Success for our local theatre group! WE ATTENDED the Pantomime Alliance of Leicestershire Awards Evening on 28th March and were delighted to receive nominations in NINE categories ... and to win in THREE of those! •
BEST SET DESIGN – IAN LAY & MARIE O’NEILL
•
BEST LIGHTING – DAVID WOODWARD
•
BEST SOUND - ANNE DOBROWOLSKA
•
BEST SINGING - THE CAST
•
BEST ANIMAL – RICHARD HITCHCOCK
•
BEST VILLAIN- SARAH SHREEVE
•
BEST PRINCIPAL GIRL – LAURA VESTY
•
BEST DIRECTOR/PRODUCER – MURIEL WALKER
•
UNSUNG HERO – IAN LAY & MARIE 0’NEILL
WINNER
WINNER
FLOATING CATEGORY – WINNER This is for some aspect of the pantomime which doesn’t fit into any category, but which the adjudicators feel is worthy of an award. If a company brings in an outside dancing school (as we do) then they do not qualify for the Best Choreography Award. However, the adjudicators decided to make an award to the Junior Chorus from the Linda Williams Academy of Performing Arts because they were “exceptionally talented”, were integrated into the Pantomime beautifully, and added much to the production. For a small group such as ours, this is a wonderful achievement ... but we are all aware that, for MTTG, it isn’t just about winning awards, but about trying to ensure that our audiences enjoy what we do! •

£1.4 Million Boost for Rural Businesses A NEW scheme aimed at boosting the rural economy across the North Warwickshire and Hinckley & Bosworth area will be launched this summer. It is the first time that the two boroughs have worked together in precisely this way, although it builds on a shared commitment to work together to benefit the local economy and improve services for local people. The exciting partnership has secured approximately £1.4 million pounds of European funding through the LEADER Programme, which is delivered by the Department of Environment, Left: Carol Musgrave, Citizens Advice Food and Rural Affairs Bureau and Vice Chair of the LAG (Defra) which is part funded with Richard Bailey, National Farmers by the European Agricultural Union and Chair of the LAG. Fund for Rural Development. The money will be allocated to businesses, groups or organisations that can demonstrate a benefit to the local rural economy. To be successful, applications must contribute to the creation of jobs or the development of businesses in the rural areas. A Local Action Group (LAG), consisting of local public, private and voluntary sector representatives, will have the job of assessing the applications and will decide whether the project will contribute to the overall aim of the programme. It is anticipated that there will be considerable interest in the programme from businesses and organisations from across North Warwickshire and Hinckley and Bosworth. The Chair of the LAG, Richard Bailey stated “We are clearly delighted to have been awarded the funding, and anticipate that it will make a real difference to the future of the rural economy”. Councillor Bill Crooks, Hinckley & Bosworth’s Executive Member responsible for Rural Affairs, said: “With so many cuts to rural services and the loss of shops and post offices in villages it’s good to see some positive news for the countryside in Hinckley and Bosworth and North Warwickshire. “This £1.4million to be given out in grants to enable and encourage rural businesses is much needed.” The Borough Councils and the LAG will now work together on developing the local programme. It is anticipated that a call for applications from local organisations and businesses will be made in June 2015. In the meantime, anyone who would like to know more about the programme or who would like to register their initial interest in applying for funding should contact Emma McKay, LEADER Development Officer at North Warwickshire Borough Council, on (01827) 719356 or via email at emmamckay@northwarks.gov.uk

Stanton Village Hall Update The Current Situation AS THE construction of our village hall enters its final phase, the Stantonunder-Bardon Village Hall Trust is carrying out all the necessary preparation work to ensure that the opening of the hall for use is as seamless and straightforward as possible. The Trustees are currently identifying essential requirements and equipment for the hall and preparing to obtain quotations to put before the Parish Council, who are sponsoring the scheme and who are the ultimate owners of the hall. We need to be in a position to order all this material as soon as the hall is formally handed over to us by the builders. Obviously, there are many other considerations which the Trust are investigating e.g. insurance and licensing requirements; in short, a great deal of work is being done ‘behind the scenes’ to enable us to open the hall for use in late spring/ early summer. Please keep in touch with us via this website or via our
Facebook account for regular updates on progress.
Business Sponsorship THE TRUST has contacted many local businesses to appeal for sponsorship and donations to provide additional funds to those provided by the Parish Council. To date, we have received a very generous donation of £500 from Midland Quarry Products at Bardon. We remain hopeful that other companies may also respond in a positive way. Application to the Parish & Communities Initiative Fund The Trust has applied to the Parish and Communities Initiative fund for a financial contribution towards
several essential items of capital equipment which are required to enable us to open the hall on time. The Trust will use its entitlement as a registered charity to enable it to apply for grants from public and private bodies whenever this is deemed appropriate in order to help maintain a high standard of equipment in the hall.
How You Can Help? We need YOU to tell us what you would like to see happen in the hall and whether you would be prepared to help us. We shall also need volunteers to assist at organised events in several capacities e.g. ushers, kitchen staff, cleaners etc.
Get ready for Star Wars Day STAR WARS Day is an unofficial secular holiday in May which celebrates the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. It is observed by fans of the movies. May 4th is considered a holiday by Star Wars fans to celebrate the franchise’s films series, books, and culture. The date was chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase “May the Force be with you”— ”May the fourth be with you”.
Please contact the Trust Secretary, Ian Briggs, at stantonvillagehall@ gmail.com, via the ‘contact us’ tab on our homepage, or telephone him on 01530 243631 to tell us about your ideas, group activities or events that you would like to arrange at our hall. We hope to be able to accept bookings in late spring this year.
Sorry I didn’t show up for our date but I wanted you to have a good time.

