Bula Vinaka! The day I pressed publish on my very first blog post, I never dreamed that after one year, Bula Bride would blossom into the gorgeous orchid that it is now. The past year has been a true whirlwind, one that has been overwhelming, exciting, scary and has seen moments where I have had to dig my toes firmly into the sand. To watch what was but a dream serve its purpose – to inspire, inform and connect, is truly humbling. To think that this is only the beginning of what Bula Bride has to offer is really exciting. Within the 16 months, Bula Bride has been living and breathing, it has seen a whole lot of firsts. In May 2014, Bula Bride debuted to the Fiji Tourism Industry with a cocktail soirée at the Sofitel post Fiji Tourism Expo. In May, we also set forth on our very first styled shoot at the divine Vomo Island Resort with a team of talented Fiji wedding vendors. In October, Bula Bride was nominated for an AON Fiji in Tourism Excellence Award. November saw Bula Bride attended our very first wedding expo, helping to bring Fiji wedding vendors over to Australia to meet with brides one-on-one. And now the launch of Bula Bride’s very first magazine, the first bridal magazine dedicated to Fiji destination weddings. I hope you enjoy flicking through the pages – with either a cuppa or cocktail in hand – of what I hope is a truly special first edition. Everything that you love about Bula Bride but even more wonderful and tangible. I dedicate this first issue to all those who have supported and embraced Bula Bride over the past year and a half. And most of all to my husband Andrew for his unconditional love, encouragement and support through the venture. BB

When a client books with us we always like to set the expectation of what the planning process will be like. We don’t want our clients to get stressed out, and we want them to understand that it will all come together in the end. Once the excitement of planning a destination wedding wears off, it can be a little daunting sifting through all the information and looking through all the different resorts’ websites. The options available can be overwhelming and you just don’t know where to start. This is where we suggest you talk with an expert like Bula Bride, who understands the process of planning a wedding and also has an extensive knowledge of Fiji. — FIJI MADE —

There is nothing better than a bit of handicraft and especially when its made in Fiji. Beyond the wood carvings, tapa cloths and weavings there is another unique product on offer –made from sand. Glass. I came across Hot Glass Fiji early last year and it was love at first sight, with their glass pieces reflecting the land and aesthetics of the Fiji Islands. They are absolutely stunning and their wide range of wares make for the perfect wedding gifts and favours. From tumblers and glass bowls, to wine bottles, cheese platters and memory pebbles that can be engraved with your names and wedding date, Alice’s extensive range of goods is always evolving. Not only does Hot Glass Fiji make and produce gorgeous homewares, they have participated in Fiji Fashion Week collaborating with Robert Kennedy Designs on jewels to compliment Robert’s resort wear. They also made the trophies for the recent Fiji International PGA at Natadola Bay Golf Course, among many other sporting events & awards. If you are on the Coral Coast, a visit to the studio is a must and while you are there you can even have a go at glass blowing! In the following pages we chat to Alice to find out a little bit more about her venture, what inspires her and what’s next for Hot Glass Fiji. Rob Rickman of Three Loose Coconuts visited the studio in Korotogo to capture Alice and the team in action. BB

BB: What is your connection to Fiji? HGF: We first worked in Fiji in the late 1990s for a dive operation on the Coral Coast. I had recently left my glassblowing job in the UK to travel and dive, and Fiji was a wonderful place to be and made a huge impression. We often said that it would be the best place in the world to bring up a family, but at the time we didn’t have one. When we moved on we spent two and a half years in Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa, and there we had Alfie, our oldest son. Following our hearts, we returned to Fiji in 2003, opened a dive shop and settled down, have been here ever since and are now proud Fijian citizens.

I trained and worked as a glassblower for eight years before being distracted by travel, diving and Alex, my then future husband. In Fiji, the stunning colours of nature, both over and under water were inspirational and when I got a chance I rented studio time in the UK or New Zealand to create Fiji-inspired pieces. The response to these was wonderful, and we decided that if we could, we would open a studio in Fiji and introduce glassblowing. It took a while – and various twists and turns – but in 2013 Hot Glass Fiji was launched and Fiji had its first hand blown glass studio!

