As we head into autumn, the outlook for home interiors is warm, with amber, saffron and terracotta hues cosying up to rich berry and chocolate. Our decorating shoot shows how to turn the dial in a flash with cushions, plants and pots – and, most importantly, lighting choices. While soft furnishings and paint are proven room transformers, lamps are a game changer for shifting the mood, indoors and out.

A warm LED globe is essential for golden light, bringing softness and ambience to living spaces. You can also have fun with lamp bases and shades. Keep an eye out for second-hand pieces and consider upcycling a base or shade you already have, or personalising an affordable off-the-shelf purchase. Our DIY projects offer plenty of ways to put your stamp on a lamp, or rig up temporary outdoor lighting. Colourful pots and foliage plants also come into their own during the cooler months, bringing instant personality to dull spaces (don’t miss our autumn garden planner for timely tips).

Up north, long evenings outdoors are a year-round affair and one savvy Sunshine Coast couple has transformed a tired cottage into a lifestyle-plus haven (page 22), full of inspiring DIYs including a guest room beauty bar (page 66). Pet owners will love our grooming tips for shedding dogs. And we have all the latest on assisted living home design. Enjoy!

PLANT PARENT

Fine Phillie

‘Cherry Red’ Plant name: Phillie Plant age: Approximately seven years old Plant parent: Garry Climate: A covered breezeway, at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. It was outside under a shady tree, but didn’t do well there as it doesn’t seem to like any sun at all. Phillie now has pride of place near the front door – better for its wellbeing, and where it’s noticed by visitors! Where did it come from? I spotted Phillie at Bunnings when it was just a single leaf in a pot on clearance.

Essential care: A weekly drink of water, supplemented by a bi-monthly dose of Seasol.

Beauty treatment: A fortnightly misting of water. For special occasions, I polish the leaves with white oil on a cloth, to make them look and feel luxurious.

Best feature: Beautiful glossy leaves which initially appear in a deep cherry-red colour (hence its official name).

IN THE GARDEN March

Early autumn is a time for prepping, planting and patching

Rake up fallen leaves to turn into leaf mould, a rich, crumbly soil conditioner. Pile leaves into a wire cage or hessian bag, moisten and turn occasionally to speed up decomposition. It will be ready to use in six to 12 months.

Plant up your autumn vegie patch with beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, parsnip and silverbeet. In tropical zones, you can also plant chilli, sweet corn, tomato and zucchini.

Put in evergreen shrubs or trees now to give them time to establish before the cooler weather arrives. Improve the soil by adding compost or aged manure before planting.

After applying

If you love the scent of sweet peas in spring, sow seeds around St Patrick’s Day, March 17. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and provide a trellis for support. In warm areas, hold off sowing sweet peas until April.

Bare spots in the lawn? Now’s the perfect time to fill them in. Spread lawn seed evenly across the bare patches and lightly rake the soil to cover the seeds. Water regularly to keep the area consistently moist.

BEAUT BULBS

Get planting now for a glorious spring flower show

Ranunculus

The rosette-like blooms are available in a wide range of colours and make excellent cut flowers, often lasting a week or more with proper care.

Hyacinth

A deliciously fragrant bulb with dense upright spikes of tubular flowers in shades of blue, pink, purple or white. Plant in garden beds, pots or even a glass vase.

Allium

These highly ornamental bulbs have striking spherical heads perched atop tall, slender stems, great for adding height and drama to garden beds.

DIY WALL SCONCES

To make these hessian lights, start with a 30cm plastic terracotta saucer with 5cm straight sides and no lip. Use outdoor mounting tape to attach a batterypowered remote-control outdoor puck light centred on the inside. Cut a square of hessian at least 40cm x 40cm, centre it over the saucer, then push a 25.4cm bamboo ring onto the saucer to hold the hessian in place, making sure it is taut. Secure hessian to the saucer back using a hot-glue gun; trim excess. Attach a 25cm round MDF placemat to saucer back with hot glue; leave to set. Use heavyduty outdoor tape to attach the light to the wall. See opposite for materials.

Keep in mind

■ Bring rug and DIY lighting projects inside out of the weather when not in use.

■ When using a hot-glue gun, wear eye protection and a mask, work in a well-ventilated area, then place the appliance on its stand after use and allow it to cool down before storage. Do not leave unattended while in use or directly after use.

DIY BASKET SCONCES

To make two sconces, cut a 23cm x 22cm woven planter in half vertically using large, sharp scissors and remove plastic lining. Position basket halves on a 915mm x 75mm x 3mm hobby wood sheet with the bases flush with a long edge and mark around baskets using pencil. Cut wood with large, sharp scissors; sand cut edges. Apply hot glue to sides and tops of hobby wood pieces and position basket halves on top; leave to set. Use outdoor mounting tabs to attach a battery-powered remote-control outdoor puck light inside the basket base (which will become the sconce top). Attach heavyduty outdoor tape to the hobby wood sconce backing to mount, upturned, on the wall. See left for materials. ●

Meet the family

Jo, a journalist and TV news presenter, and her husband John, a carpenter, enjoy weekends at their renovated 1980s bungalow in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and also rent it to guests @havanahouse_montville

WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT September 2023

WHAT THEY DID

Everything but the slab, roof and external walls was demolished, with the layout revised to allow for more bedrooms. The large gardens were overhauled with earthworks and landscaping.

