GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE

INDIGO BAY ISLAND RESORT & SPA

Grootbos has always shown a serious commitment to conservation. However a major threat to this is high local unemployment and a lack of access for local communities to natural resources, which the Reserve has set out to redress and which has resulted in many accolades, including the prestigious Responsible Tourism Award for 2007. The Grootbos Foundation was set up in 2004 and has worked tirelessly in the conservation of the biodiversity of Grootbos and its surrounds, plus the development of sustainable nature based livelihoods through eco tourism, research, management and education projects.

This Mozambique beach retreat employs a community liaison officer who escorts guests to local villages where they can learn about the lives, history and culture of the place and its people.

One such project is the Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College which provides training programmes for local unemployed people in both horticulture and eco-tourism. In addition to the education curriculum the college provides transport, meals, uniform, equipment and a basic wage, while on completion an accreditation is awarded with the result that 90% of past students have secured full-time employment. Linked to the college is a plant nursery and landscaping business which generates income for the following school year. Guests on the reserve are always encouraged to visit the school, and of course to contribute. Another project is the Spaces for Sport Project where, with the encouragement and passion of Grootbos and its founder, the Gansbaai Communal Sport Centre for the use of the local community and townships was opened this year. Grootbos recognizes that sport is an easy and simple way of bringing people together and breaking down social barriers. It also provides pride and a determination to succeed and has already proved its popularity – sometimes more than 100 children turn up to the many coaching sessions.

The resort and its staff are dedicated to the natural environment and are in the forefront of promoting the sustainability of surrounding eco-systems, as well as working for the social and economic benefit of the local people. Hence they work actively to develop local skills, they employ and buy locally wherever possible and are involved in implementing health and educational programmes. They also try to ensure that the resort promotes energy-saving measures and sustainable building projects. On Bazaruto Island, Indigo Bay are involved with the World Wildlife Fund and the Mozambique Government with conserving the area’s rich flora, fauna and marine life – the latter includes the protection of game fish, seasonal whales, dolphin, dugong and several species of marine turtle, as well as the waters and reefs which support them. The local community are also educated on the importance of conservation and working with the authorities to counter any illegal fishing in the areas. The resort has also built a community centre and health clinic, has initiated an adult literacy programme and established a community market garden which supplies fresh produce to the property as well as providing employment. While in support of the local culture and faith, Indigo Bay has built a mosque to serve the needs of the local community and sponsors islanders to travel to Mecca each year.

Add to this a Future Trees Project and a number of greening initiatives within local communities and guests can easily see and understand Grootbos’s commitment to its locality, to conservation and eco-tourism.

ROBIN POPE SAFARIS

UTHANDO SOUTH AFRICA

Located in Zambiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s South Luangwa region, Robin Pope Safaris have pioneered local community relations via their support of the local educational facilities. For over 15 years the company has supported a school in the Nsefu Village area, and Kawaza Basic School now has the reputation in Zambia of being a great example of how help from tourism can improve a community.

Uthando is a non-profit organization and a truly unique Responsible Tourism initiative based in Cape Town. Its mission is to provide a platform and infrastructure to raise funds from individuals, groups and organizations who have an interest in the region.

Originally the Kawaza School Fund was concentrated on the one school, but recently it has expanded to work with four local schools. The main focus has been on building projects but recently an ambitious five year plan has been formalized, which will create a full school system in the area, allowing all the children of the locality the opportunity to receive a full education. To date Kawaza School has 750 pupils while Nsefu has 350, and to ensure that they get the best education available the Fund helps subsidise the teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; salaries, which helps reduce the student-to-teacher ratio. Many safari guests have visited the schools and been so impressed with the work being done there that they have donated money whilst on holiday or made a tax-deductible pledge when they return. In fact because so many guests who visited the schools said they would be interested in learning more about the local way of life, Robin Pope Safaris now offer the opportunity to stay at Kawaza Village for a day or a night.

Money generated from such organizations as Africa Travel supports a broad range of local community-based, innovative empowerment projects with substantial and enduring value to the beneficiaries. In addition Uthando aims to provide tourists with an authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many South Africans, and the innovative and truly inspirational ways in which these problems are being handled. The exposure of this programme to many people around the world facilitates a vital role of ongoing awareness, creation and education, which in turn helps to make a significant difference to the lives of the most destitute and marginalized communities living in Southern Africa. One of the many projects supported by Uthando is Nazareth House, an orphanage for children living with HIV/AIDS, where visitors to Cape Town can share in a truly moving and uplifting experience. Other projects supported by the fund include drug rehabilitation, housing and shelter support, human rights development and sustainable economic development.

