Three elections on the same day CHARNWOOD Borough Council is running three elections on the same day on Thursday, May 5. The Borough Council elections will be an “all out” election with all 52 Borough Councillors up for election. On the same day, there is also the national referendum on the Alternative Vote System and, in some rural areas, Parish Council Elections. The election count for the Borough Council Elections, AV Referendum and Parish Council Elections starts at 9.30am on Friday, May 6. The Count is taking place at Loughborough Leisure Centre and the Borough and Parish results are expected by 1.30pm. The AV Referendum Count is in two parts commencing at 9.30am and 4pm and the results are being co-ordinated regionally. David Dalby, the Deputy Returning Officer for the election, said: “With so much going on, it’s going to be a really busy day and we are hoping for a good turnout.” Charnwood Borough Council, which is organising the election and the count, is again using machines to count the ballot papers and speed up the process – one of only a few councils in the country that does this. All electors are encouraged to vote in the forthcoming elections. Local youngsters demonstrate their firefighting skills Every Saturday in March, a group of eleven young people from the local area took part in a FireSkills course run by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and funded by Charnwood Community Safety Partnership.

The course consisted primarily of basic firefighting drills, such as hose running, which aim to help young people work co-operatively with each other and understand how their actions affect other people. The course is designed to enhance participants’ self esteem and confidence through improving their communication and performance skills in a team focused environment. The presentation was the culmination of the group’s work and their chance to demonstrate the skills that they learnt over the course . Those invited to the presentation included the parents and families of all young people involved, representatives from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, representatives from Limehurst and Shepshed High schools who have referred the majority of participants, the Town Councillor for Shepshed and the County Councillor for Shepshed West. Helene Sutliff, Youth Education Manager said: “This year we are running several FireSkills courses across Leicestershire but this is the first one ever when participants have chosen to come along in their own spare time. We feel that the course run with Charnwood Community Safety Partnership has been particularly successful and the students have shown real commitment. Not one member of the group missed a session; they worked very hard over the four weeks and learnt lots of new skills.”

New supermarket granted planning permission Plans to build a new supermarket in Shepshed have been approved. The proposed store - in Charnwood Road - is set to be opened over the next year. At the recent planning meeting, councillors agreed to grant permission subject to the condition that a pedestrian crossing is constructed close to the supermarket.

Officers from Charnwood Borough Council attended Shepshed market on Friday 1st April to promote responsible dog ownership. The road show was organised with Shepshed Town Council in order to raise awareness about the issue of dog fouling. The road show took place from 9am-1pm during which time numerous residents were spoken to and advice, information and dog bags were handed out. The residents also gave information about places where dog fouling was a particular problem in Shepshed so targeted patrols can now take place. One of Charnwood’s Street Wardens was in attendance as well as the dog warden. Overall the road show was a great success and hopefully it will have an impact on irresponsible dog owners in the future.

Unsatisfactory refurbishment work delays toilet opening

Through no fault of Shepshed Town Council, the Hallcroft Toilets have had to remain closed due to unsatisfactory refurbishment works. The Town Council was not prepared to accept substandard remedial work. Certain works that had been requested have not been carried out. Following a site meeting with Charnwood Borough Council on Wednesday 13th April many issues were highlighted as not acceptable. Charnwood Borough Council had agreed to get the contractors back in to carry out remedial works and additional works which had been previously missed. Painting of the toilets should be carried out following the remedial works and then an industrial clean. Apologies to the people of Shepshed for being inconvenienced, however, the Town Council hopes to have the Hallcroft Toilets refurbished to a standard that the residents of the Town deserve.

There are 40 families across the North West Leicestershire region that enjoy helping young people to achieve. We have been fostering in Shepshed for eleven years now, we had our own children who have grown up and left home, but we have had ten children in our care over that time and have found it to be the most rewarding thing we have ever done. We have helped children who came in to the care system for all kinds of reasons and with all kinds of difficulties, it has been very challenging at times but extremely rewarding to see them achieve and move forward with their lives. We have found it a joy and a pleasure to share our caring and loving home with young people from all backgrounds and with varying characters and personalities, there is never a dull moment! It is an amazing, worthwhile and interesting job that benefits a child and enriches your home. Look out for the national advertising and please consider sharing your home with a child.