FAVOURITE BUY

“The interior colour palette was inspired by cement-look side tables in a soft blush tone that I found at Bunnings,” says Jo.

James Hardie ‘Linea’ weatherboards add character and holiday vibes to the exterior

Ever since they met in their early twenties, Jo and John have enjoyed a shared passion for home improvement.

“Our very first place together was a little house in Townsville that was the worst in the street,” says Jo. “We worked on it every weekend for eight months and from then on we were hooked on renovating.”

For Jo, a journalist, and John, a carpenter by trade, the reno

journey is a team effort that plays to their combined creative and practical skills, to transform a home aesthetically and functionally.

A NEW CHALLENGE

to rent out to guests, in 2023 the couple snapped up a neglected concrete-block bungalow. “We bought the cheapest house in the area at the time and it was no wonder it had sat on the market for so long – it was not for the faint-hearted,” recalls Jo of the property, which had been uninhabited for years.

For the couple, the appeal lay in the home’s beautiful leafy hinterland location in Montville. Once it was theirs, they began planning how to transform it into a tranquil getaway.

FROM THE GROUND UP

“The outer walls and concrete slab were solid, but once we began we realised everything else – the internal walls, flooring and ceiling – had to go. The plumbing and wiring also needed to be completely redone by tradies,” recalls John, who worked on the project full time for nine

months, joined by the couple’s adult son, Flynn. Jo was on site daily, managing deliveries and trades, before she left for work. “We were literally at Bunnings every second day and took on as much work as we could do ourselves,” she adds.

Although completely gutting the three-bedroom house extended the scope and cost of the renovation, an upside was a clean slate for a complete layout redesign. The original slab is now used more effectively to accommodate five bedrooms and three bathrooms as well as an openplan kitchen, lounge and dining zone. To make the most of the Queensland climate, a front deck and large back verandah were also added.

For the interior fit-out, Jo loved the process of choosing the colours, materials, furnishings and custom integrated joinery, to make use of John’s carpentry talents. In the

dining area a sweeping booth seat is a space-savvy solution, as is a handcrafted bunk bed and mini floating grooming stations for each of the bedrooms.

TACKLING THE TERRAIN

What began as a plan to create a usable yard on the sloping site turned into major earthworks, involving tonnes of sandstone blocks and trailer loads of turf, trees and pavers. Three months of unrelenting rain also added to the complexity of the project. “We just had to work around clear days when we could, but eventually it all came together,” says John.

Now the tools are down and the red mud has been replaced with lush lawns and burgeoning gardens, the couple can reap the benefit of their vision and hard work. “We absolutely love it here,” enthuses John. “When I look around, I am proud of our achievements and especially Jo’s design skills.” The sentiment is shared. “We’re such a great team,” adds Jo. “It’s so satisfying to work together to transform an old rundown ‘box’ into a beautiful, warm, comfortable home.” ●

ROOM TO GROOM

To avoid jostling for space while getting ready in the bathroom, the couple looked to resolve the issue with mini make-up tables in each bedroom. See page 66 for how John made them from off-the-shelf items.

WELL DISGUISED

An existing water tank was an eyesore the couple skilfully disguised with a raised garden bed, planted with gardenias that wrap around the perimeter. The concrete top is concealed with Tuff Turf synthetic grass, creating a seamless extension of their lawn area and a wonderful level surface for outdoor games and furniture.

THE PERFECT WHITE

Rather than choose a variety of paint colours, Jo kept things simple and seamless by opting for Dulux Natural White throughout. “It’s a soft shade of white with a modern edge and a subtle warmth,” she says.

BESPOKE BUNKS

For younger visitors, fun bunk beds add to the thrill of weekends away – and are also great space savers. John built these using durable treated pine. Safety tip: Bunks are not suitable for children under 10.

Shop the look

CREATE A BATHROOM THAT’S STYLISH AND SAFE FOR

AGE IN PLACE

There are important design considerations when planning an assisted living bathroom. Caroma’s senior manager in product visualisation, Dr Peter Sweatman, shares his top three

1. Create a safe environment

Reducing the risk of falls is a key focus of smarter, more supportive bathroom design, says Dr Peter. And grab rails are a practical addition to any bathroom designed for assisted living. “The Caroma HomeCare Grab Rail 600 STR in Matte Black or Caroma HomeCare Grab Rail 900 STR in Brushed Nickel have dual fixing points and are tested to take a minimum 110kg when fixed into a structural element,” he says.

2. Prioritise comfort and ease

Making the space more comfortable and enjoyable is also important. “It’s about using design to make bathroom tasks easier and more convenient for people,” Dr Peter explains. “Try fixtures and fittings that appeal visually and work with your overall design, such as a Caroma HomeCare Care Rail Shower or Caroma HomeCare Basin Mixer.”