AT THE LAST meeting of the PPG we discussed the priorities for the group, in conjunction with the surgery, for the coming year. The three areas identified were: 1. reviewing the ease of access for patients wishing to use the services at the surgery, 2. promoting Health Education within the Practice area 3. reviewing the medical centre website www. markfieldmedicalcentre.org . The Surgery has already produced an updated list to help patients understand how to access appointments and there is ongoing discussion of this issue as part of the ‘Productive General Practice ‘ work being carried out at the surgery. We will keep you updated on this and continue to feed back any comments to the practice on your behalf. As part of our Health Education promotion work we are intending to hold information sessions around the practice area. If anyone has an event that we could attend, for example a school or community fair or fundraiser, please contact Rosie Woodland on 01530 244497 and she will be happy to discuss this further. We are preparing especially for PPG awareness week which runs from Monday June 1st to Friday June 5th and would like to hold some events both in Markfield and Thornton, Stanton and Newtown Linford. We are trying to work out where we would reach the widest number of people within these locations, so if you have any thoughts on this please contact Rosie on the number above. An exciting March for Markfield WI WI HAVE had a good deal to be excited about in March with the Bradgate Group meeting hosted by Markfield on 18th March, the Annual Council Meeting of our Federation on March 7th and some excitement amongst members at the announcement that there is to be a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate our Centenary year. We will also be looking forward to other events being held around the county to celebrate this special year. On March 7th three of us attended the ACM held at The Leicester Grammar School which was a new venue for this meeting. It proved to be an excellent venue, plenty of space to park and eat lunch both of which had been lacking at the previous venue, and much better seating enabling a good view of proceedings and speakers. The day went well with lots to look at in the way of WI news, products and projects and three very good speakers. The main speaker was Angela Rippon who completely came up to expectations. She talked about her entry into journalism via a newspaper in Plymouth, her home town, and then her experiences in television which were many and varied. She was very entertaining and amusing, looked fantastic and held our attention throughout her talk.
March 18th and our Group Meeting saw us with another excellent speaker, Jane Robinson, a social historian who has a particular interest in the lives of ordinary women. She has written a book entitled A Force to be Reckoned with, the history of the Women’s Institute. She spoke generally about this history and then focussed on the role of the WI during both World Wars, periods when our organisation did a considerable amount of work to support the war effort. This was followed by refreshments provided by members and cupcakes decorated to follow our WI Centenary theme. As you will see from the photograph refreshments were served by a team ready prepared in their WI aprons. Thanks go to all the team in the kitchen, not just those in the
photograph. At the meeting we drew the ballot for the member who will represent us at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, The lucky lady is Sue Gammon and we shall look forward to a talk from her telling us all about the day. Fingers crossed for fine weather on June 2nd! I do have a sad announcement to make however and that is that one of our members, Monica Carter, died earlier this month. Monica had been a loyal member of the WI for forty years and we had missed her at our meetings as due to ill health she had not been able to attend for quite a while. Our sympathies go to

Granville Road Park to become a ‘Centenary Field’
GRANVILLE ROAD PARK in Hinckley is to be designated as a ‘Centenary Field’ in memory of the millions of people who lost their lives in the First World War. The council recommended Granville Road Park to Fields in Trust, the organisation leading a nationwide initiative to secure recreational spaces in perpetuity in memory of those who were killed in the war. The aim of the initiative is to protect war memorial playing fields, parks and green spaces in memory of those who lost their lives during WWI. Granville Park was considered to be a particularly apt location for the designation because it provided a valuable recreational space to Hinckley residents through both world wars and was even home to a WWI tank throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The tank was eventually dismantled to provide scrap metal for the WW2 war effort. The Borough Council’s Executive Member responsible for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Bill Crooks said: “I am delighted that Granville Road Park is to be dedicated as a ‘Centenary Field’. We should be proud to remember all those who lost their lives in WWI especially those from Hinckley and Bosworth. This will be a permanent reminder to residents in years to come. We will remember them.”
Bagworth Historical Society BHS met for the first time this year and made some plans for the coming year. We are having outside speakers talking about ‘Ghosts and Legends of Leicestershire’ and ‘Murders in Leicestershire’. In addition we hope to have a talk about historical links to Christmas traditions. We are also planning to have an evening out where the history of fish and chips is discussed followed by a tasting of the delight. We have also decided to visit the Black Country Museum for a day out in the summer. These events can be open to non-members so please watch this space. There will be other meetings as well, throughout the year. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm at Bagworth Working Men’s Club. We are a friendly group who always give a warm welcome to visitors and new members. Please feel free to come and join us.
Unique Health for Teens website launched A ground-breaking new website ‘Health for Teens’ has been launched by school nurses from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT), coproduced by over 80 young people from Leicestershire’s secondary schools. The unique website is the first NHS website that has been created especially to support teens with their mental and physical health and wellbeing. It features interactive content, films, and quizzes - written by experts from across LPT services including school nursing, health improvement, smoking cessation, dietetics, and mental health. The website’s comprehensive content includes topics as wide ranging as exam stress to anger management, and from spots to alcohol. Visit www.healthforteens.co.uk. Health for Teens complements, and features, a web chat facility linking to our multi-award winning
school nurse messaging system ChatHealth - enabling young people to receive advice and support directly from a health professional. Margaret Clarke, Lead School Nurse for LPT, said: “Health for Teens introduces a new and different way for young people aged 11 -16 to learn about their
health. All the content has been written in consultation with young people, to provide engaging yet informative bite-sized content on topics that matter to them. Thank you to all the young people and schools involved, we couldn’t have produced something this fantastic without them and we hope that they will continue to inform us in
keeping it fresh and up to date with the information they want to know about their health and wellbeing. The website is primarily a health promotion website, covering subjects that promote a healthy body and mind. It is not about managing serious illnesses for which more specialist websites already exist but we’ve signposted you to them where that’s applicable. Your school nursing service is always there to support you to stay happy and healthy – find out more about how to contact them by visiting www.healthforteens.co.uk “ The website has been partfunded by Leicestershire County Council, to support the hosting of a secure Year 7 questionnaire (launching in June) to help us gather the thoughts and views of young people and their health so that school nurses can best support them in their transition to secondary school.

