carl liu

An icon of design in both mainland China and Taiwan, Carl Liu lives by design that is as functional as it is aesthetically beautiful. An industrial designer by training, Carl’s products are defined by his curiosity for problem-solving. Says Carl, “Some designers aim to be famous. I just want to create truly timeless, quality products. It’s a never-ending learning process. Everyone today is in a rush. But good design cannot be rushed. It takes patience, learning.” Two decades of designing are testament to his dedication to the process of design.

shanghai breeze fan

Featuring 28 of Shanghai’s most iconic buildings on each hand-cut, sandalwood blade, the Shanghai Breeze Fan artfully opens to represent China’s modernization over the past two decades. The fan represents New China through an ancient aesthetic; in Liu’s words, “The fan is something solid from the past to hold on to, at the same time reflecting the progress that has taken place in the last ten years in China.”

sansa

An audacious blend of entrepreneurial zeal and Chinese artistry, David Jia is fast driving Sansa to become one of China’s foremost design brands, representing a brilliant blend of Chinese philosophy and modern design. As founder and creative director of China’s largest design firm, LKK Design, David and his talented team founded Sansa to become China’s leading design brand and an international first: Designed by China. Sansa is China’s first design company to win the Red Dot, IF, and IDEA design awards in 2008. Ever since, the brand has continued winning international and domestic acclaim for its stunning designs.

Experience a serenity rarely found in the fast-growing cities of modern China. The Sansa team spent months experimenting with the movement of smoke along the stones to find a visual depiction of true peace and happiness as found in nature. The end design allows incense to billow downwards softly down the side of the mountain when lit. Made from black goldstone polished with titanium alloy.

latitude 22N

The story of Latitude22N starts with artisan couple Julie and Jesse Mclin, whose fateful encounter at a ceramics kiln led to a true love story. The two debuted their first porcelain collection at their wedding. The pieces were so popular among their guests that they launched Latitude22N, now one of Hong Kong’s leading porcelain designer brands. Julie and Jesse have proven growing worldwide demand for modern Asian design, receiving commissions from many clients including the W hotel and Standard Chartered Private Banking. In 2011, Latitude22N won both the DESIGN FOR ASIA award for The Night Market collection as well as the 40 Under 40 Perspective Magazine award.

Designed in Hong Kong by artisans Julie & Jesse of Latitude22N, each celadon-glazed piece is completely unique. Rather than mass-producing the collection, Latitude22N chose to have each piece hand-carved in a family-run workshop in Jingdezhen, China. The simple flourishes and elegant celadon glaze, as well as the depictions of humans’ interaction with nature, are inspired by Song dynasty art.

zhoujie zhang

It’s near impossible to imagine that these futuristic designs came from a boy trained in classical arts in rural village of Ningbo, China. Growing up, Zhoujie says, “I had this feeling that there were unknown forms of artistic expression beyond my village. His graduation collection at St. Martin’s College of Art and Design was so well-received internationally that he has since become heralded in mainland China as a design prodigy. Today Zhoujie and his team in Shanghai create stunning hand-welded steel works using digital imaging.

sozen

Industrial design professor turned entrepreneur, Junjie Zhang, explains the inspiration behind Sozen from the time he took students to the oldest bamboo villages in Shenzhou. “These were some of the wealthiest rural villages in the 70s and 80s, with master arts craftsmen that had been commissioned by Deng Xiaoping and other high-ranking officials. But in the 90s, times changed. When my students and I went, we found most of the craftsmen were over 60, the masters were in their 70s and 80s. They had very few orders, just woven baskets for some European clients, bamboo figures for tourist shops. I had such a feeling of loss for these valued artisan skills of the past. We founded SOZEN to find a way to integrate traditional crafts with modern design.

After a visit with his students to the historical bamboo-weaving village of Zhejiang in Shanzhou, Sozen founder Junjie Zhang was inspired to create modern bamboo designs. “We like to imagine how many villages, artisans, we could support if we could revitalize this art-form. So we constantly look for creative ways to integrate bamboo into products in our daily lives.” With the Basket Vase, he continues on with this mission. The end product of these villagers’ weaving expertise and Junjie’s design is a floating bamboo cloud surrounding an internal ceramic vase, nature interwoven into art with the utmost craftsmanship.
