Be kind hedgehogsto THE LATEST State of Britain’s Hedgehogs report warns that between 30 per cent and 75 per cent of the UK’s population of hedgehogs has been lost in rural areas in the last two decades. The largest falls are in the eastern half of England. However, there is some evidence that in our towns and cities, a more stable population may be establishing itself, thanks to the constant help from considerate gardeners and animal-lovers. Aldi supermarketfourthtoMorrisonsovertakesbecomebiggest

ALDI HAS OVERTAKEN Morrisons to become the UK’s fourth biggest supermarket, according to the latest data from Kantar. The discounter’s market share leaped to 9.2% of the UK comparedtofourmarketgroceryintheweeks7August,to Morrisons’ 9%, according to a report by This is Money. Aldi’s leapfrog of Morrisons has been expected for a number of months as the hordes of shoppers switch to doing their grocery shop with the discounters as the cost-ofliving crisis puts budgets under pressure. Aldi and rival discounter Lidl have been snatching market share away from the Big Four grocers with £2.3 billion of annual sales gained over the past year, according to Kantar. Morrisons, which was bought by US private equity firm CD&R last year in a deal which loaded the retailer with a substantial debt pile, has been the hardest hit of the Big Four. This time a year ago, Morrisons held a 10% share of the grocery market.

IF YOU AGREE THAT THE FORMER WESTERN PARK GOLF COURSE IS A SPECIAL CASE AND IS A PERFECT CHOICE TO RECEIVE A SHARE OF THIS GOVERNMENT MONEY, YOU MAY WISH TO CONTACT LEICESTER CITY COUNCIL TO EXPRESS YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE FORMER GOLF COURSE Visit www.leicester.gov.uk TO JOIN JOIN THE CAMPAIGN GROUP, VISIT THE WESTERN GOLF COURSE AREA ACTION GROUP PAGE ON FACEBOOK.

She told the LeicesterLive that many people in the campaign group would be happy to help the council look after the area as volunteers, if it was saved. However, city mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, previously told LeicestershireLive the council was under ‘enormous pressure’ to find such sites for housing.

“I can’t believe anyone could walk that golf course and come away not thinking its a special case,” he added. “Yet someone has walked it and thought ‘hmm, this is a good place to build’. I just don’t know how they’ve come up with that.”

“You need large areas of woodland, in the right places and the golf course, I think, is in the right place. It’s surrounded by residences. It’s this green oasis and that’s how it should be kept.

“This fund is a golden opportunity. I know all councils are strapped for cash for any project, let alone an eco-project. Here’s a chance to get a decent amount of money to actually achieve a really good result.

Government ‘promising funding for Leicester’s parks’

new effort to save the former Western Park Golf Course, which they say has become a ‘green oasis’ in the past few years. The fresh call to save the former Western Park Golf Course from becoming a huge housing development was sparked by the promise of Government funding for Leicester’s parks.Leicester is one of 85 areas to be award a share of £9 million to create or redevelop green spaces and plant trees in a new Levelling Up initiative. Leicester City Council has said it will be taking advantage of this money, but has not yet decided what to spend it on. However, members of a local campaign group has said they know exactly where the money should go. The Western Golf Course Area Action Group said the site – described by many of them as a green oasis and a wildlife haven – is the perfect choice for this money and they have written to Sir Peter Soulsby to ask him to consider it.

“I think this is the golden chance to create something worthwhile. [The Government is] citing micro-forests, to my mind a forest the size of a tennis court is not a forest, it’s not even a wood. It’s better than nothing but it doesn’t really hit the problem the planet is facing.

New effort to save ‘green oasis’ ex-golf course from destruction

CAMPAIGNER STEVE WALTERS

One of the campaigners, who uses the area, takes her dog there several times a week. “It just seems an ideal candidate for this funding from the fact that it is well used,” she said. “I use it several times a week at least. We walk our dog on there. I know a lot of people locally who use it on a daily basis. There’s not a lot of green around and over the seven years its been redundant as a golf course its really rewilded and become a natural beauty area.“Iknow they have housing targets they have to reach, but there are so many brownfield sites in Leicester and Leicestershire to do that. So are there not other options for them to do that rather than to lose this green space. Once it‘s lost, it‘s lost. There’s no coming back from that.”