Millions saved in one month as switching energy supplier rockets MORE THAN £38 million was saved by 130,000 households switching energy supplier - in just one month of the ‘Power to Switch’ campaign. Compared with the same period the previous year, the figures, provided by Ofgem accredited price comparison sites, also show: • 193% increase in total savings • Average saving of £312 for dual fuel switches – an increase of nearly 60% • 80% increase in the number of households who switched The Department of Energy & Climate Change ‘Power to Switch’ campaign encouraged people to switch and save by visiting www. BeAnEnergyShopper.com – generating more than 350,000 visits. Wrapping up the campaign, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Ed Davey, said: “Our campaign has helped put millions of pounds back in people’s pockets – and thousands have benefitted. “A huge increase in switching in a four week period shows that people want better deals from energy providers – and our reforms to the market have driven competition and made that possible.” Energy and Climate Change Minister Amber Rudd said: “What a terrific response to our campaign – thousands are better off and taking advantage of more competitive deals on the market. “It’s not too late – even more people can still switch and save today.” The Government’s programme of energy market reform includes: • Halving switching times - it now takes only 17 days to switch energy supplier down from 5 weeks last year • Encouraging new suppliers on to the market – there are now 21 independent suppliers • Legislating to back Ofgem reforms that force energy companies to make energy bills clearer – and providing information for customers about how to switch • Electricity switching figures covering the campaign period will be published by Energy UK in April and May. For more information about how to switch energy supplier visit www. BeAnEnergyShopper.com or call the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234.

Local folk are so quick to support their community Borough Councillor Matthew Lay writes in the Herald SO I AM preparing to face another election, seeking to be your Borough Councillor for the sixth time. Depending on the outcome on May 7th this could be my last Herald article, so it got me thinking about what I wanted to say. It seems such a long time ago, it was 1995 when I started out on my journey as your elected representative. In that 20 years so much has happened personally, professionally and within our community that it can at times seem overwhelming. In particular I look back to the people who inspired me as a young man to want to serve, the people who encouraged me to put my name forward, the people who instilled in me my beliefs about doing my best, not forgetting who I was and a humility to be in a position to help. A good many of those people are sadly no longer with us and in truth I miss a good number of them. Odd moments still catch me when a vivid memory stirs and it’s as if I was cast back in time. Just recently I was doing a survey of Council tenants and as I went round calling on them I noticed just how many had changed over the years. In some of the houses, as I went to knock on the door I could picture the tenant who was no more, often having lived in the property longer than I myself have lived on this earth. They may no longer be here but in my memories they still flicker like an ember in a fire. In my time as your councillor, I have married and been blessed with two sons, both of whom make me incredibly proud and also reaffirm the continuity of life.
This continuity of life means that as we all get older and consider our own mortality we do so in the knowledge that behind is always a new generation ready to take the place of those who went before. In time this will happen to us all and though we may concern ourselves about what this may mean, I am sure that this has been the same throughout time. So what really matters to me in the end, is what we can do while we can do it. I am always reminded of an inspirational quote that still inspires today although written many years ago. I think it goes as follows; “I expect to pass through this world but once. If therefore there may be kindness I can show or any good thing I can do any fellow being let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again”. Over the years I have been privileged to see at first hand, the many good works that people have carried out in our community to support those who live around them. Sometimes this is not always noticed or considered but it happens. I have worked with so many people who have stepped up and tried to do something positive to make a difference. I look back at all the Parish Councillors and the clerks; the members of the many community groups that have been active in the past or still hopefully today, those who have helped run them or contributed to their success, those who support the community buildings we have around us as and of-course those who have argued for improvements to them. We also have those who have supported the needy and vulnerable amongst us often without reward and those who cater for the spiritual needs of us all. “I know how hard it is sometimes to achieve success within our community and then to sustain it.” short periods put something back. I know how hard it is sometimes to achieve success within our community and then to sustain it. As funding cuts bite ever deeper into the fabric of our community, it is likely that more will be asked of us. We have a recent example in the Markfield Library which has challenged us to respond or lose a vital service. Thankfully a good number of community focused individuals have come together to save the library from closure, much to their credit, but I have to consider what happens when we can’t find enough people to help support not just community endeavours but also possibly key services? The demands on everyone increase as the years pass and for some it is simply not possible to lend a hand even if wishing to do so. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that and Government realises that even active communities have limits. I have seen that one of my key roles over the years has been to give my support to all of you who are not just passing by, but stopping and making a difference no matter how big or small. This has sometimes been a simple word of advice and encouragement, establishing contacts between key people or importantly finding financial support to enable things to happen. I hope to be able to carry on doing this but must accept it is not in my gift and I will respect the
Matthew Lay judgement of my peers come what may. So let me sign off by saying what it was that I wanted too say when I started to write this article. In essence, I just wanted to say thankyou. Firstly a big thank-you to you all for giving me the opportunity to serve my community, a community I have spent most of my life living in and secondly a thank-you for doing your bit along the way, for making a difference and making me proud of the community in which I live and represent.

