon Brader’s 56 yards on 17 carries. Lock Haven placekicker Alex Boumerhi’s 46-yard FG blast marked the longest field goal for an LHU kicker since a 43-yarder by Dan Hagerman in 2005 vs. Cheyney. OFFENSE STILL STREAKIN’ The Bloomsburg offense has scored 20 or more points in 16 straight games - the second longest such streak in school history. The BU record is 17 straight games set between 2000-01. CHANCE FOR HISTORY Bloomsburg has made its fair share of history in recent weeks and has the opportunity for another historical moment on Saturday vs. Lock Haven. Interim head coach Paul Darragh has tied the school record for consecutive wins to start a career, tying Jack Yohe (1952), Thornley Booth (1926) and George Harry (1909). While Yohe, Booth and Harry all had to travel for road games in their fourth contest, Darragh has the luxury of attempting for a 4-0 start on home turf. HUSKIES IN ELITE COMPANY Bloomsburg enters the 2013 season having won seven or more games in 14 consecutive seasons. Only five schools in the divisions of the NCAA have longer streaks: Florida, Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; NW Missouri in Division II; and Mt. Union in Division III. The 14-year streak is also a PSAC record, breaking IUP’s mark of 13 set from 1984-1996. NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Huskies’ jumped two spots to No. 11 in the Week One American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Monday. On Tuesday, the Huskies were ranked No. 12 in the latest edition of the D2Football.com national Top 25. The Huskies also began the season ranked in multiple other national polls. Lindy’s Football

Annual tabbed BU at No. 10 in Division II while The Sporting News listed the Huskies at No. 17 in the country. ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE Franklyn Quiteh has been a model of consistency during his time in maroon and gold. The senior running back has set the school and conference records for career rushing yardage due to his consistency – his 170-yard performance on the ground vs. Kutztown last week marked the 35th time Quiteh has surpassed 100 yards rushing. For his career entering the Lock Haven game, Quiteh has rushed for 100 or more yards in 35 of his 38 games with the Huskies, including 20 straight contests. WEBSTER WINS PSAC WEEKLY AWARD Larry Webster earned PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week honors after scoring four sacks at Kutztown. The tally marked a new careerhigh for Webster, beating his previous best of three sacks set at Slippery Rock last season. Along with the four sacks, he also had five tackles, a pass breakup and an additional quarterback hurry while the sacks totaled a loss of 28 yards for the Kutztown offense. In 15 career games, Webster has tallied 18.5 sacks. IT ALL STARTS UP FRONT The strength of the Huskies for many years has stemmed from its running game. Quiteh is the first to credit the work of the line in front of him for their part in his record-setting career. The veteran trio of Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck have 94 starts among them during their BU careers. Steck leads the team with 39 consecutive starts, never missing from the starting lineup during his three-plus year tenure in maroon and gold. Last season, the Huskies ranked fifth in Division II rushing offense at 315.75 yards per game and set the single-season PSAC rushing record with 3,789 yards. The O-Line also surrendered just two sacks over the season’s final seven games, leading the PSAC and ranking seventh in Division II at 0.67 sacks allowed per game. REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME Both Connor Gades and Tony Peregrin made their first career visits to the end zone at Kutztown with touchdown receptions vs. the Golden Bears. Gades’ scoring reception was perhaps the key play of the game – with BU leading 10-6 and facing third-and-15, quarterback Tim Kelly found Gades in space over the middle for a 34-yard strike to make the score 17-6 and Kutztown would never move any closer. Peregrin’s TD catch gave the Huskies some insurance as he scored from seven yards out early in the fourth quarter. Gades also set career highs for receptions (four) and receiving yards (57).

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

@BUSPORTSINFO • #BUHUSKIES

MAKING HISTORY Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh is re-writing the PSAC record books this season by setting the conference’s all-time record for most career rushing yards. Quiteh broke the record with an eight-yard carry in the fourth quarter at Edinboro in Week 2 as part of a 231-yard performance. He now sets his sights on the all-time Division II record books, moving to 15th place alltime in D-II history with 170 yards at Kutztown. Quiteh is currently the leading active rusher in all NCAA divisions (FBS, FCS, II, III) - by a wide margin. His career total is nearly 1,000 yards more than his closest follower, Melikke Van Alstyne of NCAA Division III’s Framingham State (4,994). Quiteh also leads all active NCAA rushers in yards per game (155.6), all-purpose yards (6,190) and rushing touchdowns (66). Quiteh has rushed for over 100 yards in a school-record 20 straight games and 35 of 38 career games. Career Stats 2010 2011 2012 2013