3. Make cleaning convenient

When choosing tapware and fixtures, look for smooth, simple surfaces. “The sleek design of the Caroma HomeCare Shower Mixer is easy to wipe down, so it’s less likely to harbour dirt and harmful germs,” he says.

HomeCare by Caroma products are available exclusively at Bunnings.

EXPERT TIPS

Dr Peter Sweatman, PhD in user-centred bathroom design, offers this advice for designing an assisted living bathroom

TAPWARE

“Choose tapware with larger hot/cold indicators. These are easier to see for people with reduced eyesight, and help to promote safety and independence.”

“Extended handles and curved surfaces reduce water retention on the outlet and handle for increased hygiene.”

SHOWERS

“Select and install a load-bearing rail for safety.”

“An ergonomic slider will be easier to operate. Choose a twist-lock slider to enable swift, secure height adjustment to suit various users.”

“Go for a three-function handset with adjustable spray settings, and silicone nozzles that are easy to rub clean.”

Staying home

Turn to assisted living design to help create a place you can truly call your forever home

All homes are not created equal, particularly when accommodating special needs. However, with good planning and helpful design inclusions, greater accessibility and comfort can be achieved. In 2022, more than one in five Australians was living with disability1, including more than half of those over 65. And we’re not getting any younger: in 2020, over-65s made up 16 per cent of the population2 – with numbers expected to grow. Anticipating and addressing future requirements can smooth daily life

as well as help people stay at home for longer (the Royal Commission report into Aged Care Quality and Safety revealed that 80 per cent3 of us would prefer to do so).

A basic principle is to reduce the risk of falls and make tasks as easy as possible, says Peter Sweatman, PhD, Caroma’s senior manager in product visualisation.

So whether you’re buying, building, renovating or looking for a new rental, it’s worth considering inclusions to support assisted living, to improve access and liveability for all.

LOVE THE LAYOUT

Overall, a forever home should feel comfortable, adaptable, secure and inspiring, says Annabelle McQuillan, principal designer at Bespoke Belle Building Design, who points to the importance of designing homes with easy navigation, including wider rooms and circulation areas. A single-level building presents the most user-friendly option, but if that’s not possible, a lift may be required. “Stairs can present a major challenge to people as they get older,” says Peter Sweatman. “Level entry and access to the most important areas of the home, including at least one bathroom, can become essential.”

Another design priority for older residents is good security. “We limit entry points and often include an intercom at the front door, along with design features that allow for street surveillance or a visual connection to a neighbour,” says

Annabelle. Where possible, devise a separate, self-contained area of the home for family members or carers to stay, either short- or long-term, suggests Annabelle. “We also create inspiring and purposeful spaces for hobbies – whether a sunny garden, library, workshop or craft room – to make staying at home enjoyable.”

LOOK TO THE LIGHTING

A well-lit home can help to reduce the risk of falls as well as promote a sense of wellbeing. “Good lighting is key in a forever home,” says Annabelle. “We use dimmable main lights, task lighting and step lights for stairs, along with sensor night lights for halls and ensuites. The colour temperature is carefully chosen – neutral for task areas and warmer in bedrooms to support natural circadian rhythms.” Bright, even lighting is important, says Peter, who suggests having options for different lighting levels

for different times of the day. “Being able to turn on subdued lighting in the middle of the night makes toilet visits less disruptive,” he says. “Sometimes people will avoid turning lights on because they are worried it will be too bright, so they risk stumbling in the dark.” Look for switches that are user friendly for elderly hands and have them positioned for ease of access, such as by the bed. For the tech savvy, a home-automation scheme that operates functions like lighting, security, heating and cooling from a tablet or smartphone could be the way to go.

FIND THE RIGHT FLOORING

Softer floor surfaces are not only more comfortable to walk on, but also help reduce injuries in falls, says Annabelle. “I avoid polished concrete and tiles, opting for natural or engineered timber and carpet instead,” she explains. Select low-pile carpet over rugs, which can slip or become a trip hazard. Vinyl, available in a wide range of styles, is another option that’s more forgiving underfoot. Transition strips between rooms and different surfaces should be as low profile as possible, and look to have flush sills for door thresholds giving access to the outdoors.

CREATE KITCHEN CONFIDENCE

Tall overhead cupboards and high shelving are best avoided in kitchens for the less able. Drawers allow easy access to items, and provide

Tap with lever handle

significantly more storage space than cupboards, so get the tick of approval. “We focus on reducing the need for high or low reaching, with appliances such as wall ovens, wall microwaves and single dishdrawer dishwashers placed just below the counter,” explains Annabelle. “Plenty of bench space and appliance cupboards minimise the need to lift heavy items.” Handles are easier to grasp than knobs for arthritic hands, as are lever taps. Annabelle also likes to include comfortable seating at bench height, “Or a lower, table-height bench area so you can sit down and enjoy preparing meals,” she says.