South Charnwood High School News World Guide Day
Voters urged to make sure they are registered to vote
AS A NATIONAL advertising campaign is launched to encourage voter registration ahead of the General Election, the Borough Council is encouraging local people to make sure they’re registered to vote.
WORLD GUIDE DAY was on Friday 13th February 2015 and those pupils wishing to attend school in their Guide uniform were allowed to do so. Our picture shows from left to right: Lucy Marlow, Megan Hewitt, Chloe Farrington and Holly Farrington

On May 7 voters will go to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament for the Bosworth Constituency. Elections for Borough and Parish Councillors are taking place also on the same day. The Electoral Commission has launched its national voter registration campaign to remind people to register by April 20. The television advert can be seen here. Steve Atkinson, Electoral Registration Officer for Hinckley and Bosworth said: “Time is now running short to make sure you can take part in the elections, so I am encouraging everyone in Hinckley and Bosworth to take action now if they haven’t registered to vote already. Our message is simple: you can’t vote, if you aren’t registered by 20 April. It’s easy to do and only takes a few minutes online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. If you’re not sure, please double check’. To register to vote visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote Residents can check whether they’re registered to vote by calling the council on 01455 238141. Recent research conducted by YouGov for the Electoral Commission found that: • 21% of people who rent privately think they’re automatically registered to vote if they pay council tax – they aren’t • 40% of those surveyed think it is not possible to register to vote online in England, Scotland and Wales - it is • 69% do not know that the deadline to register to vote, with 13% thinking it is already too late to register. • When given a choice of five options only 32% correctly identified the deadline as 20 April.

Concert for Charnwood Training Band on 9th May A SPRING CONCERT for the Charnwood Training Band will take place on Saturday 9th MAY 2015 at 7.00p.m. Tickets £4.00 including tea and cakes to be held in St Mary & All Saints Church, Stanton Under Bardon. Proceeds to the Band and the Church.
Both children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and were sorry when it finished. Thanks to all of the audience who volunteered, including the young mother who took part in the illusion activity, very scarey!. BFG’s next organised event is the Spring Prize Bingo on Monday 20th April at 7.30 pm. There are always good prizes to be won when these sessions take place. All of the money that we make is ploughed back into enhancing the life of the village. Most of the daffodils that you can see around the village have been paid for and planted by this group. The vast majority of the planters have also been paid for and maintained by BFG. We are close to having the winter flowers removed and replaced by summer plants. This involves a considerable expense and we can only do it because people support us at our events. You may or may not have noticed that the two Miners’ tubs, one on Main Street and one on the corner of Station Road and Park Lane have been repainted. They were due to be done but the job was hastened by the appearance of graffiti on one of them. A special thanks to Phil for repainting them. We would also like to say thank you to Ros who has performed the role of treasurer for the group over the past few years. Ros and her mother are sadly leaving the area. We wish them both well in the future. I bet you don’t know what is coming next! A prize to the person who said that we are looking for a volunteer to become treasurer to our group. If you think you could do this or if you wish to find out what is involved, please contact Rosemary on 01530 230347

Thanks for the ‘Memories’ THE NEXT charity dance at Bagworth Working Men’s Club is at 8 pm on Friday 8th May. This is the annual ‘Memories’ dance because the event is in memory of friends and club members who have supported the club over the years. This year, the small team of volunteers who run these events have chosen the charity ‘Guide Dogs’. Here is some information to persuade you, should you require it, what a worthwhile charity it is. Guide dogs use the following breeds for guide dogs: • 56 % Golden retriever crosses (with Labradors or German shepherds) • 28 % Labradors • 10 % Golden retrievers • 5 % German shepherds • 1 % Other breeds and crosses At any one time, they are responsible for more than 8,000 dogs: • 355 dogs are mums and dads who breed the next generation of guide dogs • 250 puppies are newborns • 1,400 dogs are in puppy walking • 650 dogs are in training • 4.841 dogs are working in partnership with a person who is blind or partially sighted • 792 dogs are enjoying their retirement The cost of a guide dog: In 2013, it cost around £47 million to run the guide dog service. The guide dog service receives no government funding and is entirely reliant on the support and generosity of the public. It costs Guide Dogs around £50,000 to support a guide dog from birth to retirement. Breeding a guide dog puppy £3,100. Puppy walking £5,100. Early training £14,500. Advanced training £11,200. Partnership training £3,300. Supporting a partnership £13,200 Guide Dogs continues to support their dogs during their time working as a guide This covers the cost of food, vets’ bills and ongoing training. Do come along on Friday 8th May to support this very worthwhile venture and have an enjoyable time in the process.

Markfield windmills MY ENQUIRY about the Markfield windmill in the last issue of The Herald was kindly answered by Di Lockley who sent the attached images and information. The Altar Stones Mill of 189a had been working for 2 days non-stop when a violent storm which was described as ‘a memorable gale’ on the afternoon of Sunday 24th March 1895 resulted in the mechanism being put permanently out of action. The miller was Miller Hincks. There is also a picture of the Knoll Windmill, situated behind St michael’s Church, dated 1792.