The campaign group is calling for the council to copy the example of places such as Derby and Mablethorpe which are rewilding their green spaces. Mr Walters added that he hopes, if the group wins their fight, the former golf course would be given a protected status so the threat does not crop up again. A city council spokesperson told LeicestershireLive: “We’ve been confirmed as one of the areas due to get £85k from the Government’s Levelling Up funding for parks, and we have replied confirming we are opting into the scheme. Over the next two months we will be looking at what projects the money can best be spent on to benefit the city, and submitting those proposals to the Government.”

The area closed for financial reasons seven years ago and has since started to ‘rewild’. It is now home to a variety of wildlife, including birds of prey, and many people in the surrounding neighbourhoods use it daily to exercise, walk their dogs or just escape into nature.

Steve Walters has walked the every day for the past 26 years and has long been campaigning for it to be kept as a wildlife haven. “The golf course is a picturesque space with ponds, a variety of trees and so much wildlife,” he said.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, on 13th September 1922, the highest temperature ever recorded in the world was reported to be 57.7 Centigrade (136 Fahrenheit) in Al’Aziziyah in Libya. This stood for nearly a century but was challenged at various times and eventually decertified by the World Meteorological Organisation in 2012, which believed there was a faulty reading. It was replaced by a record of 134F (56.7C), taken not in these heady days of climate crisis, but back in July 1913, at the aptly named Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley, California.

• Ensure the appliance is correctly installed by a fully competent engineer

Temperature peaks are measured in three major ways: air, ground, and through satellite observation. Of these, air measurements are used as standard because of the persistent unreliability of ground and satellite readings. Since these measurements generally are taken of necessity in extreme conditions, they are frequently challenged, and a great deal of uncertainty remains.

Highest temperatures ever recorded

There are many other examples of temperatures near to 60C going as far back as 1909 (Cherokee, Oklahoma) and 1966 (Sonora, Mexico).

FIRST’S tap on tap off works out at just £4.30 for return from Park Drive to the City! (I did it today!), Factor in the fuel and costs in city car parks, and it’s now cheaper to use the bus. They offer special group weekend tickets too.

The Saturday service also changes back to the “pre-covid” 30 minute frequency (between 10am and 7pm). There‘s no change to the early morning 13W service, and some very minor changes to the 14.

‘As I began my teacher training, little did I know of what awaited me. Almost three decades and seven schools later, I am head of a state secondary school. On the wall in my office is a children’s toy, a plastic monster’s head which, if pressed, emits a pre-recorded message: ‘It beggars belief!’. I press the monster whenever I, pupils, parents, staff, or the Department for Education do something that is notable, ludicrous, odd, bewildering or unreasonable. It is pressed so often that I am forever having to replace the batteries.’

IT WAS HALLOWEEN, Sue’s favourite night of the year. Sue loved all things supernatural and she relished opening the door to chil dren with their witch, skeleton and Dracula costumes. But sometimes she wished that Halloween could be a bit more, well, spooky. This year Halloween had fallen on a bitter wintry day. By 8pm Sue resigned herself to the fact that she had received her last visi tor and was about to blow out the pumpkin candles when she heard the click of the gardenPeepinggate.through the curtains she saw only the shadow of a little person brushing past her window. There was a sharp rap on the front door. Sue jumped. With a nervous laugh she picked up the sweets bowl and opened the door. On the step stood a boy. He was wearing a filthy thread bare shirt, a brown cap and trousers cut off at the knee. “What an original costume,” Sue declared. The boy hov ered awkwardly, half in shadow. “Happy Halloween.” She smiled and offered him the bowl.Without answering he stretched out a grubby hand and picked out a sweet, then frowned at it suspiciously as though he had never seen a jelly baby before. Sue peered down the path to the empty lane. Sue studied him in the light from the hallway. He was the height of a ten-year-old but his grimy face seemed older. The thing that concerned her was that he had nothing on his feet. “Have you lost your shoes?” she asked gently. The boy looked down sadly at his feet and said nothing. Sue thought of phoning her sister whose son was a similar age and might have spare shoes. “Where are your parents?” she said, beginning to feel worried. “Where do you live?” she asked nervously. The boy looked sorrowful. Who in their right mind would allow a child out on a night like this barefoot? “Aren’t you cold?” she asked. “No, Miss,” he said softly, wiping his nose on his sleeve. “I don’t feel the cold, not no more. I used to feel the cold in the old days when I cleaned chimneys, but not now.” He sniffed. “Now I don’t feel nothing.”

