Unlike some agents and experts we recommend what is right for you, not for us and we will continue to change, amend and make suggestions until you are happy. But above all we will be honest with you especially if you are being too ambitious and want to pack too much in to a break. Sometimes distances and transfers in this vast continent are much greater or less frequent than in others. It is our job to alert you to this and to explain exactly how far or how quickly you can travel and still enjoy it to the maximum.

…if you want to spa-out in the Seychelles, we know the man who can pamper you …if you have always wanted to experience a Migration river crossing, we know the riverbank to sit on …if you want a wine-tasting tour, we will organise it …if you want to enjoy an elephant back safari, we are the people to ask … if you want to go on safari with the last Master Tracker in South Africa, we know him and will book him for you …if you want to fish on the Chobe river as the sun comes up, we know the best spot …if you want to go cage diving with sharks, just leave it to us

Why? - because between us we have more than 250 years of experience and knowledge of the place. And if you think that is an exaggeration just remember that the three principal directors of the company have some 75 years experience alone! Add to that our local Cape Town office, the number of our staff who are African, and the rest of us who visit frequently and have grown to love the “dark continent” - all its mystery, magic and magnificence. We can guarantee you will have the best holiday of your life when you talk to us.

GIVINGBACK We at Africa Travel are strong believers in ensuring that those who live in destinations visited by tourists benefit from such visits – whether it be directly through employment in the travel industry, or indirectly via community programmes, outreach projects or educational schemes.

12

Whenever possible we try to feature and recommend those properties and suppliers ‘who give something back’ and who have policies of employing staff and utilizing resources from the local community. Here are some who receive our support and backing.

GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE

INDIGO BAY ISLAND RESORT & SPA

Grootbos has always shown a serious commitment to conservation. However a major threat to this is high local unemployment and a lack of access for local communities to natural resources, which the Reserve has set out to redress and which has resulted in many accolades, including the prestigious Responsible Tourism Award for 2007. The Grootbos Foundation was set up in 2004 and has worked tirelessly in the conservation of the biodiversity of Grootbos and its surrounds, plus the development of sustainable nature based livelihoods through eco tourism, research, management and education projects.

This Mozambique beach retreat employs a community liaison officer who escorts guests to local villages where they can learn about the lives, history and culture of the place and its people.

One such project is the Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College which provides training programmes for local unemployed people in both horticulture and eco-tourism. In addition to the education curriculum the college provides transport, meals, uniform, equipment and a basic wage, while on completion an accreditation is awarded with the result that 90% of past students have secured full-time employment. Linked to the college is a plant nursery and landscaping business which generates income for the following school year. Guests on the reserve are always encouraged to visit the school, and of course to contribute. Another project is the Spaces for Sport Project where, with the encouragement and passion of Grootbos and its founder, the Gansbaai Communal Sport Centre for the use of the local community and townships was opened this year. Grootbos recognizes that sport is an easy and simple way of bringing people together and breaking down social barriers. It also provides pride and a determination to succeed and has already proved its popularity – sometimes more than 100 children turn up to the many coaching sessions.

The resort and its staff are dedicated to the natural environment and are in the forefront of promoting the sustainability of surrounding eco-systems, as well as working for the social and economic benefit of the local people. Hence they work actively to develop local skills, they employ and buy locally wherever possible and are involved in implementing health and educational programmes. They also try to ensure that the resort promotes energy-saving measures and sustainable building projects. On Bazaruto Island, Indigo Bay are involved with the World Wildlife Fund and the Mozambique Government with conserving the area’s rich flora, fauna and marine life – the latter includes the protection of game fish, seasonal whales, dolphin, dugong and several species of marine turtle, as well as the waters and reefs which support them. The local community are also educated on the importance of conservation and working with the authorities to counter any illegal fishing in the areas. The resort has also built a community centre and health clinic, has initiated an adult literacy programme and established a community market garden which supplies fresh produce to the property as well as providing employment. While in support of the local culture and faith, Indigo Bay has built a mosque to serve the needs of the local community and sponsors islanders to travel to Mecca each year.

Add to this a Future Trees Project and a number of greening initiatives within local communities and guests can easily see and understand Grootbos’s commitment to its locality, to conservation and eco-tourism.

ROBIN POPE SAFARIS

UTHANDO SOUTH AFRICA

Located in Zambia’s South Luangwa region, Robin Pope Safaris have pioneered local community relations via their support of the local educational facilities. For over 15 years the company has supported a school in the Nsefu Village area, and Kawaza Basic School now has the reputation in Zambia of being a great example of how help from tourism can improve a community.

Uthando is a non-profit organization and a truly unique Responsible Tourism initiative based in Cape Town. Its mission is to provide a platform and infrastructure to raise funds from individuals, groups and organizations who have an interest in the region.