MAKE BATHROOMS FUNCTIONAL

Roominess is key in an assisted living bathroom. “Providing extra space to move around makes it more comfortable and allows space for equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and shower chairs,” says Peter. “It also makes it much easier if someone is helping you.” If there’s

Toilet roll holder with grab rail

room for a bath, keep it separate from the shower zone and avoid having a shower over the bath. “They are difficult to access and have a small slippery standing area,” warns Peter. “A step-free shower with a wide entry is a much better option.” For the shower itself, an adjustable hand shower on a grab rail offers the greatest flexibility. Toilet selection is important, too – and try before you buy is the message here. “Generally, people will find getting up and down from a taller toilet easier and more comfortable,” explains Peter.

Securely fitted grab rails are a great help in the home – good for transition zones and areas where changes of level are unavoidable – but especially in the bathroom. “A big help is having a grab rail to hold on to where it’s needed, like adjacent to the toilet and the shower,” says Peter.

Adequate storage in the bathroom is often underestimated, he adds. “Think ahead about where you store those items you need for your daily routines,” he says. ●

LAUNDRY LIST

Turn your washday area into a multitasking marvel, without blowing the budget

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, but the real workhorse is the laundry. Usually the smallest room, we expect it to deliver much more than just washing clothes. “In a family home, the laundry is a multitasking powerhouse,” says interior designer and co-founder of Super Easy Storage Jordana Thirlwall. This typically unglam space can shine, however, and the washer/ dryer and tub are only the beginning.

MAKE IT VERSATILE

The dominant trend for laundries is greater functionality, explains John Harrison of Kaboodle Kitchen. “With multigenerational living on the rise and space at a premium, today’s laundry is evolving into a versatile, multifunctional area that doubles as butler’s pantry and mudroom,” he says. Often used as an informal entrance, laundries might also see a steady flow of bags, shoes and

Perfect for pets

If space allows, include a dedicated spot for pooch

sports gear; kitchen storage overflow; and even tools and gardening gear. “Many laundries are also embracing pet-friendly features, integrating pet-specific storage, built-in pet nooks and wash stations,” says John. Aesthetics are important, too, with an emphasis on sleek finishes, styling and even the inclusion of art. “A bold artwork can add personality and bring an element of surprise to this oftenoverlooked space,” says Jordana.

FIND CLEVER SOLUTIONS

Clutter diminishes the most elegant spaces, so well-planned storage is a must. Cordless vac? Include a power point in a tall cupboard. Giant bags of kibble? Internal bins or hampers are the solution. No space for folding? Extend the benchtop over the washing machine and dryer. A basic mudroom function can be incorporated by adding hooks for bags and coats. Make a bench seat from timber benchtop offcuts for perching on while putting on shoes, suggests John Harrison. Consider other simple additions to boost usefulness. For example, a rail over the bench or sink is great for hanging and drying clothes.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIALS

Creating a high-end look doesn’t require high-end materials. Plain white cabinetry looks warm and welcoming when contrasted with timber accents such as a benchtop and open shelves. Or opt for finishes in a trending colour or textured timber look. Splashbacks can be dressed up without breaking

the bank, too. Use this space to play with an interesting effect, like marblelook or kit kat tiles, or textured panels. And don’t forget the small details. “For a luxe look, focus on stylish handles and elevated accessories. Metallics are making a comeback, so incorporating this trend with handles can be an affordable, impactful upgrade,” says John.

GIVE IT A STYLE OVERHAUL

Use cute and clever design tweaks to create a stylish but functional space. Simple solutions might include decanting cleaning products into containers that match your interior aesthetic. “These could be clear glass for a minimalistic feel, amber bottles to add a vintage touch, or sleek matt dispensers for a more modern edge,” says Jordana Thirlwall.

Borrow ideas from living spaces to create a room that reflects your taste – a framed print or scented candle goes a long way. Open shelves break up a row of cabinets, are handy for frequently used items and can be styled with a plant or fresh flowers. ●

AUTUMN GARDEN PLANNER

There’s plenty to do to set up for the new season. Tackle tasks in stages and enjoy the journey

As keen gardeners know, the secret to a fabulous spring garden lies in what you do now. Autumn is an important transition period, a time to do selective trimming, tidy up and prep for the cool months ahead. To make it easy, we’ve divided autumn’s essential garden tasks over four weekends – a sequential action plan that will help you get it all covered.

Early autumn calls for a general tidy-up in the garden, as well as a little spraying and preparing

■ Trim back excess growth on shrubs, and prune rampant tendrils on climbing plants like star jasmine and wisteria. Pull out summer flowers and vegies that are dead or fading. Lightly prune back roses to encourage another crop of blooms.

■ Dig out weeds from garden beds before their seedheads drop and germinate, only to reappear next spring. Spray lawn weeds with a selective lawn herbicide or dig them out by hand, making sure you remove the roots.

● Mimosa ‘Cordoba’

■ Feed citrus trees, whether in pots or garden beds, and water in well.

■ Spray garden pests like aphids, which often cluster on new plant growth at this time of year. Also watch for scale insects on citrus trees – spray them with a horticultural oil.

