PILOT PROGRAM: Lowe’s store in Mill Creek, Wa., has a “digital twin” that allows the chain to improve store planning, layout and stocking.

LOWE’S TESTS VIRTUAL STORE MODELS

Lowe’s Cos. has created in-depth, interactive 3D models of two of its stores to glean greater insight and visibility into inventory data and store layouts.

Called “digital twins,” the models are basically virtual replicas of the physical stores, updated in real time with information from sensors and point-of-sale devices, such as cash registers. Digital twins are currently being tested for its Mill Creek, Wa., and central Charlotte, N.C., stores.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the virtual models can help store planners optimize layouts and better perform analytics on inventory and sales data. Employees on the ground can access their store’s model by wearing augmented reality headsets, which project detailed information about the inventory in front of them, including partially obscured items in hard-to-reach places. When restocking or reorganizing inventory, clerks can check their work by overlaying a hologram of the twin over the actual version to make sure they’ve put everything in the right place.

So far, the models have allowed Lowe’s to learn when two specific products are commonly bought together, so they can then be positioned closer to each other.

Lowe’s is unsure when or if it will produce digital twins of additional locations, but—if it did so—priority would be given to branches that frequently update their layouts to focus shoppers’ attention on seasonal products.

WHAT A RELIEF

Rhythm, Island Stone’s new collection of dimensional stone tiles, incorporates modern manufacturing techniques with precision machinery to offer a new take on the popular wedge design relief.

Rhythm’s prominent design attribute lies in the smooth transition between the highest point, or apex, and lowest point of each slender tile strip. The elimination of rugged, angular joints at the apex creates a soothing overall appearance, while highlighting the natural appearance of stone.

It comes in a honed finish and a choice of four colors: Crystal White, Sandstone Grey, Sandstone Mint, and Sutra Black. The 3-1/8”x15-3/8” tiles are suitable for indoor and outdoor spaces.

Surprise and delight were the hallmarks of the 20th annual Old Time Lumbermen’s BBQ, which returned Sept. 17 to Roger and Michele Burch’s ranch at Smokey Ridge in Healdsburg, Ca.

The event also marked the return after a several-years absence of Jim Lewman, whose father, the late Ron Lewman, originated the gathering.

During the years at other venues, the Burches performed some renovation work on their beautiful oasis among the redwoods. Scars of the big fires that raged in the area a few years ago were still visible on the nearby hillsides, but had only licked the picnic area. Lovely new tables were brought in to accommodate larger parties. The entire area looked pristine and festive, with chainsaw-carved bears frolicking about.

As a housewarming gift, George Albertson gifted the Burches with two of the gorgeous planters his company now manufactures out of repurposed posts.

The picnic lunch consisted of BBQ chicken thighs and pork ribs accompanied by delicious black beans and rolls. An open bar, soda, water and wine from the Burches’ private label winery, Smokey Ridge, kept guests talkative and their thirst quenched.

In a world dominated by email, text and a pandemic, it was a refreshing change to see old friends and colleagues and communicate face-to-face again. Electronics may

1 improve efficiencies, but the lumber business has always been rooted in personal network of relationships.

The event allowed “old timers” to interact not just with each other, but also with the next generation, who were able to expand their base of resources while adding some historical context that measures the milestones of how the industry has grown—with renewed purpose to keep it growing.

Ace Hardware is rolling out its Extra Mile Promise, a guarantee that Ace has the expert advice and supplies needed to help consumers successfully tackle any paint project with just one trip to the store.

Available at participating stores nationwide, the vow was created to address and relieve the frustration consumers deal with when faced with the proposition of yet another trip to the store as a result of forgotten items or not enough paint. Ace is so confident in its one-trip guarantee that it will provide free delivery to consumers who may be in need of additional paint supplies.

“While it hurt our pride to learn this, the truth is that while consumers trust Ace as the Helpful Place, far too many of them believed that our speedy sized stores didn’t have enough product to complete their paint project,” said John Venhuizen, president and CEO. “We know this isn’t the case, so to assuage these misperceptions, we decided to stand behind our large paint assortment with the Extra Mile Promise. Our objective is simple: to be known as the #1, best, most convenient, most helpful and most credible store for paint in the neighborhood.”

Weyco Recalls Coated I-Joists

Weyerhaeuser is recalling a batch of TJI Joists with Flak Jacket Protection, after linking an odor in certain newly constructed homes to a recent formula change in the coating that included formaldehyde-based resin. The issue is isolated to Flak Jacket product made after Dec. 1, 2016, and does not affect any of the company’s other products.

Flak Jacket Protection is a coating applied to I-joists to enhance fire resistance, and it is not widely in use. The product is present in the basements of about 2,200 houses in various stages of construction in limited markets. Most of the houses are not yet occupied.

Weyerhaeuser will cover the cost to either remediate or replace affected joists. It has halted production, sales and shipments of the product, and is collecting unused product from customers.

Approximately $9 million of the product has been sold since December 2016. Weyerhaeuser expects to spend $50$60 million resolving the issue.

Housewraps, Weather Barriers Trending in Residential Market

Housewrap preferences are gradually evolving, according to a recent presentation at the Housewrap 2019 conference on builder and consumer practices by Ed Hudson, Home Innovation Research Labs.

Hudson shared that about 60% of all housewrap and weather-resistant barrier (WRB) material is installed on new homes; the remainder is installed primarily on homes being re-sided.

DuPont’s Tyvek continues to dominate with nearly half the housewrap and WRB installations in new homes. DuPont established leadership in technology and education early and have maintained that leadership for decades.

Traditional mechanically-attached housewraps still make up more than two-thirds of all housewrap and WRB materials installed, but alternatives are making inroads. Combination WRB and structural sheathing panels, such as Huber’s ZIP System and Georgia-Pacific’s ForceField, now make up about 10% of this market among new homes. Self-adhered membranes are now approaching 10% of the market, as well. Fluid-applied membranes now constitute 13 about 3% of new home housewrap/WRB installations. Alternatives to traditional housewrap are found more extensively on higher-end homes and multifamily buildings.