BB: Whats a typical day? HGF: A day in the studio starts early, as the

BB: What services do you offer the Fiji wedding industry? HGF: We offer Fiji-made wedding gifts and favours. We noticed that people loved their Fiji weddings but often found it tricky to find things from Fiji to highlight their occasion. We have a range of glassware, such as scent bottles, goblets, bowls or decanters, which make wonderful wedding gifts. To complement these, I decided to design a range of glass that are specifically made as favours and mementos – our memory pebbles and napkin rings for example. One of the great things about this is that we also offer glass blowing experiences at the studio, where bridal parties are able to come and make their own pieces. It’s a really fun thing to do as a group, people have a great time and genuinely get to make their own memories. cont. »

lots of boxes? Well you heard it here on Bula Bride first, the next big place to go off will be Vuda! The word Vuda means “source” in Fijian, is home to Visesei Village as well as a bustling marina and a variety of great accommodation choices, it makes for a great place to hold your wedding. Legend has it that the first Fijians landed at Vuda Point, north of Nadi, about 3500 years ago after traveling for months across the Pacific on large canoes. It is easier nowadays as it takes 20 minutes to drive from Nadi International Airport to the area. There are a couple of established smaller resorts in the area, including Anchorage Beach Resort and First Landing.

Both of these resorts offer good value accommodation for guests too. But rather excitingly we also have two new places offering something quite different. The owners of the iconic Hideaway Resort on the Coral Coast are opening a brand new resort for adults only. Due to open mid-2015, it will have 20 bures & suites, pool, restaurant and bar and a day spa. For weddings there will also be a gorgeous Beachfront Wedding Chapel. The BB team are looking forward to this one opening as it will provide a higher standard and exclusive resort, with a chapel on a lovely beach, and yet still close to the airport – ideal! Another favourite new place for BB is the amazing Heavens of Vuda Mansion. Totally different to anything

to share your big day with family and friends, there are a few factors to consider, to ensure that your guests can not only be part of your wedding, but also make the most of their holiday. An average guest list ranges from 25 to 125, and when planning a destination wedding, you must at least consider the fact that not all of your guests will be able to make the trip to share in your day. Unlike a wedding back home where they may only have to travel an hour or two, you are asking your guests to come away on a holiday with you. Some might not appreciate or understand the idea of a destination wedding, others will jump at the idea. But for those who are open and willing to come over you must consider their budgets and be open to how they spend their time in Fiji. Here is some practical advice for ensuring your guests can attend or be a part of your day:

The small transfer boat headed to Vomo, instantly I could see crystal blue water and became very keen to take a dip. Hitting the sea shore, I was greeted with a warm Fijian Island welcome and refreshments. Into the minivan and straight to the restaurant for breakfast while my room was being prepared. Vomo Island has only one restaurant, Reef Restaurant which caters for all guests during their stay. With an outlook over the pool, the restaurant’s evening and lunch menu changes daily to ensure guests get a bit of variety during their stay. The breakfast menu remains the same with plenty of choices to fill up for a day of lazing or adventure ahead. And let me tell you, the food is good that you will definitely not tire of it. The resort also boasts two bars – The Vuda Bar (located next to The Reef Restaurant) and The Rocks Bar located further down the island overlooking Vomo Lailai.

the Spa. The staff adores kids and every child I saw was laughing and smiling. There are two main beaches at Vomo Island, both idyllic for sunbathing and a refreshing swim. The beach adjacent to the villas is a tropical paradise, the other is on the other side of the island through the golf course, a little calmer and best for snorkeling. The villas are gorgeous, clean and comfortable. The bed is probably one of the best I have every stayed in and ever so romantic with the draping mosquito net. The balcony out front allows you to relax in the sea breeze or cater for private dining. Complimentary laundry service, robes, slippers, and minibar make the stay extra enjoyable. I hope to return to Vomo Island very soon, most of all to be able to sip on a cocktail while watching the sunset over Vomo Lailai. Vomo is truly a slice of paradise. BB

Wedding cakes, french toast, coconut chocolate brownies, Oh my! These are just a few of my favourite things from the Taste Fiji Kitchen. You may have heard about Taste’s wedding cakes and dessert bars on the Bula Bride blog. They are Fiji’s #1 for wedding cakes and desserts, and what’s more fantastic is that they have only been open for two years. There is so much to Taste then just weddings. Taste Fiji has a little coffee shop – Taste Fiji Kitchen in Nadi (15 minutes from Denarau Island via taxi) serving coffee and refreshments alongside a daily changing menu of breakfast, sweets, lunch and hampers. If you are after a place that makes a decent coffee and away from the resorts, or a pit stop on the way to and from the airport then Taste Kitchen is the place to go to. Keeping himself extra busy, owner and Executive Chef, Lee Acreman also does private catering, is the exclusive caterer for multiple venues in Fiji and looks after the menu at some of Fiji’s top resorts. Lee’s enthusiasm for working with the freshest local ingredients and products adds to Taste Fiji’s offering of some of the tastiest food in Fiji. In the following pages, we chat to Lee from Taste Fiji Kitchen to find out a little bit more about his and wife Lou’s venture, what inspires him and what’s next for Taste. Leezett of Leezett Photography visited the kitchen in Nadi to capture a behind the scenes look of what goes down in the kitchen. BB