■ Buy bulbs now while there’s a good selection available. Varieties that like cold winters, such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, can be placed in the fridge crisper for 4-6 weeks before planting.

products can be ordered.

With its milder temperatures and plenty of daylight hours, autumn is the best time of year for replacing paving and decking, laying a new path or building a raised vegie bed. For a winter-friendly outdoor space, consider installing a fire-pit zone. For this, you’ll need to clear a circular area, install pavers or crushed granite and bring in seating. Then place a fire pit in the centre and get ready to enjoy cosy outdoor gatherings throughout the cooler months.

cut

Give roses an autumn tidy by deadheading spent blooms and removing – and binning – diseased foliage. Use clean, sharp secateurs and sterilise blades between cuts with diluted bleach, a few drops of tea-tree oil on a soft cloth or disinfectant wipes. Look out for pests, too, and treat accordingly.

Keep in mind

■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix and also when pruning, along with long sleeves, as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and cause allergic reactions.

■ Store garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

■ Check fire pit manufacturer’s safety/set-up advice and local authority regulations for open fires. Position fire pits away from combustible structures; only burn dry, sustainably forested timber.

Lift and separate

When flowers and foliage have died off, dig up dahlia tubers, gently shake off the soil and divide clumps. Place them, eye pointing up, on a bed of potting mix and sawdust in a box, cover lightly with this mix and store in a cool, dark place, until ready to plant out in late October/early November.

WEEKEND

Some planting and feeding now will keep your autumn garden plans right on track

■ Plant seedlings or seeds of cool-season vegetables, such as peas, broccoli, broad beans and spinach. Coriander loves the cooler weather, too – sow seeds directly into

crumbly, moist soil, cover lightly with seed-raising mix and water regularly with a fine mist spray until they germinate.

■ Fertilise your lawn to encourage grass to thicken and green up before the winter slowdown. Use a granular lawn food that contains plenty of organic material to enrich the soil beneath, and make sure it’s watered in thoroughly.

■ Feed everything in the garden with an organic fertiliser such as blood and bone or manure pellets. Tip: Use a wheelbarrow to move heavy fertiliser bags around the garden.

■ Rake up autumn leaves as they fall and pile them

into jumbo-sized garbage bags (with a few holes poked through). Set them aside and let them rot down for a few months into leaf mould, then use it as a mulch or soil conditioner.

■ Plant spring-flowering favourites like cineraria, stocks, primula, lobelia, pansies and foxgloves for a colourful display in a few months’ time.

■ Get creative! Pretty up the autumn garden with potted colour. Look for blooming perennials such as chrysanthemums, asters, dahlias, Japanese anemones, penstemons and rudbeckias. Plant a few in decorative containers or fill empty pockets in garden beds.

SOW GOOD

asters now for a glorious splash of late-season colour. For best results, grow in a sunny, airy position.

– autumn is the best time to get them established

■ Seek out autumnfoliage stunners like maples and crepe myrtles while they’re showing off their seasonal colours. Now is also a good time to plant autumn-flowering shrubs like sasanqua camellias and tibouchinas.

■ Get into composting by buying a compost bin.

Alternate layers of dry fallen leaves with moist materials like kitchen scraps and grass clippings. Sprinkle over a few handfuls of cow manure every few layers, and use a garden fork to mix everything together. Turn the heap every few weeks – by spring you’ll have a great soil improver that’s ready to go.

Give hedges a prewinter trim to tidy them up. Trim only lightly, especially in cold areas, as most plants will generate no new growth until next spring.

■ Put in a few strawberry plants so you’ll have fruit to pick by spring. In the garden, they like raised-up beds, a layer of surface mulch and plenty of sunlight. If using pots, plant them in a goodquality potting mix and feed with soluble fertiliser every three weeks or so.

Embrace the beauty of autumn by choosing plants that put on a fabulous late-season display

WEEKEND

Finish off planting before the cold weather arrives and get your outdoor living zones winter-ready

■ Plant bulbs that have been chilling in the fridge. Follow the planting depth and spacing listed on the packaging. If planting in pots, you can pack them in more closely to create a dense flower display.

■ Use a high-pressure cleaner to remove moss and mildew from outdoor living areas and paths – the cooler days and reduced sunshine over the next few months can leave those outdoor surfaces slippery.

■ Install frost protection where winters are cold to protect any tender plants that you can’t move. The easiest approach is to build a frame and cover it each night with frost cloth, plastic, bubble wrap, hessian or similar.

■ Make a garden-inspired gift for Mother’s Day. Two easy ideas: plant up a decorative bowl with miniature cyclamen for colour right through winter; or take the culinary route and fill a pot or basket with herbs (you’ll find a good selection available at this time of year). ●

Bright & beautiful

Keep colour in your life through the cooler months with the stunning blooms of orchids

Orchids are loved for their exotic blooms in bright colours, unique patterns and intriguing shapes. Their dramatic looks can make them seem intimidating to grow but, while it’s true some can be tricky, many are surprisingly simple to care for. Orchid collector and grower Jim Brydie says the secret is to start with the easy-growing varieties. They’ll reward you with long-lived plants and spectacular sprays of lasting colour year-round, with certain varieties shining brightest in the cooler months.