More information about the incinerator, plus speech on Child Support Agency reforms I would like to firstly mention the latest developments around the issue of the siting of an incinerator in Shepshed. I received a large amount of correspondence from constituents who wanted to understand why the Environment Agency was consulting again, or who were concerned with the short timeframe they had been given to put their views forward. As I explained in my last article, the Environment Agency permitting process is separate from the application by Biffa for planning permission. Both I and Shepshed’s County Councillor, Christine Radford, immediately wrote to the Environment Agency to request this time-frame for consultation be extended. I also organised a meeting at the Town Council Offices between Environment Agency representatives and councillors from all parties and local campaigners so we could put our views on the time allowed for the consultation and the whole issue to them directly. I am sorry to say that the Environment Agency refused to extend the end date for their consultation, a decision I

I will endeavour to keep everyone abreast of any developments in this regard. As some of you may know, Biffa have now submitted a new application for planning permission to Leicestershire County Council as well as a separate appeal against the refusal given to them last year. I will also endeavour to keep residents informed of the consultation that takes place on that so that you have a chance to have your say. On a different note, I delivered a speech in the House of Commons on Tuesday 5 April, on the Child Support Agency and proposed reforms to the child maintenance system. In my speech I mentioned three particular cases that I have dealt with, where immense troubles had been experienced with the CSA. I wanted to voice the concerns of many parents locally, and argued for enhanced clarity within the CSA, and a need for improved enforcement measures for long-

Banging the drum for local talent

Local drum teacher David Cockayne of Accent Drum Tuition held a drum event at the Glenmore Community Centre in March with pupils showing their drumming skills to their families. Congratulations go to students passing drum kit examinations,they include Alex Curle and Mathew Shuttleworth who both passed a Performance Grade One with a Merit, Liam George who passed Grade One with a Merit and Chris Tomkinson who passed Grades Four and Five. The event also raised £50 for Comic Relief through a raffle drawn on the day.

The study, by Natural England and the University of East Anglia, will form the most in-depth cost-benefit study of any fitness drive that has taken place in the UK. It will examine the costs associated with Walking for Health schemes and the long-term health benefits of walking. The pilot study will be used to shape a final version of a nationwide survey of walking programmes. The results will provide valuable evidence into the costs of running Walking for Health programmes that will be shared with the Department of Health and NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) among others. Nita Pearson, Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Lifestyle officer, said: “We feel honoured to have been chosen as one of only two areas to take part in this study. Chorus Theatre has managed and facilitated the D.Arts Young People’s Drama group for 10-13 year olds in the area since 2007 and now the company is creating a new group for younger children. The drama project will be led by a professional theatre director and will cover basic acting skills, improvisation and building the confidence of the children. The workshops will lead to a short performance at the end of the project for family and friends. The workshops will take place on Tuesdays after school in the Village Hall in Diseworth. The project is open to any children in the area aged between 7 and 9 years old and no experience is necessary. Maths games morning at Newcroft On Wednesday 13th April there was an amazing turn out for the maths games morning held to give parents and carers the chance to experience all the fun games the children play in their maths lessons. The learning of maths is really important to give children the skills they need to help them succeed in life, and so the school day at Newcroft gives them lots of opportunities to practise their skills and allow them to become confident and independent learners and problem solvers. The parents and carers stayed from the beginning of the day until break, The Newcroft Pontoon Team working out whether to stick or twist and played lots of different games with the children (including board games, cards, counting, computer games and dominoes) and they even stayed for tea and biscuits at the end in the well equipped kitchen.

Shepshed History Society News Shepshed History Society meets every second Tuesday in the month at Glenmore centre, Thorpe Rd 7-30pm to 930pm and newcomers are always very welcome.

Picnic In The Park will be held on Monday 30th May (Bank Holiday Monday) on Queens Park, Granby Street, Loughborough. On Tuesday 13th April the Shepshed History Society were given an excellent talk on the finding of Garendon Abbey by the well known Brian Williams. It is a little known fact that lying between Shepshed and Loughborough was at one time a very impressive Cistercian Abbey dating as far back as the 11th century. The origins of the religion having first begun in France. Mr. Williams went into great detail of how the monks came to build the building, how they lived and showed us a very impressive sketch of how the Abbey would have looked like. He then went onto explain how the Archeological Society later explored the site and uncovered remains of the chapter house which are still there today, and he showed us tiles that had been recovered. Made of clay, they had survived for a very impressive 800 years. Garendon Hall of course was later built on the site of this once famous Abbey and which is sadly no more either. The next meeting will be held on the 10th May the subject being ‘Leicestershire’s Naughty People’ given by Mr. Robert Gregory.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service on 15th May Shepshed & District Funeral service are holding a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Sunday 15th May 2011 at 6pm at St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed. It is a service that will celebrate the lives of lost loved ones in reflection, readings and music with an opportunity to light a candle of remembrance. Refreshments will be held after the service and everyone is warmly invited to join us for this special service.

