SHED TO CHATEAU

Editor’s letter Welcome!

This time last year we were hoping for better things in 2021... well, that didn’t quite work out as planned. Whatever else is in store in 2022, after seeing the transformations wrought on a plain timber shed (page 12) I’ve decided I need a shed in my life. However, I’m just not sure what to go for. As I like to get out in the garden, a potting shed would probably be my first pick, but who wouldn’t love a me-time retreat, or a quiet place to WFH away from the hustle and bustle of the house? Choices, choices... We also have inspiration for other big projects – an outdoor kitchen must be high on the list for keen entertainers (page 47), while a cute makeover on a basic balcony (page 22) shows just what you can do with a few stylish and well-chosen buys.

Battery recycling

Bunnings is now collecting household and power tool batteries for recycling at every store across Australia. The national battery recycling program will make battery recycling even easier for retail and trade customers and is expected to recycle over 240,000kgs of batteries in the first year. Wherever you are, you’ll always have a drop-off site close by. More details at bunnings. com.au/about-us/sustainability. LUXE FOR LESS

Tiles turned into side tables is a DIY trend we can’t get enough of – and a great way to get the look of luxury products into your home. This simple yet stylish table was made by Bunnings Workshop member Samantha, from Tasmania. After spotting a large marble-look paver in her local Bunnings garden section, Samantha went straight to the furniture hardware aisle to give the paver new purpose. She secured hairpin legs to the underside of the paver using Selleys ‘Hold Up’ glue, then left it to dry for 24 hours. If travertine is more your style, flip to page 24 to see how we used it in a petite balcony transformation.

Lightly prune roses now to encourage a second flush of blooms in autumn.

Trim shrubs 1lightly all over, deadhead old blooms and remove dead or diseased wood. Give them a feed with a rose fertiliser and mulch well.

It may be the work of lawn pests like curl grub or armyworm. Treat them quickly with a specialist product before they ruin the whole lawn.

Before you go away, put your indoor plants in the bath or shower and give them a good drink on the day you leave. Tiles have a cooling effect, so they may not dry out as fast.

3

If a heatwave is forecast, water potted plants and garden beds early in the morning with diluted seaweed. This helps plants cope better with heat stress. In the vegie garden, there’s still time to plant beans, Chinese cabbage, silverbeet, spring onion and zucchini. Improve the soil with organic matter and mulch well. 4 For the perfect feature tree, try a crepe myrtle. They’re in full flower now, so visit the nursery in store and choose your favourite. See below for more options!

If you’re tired of soil or mulch spilling onto the lawn or driveway, use garden edging to separate the areas. This will help to give them definition, too.

Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