BOTSWANA Botswana’s natural wonders may be Africa’s best-kept secret. A true wilderness, where twenty percent of the country is a protected national park, it houses some spectacular areas like the Okavango Delta (the world’s largest inland delta), the Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve. There is no shortage of game either, which is free to roam this vast area. Dubbed the lake of stars by Livingstone when he first saw it because of the clear and magical reflection of the stars at night, the lake, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ninth largest, sits at the southern end of the Rift Valley and is a veritable playground for locals and visitors alike with its superb beaches and great fishing. It is also home to some 500 varieties of the tropical cichlid fish, while in December on its shores a myriad of different species of orchid grow. As well as the wonders of the natural world, Malawi is also home to a number of archaeological and anthropological sites where fossils, Iron Age workings and rock paintings can be seen.

RWANDA Rwanda, just a few degrees south of the equator, is the colour of emeralds from the forests and sapphires from the lakes. It is literally a jewel of a place. Known as the land of a thousand hills, for wherever you look you will find hills, mountains and volcanoes towering above. It is also the place where Dian Fossey fought off poachers and politicians to save the very rare African mountain gorilla. Now it is a country in recovery from the genocide which near devastated it, but its tourism and hospitality industry is fast getting back on track. For further information visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk 1 Booking your holiday To make a holiday booking the customer should complete, sign and send in a booking form with a deposit of 20% of the holiday cost requested or the full amount if the booking is made within eight weeks of departure. (iii) Amendments by the company After the confirmation invoice has been issued, the company makes every effort to operate all holidays as confirmed. In very rare circumstances, the company may have to modify your holiday before you depart. If the modification is significant the company will notify you as soon as practically possible and you will be entitled to: (a) take a substitute package of equivalent or superior quality at no extra cost to you; or (b) take a substitute package of lower quality and recover from the company the difference in value between the original arrangements and the new ones; or (c) have repaid to you as soon as possible all monies paid by you under the contract, where upon your holiday arrangements will be cancelled. In addition, if the Company has to modify your holiday it will pay you compensation for nonperformance of the contract (see table below for levels of compensation), if this is for any reason other than â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;force majeureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (see next page)

‘Force majeure’ means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond the company’s control, the consequence of which neither the company nor its suppliers could avoid even if all due care had been exercised. This may include, but is not limited to, war, threat of war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity (actual or threatened), industrial dispute, technical problems with transport, machinery or equipment, power failure, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, flood, drought, adverse weather conditions and level of water in rivers. If the company becomes unable to provide a significant proportion of your holiday after it has commenced, suitable alternative arrangements will be made for you at no extra charge to you or, alternatively, you will be returned to your point of departure and given a pro rata refund for ground arrangements not received. You may also in such circumstances be entitled to compensation by the company in accordance with the table above. (iv) Cancellation by the company If you fail to pay the balance of the holiday price at least eight weeks (fifty six days) before departure, the company will treat your booking as cancelled and levy the cancellation charge as set out in paragraph 3(ii) above. If the company is obliged to cancel your holiday in any other circumstances before departure, the company will use its best endeavours to offer alternative arrangements at no extra cost to you, or offer a substitute package of lower quality and you may recover from the company the difference in cost, or have repaid to you as soon as possible all monies paid by you. In addition, unless the cancellation has been caused by force majeure the company will pay you compensation as set out in paragraph 3(iii).

(v) The company liability (i) We accept responsibility for ensuring that your travel arrangements, which you booked with us are supplied as described in our printed material and the services offered reach a reasonable standard. If any part is not provided as promised, we will pay you the appropriate compensation if this has affected the enjoyment of your travel arrangements. (ii) We accept responsibility for death, injury or illness caused by the negligent acts and/or omissions of our employees, agents and suppliers, whilst acting within the scope of/or in the course of their employment in the provision of your travel arrangements. We will accordingly pay to you such damages as might have been awarded in such circumstances under English law. (iii) In respect of the services provided by air or sea carriers, our liability in all cases shall be limited in the manner provided by international conventions and conditions of carriage of our suppliers. Copies of these conventions and, conditions of carriage are available on request. Operational decisions may be taken by air or sea carriers and, airports and ferry terminals resulting in delays, diversions or re-scheduling, over which our company has no control. When such changes are made, our company will endeavour to minimise any inconvenience. (vi) If you have a problem If you have a problem during your holiday, please inform the relevant supplier (e.g., hotel) and our local representative immediately, who will endeavour to put things right. Not only may prompt action enable you to enjoy your holiday, but it is also a legal requirement, the omission of which can substantially affect your rights against our company. If it is not possible to make the complaint to the appropriate organisation at the time, you should make contact with our company, so that our company can endeavour to resolve it. However, should a problem remain unresolved, a complaint should be made in writing to our company office manager within thirty days of your return. (vii) Our company price policy Our suggested itineraries are prepared many months before the start of your holiday and the prices quoted in them are for your guidance only. If at the time of booking the price has changed from that shown in our suggested itineraries, you will be told of the revised price applicable to the travel arrangements before you commit yourself.
