NADRA crowns national deck winners
The North American Deck and
Railing Association honored the 2020 award winners for its National+ Deck Competition at its annual meeting April 22. Builders were able to meet in person for the first time in nearly a year in Clearwater Beach, FL.
Attendance was expected to be lower than normal due to the pandemic, so NADRA made the decision to live-stream the event. Over 100 members in attendance were thrilled to be together again. Several who were not in attendance sent in personalized video messages.
“What a great event! Year after year the level of creativity, vision, and craftsmanship continues to raise the bar,” said Michael Beaudry, NADRA’s executive VP. “Where will you take it next? That’s the joy we all receive from watching the awards night, whether in person or online. It’s a night that we, as an industry and as an association, look forward to each year. This year there was something very special about it.”
The association honored builders in a large range of categories. First place overall went to Decksouth of Marietta, GA., which also took home top honors for Alternative Deck $50k-$100k and Alternative Deck Over $100k. But it was LS Underground in Longmont, CO., that spent the most time at center stage, winning five first place awards in Wood Deck $25k-$50k, Alternate Deck Under $25k, Refinished/Restored Deck, Illumination, and People’s Choice.
Other first place winners included Casey Fence & Deck, Frederick, MD., for Wood Deck Under $25k; DBC Construction, Wood Deck $50k-$100k, Open Porch, and Railing; Infinite Decks, Alternative Deck $25k-$50k; Holloway Company, Closed Porch and Dock; Premier Outdoor Living, Unique Features; Fraser Decks & Patio Covers, Limitless Creation Over $100k; Ferris Home Improvements, Limitless Creation Under $25k; Deck and Basement Co., Commercial Project; and Wolf Home Products, Manufacturer Project.

estled in the high country of onifer, ., sits a property with breathtaking views and multiple decks totaling up to 1,200 s . ft. of deck space. The pro ect, which is ad acent to a local park and overlooks San sabel ational Forest, features a main deck that consists of a dining area with two walkways coming from opposite sides and a step-down octagonal seating area with a 360° panoramic view. Another deck is a private balcony o the master bedroom that overlooks the park. A third deck is waterproof and built over the garage.
But despite the phenomenal views, the pro ect was a challenge and the builder, onathan oeller of olorado ustom overs & ecks, had to ree amine things like weather and product choice. “The build took place at the end of winter,” said Moeller. “We had to battle a couple of big snowstorms, but the wind really was the toughest. We were lucky Budget Home Supply in Longmont made the trip up the narrow, windy roads.” Still, Moeller and his crew were able to utilize the existing deck posts and caissons and did not have to dig into frozen ground.
Another challenge came when the homeowner wanted to keep the existing framing. “That always concerns me because often there is lack of understanding about what issues the existing framing might pose,” he said. “As often happens, once we started to tear o the old redwood decking, it was clear that the framing had to be replaced.”
Moeller chose Deckorators Voyage mineral-based composite decking in Mesa and installed with dge lips. Deckorators rooftop sleeper system was used for the third deck over the garage. “When you have a million-dollar view, you want to make sure the materials are the same caliber,” said Moeller.
The homeowners also had a di cult time deciding on the rail. Originally, they wanted to go with a wrought iron, but cable

railing was recommended for unobstructed views while matching the decking theme. According to Moeller, changing from the bulky 2x6 rail with 2x2 pickets to cable rail completely transformed their view. “The cable allows the viewer to have no obstructions and is a more a ordable choice compared to a glass rail,” Moeller explained.
The result left the homeowners incredibly happy with their deck, as they can now en oy the views without having to worry about the issues their previous redwood deck was giving them.