CLASSIC CYMBIDIUMS

Cymbidiums (Cymbidium spp. and cultivars) are a winter delight. They’re one of the most popular orchids to grow outdoors, much loved for their robust nature and generous spikes of blooms in various colours, patterns and sizes. The blossoms last for weeks and can also be used as cut flowers. They thrive in cool to temperate climates, especially in areas with mild winters, but require protection from frosts, which can kill developing flower spikes. Give them a spot

with plenty of bright, filtered light, like in the dappled shade of a tree. You may need a shade cloth in summer to protect them from harsh light. Repot every two to three years, either dividing the plant or moving it to a larger pot.

PRETTY PHALAENOPSIS

Known as moth orchids (Phalaenopsis spp. and cultivars), these beauties can be purchased in flower all year round. Their showy, elegant blooms resemble moths in flight and come in a variety of colours, from soft whites and pinks to bold purples and speckled or patterned types. “If you live in the tropics, they can be grown in a shade house or outdoors all year, however in temperate and cooler climes, they should be in a heated glasshouse or inside the home,” advises Jim. “If kept indoors, a bright spot with no direct sun is best.” You’ll also need to maintain some humidity. Sit the pot on a tray of pebbles and water. The water will evaporate to create humidity, but don’t put the pot directly in the water, as this can lead to root rot. Once flowers finish, if the stem

An orchid in full flower deserves pride of place

is green, cut it back to below the first flower. With care, it is likely to rebloom. If the spike turns brown, prune it back to the base and a new one will eventually develop.

CHARMING CATTLEYAS

Cattleya (Cattleya spp. and cultivars) orchids produce some of the largest blooms, spanning up to 10 centimetres. Their showy, sometimes fragrant flowers appear yearround, with vibrant petals and a trumpet-like lip, often in a contrasting or complementary hue. These resilient orchids are perfect for beginners and grow best in warm, humid climates, in a brightly lit spot out of direct sunlight.

“A 50 per cent shade cloth provides about the right light levels,” says Jim Brydie. “Lime-green foliage is an indication of proper light. Darker-green foliage may look more attractive, but it’s a sign your plant is not getting enough light and may stop the plant from reaching its full blooming potential.”

DELIGHTFUL DENDROBIUMS

There are about 1200 naturally occurring dendrobium species. “They come in all shapes and sizes, and aren’t all the same,” says Jim Brydie. “Soft-cane dendrobiums (Dendrobium nobile and hybrids) and Australian natives, such as the rock lily (Dendrobium speciosum) and pink rock orchid (Dendrobium kingianum), are easy to grow.”

Soft-cane dendrobiums appear in a wide range of colours, from delicate pastels to rich purple, yellow or even bi-coloured forms, and generally flower from late winter to early spring. Native dendrobiums flower in late winter and spring, the rock lily producing masses of pale yellow or white blooms and the pink rock orchid blooming in white, pink or near red. All grow best outdoors in warm climes and prefer bright, filtered light, such as under trees or a shade cloth.

OPULENT ONCIDIUMS

Also known as dancing lady orchids, oncidiums (Oncidium spp. and cultivars) have elegantly shaped flowers. The lower petal or lip fans out like a skirt, while the upper ones resemble arms in motion. Blooms are typically yellow with brown patterning but can be white, red, pink, purple and orange. Oncidiums prefer warm, humid climates but can grow in cooler areas with extra care, like in a glasshouse or indoors over winter. They can be mounted onto a board, cork slab or aged fence palings, or grown in pots and hanging baskets.

GROWING ESSENTIALS

Most commonly grown orchids are epiphytes, meaning they naturally cling to trees or rocky surfaces, with exposed roots. To replicate these conditions it’s important to use a specialised potting mix, explains horticulturist Angie Thomas of Yates. “Orchid potting mixes are typically composed of graded pine bark and are specially developed to be coarse and free-draining,” she says. Ensure water runs through quickly and roots are well aerated. Orchids will generally be less thirsty in winter, when watering can be significantly reduced, advises Angie. “Test whether your orchid needs water by gently digging your finger into the top few centimetres of potting mix – if you can still feel moisture, leave it and check in another week,” she says. This varies between orchids, so check specific needs. Feed regularly with an orchid fertiliser when growing and flowering, but give it a rest once flowering is over. Follow the pack instructions to avoid fertiliser burn or over-feeding. Angie says a common problem is root or crown rot disease. “This is often caused by overwatering or watering the orchid leaves rather than the potting mix,” she says. Another common issue is mealybugs. “They’re sap-sucking pests that cause leaves to yellow and plant health to suffer. Use a soap-based insecticide to control them.” ●

Choose deciduous trees and shrubs that put on a spectacular autumn display

JAPANESE MAPLE (Acer palmatum)

Renowned for its stunning foliage, there is a maple to suit every shape and size requirement. Autumn leaf shades range from rich burgundy to fiery crimson, orange and gold. A popular shrub or small tree, it has a compact root system and can reach a height of up to about 6-10m. Grow in well-draining soil in a partly shaded spot that’s protected from strong winds.