DAVE + LAUREN 16th July 2014 – Koro Sun Resort Lauren is from Melbourne, Australia and Dave grew up in California in the USA, so straight away the concept of “somewhere in the middle” was intriguing. One of the tough aspects of our relationship is the distance between our hometowns and therefore between each of our families and oldest friends. We were enamored with the idea of our family and friends from different sides of the world and getting a chance to spend meaningful time with one another – snorkelling, sunbathing or hiking. Lots of research, primarily around travel logistics for our guests, helped us create a short-list of destinations. Fiji was high on that list already, and then the eureka moment came. A very good friend reminded us that we would be a step ahead in Fiji because we already had friends at Koro Sun Resort in Savusavu.

124 | Bula Bride | #01

| 125

THEY WORE On only our second shopping trip, the dress was found at Karen Willis Holmes in Armadale. The dresses are magnificent, the fittings were private and the final product sublime. We can’t talk up these wonderful ladies enough! One of the main wedding attire challenges was the complexity of dressing Dave and the groomsmen in matching suits, as most of them reside in the US. We struck gold when we were recommended Joe Black in Melbourne, and let out a massive sigh of relief when we saw everyone with their suits on in paradise.

126 | Bula Bride | #01

THE CEREMONY We chose to have our ceremony at the entrance to the rainforest at the rear of the grounds. The space is situated next to a peaceful stream of running water and surrounded by lush plant life including beautiful natural ferns and huge established trees. The light levels are perfect and the space is naturally sheltered from wind and heavy rain. The staff at Koro Sun were able to cover the forest floor with sand to create a flat walking surface between the tree roots. Timber benches were borrowed from the local village to provide some seating. In lieu of any form of floral arbor, we opted to position ourselves, the local minister, and the wedding party in front of the natural greenery of the space.

| 127

THE RECEPTION While the resort offered multiple options for the wedding reception, we chose to utilise the main Koro Sun dining hall, as this room offered the best layout to accommodate our guests. The challenge lay in recreating the special space that our guests had become familiar with during the ceremony. To achieve this, the resort sourced locally harvested bamboo, cut it to specified lengths, and we constructed a temporary ceiling structure across the roof trusses from which to hang almost 100 paper lanterns. The effective ceiling was lower and completely different visually from what they had seen for the entire week prior. Sporadically placed soft yellow light bulbs produced warmth across the dining space during the speeches and delicious Fijian style lovo meal.

128 | Bula Bride | #01

THE DAY AFTER The great thing about having our guests at the same island resort for the entire week was that we were guaranteed to see them once again for breakfast the next day. Fresh fruit, coffee, and maybe a cheeky mimosa or two were all on offer to get everybody back on track for a day of sunshine and activities. The itinerary was flexible, with guests opting for snorkelling, a waterfall excursions with the bride and groom, or a sneaky afternoon nap as they pleased. We were so fortunate that most of our guests were able to stay for more than one day after the wedding. This time after the main event proved particularly relaxing and special. We all exhaled together and enjoyed a unique block of extra time and space.

RUNE + LILLY 14th July 2014 – PARADISE TAVEUNI We wanted the day to be about us, and for us. We are not fond of big parties, and don’t really like to have the attention all on us. Another factor was that I have a HUGE family, and Rune has almost no relatives. If we were to get married at home, the party would feel more like a family reunion on my side, than a wedding. We had never been outside of Europe together, and had no chance to travel to find the perfect venue. All we could do was to trust our agency, Google everything, and hope for the best. Our travel agent recommended the island of Taveuni because of the tropical feel, the people, and the fact that we wanted the occasion to be as intimate as possible. At first I was bummed because there are almost no beaches on the island, and the idea of getting married on a beach had to be put aside. But after the 90 minute plane ride from Nadi to Taveuni in a tiny little airplane, and the one hour bumpy ride from the airport to the resort, we were blown away over the beauty of the resort. The beaches didn’t matter, I wouldn’t have wanted them anyway! The tropical, green, lush, beautiful area that surrounded us was topped only by the incredibly lovely staff at the resort. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that we had everything we needed, and the experience was awesome. We are super happy with our decision, and have so far only gotten positive remarks, even though no one knew beforehand, and didn’t know for about two months after the wedding.

| 131

THEY WORE Style 6772, in the collection “Voyage” by Madeleine Gardner in ivory. The wedding dress was really important to me. I wanted to feel like a bride, without losing myself. I wanted to have a bridal gown that I could pack as hand luggage and that looked great the moment I unpacked it, something that worked in the heat, and most of all looked great in the environment. Rune doesn’t like to wear a suit, and he hates light garments, so we agreed early on that he could choose what he wanted to wear himself (as long as it fit with the rest of the colours). He ended up with a black shirt, a blue tie, a simple black vest, dark blue jeans, blue socks, and the most amazing shoes he has ever owned.