Appeal for help from Bradgate Drama Society
Dear Friends The Bradgate Drama Society has been treading the boards in Newtown Linford for some 60 years now and has delighted audiences young and old over the years. We are lucky enough to have great facilities including a great sound and lighting system and the facility to rehearse on stage which is always a bonus. We are also able to provide a bar on performance nights which add to the night out. Sadly even with all this in our favour we have reached a point whereby we are having to take a long hard look at how we are able to carry on. We have a diminishing membership and are finding it very hard to recruit new members, and none of us are getting any younger. Our audiences have also diminished over the last few years and from selling out over three nights we have had to reduce our performances to just two nights. All of this is having an effect on the type of productions we are able to produce. We have gone from having auditions to just seeing who is available and finding a play to fit. Without an injection of new members I feel that it won’t be long before we bring the final curtain down on the group. As Chairman of the society I do not wish to preside over the demise of the group, so if you are willing to join our group we would love to see you and don’t feel that you have be on the stage we need plenty of help behind the scenes as well. I realise that this may not be for everyone so if it’s not for you then why not lend your support by coming to see our productions. I am sure you would have a very enjoyable evening. Our next production is “Don’t Dress For Dinner “ by Marc Camoletti adapted by Robin Hawdon. The performance dates are April 23/24 and 25th. Tickets are available from Toby Manning on 01530 245298 or Lesley Baker on 01509 890771 or by email bradgatedrama@gmail.com If on reading this you think you may want join us then please contact myself via the email address above or if you don’t have email contact Toby or Lesley on the numbers above. With a little more help and support we can together keep this group going to entertain people for many more years to come. As the saying goes “use or lose it” !

Statement re payment for care homes LEICESTERSHIRE County Council can announce it has received a repayment of £1.624 million from Leicestershire County Care Ltd (LCCL), for the nine care homes that were transferred to the company in 2012 under a deferred payment agreement. LCCL made the payment after securing finance from its bank, HSBC, having demonstrated its performance in running the homes over the last two years. Before this payment was made, the council had received £1.625 million from LCCL, plus a further £386,000 in interest payments. Interest was charged at an average of the Bank of England rate, plus six per cent. A county council spokesman said: “While it has taken longer than we would have wished, we are pleased that we have now received the money owed to us by LCCL.”

New round of courses at Leicestershire Recovery College Leicestershire Recovery College has published its 7th prospectus for the Summer term 2015 after supporting nearly 750 people since its launch in May 2013. Up to seven students enrol each week at the college’s Glenfield Hospital base, where the free courses, workshops and seminars are available for people using adult mental health services, for their friends, loved ones and for staff at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. The college is inviting adult mental health service users to sign up for a new term of free courses aimed at boosting their recovery and resilience. This summer term the college is offering a total of 34 recoveryfocused course/ topics. The topics cover Assertiveness, Confidence and Motivation, Understanding a Diagnosis of Psychosis and Schizophrenia, and Managing Stress amongst just a few. Three new courses available in the May-September term are: • Work and volunteering advice
workshops, provided by Aspiro • Welfare rights and the benefits system, offered in partnership with Leicestershire Advice Service for Social Care • Advice on accessing social care and support and the implications of the Care Act 2914 for students and service users. Recovery College manager Emma Gartland said that it is not uncommon for students to report that since attending the college they feel more relaxed, more positive and more confident. “The Recovery College has now established its place as a real resource for people to help them make the most of their own attributes and support them in recognising their own resourcefulness and achieve the
things they want to. “Now we are exploring the possibility of expanding our courses into the community and we are looking at the possibility of holding classes and workshops at venues across Leicestershire and Rutland in the future. Recovery College manager Kate Hamill said: “The courses we offer, with support from a range of partner organisations, cover a wide range of topics from understanding specific mental health conditions to singing for wellbeing, developing relationships, introduction to creative writing, healthy eating and assertiveness and confidence.” Copies of the new prospectus are available to download from www. leicspart.nhs.uk. Print copies are available from the Recovery College (next to the Bennion Centre) on the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club News HELLO SPRING! Daffodils and primroses are beginning to appear and we have even heard the sound of a lawnmower in recent days. There are buds appearing on some of our shrubs and it probably won’t be long before we see splashes of green appearing on our hedgerows. However we mustn’t do too much too soon – we can often have late frosts to catch us unawares. Nevertheless it’s lovely to see signs of our garden waking up again. April is the month of our Annual General Meeting and the date when our new programme for the year is launched. We have three trips planned this time. In May we go to Barraca Garden near Earl Shilton; in July we go to Norwell Nurseries near Newark and in August we go to the RHS garden at Hyde Hall in Essex. We have some prestigious speakers arranged for the coming year, some local and some from further afield. We have two celebrity speakers planned during the next twelve months. Chris Beardshaw, the gold medal garden designer and television favourite is coming in October and in March 2016 we welcome Andy McIndoe who is the MD of Hilliers Nurseries. Looking even further ahead, our celebrity speaker in October 2016 will be Fergus Garrett, who is head gardener at Christopher Lloyd’s famous garden at Great Dixter and renowned as a great speaker. How to obtain tickets for these events will be announced in the coming months, for we expect them to be very popular. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Latest news from Newbold Verdon Jazz Club BABY JOOLS Jazzaholics gave us a night to remember in March when they played a programme of brilliant trad jazz music as only they can. They have a style of their own, playing exciting and invigorating fast numbers to slow blues numbers from the old days of jazz. Mike Owen manages to get such variety into his trombone playing, Karl Hird was very impressive on clarinet and saxophone and they were ably joined by Danny Illett on trumpet, Jim Swinerton on bass, and guest Jim Douglas on banjo and occasionally guitar. Completing the line up was band leader, Baby Jools who was his usual brilliant self on drums.
If I’ve learned anything from soap commercials, it’s that only attractive people take showers.