With his 21-yard field goal at Kutztown last Saturday, Danny Fisher broke the all-time conference record for career 3-pointers, connecting on his 51st with the Huskies. The previous mark had been held by Ed Detwiler of East Stroudsburg for over two decades. Fisher captured the career kicking points record the previous week at Edinboro and now has 298 for his career. He currently leads all Division II active players in field goals and is sixth among active players in all divisions (Chandler Catanzaro, Clemson, 58 field goals). Among active leaders in total points in Division II, Franklyn Quiteh leads all players with 408 and Fisher ranks third at 298.

TURNING RED INTO POINTS When in the red zone this season, the Huskies have not squandered scoring opportunities. Through the first three games of the year Bloomsburg has scored in 14 of 15 trips to the red zone – including punching into the end zone 10 times. CONVERTING ON THIRD DOWN Bloomsburg has converted 47.5 percent (19 of 40) of its third down situations this season, second-best in the PSAC. Only West Chester (19 of 37, 51.4 percent) has been better on third down this year. GOING THE DISTANCE The Huskies sealed their victory at Kutztown with a back-breaking 98-yard touchdown drive in seven plays, capped by a 7-yard pass from Tim Kelly to Tony Peregrin. The scoring drive gave BU a 24-6 lead early in the fourth quarter and marks the longest scoring drive for Bloomsburg this season. The drive featured a 65-yard run from Franklyn Quiteh, also the longest play from scrimmage this year from the Huskies. The impressive drive was the first scoring drive by the Huskies of 90 yards or longer since doing so in a win over Gannon on Sept. 29, 2012 and the longest scoring drive since going 99 yards in nine plays in a 38-18 win vs. Shippensburg on Oct. 15, 2011. KNOBLAUCH PICKS ANOTHER Redshirt sophomore safety Tyler Knoblauch hauled in an interception for the second straight game in the Huskies’ 31-12 win at Kutztown. Knoblauch, who saw time as a special teams player in 2012 after missing much of 2011 with injury, became a starter for the first time this year. He recorded his first career interception in Week 2 at Edinboro and is tied with Tomas Cabrera for the team lead in picks. POSTELL SETS CAREER BEST Gary Postell led Bloomsburg with 10 tackles in the victory at Kutztown in Week 3. A redshirt sophomore cornerback, Postell made eight solo stops and assisted on two other tackles at Kutztown. The 10 tackles are a new career-high.

