A day in the life

One of the great pleasures of my job is to get out several times a month and meet people in the industry. As we move into meeting season, I urge you all to take every opportunity to attend your association meetings, mill weeks, outings, open houses, trade show events, etc. These are the ties that bind this great industry we work in. I can say for myself, in addition to meeting great people, I learn a tremendous amount. The effort and cost that go into putting these events together beg your support.

I had an interesting time this month. I went to San Francisco for the Western Building Show-and probably should have stayed in bed under the covers for two days. In the first hour of the show, I fell from the third step of a prospective advertiser's booth. I performed an unimpressive swan dive worth no more than a 4.8, and landed prostrate on the floor, looking up at a startled marketing manager. Now while I was thinking advertising space, he was thinking lawsuit. Unbowed, bloody legs and all, I carried on, at least trying to give the impression of professionalism.

Later that day, I got off the hotel shuttlebus and proceeded into the lobby searching for my wallet. Quickly realizing I had left it on the shuttle, I raced out to see the bus sitting at the next light. With my camera on one shoulder and my camera bag on the other, I began chasing after the bus. Within 30 yards the light changed and off it went. I did my film stuntman routine running through and against the traffic lights in Union Square, jumping over and around cars, as my bus slowed for the next light. When I approached within 20 yards, off it went again. Two lights later, and a half a mile from where I started, one overweight publisher, minus 5 lbs. of sweat, banged on the door of the bus. The driver, noting my crazed panting, assumed I was a wino or pan handler, and began to drive off, until a passenger asked him to stop and open the door for me. My wallet was under the seat where I left it.

Next morning, my passion for food overcame me, and I went down to Fisherman's Wharf. On the way back, I stopped to order a crepe from a street vendor. Back at the parking lot, I couldn't find my parking ticket. I finally located it-lying in the street, three blocks back at the crepe stand.

On the other hand, I have to say that the Mill Week I attended in the Umpqua Valley the following week just reminded me how lucky I am to do what I do. As part of the entertainment, the event included a wonderful trip on jet boats down the Rogue River through the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Picture 5O-seat jet boats doing wheelies, at full speed, in the middle of the river. I have never heard so much laughter, although any one ofus could have won a wet T-shirt competition.

I hope you all block out at least a few days vacation over the summer, and enjoy what seems to be the first good consistent bout of weather of the year in most of the country. Business seems good-let it continue. Get out and meet your industry friends. Have a great summer.