Bagworth Community Centre Trust THE TRUST is happily continuing to run the Community Centre in Bagworth. It feels that a great deal has been achieved but there is even more to do this year. The usual activities continue to take place, though there is a bit of a lull in some of these during the school Easter holidays. The Centre was recently put to good use by groups linked with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. One of these was the Science and Mining workshops which took place during the last half term holidays. There was also a conference held in the Centre regarding play in the community. Both were well attended and were enjoyed by those who took part. In such circumstances, positive comments about the Centre continue to be heard. Clearly the Lottery was generous in giving the money that has been spent on the building and it is admired by many. The building continues to be used on a regular basis for children’s parties. It has also been used for Christening and Naming ceremonies and also for a Wake.
Yoga sessions for mums-to-be A new group is beginning after Easter. Jen, who runs the Yoga class is introducing Yoga sessions for those who are pregnant or who work with women who are pregnant. These will begin on April 15th from 6.00 to 7.30 pm in the Rear Hall. Jen’s contact details are: email namasteyoga.uk@ gmail.com Tel - 07467 946368 if you would like further details. Also starting in April, on Saturday 11 April from 9 am to 2.30 pm is the bread making course. This consists of about six daily sessions over different weekends. This is going to be run by Angela and her contact details are: angela@conibearskitchen.co.uk. Tel. 07917 357134 The next Trust Prize Bingo session is on Monday 13th April at 7.45 pm. These are enjoyed by the people who attend, especially the people who win. As ever the Trust would appreciate anyone who has good ideas for activities at the Centre or who is prepared to help with running the Centre to get in touch.

Walk your support for Canine Partners at the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk Meet at: Martinshaw Woods, Markfield Road, Ratby, Leics, LE6 0LS on April 26th at 11am If you love strolling through spring flowers and would like to raise money for assistance dog charity Canine Partners, then the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk in Ratby on Sunday 26 April at 11am is for you. Kathleen Hodkinson, organiser of the three mile walk and a volunteer puppy parent for the Charity, said: “I see first-hand the valuable assistance the canine partners give to people with various disabilities, and I am impressed with the skills the dogs learn through the training process. “Organising a walk seemed a fun way of raising much needed funds for Canine Partners! “At the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk there will be an opportunity to stroll through The Woodlands Trust site, take part in a raffle, a quiz and buy some goodies from our merchandise stand on the day.” Canine Partners provides specially trained assistance dogs to help people with disabilities such as opening and closing doors, undressing, pressing buttons, retrieving items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATMs and other everyday tasks that disabled people find difficult, painful or impossible to do for themselves. Canine Partners CEO Andy Cook, added: “The Big Bluebell Walk is a family fun event and we would like as many people as possible to join us on our spring scenic walk - and you are more than welcome to bring your dog along too. “We do not receive any government funding and rely solely on donations so the money you raise will help create more canine partnerships, transforming the lives of disabled people. “This year is a particularly special one for us at Canine Partners as we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, so come along and walk your support for the Charity.” The fundraising event is part of the Charity’s national Big Bluebell Dog Walk Campaign, which has raised more than £150,000 in the past 11 years. All funds raised from this walk will help the Charity to train more assistance dogs and transform the lives of people with disabilities, including wounded servicemen and women in conjunction with Help for Heroes. To register or find out more information please visit caninepartners.org.uk/ bigbluebellwalks, call 01730 716013 or email hollyb@caninepartners.org.uk.

Why Not Lift Your Spirits With A Visit To An Alternative Health Farm? A MYSTERIOUS miasma surrounds Monument House. Could it be the stench of the marsh which surrounds the House, or something oppressive, malignant and dangerous which emanates from the laboratory of the late Lucian Tomb? If you seek to sojourn in this House – the family seat of the Tomb family since 1781 and now an Alternative Health Farm- then you must alight from the train at Hag’s Hollow and venture into the fog be-shrouded Norfolk lanes. There will be no-one to direct you to Monument House and, possibly, no welcome when you arrive. There is a distinct feeling of corruption about the House. The remaining members of the Tomb family are reticent and suspicious- some might describe them as vengeful and alarmingly maniacal - each preoccupied with thoughts of “disposals”. During your stay, albeit a brief one, you will feel the presence of the House’s history –some of it very dark indeed. You will need to be constantly on your guard! There is no need to make any arrangement to leave. However, you are most warmly invited to join us at MTTG’s Spring Production! “PREPARE TO MEET THY TOMB”, A COMEDY THRILLER BY NORMAN ROBBINS, WILL BE STAGED AT THORNTON COMMUNITY CENTRE FROM WEDNESDAY 22ND TO SATURDAY 25TH APRIL AT 7.30p.m. NIGHTLY. Tickets, (£5 & £4 (Concessions)), are available at NORM’S (Thornton’s Shop on the corner of Church Lane), on 01530 243 865 or via our MTTG Theatre Group Facebook Page.
The Brian Humpherson Quintet THORNTON Community Centre will be welcoming back The Brian Humpherson Quintet on Saturday 16th May 2015 7.30pm start. This return visit is in response to several requests from previous audience members. The quintet is made up of Brian Humpherson (piano), Don Blakeson (trumpet), Mike Read (saxophone), Dougie Wright (drums) and Martin Slipp (double bass). The Guest Vocalist will be Nicole van der Kuinder. Tickets - priced at £7.00 - will be available nearer the date. For early booking, contact Iris Gleeson on 01530 230453.