Rotarians help to keep Dolphins afloat! Some of the money collected by Shepshed Charnwood Rotarians with their Santa Float at Christmas has been donated to the Shepshed Dolphins swimming group, and at a recent weekly meeting of the Rotary Club, Penny Hefferan, Dolphins administrator, and her guide dog Clova, were present to receive a cheque for £100 from Rotary President Roger Hutchinson. Penny explained that the Dolphins were started 30 years ago with the aim of providing a safe environment for people with a disability to go swimming and to bring along family and friends. The group meets on Saturday morning 10.30 – 12.30 at Hind Leys School. Members have a wide range of disabilities including injuries, illnesses or age related problems and there is a qualified physiotherapist on hand to give advice. Volunteers are a very important part of the operation and there are well trained lifeguards present all the time with an awareness of the difficulties the swimmers may have. Penny mentioned that the Dolphins are having a Day of Sport on June 12th and they are looking for volunteers to help. More details can be found on their website www. shepsheddolphins.org.uk. The picture shows Penny, with Clova in the foreground, receiving the cheque from Rotary President Roger Hutchinson. The Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at the Whitehouse Hotel in Kegworth at 7.30 for 8.00pm. Anyone is welcome to come along to find out more about Rotary activities.

Who in their right mind would spend SEVERAL DAYS watching a sporting contest - with no guarantee that there will be a winner at the end? The rules are barmy too. Why is it that they never make a start until almost lunchtime, and yet they have to finish early some days because of bad light? Why don’t they buy an alarm clock and get themselves on the field for about half-past nine? And why do they need two umpires on the pitch and another in the pavilion watching tv? Is this cricket’s way of creating jobs for ex-players? Having said all that, what really gets on my nerves is the way the crowd applauds when various scores are reached. You can be peacefully watching the Test Match when suddenly the spectators burst into spontaneous applause - for no apparent reason. You excitedly glance around the pitch, looking for Erica Roe, but No - they’re clapping because the hundred’s come up! It doesn’t matter whether the batting side has lost one wicket or nine wickets, if the hundred comes up on the scoreboard, the crowd just cannot help themselves - they have to clap. In its own little world, with its own loyal band of followers, cricket would be a harmless pastime. But the worrying aspect to the game is that quite a few senior members of our government have been known to be cricket fans. Is it wise to put the nuclear deterrent under the control of someone who applauds numbers? Ban cricket - before it’s too late! Is Fred on the ball about cricket, or should he have his bails whipped off? Is he making a silly point, or is cricket really a threat to civilisation as we know it? Shepshed WI News At the April meeting of Shepshed WI President Lynne Diaper was pleased to welcome two new members and one new visitor. Plans were made for an informal visit to Snibston to see the ‘Paper Memories’ exhibition in the Fashion Gallery. Audrey Chambers gave a brief report on the Annual Council Meeting in Leicester in March and a special mention was made of the problems that could arise due to the plans for the abolition of cheques.

Following the business Lynne welcomed Betty Harlow who talked about her hobby of egg decorating using mainly goose eggs, but also tiny pigeon eggs. She started many years ago when it was often a case of working things out for yourself and she told members how you could not obtain the specialised high speed drills needed but her friendly dentist offered her the use of his surgery on his day off when she could use his dental equipment, something which you couldn’t get away with today. Members were able to look at several examples of her past work as Betty has moved on and no longer decorates eggs. These included some remarkable ones with miniature scenes inside and ones that had moving parts. Janet Hamilton Smith thanked Betty for a really interesting talk and then members were able to buy from an Easter Sales Table. At the May meeting members will be discussing the resolutions, namely Mega Farms and Public Libraries, which will be on the agenda of the annual national meeting in June.

