For me, having guests to stay generally means turning to my favourite quick fixes. 1) Declutter: it’s amazing what a difference a cleared surface or two can make! 2) Clean: shiny shelves and floors make the whole place feel fresh. 3) Paint: a quick whizz around the walls with a brush and a match pot works wonders.

Spread a soil wetter over your lawn and garden beds to help improve water penetration, increase watering efficiency and minimise run-off and wastage.

Plant beans, chillies, eggplant, silverbeet, tomatoes or zucchinis now. Feed with a liquid fertiliser throughout the season to boost plant growth and productivity.

Looking for the perfect present? Pair a pretty terrazzo pot with an indoor plant and suitable fertiliser for a gift that will last and last.

Mow lawns in the cool of the day and avoid removing more than one-third of leaf blades. This will help reduce moisture stress and allow your lawn to recover. Perfume your garden by planting gardenias. The white blooms have a gorgeous fragrance and can be picked and enjoyed indoors, too. Choose a spot in full sun with well-draining soil. ‘Florida’ is the most popular variety.

The sight and sound of water can instantly make a space feel cooler. Consider 5 installing a bird bath, pond or water feature in your garden or courtyard. Mulch like mad! Spread a layer of organic mulch over your garden beds to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

A fantastic spinach substitute, silverbeet is easy to grow, with a long harvest window.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
