The Innate Objective of Architecture A building becomes architecture when it aims to surpass the programmatic constraints and address symbolic notions of the building and its purpose.
01
VICTORIA PARK LEARNING CENTER Early Childhood Development Center
Spring 2017 Design Studio
A suburban neighborhood in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, FL., Victoria Park is situated at the corner of North Federal Highway and Northeast 2nd Street. The neighborhood lacks daycare and learning center facilities to support the existing elementary schools and private Catholic schools in the 10 mile radius. The proposed learning center will support children age of pre-k through 10 to help them learn social and motor skills, as well as provide supplemental education. The building form is carved out of a simple primary volume, which then is diassembled into a collage of more simplified rectangular forms that create an undulating facade. The deep void spaces in between the solid volumes allow daylight to penetrate to the interior core of the building, as well as provide sheltered outdoor spaces.

EFFICIENCY AND FUNCTIONALITY The programming needs of the learning center support a wide array of learning styles, while the minimal footprint with sustainable energy sources keep the building efficient and eco-friendly.

LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO Opera House
Spring 2019 Design Studio
Founded in 1954, Lyric Opera of Chicago has been providing and sharing transformational and revelatory power of opera to the city of Chicago. The current building housing Lyric Opera is simply too large to provide a resonable number of seats within an acceptable distance to the stage for good acoustics. Relocating to a new opera house located at the south of Gateway Park on the west end of the historic Navy Pier is proposed in order to improve patronage satisfaction. The proposed opera house includes increased seat count, traffic and visibility to the opera house, and enhanced acoustical properties. The new design provides a 270-degree view of the site, from Navy Pier to the Millennium Park. The classic horseshoe-shaped theater is encased in a three-dimensional manifestiona of a grid system extracted from the Burnham Plan for the city of Chicago.

AESTHETICS AND ENERGY PERFORMANCE The horizontal louvers and vertical fins emulate a pipe organ, blocking out direct summer daylight and allowing in direct winter daylight for thermal comfort and increased energy efficiency.

Design Build Study
Spring 2018 Design Build Studio
The aim of this design build project is proved through the design process, rather than a result of it. It takes a banal space and pervasive material, transforming them into an architectural space. The process of interrelated steps stitch togther a logic structure based on an imposed grid and invented rules. Physical elements are created through this same system; figures and plans emerge from the geometric play. The process of how space is transformed directly connected to the geometric construction which underlies each subsequent process from site placement to construction. The unique joinery system was developed in order to eliminate the use of traditional adhesives and methods of construction, following the simplistic nature of the whole design which is comprised of the most intrinsic detailings.

PART 1: DESIGN COMPOSITION The geometric design came about based on invented rules deducted from the existing grid of the build site. Grasshopper and Rhino were used to formulate the rules and the ultimate design.

PART 2: CONSTRUCTION The construction phase was composed of cutting out the OSB boards with a CNC machine, experimenting with the joinery system, testing the construction of different shapes needed for the design, and constructing the project on site.

Architecture is ultimately rooted in the built artifect, which physically affirms artistic intent as a result of the design.

REVIVING FORGOTTEN INDEPENDENCE Master Planning & Socio-economic Housing
Spring 2020 Graduate Design Studio Team: Anastasia Popova & Melissa Watson
The sharing economy is a form of economic exchange that utilizes flexible platforms allowing an exchange of goods and services. The ever expanding technology allowed the sharing economy to take on new forms and be readily accessible to people. As a result, the concept of ownership started to shift from having a distinct division between private and public ownership to overlapping with one another. Reviving Forgotten Independence is a team semester project exploring the relationship among the sharing economy, shifting perceptions of ownership, and built environments. 1. A larger scale master planning of the Independence Avenue Business District in Kansas City comprised of urban infill, densification of residential zones, and streetscape improvements. 2. A smaller scale housing project focusing on how architecture could embrace the sharing economy

21 REVIVING FORGOTTE INDEPENDENCE
PART 1: MASTER PLAN | URBAN INFILL Independence Avenue is a historic Kansas City area with approximately 19,600 vehicles passing through daily, making it a heavily trafficked corridor. Narrowing our focus to the portion of Independence Avenue between Paseo Ave. and Chestnut Trafficway, two major improvements in need were identified: streetscape and fragmentation.

PART 2: HOUSING DEVELOPMENT The site across the street from KCU Campus was selected for the new housing development in efforts to densify residential zones in the district. With a new typology of housing and disctinct architectural language, the new housing development aims to serve as the gateway landmark for the district, as well as provide a mixed-income housing that encourages the shared economic activities among the residents.

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS Renovation
Bob Young Football Stadium
The University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota was looking to renovate their football stadium’s suite level and build out the currently empty second level. I participated in space planning and reconfiguring the suite level and providing schematic renderings. The existing suite level lacks the central gathering space for hosting various events catering to their donors, visitors, and staff. The floor is currently infilled, which limits the amount of stacked seating for each VIP suite and coaches’ rooms. The suite level also lacked back-of-the-house functions and restrooms. By reconfiguring the entire floor, I was able to increase the sizes of the suites and the coaches’ rooms as well as the central open area, and help in meeting updated building codes.

MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY Master Planning
Sports Complex
MidAmerica Nazarene University is a private Christian university located in Olathe, Kansas. Their current sports complex situated on the Northeast side of the campus lacks essential amenities, adequate seating for home and visiting guests, and the field conditions are not ideal. Our company was tasked with providing a master plan, new sports fields, and track, as well as new building options to serve as grandstands, locker rooms, and press boxes. I was tasked with master planning and reconfiguring the field locations to maximize efficiency, take advantage of the site’s unique grading, planning for future expansions. as well as providing renderings.
