Tri-Creek Lumber & Hardware, Lowell, In', has sponsored a winter coat drive every,December for the past six years. {9,9f last year, mor€'than 2,300 new and gently wom winter coats-plus a large number of new hats, gloves and scarves-have been donated. The ,',itg-ms are distributed to local churches and a nearby i.ihelter that works to alleviate family violence.

Coats of all sizes are welcomed, but:g{es,for'schoolage children are especially needed. "Dorrations for these sizes can tn:vg,ry low, but requests for them are vely high," says emgioyee Nancy Panozzo, who organiztX the annual drives',.She says that one customer of thg:.:itore comes in every year to ask what's neededand ihen goes out and buysthe requested items. According toPanozzo,it's one way for thaf cuq&Serand manf others who participate in tfre Ari*e::iO give back tothe community and honor help they once received themselves.

Panozzo says that the idea for the first coat drive came from an employee. Advertising takes the form of free public seryice announcemetts in local newspapers and on local radio programs. She also hangs information flyers in the showroom, although, after six years, it's mostly word of mouth.

' Since donated items are collected in the back of the kitchen and bath design center, customer$ who never venture outside the hardware area get a tour of this side of the store. Some have expressed surprise that TriCreek has such a large, well-stocked showroom.

"We think it's wonderful that people take the time andl,money to shop for new coats, hats and scarves," sayslPanozzo. "It's a great way to celebrate the spirit of the season." ':.t'