WEEK 4 • VS LOCK HAVEN

@BUSPORTSINFO • #BUHUSKIES COLORING THE RECORD BOOK MAROON AND GOLD Franklyn Quiteh has plenty of BU company atop the PSAC rushing list. Now that Quiteh owns the career conference rushing record, the Huskies occupy three out of the top four all-time PSAC rushing spots - Quiteh, Jamar Brittingham (5,689 yards from 2004-07, second) and Irv Singler (5,105 from 1994-97, fourth). IT’S OLD HAT With his 21-yard field goal at Kutztown to break the PSAC career record of 50 field goals, Danny Fisher has now kicked at least one in 26 games, stretching out his own school record. He broke the record with two field goals in the season-opening win vs. Stonehill, breaking the previous mark of 24 set by Jon Koenig from 2006-09. He enters the Lock Haven game with 51 career 3-pointers. HUSKIES START NEW FACES When Bloomsburg took the field for the season opener vs. Stonehill, eight first-time starters were in the Huskies lineup. Ryan Geiger started at left guard and Dakota Hoagland was at right tackle. Connor Gades got the start at wide receiver and Jack Sandherr was the other offensive newcomer at tight end. Defensively, Larry Webster transitioned to a starting role at defensive end, Shawn Mitchell was at defensive tackle, Andrew Harris at will linebacker and Dylan Spangler at the buck linebacker. All of the offensive newcomers are redshirt sophomores as is Harris while Webster is a graduate student and Mitchell and Spangler are both redshirt juniors. Three more players made their first career start the following week at Edinboro when redshirt sophomore Garrett Pope started at the will linebacker and fellow redshirt sophomores Will Ridgeway and Donovan Morris got the starts at defensive tackle and safety respectively. WAGNER HANDLES THE PUNTING One of two true freshmen on the active roster to start the season, Will Wagner has taken over the Huskies’ punt duties. The native of Wernersville has impressed in his first two games, ranking second in the PSAC in yardage per punt at 43.1 in nine attempts. He booted a new career long of 59 yards at Kutztown, his third punt of 50-plus yards, and has pinned the opposition inside the 20 six times. CAREER DAY FOR MUNGER Redshirt sophomore Dai’Shon Munger steps into a larger role this season as the primary compliment to Franklyn Quiteh in the Huskies’ backfield. Munger made the most of his expanded opportunities against Stonehill, piling up new career highs in attempts (21) and rushing yards (135). His previous best day came against Millersville last season when he finished with 12 carries for 71 yards. Munger nearly broke his own career bests just one week later, picking up 133 yards on 21 carries vs. Edinboro in Week 2. He did set an important personal best - Munger reached the end zone twice for the first time in his young career.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT Redshirt freshman Andrew Harris made a strong first impression during Bloomsburg’s season-opening win over Stonehill, debuting with the Huskies by leading the team in tackles with eight along with a tackle for loss and pass breakup. Harris earned the start in Week One as a late addition to the lineup at the will linebacker position. In Week Two, Harris backed up Garrett Pope, but continued to make waves. He quickly established a new career-high in tackles with 11 including 1.5 tackles for loss. After three games, Harris ranks second on the team in tackles with 26, behind only team captain middle linebacker Justin Shirk (28). CABRERA, QUITEH SWEEP PSAC EAST WEEKLY AWARDS The Huskies swept the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week awards in Week 2 with Franklyn Quiteh earning offensive honors and Tomas Cabrera snagging the defensive accolades. Quiteh’s selection was a near nobrainer after leading the conference with 231 rushing yards along with three touchdowns at Edinboro while establishing a new conference career rushing record. Cabrera earned his award by registering eight tackles to go along with a fumble recovery and interception, both in key situations, to help lead the Huskies to a 47-35 victory on the road. SCORCHING START With their 47-point output in Week 2, the Huskies posted more than 40 points in their first two games of the season for the first time since 1926. That year Bloomsburg opened the year with a 44-0 triumph over Freeland Mining Institute and then downed Lock Haven State Normal School 41-6 in the second game of the campaign. Bloomsburg last scored 40-plus points in three straight games between Weeks 3-5 last year – tallying 44 points vs. Kutztown, 42 at LIU Post and 43 vs. Gannon, all victories. UNWELCOME GUESTS Chances are Edinboro won’t soon forget its meeting with visiting Bloomsburg in Week 2. Not only did Franklyn Quiteh rush for 231 yards to break the PSAC career rushing record that afternoon, but the effort spearheaded Bloomsburg’s 383 yards of rushing. The 383 yards surrendered on the ground by the Fighting Scots were the third-most ever by any Edinboro opponent. HUTTON SETS CAREER BESTS Senior wide receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. has stepped into a leadership role this year as the only wide out with starting experience on the roster entering the season. Hutton looked the part of veteran leader vs. Stonehill in Week 1, tying a career-high in receptions (five) and setting a new personal best for receiving yards (124) while also hauling in a 56-yard touchdown pass from Tim Kelly. Hutton’s previous best day came last year vs. Millersville (five catches, 120 yards).

RACKING UP THE YARDAGE The Huskies had no trouble moving the ball in their 41-13 win over Stonehill in the season opener, racking up 642 total yards of offense. That performance ranks among the top offensive outputs in PSAC history – the showing ties for 30th all-time in the PSAC record books for team yardage gained in a single contest, tying Edinboro’s 642-yard output in 1994 vs. American International. The conference record for yards in a game belongs to California (PA), which put up 757 yards vs. Mansfield in 2005. The most yards put up by a BU team in a single game is 685, which came in a game vs. Kutztown in 2010. PARSNIK MAKES STRONG DEBUT Another redshirt freshman, Joe Parsnik also made an impact in his first action with the Huskies. The Wilkes-Barre native rushed 12 times for 81 yards vs. Stonehill, including a rush of 17 yards. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry while spelling Franklyn Quiteh and Dai’Shon Munger. ‘D’ STRONG VS. STONEHILL Much of the attention following the seasonopening win over Stonehill centered around Bloomsburg’s offense, rushing for 457 yards and posting 642 total yards of offense. Defensively, the Huskies were just as sound. Bloomsburg limited Stonehill to just 198 yards of offense, the fewest yards allowed by the Huskies since giving up only 93 yards vs. Shippensburg on Oct. 16, 2010 – a span of 29 games. CABRERA MAKES AN IMPACT Junior safety Tomas Cabrera is new to the Huskies, but isn’t without college experience. Cabrera comes to Bloomsburg after transferring from Division I Temple. At Temple, Cabrera played primarily on special teams. He was one of five true freshmen to see action for the Owls in 2010, forcing two fumbles, and also played in six games in 2011. Cabrera joined the Huskies this spring and immediately made a big play in his first game – a momentum-changing interception vs. Stonehill. With the Skyhawks looking to tie or take the lead in Huskies territory late in the first quarter, Cabrera made a diving interception at his own 16 to end the threat. Bloomsburg would score a touchdown on its next possession and never relinquished control.