GINKGO (Ginkgo biloba)

This deciduous tree delivers one of the most dramatic cool-season transformations as its light green leaves turn buttery, golden yellow. Slow growing, it forms an attractive pyramid shape and can grow to more than 20m tall and 10m wide, making it best suited to large gardens. For smaller spaces, look for dwarf forms. Plant in a sunny spot in rich, fertile soil.

SMOKE BUSH (Cotinus coggygria)

While best known for its misty plumes of flower clusters in spring and summer, the autumn foliage on this large shrub is equally impressive. It likes full sun and will grow in most areas, from cold to subtropical. Shape it into a small feature tree or clip into an informal hedge or privacy screen. Compact varieties can be grown in pots.

FOREST PANSY (Cercis canadensis)

A small to medium tree that has large purple heartshaped leaves which turn to shades of green in summer, then red, gold and yellow in autumn. In spring, the bare branches are adorned with small pink flowers. This tree is ideal for small gardens or courtyards, in full sun to part shade and sheltered from strong winds. Use it as a feature tree or as part of a grouping. ●

MATURE TASTES

Is your dog starting to slow down a bit? It might be time for a change in diet. In general, dogs aged seven years and older start taking life a bit easier and, as a result, their nutritional needs begin to change, says Helen Warnes of Purina. “With large breeds, this can happen from around five years old,” she adds.

Healthy choices

Help your dog stay well with an ageappropriate diet

Older dogs are less active and have a slower metabolism, so need fewer kilojoules, less fat and high-quality protein. Joint and orthopaedic issues might also be an issue, so food for senior dogs often contains omega-3 from fish that supports joints and mobility, while promoting healthy brain function.

As your dog’s sense of smell and taste might be fading, along with their chewing ability, Helen suggests a smaller size of dry-food kibble served at room temperature to help them get the most out of meals, and a higher meat content to help whet their appetite.

Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.

FAB FOUR

These gentle border collies love their food and footy!

1 We live in… Noosaville, Queensland.

2 Our morning routine includes… getting up early to go for a walk, breakfast, a sleep, then we see what work we have on as therapy dogs.

3 We have a habit of… being like clockwork when we want our food.

4 We get a bit grumpy when… we’re hungry.

5 Our perfect day involves… walks, beach and a barbecue dinner on the river.

With their happy chatter and bright colours, budgies make wonderful pets. They are also a good species to start with if you’re new to owning birds.

Choosing your bird: Budgies are extremely social. A single budgie is okay if you’ll be with them most of the time, otherwise find a pair. Choose birds that are active, upright, have smooth feathers and are clean around their vent and beak.

Creating their home: As with all birds, try to get the biggest cage you can – for budgies, longer is better than taller. Add a variety of perch sizes (include sticks from the backyard) and ensure these are not over food or water. Budgies love toys: mirrors, swings and chew toys will all be enjoyed. Put the cage out of direct sun and draughts – the closer to your household’s hub the better, as they will soon become a chirpy part of your family.

6 Our favourite activity is... watching the footy on TV!

7 We find it difficult to… get full.

8 Others would describe us as… the fluffiest and softest pups out there.

HAIR, THERE AND EVERYWHERE

Furniture sporting a fur coat? Survive the shedding season with these tips to minimise pet hair

Dog parents will be all too familiar with finding their pet’s hair wherever they go, especially on clothes, furniture and carpets. It can be worse in spring and autumn when dogs lighten their coat before summer or grow a thicker coat for winter, although some breeds shed year-round.

UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS

While it may be annoying for us, shedding helps pets remove old, damaged or unwanted fur, helping them regulate their body temperature and keep their coat healthy.

According to James Bennett from the Australian Dog Grooming School (australiandoggroomingschool.com.au), some breeds are heavy shedders, while others are considered low-shedding or hypo-allergenic. “Double-coated breeds like huskies, German shepherds and labradors shed significantly, especially during seasonal changes,” says James. “Breeds like poodles and Bichon Frisés shed very little, but they still require regular grooming to manage their coat.”

GROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Grooming helps control shedding by removing loose fur before it falls and distributing natural oils that keep your pet’s coat healthy. It also prevents fur from matting and allows pet owners and groomers to find skin conditions or parasites early.

Bathing may also help loosen hair that’s ready to come out. James suggests washing dogs every four to six weeks – more often can strip the coat of natural oils, although dogs with oilier coats or skin conditions may

need more frequent baths. And it’s important to use a product formulated for pets, as human shampoos have different pH levels, adds James. Dry double-coated breeds thoroughly after washing, as their heavy undercoat can trap moisture against the skin and cause skin issues.