News from Cross Hills Baptist Church Serving the villages of Thornton & Bagworth plus the surrounding area
Easter Service, 5th April ON EASTER Sunday, a very special day for us when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, we have our Family Celebration Service at 10.30am. Our Cross Hills puppets and the Sunday Club will be taking part in the service, which will be all about “Hope and Love”. Please come along to join us as we celebrate this special time of year.
Being “Good Neighbours” OUR NEXT Bible Study homegroup is on Wednesday 22nd April. So far, we have looked at the ‘Parable of the Good Samaritan’ in Luke 10 v25 – 37 in February and ‘The Woman at the Well’ in John 4 v1 – 30 in March and this month we will be looking at ‘Paul in Athens’ based on Acts 17 v16 – 34. Our discussions and debate centre around our Christian faith in the multi-cultural society in which we now live and how we can be ‘good neighbours’ and promote peace and harmony in a world that holds so much conflict.
Dates for your Diary THIS YEAR’S Awesome Holiday Club, for children up to age 11, will be on the mornings of Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th August. Please keep the dates free and we look forward to seeing the children for fun, games, bible stories, crafts and lots more.

Cricket at Altar Stones NEWTOWN Linford Cricket Club has teamed up with the Jubilee Playing Fields Committee and Markfield Parish Council to offer third team cricket to its members at Altar Stones Lane. Beware of fishy doorstep sellers DON’T BE reeled in by cold-calling doorstep sellers offering fresh fish. That’s the message from trading standards, following complaints from residents who’ve been duped by doorstep sellers. Leicestershire County Council officers have received several calls in recent weeks from people who’ve been duped into buying quantities of fresh fish at what seemed like reasonable prices. However, once the trader left they discovered they’d not received what they thought they were buying. David Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “Residents have told us there are fish sellers travelling around Leicestershire knocking on doors and offering consumers ‘fresh’ fish. “We’re concerned as residents have been overcharged, have not received the correct species of fish and, in some cases, the fish is anything but fresh. All of this is illegal. “We are appealing for anyone who has experienced this, or is aware of this happening, to contact us so we can take enforcement action.” The sellers have been offering cod and salmon at attractive prices. They fetch it from their van, boxed up, and, in some cases put it straight into the customer’s fridge or freezer. When they customer opens it later, they are disappointed to find a much smaller quantity of fish than ordered, or an inferior product. If you are approached by anyone selling fish in this way, make Trading Standards aware by calling the Citizens Advice Consumer Advice Service on 03454 04 05 06 or by emailing: telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk

stephbc@hotmail.co.uk 01530 243606 / 07572 852684 The churches of Markfield, Thornton, Bagworth, Stanton-under-Bardon and Copt Oak in partnership with Christians Against Poverty are once again offering a FREE short course (3 weeks, 1 evening per week) aimed at putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure. CAP Money coach, Steph Beeston-Clarke who leads the sessions, said: “Delegates who have already attended the course are finding themselves feeling more 'empowered' 'in control' 'confident' and 'optimistic' in handling their finances. Lots of people are keen to manage their money, but often don’t have the basic skills, so this course is a really effective place to start. We hope that we can help people, quietly and confidentially, take control of their money rather than relying on guess work so they can plan for the future and weather the storm." The course is run across the country through local churches, which have been trained by CAP. It is designed for anyone whether unemployed, receiving benefits, working, self-employed, retired, newly married or recently divorced. The CAP Money course isn’t for people with debts (though they can be catered for). It’s for everyone – students to the newly retired, single people and for families because we’ve seen that learning how to set a budget and stick to it helps to debt-proof people in the long term. Whether they struggle to make ends meet or are comfortable financially, it will give people a new found freedom in their finances. The course is offered free of charge to everyone regardless of age, gender, faith or background. https://capuk.org/i-want-help/cap-money-course/course The next course starts in Markfield on Tuesday 28 April 2015 at 7pm. 28 Book of poems by a Markfield poet
“Poems from a Room Beyond Awareness” ... is a book of poems by Markfield poet Darren Howes Darren says: “These poems represent a journey from darkness into light, a spiritual path into Buddhism. “They were gifted to me, appearing in my head fully formed during meditation, and I just wrote them down. “Poems from a Room Beyond Awareness is part of my journey, but I hope this book will help you in yours.
NEWS FROM THORNTON WI
Bumper turnout for John Smith’s talk THANK YOU to those visitors who swelled our numbers at our March meeting, and a huge thank you to speaker John Smith, of Thornton Nurseries, who regaled us with tales and interesting anecdotes about his Thornton boyhood.
We each see things from our own perspective and through our own eyes so that even those of us who, like John, have lived in the village since childhood, learned new things about our small part of Leicestershire and of its mining and farming history. This was “living history” at its best. It was a memorable meeting.
RURAL businesses have welcomed the Government’s confirmation that subsidies will be made available to install broadband in the hardestto-reach rural communities and businesses.
LFE Film Evenings Next meeting: Long Clawson Cheese
LFE Film Evenings will be showing on Thursday 7 May 2015 “My Old Lady”. A down-on-his-luck New Yorker inherits a Parisian apartment from his estranged father, so travels to France to sell the vast domicile. However, he’s shocked to discover an old lady living there together with her protective daughter. This refined but feisty Englishwoman, Mathilde Girard (played by Maggie Smith) is a livein tenant who is not prepared to budge. Cast includes Maggie Smith, Kristin-Scott Thomas, and Kevin Klein. Venue: the Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE. Cost: £5. Doors open at 7.00pm when a complimentary hot drink and biscuits will be available. The film show starts at 7.30pm.
CLA-proposed subsidy confirmed by government to help provide rural broadband
Now we look forward to our next meeting on THURSDAY 9th APRIL AT 7.30 p.m. AT THORNTON COMMUNITY CENTRE when Janice Breedon comes to speak to us about LONG CLAWSON CHEESE. Although the Dairy produces a range of cheeses, the words “LONG CLAWSON” and “STILTON” are almost synonymous. The Long Clawson Dairy story began in 1911. Farmer Thomas Hoe Stevenson, was running Mount Pleasant Farm near Melton Mowbray, alongside his two sisters who produced Stilton cheese in a room adjoining the main farmhouse. In order to ensure this special cheese would continue to be produced for generations to come, Thomas Hoe canvassed the opinion of local farmers for the development of a dairy. He soon had eleven partners, and the group purchased an old empty pub – The Royal Oak – in the village of Long Clawson. Long Clawson Dairy’s head office resides there to this day and has remained a farming co-operative since its formation, helping to support local farms for over 100 years. Today, 43 farms in the Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas supply the Dairy with 58 million litres of milk every year – hopefully ensuring future prosperity for years to come. In October 2014, at the Global Cheese Awards, more than 70 judges undertook the task of tasting thousands of cheeses from around the world. The Long Clawson Dairy scooped another Supreme Champion Accolade for their Blue Stilton, which won the Global Supreme Champion Trophy. This speaker comes highly recommended and we expect to hear about the cheese-making process as well as about the various cheeses made at Long Clawson. There will be tasting samples and samples to buy. This promises to be another interesting and informative evening, and we warmly invite visitors to join us. The visitor’s fee is £3, which includes refreshments. The member’s competition is: A RECIPE INCLUDING CHEESE.