nXt Factor success for Rachael Hutton Rachael Hutton is celebrating after winning the nXt Factor Finals at The Crown in Shepshed on Tuesday April 12th 2011. The ten finalists battled out to win the converted crown of nXt Factor Champion 2011 with them all having to sing 2 songs - one a song of their own choice and the second a themed song written or performed by Elton John or Glee Cast. Garden competition for green-fingered tenants Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing (CNH) is inviting its tenants to get growing and enter its third annual garden competition. This year, following your feedback, there are two new categories – best Young Gardener and best Vegetable Garden. Local MP Nicky Morgan visits Shepshed Toy Library Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan visited the Shepshed Toy Library to discuss funding, their future plans, and also helped to make some ladybirds and became an official member. The Toy Library was awarded a Big Lottery Grant at the end of 2010 for £1,938, much to the delight of the staff and volunteers who run the facilities. Nichole Browne from the Library gave Nicky a tour which covered their main programme of exchanging and lending toys for parents and caregivers, as well as a look at the on-site ‘Messy Play’ area. “Nichole and the team do an amazing job running the Toy Library. They work incredibly hard and provide a great service for local parents and caregivers, and are truly deserving of the Big Lottery grant”, Mrs Morgan said. “Having a young son myself, I am well aware of how quickly children can get bored of toys, and how expensive this cost can be. The Toy Library provide this brilliant service providing a huge variety of toys for children, as well as the different play areas on site to keep the young ones entertained for hours,” she said. Mrs Morgan said she was also surprised to learn that the Toy Library can host parties. Nichole Browne from the Library said: “We were very pleased to meet Nicky and explain to her how our Big Lottery grant is helping us to provide our valued play and lending services. Our current play topic is Spring, Growing and Mini Beasts and the children have had a lot of fun with our pretend-play flowershop, making tray gardens and decorating our mural with ladybirds. “Now entering our 26th year, we continue to provide a valued service to local people. We have over 550 members from Shepshed, Loughborough and 23 villages throughout the region. Shepshed and Hathern Area Forum The last meeting of the Shepshed and Hathern Area Forum was held at Shepshed High School on 14th February 2011 and was attended by 46 residents, councillors and officers. In response to requests for greater opportunity for networking and sharing information, there was beforehand a thirty minute period during which local residents could meet each other or talk informally, on a one to one basis, with the local Police, officers from Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council, and local councillors.

Green Spaces in Leicestershire

The main item on the agenda was an inter-active discussion on Green Spaces in Leicestershire. Local residents were asked to identify on large scale maps provided, and mark using different coloured flags, the local Green Spaces of importance to them. They were asked to explain why they valued them, for Landscape value, for Natural value, for recreational value or for Community value. The results will be collated together with the feedback at the other 26 Community Forums across Leicestershire over the next couple of months. All of this will help to inform local policy and planning processes as well as the County Council’s response to emerging national policies.

Local Policing issues

Sergeant Martin Owen, from Charnwood Local Policing Unit, reported that crime and anti-social behaviour were both down on the comparable period last year. The Police faced challenges due to budget constraints and across Charnwood 10 locally based offices will reduce to 6 but he remained confident that, with support from the public, the overall level of front line policing would not reduce and recent improvements would be maintained. Referring to the need to close Shepshed police station, and co-locate elsewhere, he said that this would be done when suitably affordable, and local, premises could be found.

Community-led Plan for Shepshed

Anne Glasper, secretary of the Community-led Plan group, explained that they had received grants from Charnwood Borough Council, the Rural Community Council, and now, with a grant from the National Lottery, would be able to distribute the questionnaire to every house in Shepshed. She explained that the survey needed to achieve the highest possible response from local people. This would give it the credibility to go on and seek further resources to improve Shepshed for the future and re-vitalise community spirit. In answer to a question, Anne reported that the steering group had a very wide and representative membership and is always open to other people with new ideas and who can get involved as little or as much as they want. There will be a further report on it’s development at the next meeting.

Next meeting

Cllr Christine Radford, chair of the Forum, was pleased with the meeting which had given people an opportunity to explain the range of green spaces available locally, what they use them for and why they value them. “I was very pleased to see a number of people at the Forum tonight for whom this was their first meeting” said Christine. This feeling was backed up by positive responses given by the public. “This was the first time I had attended a local forum” said one respondent “ and I found it a very good way to stay in touch”. The next meeting will be on Thursday 16th June 2011 at Hathern Club, 44 Dovecote Street, Hathern LE12 5HS, official meeting starting from 7.00pm. However, do please come, if possible, from 6.30pm when you will be able to talk to other members of your community and local councillors, officers and the police about matters of importance to you. There is limited parking available at the club, which is in Dovecote Street , so it is recommended to share a car if possible. There is parking available in the streets around and within an easy five minute walk of the club.

