I own Events in the East and we run Norfolk’s largest Pregnancy, Baby & Toddler show, so I hope to see you all at the next one on Sunday 6th April 2014. I thought Norfolk was lacking a free magazine aimed at parents of young children so using the contacts I already have and using a team of good writers & designers we have put together our brand new mag! I really hope you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. The magazine will come out 3 times a year, next one being July and then November. We will also be putting together a new website so that you can also read it online. If you feel you have an interesting feature or story then do get in touch, bumpbabyandtoddler.co.uk

WEEKS 4 TO
D
espite the fact that we had been hoping to have another baby for quite a while, the first glimpse of a positive pregnancy test always comes as a bit of a shock, followed by a rush of nervous excitement. Just to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me, I sent a photo of the test to my husband at work to confirm that it really was positive. This was hardly the most romantic way of sharing the news but it all happened in a bit of a blur. As the news started to sink in over the next few days, my excitement be-
came mingled with anxiety in a way that was different from my last pregnancy. Along with the usual hormone-fuelled mixture of emotions, I began to worry about how my three year old son would feel about having a younger sibling and hoped that having a new baby wouldn’t take anything away from my relationship with him. Exhaustion and nausea really hit me hard this time, particularly between being 5 and 12 weeks pregnant. By mid-afternoon, I was ready to go to sleep but having a young child to look after meant that there was no chance of getting any extra rest this
‘By 12 weeks, things started to look up. I felt brighter and I was happy to have reached that all important milestone.’ time round. I also didn’t realise how much worse catching two colds would make me feel during pregnancy. I still found enough energy to get my old maternity clothes back out of storage and order some new additions, however, as I started to show much earlier this time than I did with my son. By 12 weeks, things started to look up. I felt brighter and I was happy to have reached that all-important milestone. While I still had some anxiety about everything being OK, My scan was just around the corner and I couldn’t wait to see my new baby for the first time.

Q&A
Ask the GP We met up with Norfolk GP, Dr. Ames, to talk about coping with Hay Fever in pregnancy. With the hay fever season just beginning, pregnant women are starting to look for safe ways of managing their symptoms.
Feature Hayley Ames Images Shutterstock
Q: ARE HAY FEVER MEDICATIONS SAFE TO TAKE IN PREGNANCY, INCLUDING THOSE AVAILABLE ON THE SHELF WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION? A: As with everything in pregnancy, it is best to be as conservative as possible when treating any condition to avoid any potential harm to your baby. Topical forms of medication such as steroid nasal sprays and antihistamine eye drops are occasionally prescribed by a GP if your symptoms are severe. They can treat symptoms such as runny nose and itchy eyes. However, you should always consult your GP or a pharmacist who will assess your individual circumstances before taking any hay fever medication. Antihistamine tablets, including the hay fever tablets that you often find on a
chemist or supermarket shelf, should be avoided in pregnancy. While a GP may prescribe specific types of antihistamines in severe cases, other types are deemed unsafe for use by pregnant women. Q: ARE THERE ANY NON-MEDICAL WAYS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN TO TREAT HAY FEVER SYMPTOMS? A: There are a number of different ways in which pregnant women can reduce the symptoms of hay fever without the need for medication. The main way of doing this is to reduce your exposure to pollen. Think about staying indoors at points of the day when pollen levels are highest and keep your windows shut. It is also a good idea to try and reduce the amount of pollen on your clothes and bed sheets by washing them regularly and avoiding drying them outside. Other tips include washing your face and hands regularly to remove any pollen and applying Vaseline inside your nostrils to catch any pollen before you breathe it in.