One recent recipient are the Leicester Ancient Order of Foresters Archery Club, who received a £4,000 capital grant towards installation of new toilet facilities at the club, including an accessible toilet. As an inclusive club offering archery to a wide range of ages and abilities, providing suitable welfare facilities for all members and visitors was a must. Quentin Mabbutt, Secretary at the club, said: “The Community Grants scheme is an excellent example of local government supporting local communities at a grass roots level. The scheme offers comprehensive support and monitoring throughout, is well managed and offers a range of funding opportunities for sports and community groups. lt is administered even-handedly and offers comprehensive support to applicants. the club is highly appreciative of the support Blaby District Council has given the Club.’

We were going down to Salisbury on holiday and there was a skydive centre there so I booked in for a tandem parachute jump from 10,000 feet, nearly 2 miles up. We arrived at the airfield at 9.30am on a beautiful summer’s morning and the parachutists were already performing. I had to wait for some time before being called forward to watch an initial training video and then into the fitting shop where we were all issued with blue jump suits. Eight of us then passed into the harness room where we were fitted up in our chute harness and shown how to prepare for the experience. The harness was very tight and uncomfortable in places but we were told it had to be to make sure you didn’t fall out of it. The eight of us met up with our jump partners and had the final checks before being taken into the despatch area. I was asked why I was doing the jump and explained that it was a birthday present but I have also turned it into a charity fund raising for GROBY SINGS, a local community choir. We were taken out to the plane, a single engine aircraft with bench seats down each side and only a roller shutter for a door, a very tight squeeze for 20 people with parachutes attached.Iwasnumber three in the jump queue, my instructor coupled us together and moved to the open doorway where we sat with our legs folded under the fuselage. With hands on harness, I had to look up at the sky, and then we were gone. At 10,000 feet you are in free fall for about 30 seconds, reaching over 125mph, but it felt a lot longer as we tumbled through the air. The instructor filmed the whole jump on his wrist mounted camera so the free fall didn’t make much sense but as soon as he pulled the ripcord everything changed. We went from 100mph+ to 20mph in a matter of seconds, now I can see why the harness was so tight. Once the chute had opened all you could hear was silence and views were spectacular, the Isle of Wight was visible over 30 miles away. By pulling on the parachute cords you can control the direction of flight, which he gave me for a few seconds. even do aerobatics if so desired, but so very soon we were heading for the landing zone.Legs held high, we came into land with the instructor cushioning the impact and slid to a stop. After disentangling ourselves from the harness and rigging we went back into the harness room and resumed our normal apparel. Would I do it again? Yes, especially as it has helped to raise funds for GROBY SINGS.

I live in fear that one day the real “World’s Greatest Dad” is going to show up to reclaim his rightful mug.

AT MY FIRST Signal Box at Amberley on the Mid Sussex line I was in charge of the whole station. One day this American couple were staying with friends in the village. One day they came to the station taking lots of photos. After a while the chap came to me in the booking office / signal box telling me about friends in USA called Mr and Mrs Amberley and how they would never believe there was a railway station named after them which I did not think was quite right! However apart from all the photos he wanted a station sign to take back. Remember there were no metal detectors in those days. Now of course I told him that the railway could not go around selling signs, but if he came back the next day I would see what I could do! That afternoon I was cleaning one of the signs and it somehow came away from the post and there was no way it was going back! So when our Americans returned the next day I passed on the sign to them. Needless to say they were very appreciative. My Station Master came on his usual visit the following week, getting off the train opposite the empty post. I had to admit that it was probably someone who collected railway items that had had the sign which was true in a way. Many years later the SM’s son who lives in Oadby bought one of my books. He told me that his Dad after retiring had moved to Oadby but unfortunately he passed away before I knew. I told his son that I would have loved to have met him again to tell him the truth about all the things I had done (but I did suspect he knew a lot more about what went on than he ever let on) but was happy as long as the station was run more or less properly! The station is still there today but there are no staff and the signalling is controlled by a super box miles away. Ted’s written many books on his life. For details email: edward8fw@btinternet.com