Shepshed Co-op Celebrates Facelift With Support For Local Toy Library

Shepshed Camera Club News The Easter holiday came as a welcome break for the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club after four competitions against other local camera clubs in just six weeks, both home and away. Home and return matches with Long Eaton Camera Club in consecutive weeks, using the same set of prints in front of two different judges, saw the Club lose the home round by a small margin and they also lost the away round as well giving Long Eaton a resounding success. The two annual competitions against the clubs from Coalville and Ashby proved more successful and whilst Coalville won the threeway competition, in which each club entered 16 prints, Shepshed took second place after winning outright the annual image matching competition earlier in the month by a considerable margin of points. In between these activities the Club also held its Annual General Meeting on 22nd.March at which almost the whole membership attended. The election for Committee members saw a change when the Secretary, Brian Walbey, retired after 21 years on the Committee and his place was taken by Brian Negus, and the Programme Secretary Phil Tapp also stood down after several years in his position and Pete Richardson replaced him. Jamie Bailey opted to continue with a further twoyear term in the position of Social Secretary. The members return for the first Summer Term meeting at the Council Offices, Charnwood Road, on Tuesday, 3rd.May and meetings go on until mid-June before the summer break until September. Members of the Shepshed Toy Library are celebrating receiving a donation from Midlands Co-operative Society as it unveils its new-look Shepshed foodstore. The store has undergone a major refurbishment and members of the Shepshed Toy Library joined store Manager, Neil Styring, to officially relaunch the store and celebrate receiving £2,850 towards refurbishing the Library. The money has been awarded from the Society’s Making a Difference Community Dividend scheme which distributes a percentage of the Society’s trading profit to local groups. Commenting on receiving the grant, Administrator for the Toy Library, Alison Jones, said: “We have been established for 25 years and have over 550 members who are able to join us for play sessions or simply borrow items for use at home and childcare organisations. Our objective for 2011 is to refit our mobile premises to improve its performance as well as making it more inviting for families. “I applied on behalf of the group for funds to replace doors, purchase new carpet, fit insulating roller blinds and new electric heaters. I was delighted when I heard that the application had been successful and we are now in the process of putting the improvements in place. We are very grateful for the support from Midlands Co-operative and we had a great time taking part in the official re-launch celebrations of the new look store.” Store Manager, Neil Styring, said: “We believe that the refurbishment has been a great success and I hope our customers agree! Two men were working for the council. One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one man digging a hole, the other filling it in again. An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn’t understand what they were doing. So he finally approached the hole digger, “I’m impressed by the effort you two are putting in to your work, but I don’t get it - why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?” The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, “Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we’re normally a three-person team. But today the guy who plants the trees called in sick.”

Photographic Exhibition in May

Churches, Chapels and Schools of Old Shepshed From May 9th to May 23rd at Shepshed Library Michael Wortley will be putting on a photographic exhibition entitled “The Churches, Chapels & Schools of Old Shepshed”.

As the title says the exhibition will look at religion and education in Shepshed from their earliest days. As well as the many photographs there will be short histories to accompany them. Michael is hoping to cover all the main denominations and schools that are still thankfully alive and well in the town, as well as some that have disappeared, and some obscure establishments that many may not even know about! The photograph above, which will appear in the exhibition, shows the great enthusiasm for the Sunday Schools. The picture shows them meeting in Shepshed Market Place on August 4th 1913.

Dragons’ Den winner revealed AN ENTREPRENEURIAL student has won an office free for a year after wowing judges in the hotly contested final of Charnwood Borough Council’s Dragons’ Den-style competition. Edward Williams, 22, convinced the panel of four judges that his business was a perfect fit for the office at Charnwood Borough Council’s Ark Business Centre in Loughborough. His company, The Arrogance, designs, manufactures and distributes promotional packs to thousands of student properties four times a year and has worked with corporate giants including Nokia, Vodka Revolution and Pizza Hut. The Arrogance also provides event management, marketing and web design services for local companies with a vision to expand the service nationally. Edward, who is in his final year as an industrial design student at Loughborough University, said: “I’m delighted to have won. It’s my birthday on Friday so this is the perfect present! “For me, it is the next step for what I have really being hoping for. This gives me the stepping stone to move on and build the business and take it to a national stage using Loughborough as my base. The town is an excellent place to build a business.” Edward’s winning pitch means he will now set up shop in his new office which is rent and service charge free for 12 months. Mayor of Charnwood Jill Vincent will present Edward with the keys to his new office at Charnwood Borough Council’s full council meeting on April 11. The judging panel consisted of the council’s deputy leader John Bush, Marina Pickles, Loughborough University’s student enterprise manager, Sanjay Pancholi, of Business Link and local businessman Robert Nash. Mr Nash said: “The standard of pitches was excellent which made the final a very close race. Everyone should be very proud of their efforts - but in the end we felt Edward’s business plan had the edge that we believe will