The Four B’s of
Healthy Finger
Foods
Once your baby has mastered the art of eating finger foods it is a good idea to introduce them to a range of different tastes and textures to promote a varied diet. he nutritional value of foods also plays an important role in deciding which foods are best for your baby. We’ve rounded up some of the top finger foods to help your child explore new sensations as well as keeping them healthy and bursting with energy.
As the carbohydrates in bananas release energy gradually, this finger food will keep energy levels steady. The high fibre content also helps bananas to maintain a healthy digestive system. BROCCOLI Chunks of broccoli, steamed to make them soft and easy to chew, are full of vitamin C which helps to promote healthy cells and keep your baby’s immune system working effectively. In addition, broccoli provides babies with a source of iron and potassium as well as plenty of fibre to keep their digestive tract healthy.
BLUEBERRIES While high levels of antioxidants are often seen as the major nutritional benefit of eating blueberries, they also provide your baby with a good source of vitamin C and vitamin K. Blueberries are a good choice for babies who have developed their pincer grip and can even help to promote healthy brain and eye develop- BUTTERNUT SQUASH Slices or chunks of cooked butternut ment. squash are easy for babies to pick up and chew and they also taste great. Pregnancy & Exercise IMPROVE SLEEP, BOOST ENERGY LEVELS & KEEP FIT!
It is important to look after your health during pregnancy and one way to do this is through safe levels of exercise.
A
s well as keeping us fit and healthy, exercise can help to control the amount of weight we gain throughout pregnancy and reduce the time it takes for us to return to our pre-pregnancy figures after giving birth.
Feature Hayley Ames Images Shutterstock
Other benefits of exercise include improved sleep and a boost in energy levels which tend to dwindle when we are pregnant. Exercise plays an important part in helping to strengthen the body in preparation for giving birth while fitness can help us to cope with labour. Safety is a major consideration when embarking on an exercise program during pregnancy and
women who have experienced complications in their pregnancy or have any other concerns about how much exercise is safe for them should get advice from their midwife or GP. For many pregnant women, exercising gently a few times a week, for up to half an hour at a time, will help to maintain their fitness levels. However, anyone who was not used to regular exercise before pregnancy should ease into a new fitness routine slowly and gradually. Low-impact forms of exercise such as walking and swimming provide good ways to maintain fitness during pregnancy. Exercise should not be strenuous and it is important to
stop if you begin to feel dizzy, breathless or you experience any other type of discomfort. Some gyms have qualified instructors that offer fitness classes designed specifically for mums-to-be but other classes, especially those that are strenuous and feature sharp, sudden movements, should be avoided. It is also a good idea to avoid exercise during very hot weather as this can increase your risk of becoming dehydrated. As dehydration can be a serious problem for pregnant women, it is sensible to drink plenty of water when you exercise.

Tradit The Return of
s e m a Baby N S
ome of the highest ranking names in the lists of most popular baby names currently include Jack, Harry and Charlie for boys and Lily, Amelia and Ava for girls. We look at some of the reasons why so many parents are choosing baby names with an air of vintage chic. One reason for people choosing to give their baby names that were popular in their grandparents’ generation is that they want to name their child after family members that they have been close to and that have had a strong influence on their lives. In the past, people
also tended to name their children after a parent to keep family traditions alive. However, traditional names are no longer used for family reasons alone as many people are choosing names with no family connections whatsoever, purely on their own merits. As traditional names such as George and Lily became out of fashion for such a long period of time, they sound fresh again in their revival. Glamorous films and TV programmes that have been popular recently, including The Great Gatsby and Downton Abbey, may also have an influence on bringing retro
names back into fashion. The peak in popularity of traditional baby names may be a temporary one, like many of the previous baby name trends. However, looking back through generations of family members and even names of major historical figures demonstrates how the names have stood the test of time in the past. Being able to associate your baby’s name with vintage stars of the silver screen and choose a name that has a meaning connected to it are just some of the other qualities that are leading parents to choose names that have been forgotten for generations.