In 1967 the decision was made that no healthy dog should be put down and in 1978 the well-known slogan was adopted, “a dog is for life”. We were told so many interesting facts, it’s difficult to decide which to include. These you might find interesting: The state of the art shelter was opened in Loughborough in 2012 and in 2021 cared for 600 dogs. They receive on average 100 dogs a day with a capacity of 135. 56% are handed over by owners for a variety of reasons including ill health. Of course, as you probably know, this increased during the pandemic. When dogs are rehoused they are vet checked, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. While at the centre they are very well cared for with 3 to 4 different activities a day, plus there is a training barn and a vet suite.Wewere also shown two case studies - a before and after transformation. One could say it’s a dog‘s life (groan). This was definitely a worthwhile talk - very well presented by an engaging and knowledgeable presenter. Well done Jess.

IT WAS THE first day of school. As the new Head made his rounds, he heard a terrible commotion coming from one of the classrooms. He rushed in and spotted one boy, taller than the others, who seemed to be making the most noise. He seized the lad, dragged him to the hall, and despite his protests, told him to wait there until he was excused. Returning to the classroom, the Head restored order and lectured the class about the importance of good behaviour. “Now,” he said, “are there any questions?” One girl stood up timidly. “Please sir,” she asked, “May we have our teacher back?”

THIS WILL encourage you to brush your teeth: it seems that gum disease can increase your risk of developing mental health problems and other illnesses by more than a third. So say some researchers at the University of Birmingham, following a recent study of more than 64,000 patients with a history of gum disease. It was found that patients had a higher likelihood of developing depression, anxiety, autoimmune conditions such as arthritis, Type 1 diabetes or psoriasis, a skin condition. They were also found to be more likely to have heart or blood problems or Type 2 diabetes.

The CofE has published How Village Churches Thrive, a practical guide to help the churches –many of them historic listed buildings with small congregations – have a sustainable future.

4. Care for ‘God’s Acre.’ Engage the whole community in loving and caring for the churchyard.

Two storey side extension with gable roof, single storey rear extension, loft conversion with rear dormer, retention of as built fences in garden - at 23 Saintbury Road, Glenfield, Leicestershire LE3 8EN

3. Use buildings creatively. With thought and planning, your buildings can provide opportunities for people to connect with the community.

Church House Publishing, who published the new guide, describe it as “Packed with practical advice and inspiring case studies to encourage and increase confidence in all who work or worship in a village church.”

Single storey rear extension - at 4 Treasure Close, Glenfield, Leicestershire LE3 8LT

10. Communicate effectively. Focused communication supports your parish vision and strategy and ensures that all your efforts have more chance of being effective.

2. Make the most of life events – weddings, baptisms and funerals. Many people’s first contact with church begins through the church being there for them at life’s big moments.

7. Cultivate fruitful festivals. Festivals across the year provide ideal opportunities to celebrate, be innovative and creative, and –in partnership with schools, businesses and local groups – to welcome others of every age group.

Looking back, it seems quite sad As you only qualified by being poor Or missing a Mum or Dad.

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND has launched a 10-point strategy to help its thousands of rural churches survive and thrive.

WHEN PARENTS of toddlers often browse social media, they risk damaging the development of their child. A recent study has found that when mothers are on their smartphones, they talk to their toddlers only a quarter as much, give few opportunities for the child to practise conversation with them, provide a slower response to the child’s explicit bids, and even sometimes ignore the child when the child really needs help.Asmother-child interactions determine the child’s future linguistic development, vocabulary and self-confidence, the study concluded that the use of smartphones by mothers can have “an adverse impact on the foundation of child development,” which in turn may have consequences.“far-reaching”

The sand, the sea, the sun. The smiles on our little faces

5. Be the ‘heartbeat’ of a village community. Your church could affect positive change in village life. Leading a community audit could be an important place to start.