Originally the Kawaza School Fund was concentrated on the one school, but recently it has expanded to work with four local schools. The main focus has been on building projects but recently an ambitious five year plan has been formalized, which will create a full school system in the area, allowing all the children of the locality the opportunity to receive a full education. To date Kawaza School has 750 pupils while Nsefu has 350, and to ensure that they get the best education available the Fund helps subsidise the teachers’ salaries, which helps reduce the student-to-teacher ratio. Many safari guests have visited the schools and been so impressed with the work being done there that they have donated money whilst on holiday or made a tax-deductible pledge when they return. In fact because so many guests who visited the schools said they would be interested in learning more about the local way of life, Robin Pope Safaris now offer the opportunity to stay at Kawaza Village for a day or a night.

14

Money generated from such organizations as Africa Travel supports a broad range of local community-based, innovative empowerment projects with substantial and enduring value to the beneficiaries. In addition Uthando aims to provide tourists with an authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many South Africans, and the innovative and truly inspirational ways in which these problems are being handled. The exposure of this programme to many people around the world facilitates a vital role of ongoing awareness, creation and education, which in turn helps to make a significant difference to the lives of the most destitute and marginalized communities living in Southern Africa. One of the many projects supported by Uthando is Nazareth House, an orphanage for children living with HIV/AIDS, where visitors to Cape Town can share in a truly moving and uplifting experience. Other projects supported by the fund include drug rehabilitation, housing and shelter support, human rights development and sustainable economic development.

Where are you going to go with this brochure? Where will these pages lead you? To fresh places of mind or undiscovered territory? Much more than a brochure, this is a testament - a testament to the as yet uncharted. To the secret spaces of Africa, to a continent that is awakening and ready to inspire. It serves as a call to return to humanity’s roots, to complete the very large circle your ancestors began. And then, of course, to come full circle once more as you return to your home.

Indeed, journeys and circles share much in common. Perhaps this is why, since ancient times, the circle has informed so much of Africa’s unique sense of beauty and design, evidenced in its abundance both in her spectacular natural beauty and her peoples accomplished artistic history. We hope this brochure inspires you to discover Africa for yourself as you indulge in its rich pages and imagine the road that lies ahead.

SOUTH AFRICA Whatever the traveller seeks – he can find in South Africa. Vast empty spaces, wilderness, glorious beaches, dramatic scenery and the warmest of welcomes. From the scorched plains of the Kalahari desert to the rich fynbos, and from the great game reserves teeming with lion and elephant, thousands of antelope, the elusive leopard and the endangered wild dog to the biggest night skies filled with millions of stars, South Africa offers abundance. It’s the country where two oceans meet and converge providing a spectacular coastline, much of it ringed with vast golden beaches enjoying the seductive warmth of the Indian Ocean and the great rollers of the Atlantic. It is also the ideal place to see the greatest creatures of the deep during the whale-watching season and is one of the few places on the planet where you can spy penguins on the sands. Add to this the gentleness of the Garden Route, the splendour of the Drakensberg mountains, and the riches of the Kruger National Park, which supports more species of wildlife than any other in Africa and affords the traveller views of the Big Five at close quarters. And then of course there are the sophisticated cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg with their world-class restaurants, cafés and bars and superb galleries and shops. All of this plus a near perfect climate - even out of season it can be warm and temperate - the friendliest of people and, with just an hour’s time difference, no jet-lag, is it any wonder that the traveller falls in love with South Africa.

Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve

The younger, smaller, sassier sister property offers just six suites, reckoned by many to be the most beautiful in the bush, which has resulted in the many awards it has received since its opening. Each suite is lavish in both size and dĂŠcor with a separate living area, open-plan bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, and huge viewing deck complete with day bed and heated swimming pool. Decorated simply in shades of ebony and ivory with modern African art and artefacts, it is the ultimate in Afro-chic, with guests hardly needing to move from their decks to see some fantastic game along the Sabi River.

Lion Sands River Lodge

Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve

This game reserve forms part of the Kruger National Park, so consequently the game roams free - some truly spectacular sightings are possible from the lodge. Stretched out along the banks of the Sabie River, on a site which sports trees almost 800 years old, are 18 thatched luxury rooms. Each one has its own private viewing deck and faces east to greet the magical morning sun and amazing African dawn. Access to the main areas of the lodge – the dining room, bar, swimming pools and spa - are along raised wooden walkways sheltered under a canopy of the great trees. For four generations the lodge has been in the hands of the same family, all of whom are passionate about the wild and its conservation.