Birthday Celebrations Celebrate your little one’s first birthday
B
abies in the United States were the first to experience the cake smash phenomenon which has now spread to a number of countries around the world, including the UK and Australia. The traditional purpose of a cake smash was to create a fun setting for a photo shoot, producing photos that would be used on invitations for the child’s
first birthday party. Today, however, many parents celebrate their little one’s first birthday with a cake smash simply because getting messy is great fun for the child and the parents get to keep some fantastic photos. In some cases, parents choose to create a cake smash at home and take pictures themselves to reduce costs. Cake smashes can also be incorporated
into a birthday party where other children, friends and family can share the event. However, if you are looking for quality photos to keep forever, it is a good idea to use a professional photographer. A number of photographers specialise in cake smash photos and use their experience to capture some of the most precious moments. Taking your child to a photogra-

pher’s studio also means that the perfect backdrop will be ready and waiting for you and it keeps most of the mess away from your home! One of the most important decisions involved in organising your child’s cake smash is choosing the cake. It will be a major focus in the photographs so it has to look good and be easy for your child to get stuck in to. Bakeries and local birthday cake companies offer ready-made cakes that look perfect and are ideal for children to smash. However, if you are looking to cut costs or you just can’t bear to see a professional cake smashed into a pulp, you could try baking your own cake. Giant cupcake moulds can help to bake a great cake smash cake that looks cute and is made from a soft sponge that can be smashed easily. Baking your own giant cupcake also gives you
the chance to choose your own decorations and add a more personal touch to the photos. Your child’s outfit is another important consideration when you are planning a cake smash. Many parents choose to dress their child in nothing but their nappy to allow them to cover themselves in cake without ruining their clothes in the process. Parents of little girls can create cute photos by placing a tutu over the baby’s nappy. Those who choose to dress their little ones in a full outfit for their cake smash session (and don’t
mind that the clothes may be stained beyond repair) should consider colour coordinating the outfit and accessories with the colour of the cake. If your cake smash session is taking place in a photography studio, make sure that you bring a clean change of clothes for your child and wipes to help with any last remainders of cake after the clean-up session. For those parents who create the own cake smash at home, it can be a good idea to take the photos outside during the summer. If this is not an option, place plenty of plastic sheets over anything that could stain before you begin and have a warm bath and towel waiting for your child as soon as the session is over.
Helping Your Baby
Cope with Colic W
hile the exact cause of colic is not fully understood, colicky babies tend to demonstrate tummy discomfort by having a hard abdomen, pulling their legs upwards and passing wind frequently. The symptoms of colic can lead to extended periods of crying, night or day, and soothing a baby with colic can be challenging. However, there a number of useful techniques that focus on soothing the problem area as well as comforting your baby. Providing your baby with security and comfort is an essential part of help-
ing them cope with colic symptoms. Walk around with your baby held in your arms or in a sling to help them feel safe and secure with you while the movement helps to soothe them. For some babies, a rocking or vibrating chair also works well while others prefer the secure feeling of being swaddled. If your baby is suffering from wind, gently rubbing their abdomen can help to make them feel more comfortable. Alternatively, laying a baby on his tummy can also help to ease his distress. Babies should be well supported and held with their abdomen lying across a parent’s forearm,
with their head held in the palm of your hand, or lying with a cushion under their tummy with their head supported and positioned a way that allows them to breathe easily. Finally, try to comfort a colicky baby with soothing sounds by attaching a musical light to the crib or by singing softly to them. Soothing music is even more effective when combined with rocking. Most babies soon grow out of colic by themselves. Talk to your health visitor or GP if you are concerned about the severity or your baby’s symptoms or the length of time that they have had them for.