6. Celebrate your heritage. The history of the church buildings presents an opportunity for churches to connect with new people of all ages and backgrounds.

The strategy sets out 10 key areas “where applying relatively small changes can make a big difference to the revitalisation, recovery and renewal of our village churches, amplifying the efforts that may well be happening already.”

9. Reach the isolated and lonely. Village churches are in ‘the perfect position’ to make a positive impact on isolation and loneliness.

Over the sand dunes we did run Then - there it was in front of us

1. Extend a warm welcome. Think carefully and objectively about who your welcome is aimed at.

8. Welcome more children. Engaging with younger people is a priority for the CofE nationally – and village settings can offer great opportunities for creative ministry with children. Projects formed in partnership, especially with local schools, are most likely to thrive.

The ten key recommendations set out in the strategy are:

Hayley’s day job is as a teacher, but during the school holidays she’s embarked on a project of painting every church in the Diocese of Leicester – there are about 310 of them! So far she’s done about 50, still a long way to go. As she paints them she takes a photo of the completed work and posts it on Twitter. They are a fascinating – and beautiful – collection. I have a professional interest: one of my roles is as chair of the diocesan committee which scrutinizes applications for changes to church buildings. Often these churches are just names on a page, it’s lovely to see the actual building depicted, not just a photograph but with the eye of an artist.

In Hayley’s little bio explaining her project, she quotes from Romans 12.6: ‘We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.’ It’s a short verse, but with profound implications: diversity – we have different gifts, interests, strengths and passions (no-one would follow a twitter account of my drawings!); generosity – God has given gifts to each one of us, none are left out; and, Paul goes on to say, responsibility – we are to use these gifts, not deny others or God the benefits that come from our unique contributions.

As a community, and as a church, we need the full diversity of the gifts God gives. We need to be as generous in our sharing of them as God is in his giving of them. And in the use of them – as in Hayley’s use of her gift – we find beauty, insight and joy.

Our city is a microcosm of the world; we are a most diversely populated place, with over 55% from a global background. Just think about that. Celebrations, festivals, traditions, carnivals, we boast award-winning restaurants all over, choose food from every corner of the globe, and we‘re even home to over 70 different languages. Both our ethnic and religious backgrounds are so diverse, it‘s impossible to really declare any one as the most common. This puts us in an incredibly rare situation where we‘re living side-by-side as minorities. UNDOCTORED: The Story of a Medic Who Ran Out of Patients by Adam Kay This is Going to Hurt was the publishing phenomenon of the century, read by many millions, loved by at least fifty of them, and adapted into a major TV series. But it was only part of the story. By turns hilarious, heartbreaking and humbling, Undoctored is about what happens when a doctor hangs up his scrubs, but medicine refuses to let go of him.

THE SUN was shining and the atmosphere excited for our Annual garden show, celebrating 150 years since the very first one in Glenfield. There were some fantastic exhibits, ranging from some enormous onions to some wonderful paintings and intricate knitting. The local community came together to help set up and many newcomers came to show off their growing and baking successes. There were lots of first time winners such as Ernie and Jane Marston who won Best Newcomers for their entries across many categories and Silje Haarr for her delicate skyline painting. Les Hadfield, Martin Webster, Malcolm Kirk and David Allen swept up in the horticultural classes and Pat Neal in the Flowers. Our members brought along some of their garden blooms to adorn our floral arch and baked some lovely cakes which were served outside to some vintage music. The show was judged a huge success and thanks must go to our sponsors Glenfield Television who very kindly support us every year and to the Parish council for their support and loan of equipment. The show would not go ahead without exhibitors so many thanks to all who took the time to make, bake and grow and thanks to our GGA members for helping organise, bake, sell raffle tickets and grow plants. It’s a big event to plan and we appreciated all who got involved.

• OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS resume on 27th September with a talk by John Gibson on ‘Bulbs’ at 7pm in St Peter’s Church Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. I do backing vocals. It’s me who says, ‘This vehicle is reversing.’

The Glenfield Gardeners’ Association News from Liz Douglas Community comes together to make the Annual Garden Show a huge success!
