BLOOMSBURG WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

HUSKIES OPEN SEASON ON ROAD IN PHILLY

The Bloomsburg women’s basketball team makes the trip to Philadelphia for a date at Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon. The game will be the season-opener for both squads.

SCOUTING CHESTNUT HILL

Chestnut Hill was picked to finish sixth out of the seven teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division in the preseason coaches’ poll this month. The Griffins will look to make their mark in the CACC South behind the junior guard Olivia Gorczynski and a pair of senior forwards in Annie Farrow and Aimee Bouie. Gorczynski shared the team lead in scoring last year (11.1 PPG) and the league’s 11th best three-point shooting percentage (58-of-174, .333), while Farrow and Bouie averaged 5.8 PPG/4.9 RPG and 5.2 PPG/5.7 RPG, respectively. Chestnut Hill finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 6-20 overall record and went 4-15 in conference play. The Griffins were far better on their home court than on the road, going 5-9 at home while only 1-11 away from the friendly confines.

THE BLOOMSBURG-CHESTNUT HILL SERIES

Bloomsburg leads, 5-0 The Huskies are undefeated in their short series tenure against the Griffins, winning all five games against Chestnut Hill. The series began in the 2008-09 season and Bloomsburg has won all five matches by double digits, winning the five games by an average of over 23 points. Bloomsburg has played in Philadelphia at Chestnut Hill twice previously – winning 67-45 on Nov. 16, 2009 and 80-64 on Dec. 19, 2011.

WHEN LAST WE MET

Bloomsburg opened its 2012-13 PSAC Championship season with an 84-54 victory over Chestnut Hill at Nelson Field House on Nov. 9, 2012. Kayla Oxenrider led the Huskies with 19 points and six rebounds as Bloomsburg never trailed after the first two minutes of the game. Latoya Laing had 17 points to lead the Griffins.

NEW-LOOK HUSKIES DEBUT

Much has changed since the Huskies last took the court in the NCAA Tournament as the PSAC Champions last March. Of that team’s starting five, four players graduated following the end of the season while the Huskies will need to replace five of its top six scorers from a year ago. The lone remaining starter from last year’s team is senior guard Catherine Noack. The Huskies were led in scoring a year ago by a player who has since graduated in 25 of 30 games – Noack led the squad in scoring in the other five contests. Of the 6,050 minutes turned in by BU players last year, 3,385 were played by the six players who graduated off last year’s roster.

As the Huskies turn the page this season with a new group of starring players, last year’s senior class will not soon be forgotten. The unit of Dana Wieller, Kayla Oxenrider, Lauren Ellis, Alyssa Flanagan and Danielle Derr helped usher in a new era of BU women’s basketball, bringing the program back to the top of the PSAC East. That group of players led Bloomsburg to a 72-18 record the past three years including two NCAA Tournament appearances and last year’s conference title. In all, last year’s seniors posted a record of 88-29 with three PSAC East titles during their four years in maroon and gold. Three of last year’s seniors are among the school’s top 25 in scoring - Wieller (second), Oxenrider (eighth) and Ellis (25th) while Flanagan ranks second all-time in assists.

AT THE POLLS

Bloomsburg received votes in the WBCA USA Today Sports Division II Preseason Coaches’ Top 25, garnering 22 votes in the poll. The Huskies were nationally-ranked for much of last season. Gannon is the only PSAC team ranked in the Top 25 (No. 2), but BU, California (PA), Edinboro and IUP all received votes.

HUSKIES’ CUPBOARD NOT BARE

Though much has changed since last season, many of the returning faces are familiar. Eleven players return from last year’s roster – five sophomores, four juniors and two seniors. Those players, nearly all of whom served as reserves last year, will be called upon in much larger roles this season.

CLEARY NEARS MILESTONE

Bloomsburg head coach Bill Cleary begins his sixth season at the helm of the Huskies and as he begins the new year he is at the doorstep of a career milestone. Cleary enters the year just one win away from his 100th with the Huskies, owning a 99-45 record at BU. In all, Cleary owns a 155-130 career coaching record. He will become the third coach in Bloomsburg women’s basketball history to win 100 games with the Huskies – Joe Bressi went 175-47 between 1986-94 and Monica Starrett compiled a 137-65 mark between 1997-2004.

HUSKIES PICKED SECOND IN PSAC EAST POLL

The Huskies were picked to finish second in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Millersville landed the top spot in the poll while Shippensburg was third, West Chester fourth and Kutztown fifth. East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Cheyney rounded out the poll. Though second, the Huskies claimed the most first-place votes in the poll – three – ahead of Millersville, Shippensburg and Kutztown which all took two first-place votes apiece in a voting reflective of the potential wide open nature of the East Division this season.

NOACK PICKED TO PRESEASON ALL-EAST TEAM Senior guard Catherine Noack received recognition from the coaches of the PSAC East by earning a selection to the preseason All-PSAC East Team. Noack, the lone returning starter from last year’s team, averaged 10.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists as a junior last year. After scoring in double figures just once in the first nine games last year, she then tallied double figure scoring in 15 of her last 21 games. Noack also ranks sixth in school history with 153 3-pointers.

JUST FOR STARTERS

The Huskies are 5-0 in season openers under head coach Bill Cleary. Included in that total are two victories on the road to begin seasons - at Chestnut Hill in 2009 (67-45) and at Seton Hill in 2011 (71-60).

BEST OF THE BEST

Over the past three seasons, the Huskies have posted a 72-18 (.800) record, a mark that ranks in the top 15 nationally in Division II and is the second-most victories by any PSAC team during the span. Only Edinboro has won more games from the PSAC since the start of 2010 (78). Of the East Division teams, Millersville is the closest to Bloomsburg with 59 victories.

UP NEXT

Bloomsburg remains on the road for one more contest - traveling to Wilmington, Delaware for a game at Wilmington University on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. The Huskies then make their 201314 debut at Nelson Field House on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in a key early season PSAC East battle against Millersville at 5:30 p.m. in the divisional opener for both teams.