Bali Rai to visit Loughborough Library Local writing hero Bali Rai will be visiting Loughborough Library on Saturday May 14th in a joint event with the Charnwood Arts Kala Kahani Project. Having grown up in the heart of Leicester’s Sikh community, Bali Rai went to London to study politics. After managing a bar and almost becoming a journalist, he now devotes all his time to writing and visiting schools to talk about his books. Although Bali writes mainly for a teenage audience, his books hold a universal appeal. The newly released “Killing Honour” is described as “…utterly compelling and will be much-debated” by The Bookseller Magazine. At his Loughborough event on Saturday 14th May, Bali will be hosting a writers’ workshop in Loughborough Library from 11.00am until 12.30pm. He will be talking to emerging writers and will take them through a series of writing exercises to improve their writing skills. Places are free but limited and need to be booked in advance. In the afternoon, between 2.00pm to 3.30pm, Bali will lead a public author event in the Children’s Library where you will able to listen to him talk about his work and ask him questions. Art Attack for years 4 and 5 at Newcroft For their ‘Record Breakers!’ Topic this half term, the year 4 and 5 pupils at Newcroft Primary School have been looking at lots of different records.

They have learnt about geographical, sport, music and human achievement records, and used their skills as independent learners to find out lots of amazing things. They also wrote information texts about some of their findings, and tried breaking records of their own (like how many baked beans they can pick up with a cocktail stick!). In the final week of term they have been looking at art records, and the most expensive art works ever sold. They got very creative and messy when they all made their own versions of Jackson Pollock’s ‘Number 5’. This involved flicking paint all over their canvas to make bold, bright splashes of colour that evoked movement and emotions. Their work is displayed around their classrooms, and has received lots of positive comments from visitors and other children.

National Arts Funding Success For Charnwood A delighted Charnwood Arts has announced that the highly regarded organisation has been accepted into the new National Portfolio Funding scheme of Arts Council England with an award of £131,000 rising to £137,500 in 2014/15.

In a major shake up of national arts funding, Charnwood Arts has been chosen as one of only 695 successful organisations out of the 1,333 which applied to the Arts Council. This grant will sustain the core work of Charnwood Arts over the next three years including the innovative UK2K12 programme which the Arts Council have described as an ”interesting and proactive response to the build up to the Olympics and legacy period”. The core funding support from both the Arts Council and Charnwood Borough Council now gives Charnwood Arts a base level of resources on which to build and maintain the quality of its work and bring even more investment into the borough. Helen Flach, Chair of Charnwood Arts said: “The grant is a huge boost for the Arts in Charnwood and a valuable endorsement of the support shown to Charnwood Arts by the Borough Council over so many years. This is a partnership which works and national recognition at this level proves it!” Helen went on to say: “The challenge now is to raise additional resources, both within and outside the public sector, if we are to deliver the amount and quality of work to which the people of Charnwood have become accustomed. We are optimistic that new partners will come on board and by adopting different ways of working we shall succeed. We are disappointed that the Arts Council decided not to mainstream our pioneering work in literature but happy that the quality and importance of this work was acknowledged. This bodes well for seeking funding from other sources. We shall take our time to consider the implications of the Arts Council’s decision and, although it is not all we’d hoped for, we do recognise that these are difficult times for all organisations in receipt of public funds”. Charnwood Arts works with and supports a large number of organizations across Charnwood and beyond as well as providing employment opportunities for local artists. The work of the organization includes specialist work with young people at risk of offending, events, publishing in print and on-line, community projects and extensive workshop programmes through schools and community venues. The organization also works internationally, bringing the creative world to Charnwood and Charnwood to the outside world. This flag signifies that Belton and Hathern Scouts have set up camp for the weekend of the Fair. This event has its origins in the 1930s and is well and truly established on the local calendar; it is a true community event catering for all ages. The Fair is organised by the parishioners of Shepshed and Oaks-in-Charnwood who are very lucky to have access to such a beautiful site on which to hold their Fair. St James the Greater Church nestles by a rocky granite outcrop amidst the trees in the heart of Charnwood Forest. Members of the organising committee are delighted with the number of early bookings for charity, craft and trade stalls. Added to this the owners of classic vehicles, with both two and four wheels, are making sure that their display will be very worthwhile. An interesting demonstration of static engines is also planned. All dog owners are invited to bring their canine friends to take part in the Companion Dog Show, always an extremely popular part of the Fair. There will be music from Charnwood Concert Band, Newcroft School Band and the pipes and drums of the 1st Company Boys’ Brigade. A fresh addition to the Country Fair for this year is a Wildlife and Conservation area. Rotary Club Of Shepshed NEWS From John Fox-Russell On Monday 14th March our speaker was Dr. Heather Crate, one of the founders of STEPS - originally Charnwood School for Parents- which offers a unique service to children with Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and motor dysfunction. STEPS is situated on Loughborough Road, Shepshed and occupies the building once St. Botolph’s C of E school. The well qualified staff apply the principles and practices of conductive education pioneered in the Peto Institute in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Crate’s extremely interesting and moving presentation used a series of pictures showing how the children are aided in their own progress . Their parents, naturally, are invited to participate and are placed at the forefront of their child’s education. Children are admitted from across the East Midlands and there is currently no cost for the services offered by STEPS to the families of pre-school children. It is hoped that fund raising and grant applications will seek to maintain this approach.