“A river that forgets its source will surely dry up Old Ibo Saying

ZAMBIA Zambia offers an unforgettable safari experience with a huge diversity of game. The country offers more than 750,000 km² of protected wilderness, spectacular waterfalls, massive lakes and rich wetlands. From the mighty Victoria Falls, known by the locals as “mosi-oa-tunya” or the smoke that thunders, and the great Zambezi River to two of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa – the Luangwa and the Kafue National Parks – the scenic splendour of Zambia has no rival in Africa. It was only in the mid-19th century that Western explorers found their way into Zambia – the most famous being David Livingstone, the first European to see the Falls and who named them Victoria after the English Queen. On the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe, they are the most extraordinary spectacle and one of the main tourist draws. Zambia is achieving a growing popularity amongst discerning travellers, with its lodges and camps concentrating on catering for this market on a small, highly personalised scale which makes them some of the best on the continent.

BOTSWANA Botswana’s natural wonders may be Africa’s best-kept secret. A true wilderness, where twenty percent of the country is a protected national park, it houses some spectacular areas like the Okavango Delta (the world’s largest inland delta), the Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve. There is no shortage of game either, which is free to roam this vast area. A land-locked country, it seems almost to be embraced and protected by South Africa to the south, Namibia to the west, and Zambia & Zimbabwe to the north and east, and is a place of forests, deserts, great plains and wetlands. Additionally Africa’s third largest river, the Okavango, flows down from Namibia into the Delta, which is a warren of lagoons, streams, channels and islands and is not just one of the finest game-viewing regions in the world, but also one of the best for birdlife. The best way to explore the Delta is by mokoro, a type of dug-out canoe, which is both a magical and near mystical journey, especially at sunset. One of the more astonishing elements of the Delta is that it eventually disappears into the vast drylands of the Kalahari Desert, where the original Bushmen still live. Botswana has purposely aimed for and achieved a policy of high-income, low-volume tourism with some of the safari camps and lodges rivalling the world’s finest.

NAMIBIA A magnificent, magical and mysterious land, Namibia is one of the oldest places on earth and one of the youngest nations (it gained independence only in 1990.) It is a land of two deserts – the Namib and the Kalahari, searing plains, vast areas of nothingness and an extraordinary coastline where the icy waters of Antarctica meet the searing heat of the African desert. Penguins and wrecks abound here – the remains of ships gone aground and whales which have lost their way give it its name of the Skeleton Coast. Like a different type of ocean, the desert defines Namibia with its constantly changing colours, from the palest silver to the deepest red as the light plays with the shifting sands. Sossusvlei, one of the oldest and driest eco-systems on the planet, also sports the world’s highest sand dunes - walking to the top is a must for visitors. Etosha National Park is one of the great nature reserves of southern Africa where game is in abundance, while in the far north west Kaokoveld is one of the emptiest places in the world - populated only by herds of wild elephant and a single tribe, the Himba, who have lived there, almost since the dawn of time. Damaraland is home to the endangered desert elephant and desert rhino and is also where a petrified forest and examples of the 1,000-year-old Welwitschia plant can be found. The wonders do not end there, with the Fish River Canyon providing spectacular views, (only surpassed in size by the Grand Canyon) and the Caprivi Strip boasting lush wetlands where the Chobe and Zambezi rivers meet.

KENYA Kenya is synonymous with safari, for it was the precursor of this type of adventure travel which offers this extraordinary and exciting experience in the wild, with the opportunity to see nature’s Big Five: elephant, lion, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard. And it still offers some of the best safaris anywhere - whether from a jeep, on foot or on horseback. A vast land which stretches from the Indian Ocean across the low plains to Lake Victoria on the border with Uganda, and to the central highlands which are bisected by the Great Rift Valley, right through to Mount Kenya, the country’s highest point. It is a land of explorers, farmers, adventurers and more than 70 indigenous tribal groups while offering the most magnificent national parks and nature reserves on the continent. Choose from the Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro or the Masai Mara at the northern end of the Serengeti, which is part of the whole migration experience where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and antelope follow the rains. Alternatively the Samburu Reserve is almost desert, whilst the Rift Valley Lakes, both freshwater and salt, are famed for their profusion of birdlife, hippos and crocodiles. TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR The vast plains of Tanzania provide some of the greatest game experiences in Africa with the wildlife here considered by many to be the best anywhere. It is particularly spectacular during the annual migration in which over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebra head south every October and November, returning northwards after the long rains from April to June – an amazing experience to see and hear. This takes place through the Serengeti, the most famous of all East Africa’s safari parks, where the Masai have grazed their cattle for millennia and which they know as Siringitu, ‘the place where the land moves on forever’. For wide open spaces, great herds of game and over 350 species of bird it is difficult to beat Tanzania. Add to that the chance to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in the northeast; the remote Selous Game Reserve; Olduvai Gorge where the fossil remains of the two million year old Nutcracker Man were discovered; the Ngorongoro Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera which provides nature’s own theme park for game; and the silken beaches of the Indian Ocean – and here is a destination that cannot disappoint. Head across to Zanzibar for the spices and souks, deserted beaches and pristine coral reefs, and the bazaars and Arabic architecture of Stone Town for a totally different side to your holiday.