CONTINUING THE TRADITION While there is new leadership for the Huskies on the sidelines this season under interim head coach Paul Darragh, much has remained the same with the BU attack. Under former head coach Danny Hale, the Huskies made their name with a power running game. During Hale’s tenure, 23 separate players put up at least one game of 100 or more yards rushing. Darragh already has two 100-yard rushers as Franklyn Quiteh and Dai’Shon Munger both surpassed the total vs. Stonehill in the first two weeks of the season. NEXT MAN UP Bloomsburg entered the season looking for a solid full-time compliment to Franklyn Quiteh in the backfield. The Huskies may have found more than just one man to fill the role – along with Dai’Shon Munger’s 135 yards, Joe Parsnik also carried 12 times for 81 yards and fullback Matt Wenrich served as more than just a lead blocker, carrying six times for 30 yards and a touchdown in the win over Stonehill. DII’S FINEST During preseason, D2Football.com unveiled its top 100 players in all of NCAA Division II. The Huskies were extremely well represented in that poll, placing three players in the top 11 and five in the top 100 – including taking the top spot. Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh earned the honor as the No. 1 player in the poll, being credited for his speed, vision and ability to break tackles. The two-time Harlon Hill finalist was joined by defensive end Larry Webster (No. 9), offensive guard Brian Clarke (No. 11), center Chris Steck (No. 94) and defensive tackle Chris Kennedy (No. 96). When the D2Football.com preseason AllAmerica teams came out in August, the Huskies also had strong representation - Quiteh and Clarke were each first team selections while Steck and Webster landed on the second team. THEY KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING The 2013 season is the 40th in the history of Redman Stadium. In 2012 Bloomsburg was 5-0 at home, the 10th year the team has been undefeated. The Huskies all-time record in Redman Stadium is now 135-66-4.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