Bill Brookman entertained us On March 28th we were entertained and informed by Bill Brookman speaking on his activities across the world in areas of strife and disaster. He referred, in particular, to his activities in Somalia and in Haiti where - by using his many skills as an entertainer - he was able to assist the involvement of the indigenous people, despite their suffering, in performing musical and other entertaining activities for their peers. Not only was this a positive activity but also it unearthed local talent which had no opportunity to develop otherwise. Bill has been involved in some extremely dangerous areas of the world bringing hope and enthusiasm where previously there was nothing but despair. His presentation opened our eyes a lot more on the difficulties experienced in repairing infrastructures after such a calamity as The Haiti Earthquake. Our thanks to Bill for this.

Sale and Fashion Show on 6th May On Friday May 6th the club is hosting a SALE AND FASHION SHOW at Shepshed High School from 7.30pm. There will be clothes for the YOUNG & TRENDY and for the MATURE & ELEGANT, sizes 8-26. Tickets are £5.00 (to include tea and coffee). News from The Interact Club of Hind Leys Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people aged 14 –18. Interact clubs carry out two community service projects each year, including one that furthers international understanding and goodwill. The Interact club was set up last May and the members have

been active in various ways. On Friday 8th. April the Hind Leys Interact club held a “Shepshed Has Talent” evening , where ten acts competed with each other in front of two judges. The standard, typical of that achieved by students at Hind Leys Specialist Arts College, was extremely good. The winner was Adam Ogrodzinsky who performed three pieces on the college grand piano to great acclaim. Although the audience was thin the appreciation of the audience showed their delight at such performances. All the acts were a great credit to themselves and to the college. This effort was to raise funds for the Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough and ,including a sum raised at a students lunchtime “do” before Xmas, £250 was the result. On Wednesday 13th April the changeover of members took place as Year 13s bowed out, after a very good year, for the new team, currently year 12, to take over. Last year’s President James Curtis was unavoidably absent so Vice President Duncan McGregor passed over the chain of office to Lily Patrick. The other significant event in the ceremony was the presentation from the year 13 treasurer Nathan Harris of a cheque for £250 to Mrs. Margaret Harvey an ambassador for Rainbows. Mrs Harvey, during her expression of thanks indicated that the Hind Leys Interact Club’s donation would be highlighted in the new building at the hospice. The President of The Rotary Club of Shepshed Rtn.Michael Fowkes presented each of the new team with an Interact lapel pin and thanked them for their commitment.

The father of a family - who was a big-time techie - got his oldest daughter an iPhone for her birthday. He also got an iPad for his son. Later he bought an iPod for the youngest daughter. Then, when his wedding anniversary rolled around, he got his wife an iRon. That’s when the fight began.