Field Head speed camera caught over 2,000 speeding motorists THE MOBILE speed camera unit on the A50 at Field Head, near Markfield, was the secondbusiest in the county last year. The camera, a mobile unit which can be moved to different locations, caught 2,324 speeding motorists on the road. The speed limit there was reduced from 50mph to 40mph last year. The busiest speed camera was at the M1 Catthorpe interchange, where the motorway roadworks are taking place. Over 12,000 speedsters were caught by the camera, including one travelling at 119 mph!
The CLA, which represents landowners, farmers and rural businesses, said the Government’s response to the EFRA Select Committee report into broadband and digital-only services confirms its calls for providing a satellite subsidy scheme to help rollout rural broadband in the hardest-to-reach areas. CLA President Henry Robinson said: “In our evidence to the Select Committee I highlighted that it is fundamental to achieve a connected countryside for rural businesses and communities to thrive. “The Government’s response to the Committee’s report is a major step forward for the CLA rural broadband campaign. We are delighted to hear that the Government intends to subsidise the cost of installing superfast broadband solutions in hard-toreach areas and has confirmed a delivery plan. “We called for a voucher scheme to install satellite and other technologies in hard-to-reach areas. It is the quickest, fairest and most cost-effective solution to offer those living and working in the countryside a grant to buy better broadband.” The Government also confirmed it will consult on whether the current Universal Service Obligation (USO) on dial-up should be extended to broadband and raised to a faster speed in the next Parliament. Mr Robinson said: “A minimum speed of two Megabits per second (Mbps) is now too slow for modern requirements. We have called for a USO on broadband to ensure a legal guarantee of sufficient speeds and we encourage the next Government to bring forward this consultation as a priority to ensure the rural economy does not get left behind.”

Daisy the bulldog needs a home - can you help? Meet Daisy, a tan/cream Old Time (traditional) Bulldog. Daisy is 5 years old and has been spayed. She is a very sweet dog, who just loves to be with people and to please them, but she is very bouncy and loving in character and this can put some people off. She is very clever and loves to be included in what you are doing (and where you are going!). So she will need a home where people have plenty of time to take her out for long walks to burn off some of her excess energy. Daisy also needs some basic training to make her walk better on the lead and to perfect her manners. But she is already making good progress and is popular with visitors. Daisy found herself at the sanctuary when her family found that they no longer had the right amount of time to spend with her due to full-time work commitments. It was sadly with regret that they made the hard decision to re-home her. If you would like to come and meet Daisy with a view to possibly rehoming her, and if you already have a dog of your own, dog introductions will be essential as she was always the only dog in her previous family. Also, Daisy doesn’t get on with cats so a home without them would be advisable. If you can offer Daisy a second chance of happiness, please come and meet her, she would really enjoy going out for a walk with you! Call us on: 01530 243 925 or email: redgate@mail.org Or visit – we are open EVERY DAY (except Christmas Day), from 10.00am – 4.00pm. We are based near Stanton-under-Bardon on Shaw Lane (beside the A511)

We meet at the Forest Hill Golf Club Botcheston once a month on a Wednesday for a three course meal after which we are entertained by a speaker. In recent months we have enjoyed talks about Living in China, Chocolate (demonstration and tasting!) and The Joy of Painting, when an amazing painting was created before our very eyes and, at Christmas, Eliza McClelland entertained us royally with stories and thoughts about the Festive Season. Talks coming up are entitled: Oprah Winfrey touched my elbow, Life and times of Coco Chanel, Amusing Poems, Autumn Garden and Myth of Belly Dancing amongst others. There is a friendly atmosphere, the venue is pleasant and the food is good. Why not give us a try? The three course meal with coffee is £16. If you decide you would like to join our club membership is £20 per year; this pays for the speakers. For more details or to book a meal phone 0116 2304420. If you have read a similar article before and not come along to try us why not do it this time?