ROSTER NOTES >The Huskies have 11 seniors on the roster. Ten of those players are at least three-year participants in the program. >Eight of the Huskies’ projected starters on defense are in their junior or senior year of eligibility. >The outstanding senior trio on the offensive line of Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck each started all 12 games a season ago. >The offensive line boasts the highest number of combined starts from last year between returning players (36) while the receiving core returns the fewest (six, all by Glenn Hutton Jr.) >Seven returning players started all 12 games last year (Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler, Chris Steck, Tim Kelly, Franklyn Quiteh, Chris Kennedy, David McFadden). Another four players (Justin Shirk, Tony David, D.J. Robinson, Jonathan Patrick) started all but one game in 2012. MR. ALL-AMERICAN Offensive tackle Brian Clarke has established himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the country over the past two seasons and recently earned a bit of national recognition. Clarke earned a spot on this year’s preseason All-American list produced by The Sporting News. CALL ‘EM CAPTAINS Seniors Franklyn Quiteh and Chris Steck along with junior Justin Shirk have been named tricaptains for this season. Steck also served as a team captain a season ago. MAN OF MANY TALENTS Justin Shirk has found athletic success on more than just the football field - he won the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship in the javelin thrown with a toss of 235-11 feet or 71.90 meters. As such, he was selected by DailyRelay.com as part of its “Preseason Track Football Team,” honoring the top two-sport (football and track/field) stars in the country among all divisions. He was one of four linebackers selected along with Courtland Clavette (Brown), Jared Minori (Susquehanna) and Cody Britt (Bethel (MN)). NICE TO MEET YOU While second-year quarterback Tim Kelly has a season of experience under his belt, he will be throwing to a nearly entirely new group of receivers. Senior Glenn Hutton Jr. anchors the group after making 16 receptions for 240 yards and two TDs last year. Redshirt sophomore Connor Gades will get the call on the other side while fellow redshirt sophomore Trent Daniels brings size and speed to the outside. Junior Tony Peregrin has made strides through the spring and preseason workouts and will vie for time as well.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW Last year’s edition of the Huskies set the PSAC record for rushing yards in a season, finishing the year with 3,789 yards on the ground. That was good for an average of 315.75 yards of rushing per game, fifth-best in Division II. GROUND AND POUND The Huskies have had 30 or more rushing attempts in 40 straight contests, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009. LOOKING FOR AN ENCORE Defensive end Larry Webster made his Huskies football debut last year, but he looked every bit the veteran as he quickly became one of the PSAC’s best pass rushers. Webster ranked second in the PSAC in sacks with 13.5, trailing only Cal’s B.J. Stevens (14.5), and his 15.0 tackles for loss were good for fifth in the conference. Webster, who checks in at 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds, spent four years on the hardwood as part of the Huskies’ men’s basketball team. He was the 2011-12 PSAC East Defender of the Year and holds the all-time BU record for career blocks with 175. Webster picked up his first sack of 2013 against Stonehill in the season-opener. SPECIAL K-ICKS This season, the field goals made by senior kicker Danny Fisher will mean a little more than just points on the board for the Huskies. Fisher, the school’s all-time leader in field goals, has created an initiative called “Kick for a Cure” to raise money for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation. For each field goal he kicks this season, Fisher will donate money donated by supporters of the cause to the ASF to go toward disease research and awareness. Fisher developed the idea based on a close family friend battling Angelman syndrome, a neurogenetic disorder similar to autism that is caused by loss of function of a particular gene in the brain during fetal development. For more information on how to help, visit www.angelman.org. WELCOME BACK A key reason for optimism around the Huskies this preseason stems from the amount of familiar faces around practice. More than 40 letterwinners return from last year’s team, including 11 starters - five on offense and six on defense. The Huskies bring back seniors Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck on the offensive line along with senior running back Franklyn Quiteh, redshirt sophomore quarterback Tim Kelly and senior wide receiver Glenn Hutton on offense. Defensively, junior Tony David and David McFadden along with senior Chris Kennedy return along the line as well as junior linebacker Justin Shirk and D.J. Robinson, a junior, and senior Jonathan Patrick in the secondary. Sacks leader Larry Webster also returns with one season of eligibility remaining. On special teams, kicker Danny Fisher also returns. FISHER NAMED TO MITCHELL WATCH LIST Danny Fisher also begins the season on the prestigious Fred Mitchell Award Watch List. Fisher is one of 34 place-kickers across Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA on the list after being nominated by their colleges for their excellence on the field and in the community. Top performers will be announced monthly with the Fred Mitchell Award winner announced in mid-December.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger With Saturday’s victory, Paul Darragh has now won the first three games of his tenure as head football coach, tying the school record for best start. The only others to begin their Bloomsburg coaching careers at 3-0 were Jack Yohe in 1952, Thornley Booth in 1926 and George Harry in 1909. The defense on Saturday held Kutztown to -3 yards on the ground, the lowest rushing total by a Bloomsburg opponent since October 12, 1996. In that 74-13 victory by the Huskies, the Mansfield football team was held to -16 yards rushing. It was the second time that season the Husky defense had held an opponent to negative yards rushing. In the season opener, Wayne State had -5 on the ground. The previous defensive low for Bloomsburg since 1996 had been the 10 yards rushing by East Stroudsburg in 2010. The Huskies have scored 119 points in the first three games, the fourth highest total in school history. The top three years are 149 in 1912, 123 in 1996 and 122 in 2005. The upcoming game with Lock Haven is the 86th in the series between the two schools, the most against a single opponent, dating back to the first meeting in 1908. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous 85 games is 44-38-3, 25-16-3 at home and 19-22 on the road. Since 1984 Bloomsburg is 19-4 versus the Bald Eagles, and since the last loss in 2003, the Huskies have won three straight by a combined score of 151-3.

Paul Darragh was named interim head coach of Bloomsburg University in February 2013 and overall will be starting his 17th season with the Huskies this year. Darragh has served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for the last 16 years. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons. The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leadership, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season. Darragh has also coached 51 first team All-PSAC performers, seven All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010). Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordinator at Gannon. He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before joining the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker.
