In this course students explore the history of museum education, learn how to engage museum visitors, and examine the vast components that must come together to form engaging educational programming within museums.
Students will create a community of learning to examine issues such as what motivates people to go to museums and how can museums e ectively serve learners of all ages and learning styles.
roughout the course, the question, “What does learning look like in the museum?” will be asked, and real-world assignments will encourage students to facilitate meaningful experiences for themselves as well as museum guests.

American Material Culture examines the ways in which history museums, historic house museums and historic villages utilize historic buildings and other artifacts to tell the stories of American history.

Museums to be considered include Plimoth Plantation, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Monticello, Independence National Historical Park, Drayton Hall and the Aiken-Rhett House in Charleston, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

Program Information
UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR & MINOR
e Department of Museum Studies o ers students three courses of undergraduate study: a BA in Museum Studies, a Minor in Museum Studies, or a Minor in Informal Education. Students who earn the Minor in Informal Education complete coursework in the Department of Museum Studies and the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
e undergraduate major in Museum Studies prepares students for careers in the museum profession, cultural organizations, and related non-pro t institutions. e Bachelor of Arts in Museum Studies combines coursework in the eld as well as a minor in a cognate eld. Students who have declared the Museum Studies major may choose to apply to the joint BA/MA in Museum Studies.

For undergraduate majors in American Studies, Anthropology, Art and Art History, Journalism, or History who decide that they wish to apply their undergraduate knowledge to work in museums, the department o ers a joint bachelor and master degree. Students should apply for the graduate program in their junior year and can take one undergraduate course, MST 4300, and three graduate courses, MST 5304, 5309, and 5311, during their senior year. Having completed the BA, they can graduate after one additional year of study. Students are required to meet all requirements for the BA in their undergraduate major for a total of 124 credit hours.
