Fir Door lnstitute Reorganizes

A comprehensive reorganization of the Fir Door Institute, with inauguration of a full inspection system, based upon official Institute standards, and the employmerrt of a managing director to head this program, tvas announced recently.

N. O. Cruver, president of the Fir Door Institute, Tacoma, Wash., said the inspection system, approved unanimously by member con"rpanies of the Institute, n'as inaugurated August 15.

"By inaugurating this official inspection system," saicl Mr. C.ruver, "the fir door industry serves notice that it intends to build up high manufacturing standards for its stock doors.

"Nlember companies of the Fir Door Institute rvill carry on their products the official grades of the Institute, and the seals rvill include the identifying F.D.I.

"The Institute intends to vigorously push these standards, so that jobbers and buyers rvill con.re to respect the seals that members are using on their product. The seals, and standards, rn'ill be supported by a vigorous advertising, promotion and publicity carnltaign throughout the industry."

John O'Hara Harte has been appointed new managing director and has already arrived from Philadelphia to assume his duties as head of the Institute's staff and activities.

Mr. Harte, who entered the lumber business with his uncle, E. H. Harte & Sons, Cork, freland, and later rvent with Lamm Lumber Company, Modoc Point, C)regon, r,vent into ne\\,spaper work in 1929 and, after 10 years with The Evening Bulletin, Philadelphia, entered the public relations and advertising field in 1939.

He has served as Director of Publi,c Relations, philaclelphia Housing Authority; Manager of Public Relations & Advertising, Curtiss-Wright Corporation, Propeller Division, Caldu'ell, N. J.; account executive with Steve Hannagan Associates, New York, for Owens-Illinois Glass Company, and Libbey Glass Company, both of Toledo, O.; and rvith Young & Rubicam, Inc., New York, for the ,{merican Hotel Association.

The inspection system will be under the direction of llomer J. Galbraith, who has been appointed chief of the 'Iechnical Division, Fir Door Institute.

Mr. Galbraith served as superintendent of the Clear Fir Lumber Company of Tacoma for almost 20 years-from 1923 until 194I, and, when the plant rvas acquired bv Northr,r'est Door Company, from 1941 until it burned dol,n.