132 | Bula Bride | #01

THE CEREMONY The ceremony was held at the most beautiful cliff on the resort, with an amazing view of the ocean. It was so intimate and perfect. We decided on the location as soon as we arrived, and had originally chosen a much narrower point, but we ended up using that for some of the photos instead. The staff at the resort did an amazing job with the decoration of the ceremony space. We said our vows in our own language (Norwegian), as that was what felt the most natural for us. The celebrant led us through an amazing ceremony, with wonderful words, and wise tips. We also had to do a part of the vows in English, but we were really happy with it all.

| 133

THE ADVICE Plan with good time ahead. There are surprisingly lots of things to think of while planning a wedding, even with a wedding as small as ours. Be clear on what you want. Sit down with your partner and go through the details – even the boring ones! This helps you relax the last few weeks before the big day. Make sure you both agree on everything, but don’t forget to enjoy the planning! Pack your most important things in your carry on luggage! We were without our luggage for five days in Orlando, and even though we had to buy some clothes to get through, I was not too stressed, knowing I had my wedding dress and Rune’s outfit – the two most important things for our day. We ended up with our luggage which was a relief. Trust the resort and your wedding planner. They are used to this, and have done hundreds of weddings. They will do almost whatever you want, and have hundreds of ideas if you are unsure about anything. Remember to have fun! This is a once in a lifetime experience, so make sure that you take some time to enjoy it all. Fiji is the most relaxing place we have ever been to, and a crazy bride doesn’t really fit in paradise.

MARK + TRACEY 3RD AUGUST 2014 – THE PEARL SOUTH PACIFIC RESORT

Mark and I had met through mutual friends while we both lived in Sydney. Not long after we met, Mark moved back up to the Gold Coast. Although we didn’t get together at first we kept in touch. A few years later I contacted him to see how he was going and it turned out that he was in Sydney visiting family. We had a few dates and fell in love pretty quickly! Mark stayed in Sydney for a month or so before returning to the Gold Coast and just before our one year anniversary I moved up to the Gold Coast. I had always dreamed of getting married in Fiji as I have a lot of family there and always wanted them to be a part of our special day. Initially we had looked into local venues here at home and even thought of doing a surprise wedding/engagement party. Fiji wasn’t even on the cards! That was until I found out about a family friend who had been married in Fiji a few months before. After some research I had my heart set. All I had to do was convince Mark, which didn’t take long! Having a holiday with our family and friends along with our wedding seemed like the perfect idea. Not to mention so many beautiful surrounding islands to honeymoon on later too.

THE PLANNING Pacific Harbour has and always will be special to my family. My dad worked there for a few years and still has many friends in the area. My family had also lived there for a few years when I was a baby. We have always stayed at the Pearl when visiting Fiji and found out while planning that Mark and his family had been there many years ago too when Mark was younger. All the planning was done with the help of the wonderful Melina from the Pearl and with the help of Mark, my mum (and family) and my two wonderful sisters. Oh and I can’t forget to thank Pinterest and Bula Bride for endless inspiration!

138 | Bula Bride | #01

THE CEREMONY The Pearl took care of the green archways, palm leaf aisle, beautiful tropical flower arrangements and general set up of the chapel. Everything was luscious, green and tropical. I loved the palm leaves down the aisle. It was all so perfect. My mum and aunty then set up some colourful traditional Fijian mats at the altar, which were sourced by my family in Fiji. Traditional tapa cloth was also used to decorate the signing table and stand that the celebrant used as well as to decorate some of the green arches. We also had the Pearl’s serenaders set up at the side of the chapel and they entertained the guests as they waited for the ceremony to start. They also sang ‘All of me,’ by John Legend as the bridesmaids and I walked down the aisle. It was beautiful.

| 139

140 | Bula Bride | #01

THE ADVICE Enjoy the planning! I found myself stressing a lot and I really didn’t need to. Delegate some of the planning if you can and try not to worry too much about Fiji time. It all works out in the end. And make sure you let hubby have some input, it’s his day too. Mark loved it and came up with some great ideas. Another thing, don’t stress about the weather. A bit of wind or rain won’t ruin your day. There is always a plan B! Most importantly relax and enjoy your big day. Don’t worry too much if a few things don’t go exactly to plan, just remember you are about to marry the man of your dreams in paradise.