RWANDA Rwanda, just a few degrees south of the equator, is the colour of emeralds from the forests and sapphires from the lakes. It is literally a jewel of a place. Known as the land of a thousand hills, for wherever you look you will find hills, mountains and volcanoes towering above. It is also the place where Dian Fossey fought off poachers and politicians to save the very rare African mountain gorilla. Now it is a country in recovery from the genocide which near devastated it, but its tourism and hospitality industry is fast getting back on track. Most visitors come to see the gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans, and with the number of permits to view these gentle giants strictly limited these need to be arranged well in advance. The gorillas are a magnificent sighting and one never forgotten, while the Parc itself is a dramatic chain of seven volcanoes which provide a border with both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Thoughts and dreams: these are the foundations of being” West African Saying

MAURITIUS Exquisite and exotic, Mauritius is an island for all seasons, all moods and all tastes. The interior offers mountains and forests, waterfalls and sparkling rivers alongside the occasional dormant volcano. Its high rainfall has helped make the soil rich and luxuriant which is why the vegetation is dense with more than 1000 indigenous plants, it is also why the island once got so rich from its sugar crops and plantations. Of all the Indian Ocean islands, Mauritius is the most cosmopolitan. For centuries it provided a useful and strategic staging post for traders, wayfarers, pirates and conquerors and has absorbed what it needed from all of them – the French and English, the Indians and East Africans not to mention the Dutch and Chinese – in attitude, language, religion, food and joie de vivre. Its coastline is near perfect with acres of pristine beaches and bright blue seas – all fringed by coral reefs, which make the beaches not just desirable but also safe from the outer wildness of the ocean. As a result, Mauritius is a haven for both sun seekers and water sports aficionados – in short, the almost ideal holiday destination

THE SEYCHELLES If getting away from it all is what you truly desire then head for The Seychelles, just over 100 tiny islands scattered across 455 square kilometres of Indian Ocean. They are, as the locals say, a thousand miles from anywhere, the African mainland being that far away while the Indian sub-continent is twice the distance in the other direction. And while they may be a sunworshippers paradise they are also a nature lovers dream come true – with giant turtles, some over 250 years old and giant fruit bats, one of the noisiest eaters on the planet - not to mention the birds. There are birds on The Seychelles that you can see nowhere else in the world - from the last flightless bird in the Indian Ocean, the whitethroated rail, (a younger version of the dodo), to the magpie robin, one of the most endangered species on earth with only 92 left. Add to that some of the most beautiful, pristine beaches, and clear seas miles away from anywhere, and you have true Robinson Crusoe territory.

MADAGASCAR A magical island, the world’s 4th largest, Madagascar is a vast, mystical land just waiting to be discovered. A former colony of the French, it offers a beguiling array of things to see and do and areas to be explored. Rich in flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else on earth, a typical trip can include the lemurs of the Perinet Reserve, the baobabs of Morondava, the whales of Sainte Marie and the narrow streets and alleyways of charming Antananarivo and, whilst the infrastructure may be poor, the rewards are rich. The jewel in Madagascar’s crown however is the offshore island of Nosy Be and its outlying neighbours. Largely undeveloped but boasting direct flights from Europe and some superb beach hideaways, this really is island paradise. With whiter sands, clearer seas and more dramatic settings and sunsets than any of its Indian Ocean rivals, the idyll is completed by virgin beaches with nesting turtles and playful dolphins

MOROCCO Morocco is as exotic as it is exciting, from the tip of its snow-capped mountains in the High Atlas to the edge of the great Sahara desert, taking in along the way towns, villages, settlements and oases - some as old as time, not to mention the majesty of the Atlantic coast and the hedonistic warmth of the Mediterranean. It’s a place of mystery and history with great food, amazing markets, seriously luxurious hotels and riads, hidden palaces and secret gardens. From the deep red earth of the north and the great swathes of ochre and russet that make up the buildings and walls of the old Imperial cities of Fes and Marrakech, to the bright green patches that dot the desert and the shimmering silver of the heat of the desert, it is a land of colour, scents, music and bells - a place that reawakens all your senses. Witness the silence of the desert and then the cacophony that is Djma El Fnaa, the magical main square of Marrakech with its snake charmers and story tellers, savour the scent of roses in the markets of Taroudant and Tangier and contrast that with the pungency of the tanneries in the ancient city of Fes. A place of contrasting emotions and experiences, Morocco is a country visitors return to again and again, even if it is just for a weekend.