ANSWERS FOR YOU ALL!
By Renee, Norwich Sling Library
Baby Wearing Wearing your child in a sling or carrier
is as old as man itself!
B
eing carried, whether in arms or in a baby carrier, is fundamentally the most effective way to keep a baby/child happy whilst giving the parent a sense of 2 handed freedom. Let’s face it, babies are a handful - literally, so finding a way to ease this burden as well as doing something that is biologically what nature intended is going to be good all round.
Feature Renee, Norwich Sling Library Images Shutterstock
Studies show that babies who are carried cry 43% less than their prammed counterparts, gain muscle control faster and learn quicker. This is mostly due to the time they spend in a calm, alert state which is conducive to learning. Nature intended babies to be carried, the C shape of their immature body that curls round their mother’s breasts, their back which has a higher percentage of fat, (suggesting that this was an evolutionary way of conserving heat in an infant) and a mother’s ability to regulate their baby’s temperature subconsciously via her breasts is truly amazing. Watch your newborn bring their little knees up
high to their chest when you hold them to you, this allows you to get them into the most optimum position easily and will be beneficial in their spine and hip development as well as being biologically sound. If science isn’t what sways you, then perhaps the huge amount of beautiful wraps and carriers available will? For the price of one moderately priced pram you could have as many as 5 different slings to suit every need or even more, with no cumbersome pram to squeeze onto the bus or into a shop doorway. Of course babywearing doesn’t mean you have to give up your pram, it can be used as an effective additional tool when your baby doesn’t want to be put down, or is upset and unsettled due to colic or teething. Unsure of what sling or carrier that would work for you? Why not pop along to one of the UK’s sling libraries. Sling Libraries offer peer to peer support and advice about babywearing as well as hiring slings, so a parent can see what kind would suit them and their child best.

hen rainy days limit your options of things to do, bring out the Easter craft box and get creative together. You can collect and prepare craft materials in advance, including old magazines, boxes, used wrapping paper and cards. Not only is this a great activity on a budget, but it also gives you the perfect opportunity to teach children about recycling. Craft and toy shops also supply a variety other materials such as sequins, glitter and feathers that can be added to your supplies.
EGG PAINTING Prepare some hard boiled eggs for your children to paint with a brush, sponge of their fingers. Encourage them to explore colour and texture by sticking decorations onto their painted eggs. Create an Easter display with the finished eggs so that they can show off their achievements. EASTER BONNETS Let your children demonstrate their artistic flair and love of dressing up by making Easter bonnets. While ready-to-decorate straw hats can be found in craft shops, any pre-loved hat from the wardrobe or charity shop will work just
as well. Decorate the hats by sticking on shapes, ribbons, glitter or even daffodils from the garden if you have them. MASKS Decorate a paper plate or cut out a piece of coloured card to create an Easter bunny, chick or lamb mask. Add texture with a collage technique by adding cotton wool and feathers along with ears, whiskers or a beak. EASTER BASKET Add one or two card or ribbon handles to an old box, making sure that it doesn’t spill its contents when picked up. Next, cover the box in woven strips of coloured paper or magazine strips to create a colourful basket. Use to finished product for your children to collect eggs in an Easter egg hunt.

M
any parents find that the usual excitement and anticipation of having a new baby can be accompanied with other feelings, including concern about how your older child will react to having a new sibling. Some people can also experience occasional feelings of guilt as they worry that having a new baby will mean that they get to give their older child less attention. When a new baby arrives, many older siblings can begin to feel jealous of the love and attention that they see their parents giving to another child for
the first time in their lives. Jealousy can cause changes in a child’s behaviour as they attempt to regain attention and some children can even try to get attention by acting like a baby themselves. However, understanding your child’s feelings and making sure that they feel included will help them to accept their new sibling and the changes that they bring. Eventually, your child is likely to see their younger brother or sister as an asset and their best playmate. We spoke to second-time mum Lucy about the challenges she faced when her youngest child was born and the advice that she

age to fit in a dessert, you should try the Warm Chocolate Brownie and Icecream, absolutely delicious! Children’s menu was good, similar to the adults menu, so they don’t feel like they are missing out. Conclusion: Fantastic for stopping off during a day of shopping. Children will love putting money in the mini Juke Boxes on the tables (all money goes to charity) and Parents will love the nostalgic feel of this American Style diner whilst taking a well earned break.
Outside Chapelfield Shopping Mall Buggy friendly: Yes it has lots of space and room to park your buggy under the stairs. Highchairs: Yes Baby change: Yes on the ground floor. Staff: Very friendly and attentive. Extras: We were provided with colouring books, crayons, reading books, balloons & more! Food: Lots of variety and a good children’s menu. The food was very quick to arrive and the portions were just right. We had lots to choose from such as burgers, Mexican, chicken & ribs, sal-
ads and more. The desserts were yummy and you must try the Tiramisu ice cream sundae! The children enjoyed themselves and the staff were happy for them to walk about and chat to the barman (Sorry barman!). Conclusion: If you are looking for a family friendly restaurant in Norwich city centre then you cannot go wrong with Giraffe. The food is tasty, staff are lovely and you will be well looked after. Giraffe would also be a great choice for a “date night” (if you get the chance!).