MAX + TIREE 16th october 2014 – Tropica island resort We became friends when we were both in Fiji for the Muscat Island regatta in 2007, we both ended up staying in Fiji for around 3 months sailing to different islands and getting a real taste for Fiji lifestyle and falling in love with the gorgeous Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. When we got engaged, Fiji just seemed like the most perfect location to get married, somewhere we both love and as our friends and family would be coming from Australia, England and Uganda, somewhere we could spend a week with them, enjoying a relaxing holiday as well as beautiful wedding. We knew it had to be the Mamanuca Islands, as they are reasonably close to the mainland but still have beautiful water frontage and a relaxed island feel. We chose Tropica for its location – facing into the gorgeous Fijian sunsets; its size – being small it feels quite private; it has different room and bure options; and it’s an adult-only resort.

142 | Bula Bride | #01

| 143

THE LOOK & FEEL Our main requests were for ceremony on the beach by the water, featuring mainly white colour with bright tropical flowers. The reception theme was similar and was set up in the open air under the palm trees on the sand next to the water, surrounded by flares and candles. The whole day was amazing, we had perfect weather, a gorgeous sunset and such a special happy time with our close family and friends. I would say if you asked our guests the highlight would be the fire dancers they were something so special that everyone will remember.

144 | Bula Bride | #01

THE ADVICE We were quite happy to take a hands-off approach and had a very relaxed view on our day, however this does mean that some things may not turn out exactly as you had planned or requested. I think with this sort of destination wedding, sometimes you just need to take that step back relax and realise that while something may not be exactly as you pictured, it is still amazing and try not to let it affect your day.

| 145

THE HIGHLIGHT The whole day was amazing, we had perfect weather, a gorgeous sunset and such a special happy time with our close family and friends. I would say if you asked our guests the highlight would be the fire dancers they were something so special that everyone will remember.

TOM + MELISSA 17th AUGUST 2014 – OUTRIGGER ON THE LAGOON We met in Barcelona while travelling through Europe. We were at a beach party and started talking, and we just clicked from there. I was only travelling for six weeks, so I went back home while Tom continued to travel. We both decided to meet up in the USA a couple of months after I left. Tom had a working visa in the UK, but decided to come home which was great as we both live in Melbourne. We chose Fiji as my parents took my brother and I there often for family holidays. We have wonderful memories of the island. A few years back Tom joined us on a long awaited family holiday back to Fiji and stayed at The Outrigger on the Lagoon. We decided if we were ever to get married, it has to be The Outrigger. The staff are the most genuine, friendliest people! The resort is just divine, really big with lots of activities and restaurants to choose from. I fell in love with their award winning day spa and the chapel is breathtaking!

148 | Bula Bride | #01

| 149

THE LOOK We didn’t want anything too formal, so we chose the theme to be fun and colourful. There were accents of gold sequins, navy, and bright fuchsia. I wore a French lace, fitted dress from Fairytales, Melbourne. It was a backless dress with a beaded back detail. The bridesmaids wore blush sequin and sheer dresses from Dahl NYC. And the fellas wore suits from Gibson with chequered shirts from Conner and bowties and suspenders from etsy. The gorgeous ladies at The Wavelengths salon at the Outrigger did my hair and Leanne from Tokota Hair & Makeup did a great job on our makeup.

150 | Bula Bride | #01

THE STYLING Bouquets were large bunches of bouganvilleas. I wanted a full punch of colour! The boys wore simple greenery. For the reception – gold sequin table runners and pineapples lined the tables, with large, fake grass table numbers. I spray-painted animal figurines gold and used them as place card holders and made my own polka dot napkins. Warm white fairy lights draped the ceiling with clusters of white lanterns, honeycomb fuchsia balls and peach paper fans hung from the ceiling. The backdrop to the room was giant, gold LOVE balloons, although it got very windy and they ended up in a bunch. I made my own seating chart, and we had a polaroid camera for our guest book with lots of props which made great photos.

| 151

THE HIGHLIGHT We hosted a Welcome to Fiji cocktail party a few days before the wedding and it was so much fun! Our guests were so relaxed and were able to get to know each other. Our photographer was there to capture the awesome fun we had. Have faith in the wedding planners in Fiji. I didn’t use an external consultant and I dealt directly with the resort. I was organised in sending them details on how we envisaged the day and it came together perfectly.