Nostalgia Spot

No windscreen wipers in those days! Maisie Walker has kindly sent us a few reminiscences about Old Shepshed. Maisie has set up a web site about Old Shepshed - visit www.memorylanehf.oddquine.co.uk My husband was born and bred here and his father used to own buses. I was an evacuee from the London Blitz and came to Loughborough in 1941 and met my hubby in 1946. We married in 1949 and came to live opposite the Queens Head in Church Side in a shared house with a Mr Kerry which has now been rebuilt into a nursing home I believe. Attached I have sent photos of two of the buses plus my father-in-law’s old phone card. He was one of the first 100 people to have a phone during those days so I was told. He had the buses before my hubby was born in 1928 although my hubby can remember them. He can also remember that his Dad had two more buses after those pictured and one of them had a piano in it which was known as the music bus. I don’t have photos of these, but I was told that they were made at the Willowbrook Coach Builders. The bus with the piano in was on show in London at Earls Court and that is where my father-in-law saw it and put the order in for one. The bus with the piano was bought for £800 and the piano was at the back of the driver. In the summer the roof of the bus would slide back. From what hubby tells me the buses were all hand painted then. One thing that amazes me is how the heck did the vehicles in the photos manage to go about 60+ miles without folks having to get out and push them. Just look at the narrow wheels on them AND they had no windscreen wipers. If it rained the driver had to push out the window, as you can see from the photo’s so that he could see his way along. What you might term as death on wheels. The driver always had a mate with him so that if it came down foggy the mate would walk in front of the coach waving a red lamp about so that the driver knew he was still on the road. Talk about living dangerously.

Shepshed Ford celebrates its 30th year! In 1982 Paul Watson aged just 22 embarked on a career in the Motor Trade and established his own Company ‘Watson & Cook Motors’ and specialised in the servicing and body repair of automobiles. The Company went from strength to strength thanks mainly to good business management and personal recommendations - and in 1994 became a Ford Retail Dealer. The Company - renamed ‘Shepshed Ford’ was authorised to sell new Ford vehicles together with quality used vehicles. Being under the Ford umbrella brings with it additional obligations and quality standards. From their new Charnwood Road showrooms the Company has to adhere to Ford’s service criteria, and employees are Ford Trained Technicians including 2 Master Technicians who are all qualified to carry out extended servicing to Ford warranties, and repairs to Ford and other vehicles. Although selling cars produced by one of the largest companies in the world, Shepshed Ford is still very much a family-run business serving the local community and surrounding areas. The employees offer a friendly and personal service, and two of the staff have a total of over 50 years service to the Company - an indication that the Shepshed Ford is a caring employer. Rotarians reward young achievers

On the website - which is aimed at people over 50 - you’ll find a lively host of people to talk to online about a huge range of interesting subjects. As well as providing a discussion forum, the site gives members the opportunity to upload their poetry and prose for the enjoyment of others. It’s free to become a member. The lady who called us is a prolific blogger on the SagaZone site, and has uploaded lots of interesting articles and observations on life. Her nom de plume on the SagaZone website is Fat Margot.

New book about bygone Shepshed Local historian Marjorie Shulz has written her third book about the town’s history. A Further Stroll Around Bygone Shepshed focuses on Shepshed’s industrial heritage, covering the history of framework knitting which was once the main occupation locally. Other chapters cover religion, the great De Lisle family property sale, and the war years. A Further Stroll Around Bygone Shepshed is priced at £13.95. It is on sale now at Shepshed Books and Loughborough Library as well as Shepshed Building Society. Shepshed Building Society donated £250 to Panda Eyes toward the publication of the book.

This is the 17th year that the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood have organised a competition for Young Writers in cooperation with the English Department of Harry Carlton School in East Leake, and last Tuesday at the club’s weekly meeting at the Whitehouse hotel in Kegworth, the winners were present to receive their awards. The competition is in 2 parts and the winners of the Junior Section were 1st Isobel Branch, 2nd Molly Callon and 3rd Douglas Creek, and the Senior Section prize winners were 1st Alex Forry, 2nd Alex Gray and 3rd Joshua Parry. They each received a framed certificate and a cash prize from Rotary President Roger Hutchinson, who paid tribute to the effort made by all participants to reach such a high standard. He also thanked the staff at Harry Carlton School for their important contribution, especially Mrs Lesley Bonser, Head of the English Department. The winning entry in each section now goes on to a District competition comprising over 80 Rotary clubs. The competition is sponsored by Pinders Solicitors of Derby. The Rotary club meets every Tuesday at 7.30 for 8.00pm at the Whitehouse Hotel in Kegworth and anyone wanting more information about Rotary activities is very welcome to come along.