Rainy Day Activities With Children Under Five
A
pril showers may stop us from doing many of the outdoor activities that kids love but, luckily, Norfolk also has a fantastic variety of indoor attractions that are fun, educational and provide the perfect setting to make happy memories with the children.

SOFT PLAY Dedicated soft play centres can be found throughout the region and are some of the best places to take the kids to on a rainy day. Indoor play centres allow children to burn off energy and keep fit, whatever the weather. Many centres sell hot drinks and snacks for parents and can be the ideal place to meet with friends and catch up while the little ones play together.
School holidays can give us a great opportunity to spend more time with the children, but spending too much time at home can lead to restlessness. MUSEUMS Many Norfolk museums offer attractions for visitors of all ages, including interactive exhibitions that young children can really get to grips with. Visit the Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service website to find your nearest museums and research what is available for young children, including visiting exhibitions and entertainment. KIDS’ CINEMA Many cinemas in Norfolk offer children’s film screening during weekends and school holidays. Ticket prices for children
and accompanying adults can be as low as around £1 each. Check your local cinema listings to check the times that these bargain screenings are available. SWIMMING POOLS Swimming pools are another perfect place for young children to get exercise when it is raining outside. Your local pool will be able to provide details of any classes or sessions that are specifically aimed at young children. Some pools, however, have baby pools and areas that are ideal for young children to use throughout their opening hours.

Q&A
Mumpreneur Corner For this issue we interviewed.
W
hen a woman falls pregnant she begins to realise that her life will never be the same again! Not only will her body change but suddenly she goes from working 9-5 in a steady job to being at home with the kiddies. For some this is perfect and they choose to be a stay at home mum (which is perfectly fine!) but the growing trend is for mums to start up their own business from home……and so the “Mumpreneur” was born!
QUESTION: HI CHARLENE THANKS FOR TALKING TO US TODAY. ELIZABETH SMITH’S GUIDE TO
Beauty Treatments & Me Time W
hen you become pregnant you have no idea how much your life will change. All your friends tell you that you will never sleep again or have 2 minutes to yourself. I promise it’s not that bad and the joys of children far outweigh the lack of sleep!
Although everything is about the babies I strongly believe you still need a little ‘me time’ and to feel good about yourself. It’s all too easy for you to forget about yourself. After a while you come to accept that most of your tops end up with food or snot on them within 5
minutes of wearing them. My top tip is to wear your dressing gown over the top of your clothes up until leaving the house. At least once a month I advise you to have some time just for you to recharge the batteries and don’t feel guilty about it! If you don’t you will end up burning out and take longer to recover. At my beauty salon in Norwich I concentrate on doing low maintenance treatments, which save you time and last a good amount of time. The eyelash extensions are a huge passion of mine and I am
‘These really do make you feel like a million dollars I promise and you get to have a rest while I am applying them.’ always studying on how to create the perfect look. The semi-permanent eyelash extensions are individually bonded one by one to your natural lashes, so when you lose one natural lash it will only have one extension on it. These need infills every 3 weeks for the new natural lashes growing through. These are fab for busy Mums who have no idea how to apply make-up in the morning. You wake up looking like you have perfect mascara on without the stress of applying it in the car mirror! These really do make you feel like a million dollars I promise and you get to have a rest while I am applying them. I have mine quite short and full, so perfect for everyday without the drag queen look at the school gate.