Shaving a shedding breed should only ever be considered as a last resort, says Lexie Madafferi from the Dog Groomers Association of Western Australia (dgawa.com.au). “Shaving a double-coated breed can cause permanent damage to the coat,” she says. “When – or if – a shaved double coat grows back, the undercoat will grow in first, usually in patches. The guard coat can take years to grow back. The guard coat/undercoat combination on these double-coated dogs plays an important role in regulating their temperature and protecting them from the sun.”

ESSENTIAL KIT

A dog’s coat should be brushed often – James recommends brushing once or twice a week with slicker brushes, deshedding tools or combs.

Also invest in devices for de-hairing your home. James says a rubber broom is a great tool for gathering pet hair on hard surfaces. A good vacuum with an upholstery attachment will capture hair on furniture, while lint rollers are perfect for quick fixes and clothes. Above all, though, Lexie says, “The joy our furry friends bring to our lives is often worth the fluffy couch.” ●

GOODBYE, ANNOYING STAINS

Get your home back in order after the busy summer season with CLR, the multipurpose cleaning range that’s now more versatile

The only cleaner you’ll ever need, suitable for every area of your home, can now be used in more ways than ever before with the introduction of a new and convenient spray-on formula for removing calcium, limescale and rust, plus two specialist cleaning products: CLR Bathroom & Kitchen Action Cleaner and Grease & Oil Remover

For your whole home

After a summer of friends and family filling your home, the calm and quiet of the cooler season is on its way. And it’s the perfect time to give your home – and everything in it – a deep clean. CLR is the calcium, limescale and rust-removing cleaner you may already love, but it’s useful for so much more than you may have thought. The

traditional concentrated formulation of CLR Calcium, Limescale & Rust Remover, available in 1L, 4L and 20L packs, can be diluted and used around the house to clean the dishwasher, washing machine, sinks, taps, showerhead, glass screens and more. It’s also a great option for exterior cleaning, from the driveway and paths to surfaces (and even most of the tools) in your garage or workshop.

New kid on the block

For an even more convenient cleaning solution, CLR is now also available as Ready to Use Calcium, Limescale & Rust Remover spray, which doesn’t need to be diluted. Just spray the solution onto whatever surface you need to clean, wait for two minutes, then scrub lightly and rinse with clean, cold water. It makes

almost any surface look as good as new, and gets them hygienically clean as CLR kills up to 99.9 per cent of germs.

CLR also has two other extremely convenient products in the cleaning range: Bathroom & Kitchen Action Cleaner and Grease & Oil Remover

While traditional CLR can certainly be used in the kitchen and the bathroom, the dedicated bathroom formulation is perfect for removing dirt and soap scum commonly found on surfaces like basins, tapware, baths and shower screens.

The updated Grease & Oil Remover is not only readily biodegradable but also has 1.5 times the grease-cutting power of the old formula, so it is an even more effective choice for cutting through tougher grime – such as that found on a barbie that’s been put to good use

Power through tough grease with the biodegradable CLR Grease & Oil Remover formula

CLR makes your home clean and hygienic, killing 99.9 per cent of germs

over the summer, as well as paths or driveways that have seen a lot of traffic, and garage or workshop floors that may have experienced the odd oil spill.

Kinder cleaning

Unlike a lot of industrial-strength cleaners, traditional CLR is phosphate free, making it kinder to our waterways. The active ingredient in traditional CLR and the ready-to-use spray is derived from plants and, as these products are EPA-certified and biodegradable – as is the Bathroom & Kitchen Cleaner – these products are gentler on people and the environment, while being tough on all kinds of dirt. CLR is also non-abrasive, so it can power through dirt even on delicate surfaces, getting every area of your home sparkling clean.

WHICH ROLLER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Monarch Ultra Microfibre Mini Roller has a high fibre density to help it pick up and release more paint, keep its shape and maintain performance for longer than other microfibre rollers. Plus, a short 4mm nap provides an ultra-smooth finish.

The Monarch Ultimate Coverage Fabric Mini Roller has a thick open-weave structure so it easily absorbs and releases paint. This gives greater coverage to get the job done fast. Choose a 14mm nap for smooth surfaces, or 20mm for rough and textured surfaces.

The Monarch High Density Foam Mini Roller is made from premium seamless foam designed to hold the perfect amount of paint and apply a thinner coat on smooth surfaces. This makes it ideal when used with oil-based paint or enamels, to achieve a high gloss, streak-free finish.

Tie the husks together on each cob with string or with strips of discarded corn husk. Trim the dry ends with scissors. Lower the cobs into the pot, leaving the husks out of the boiling water. Boil for 5 minutes, then lift out of the water and allow to cool.

Texas blackjack beef kebabs

PREP: 30 MINS + 1 HR CHILLING

COOK: 20 MINS

MAKES 20; SERVES 6

n 1 cup dark beer or ale

n 1/3 cup barbecue sauce

n 2 tbsp dark coconut syrup or molasses

n 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

n ¼ cup lime juice

n 2 tbsp brown sugar

n 2 garlic cloves, crushed

n 2 tsp ground chipotle or chipotle sauce

n 700g skirt steak (see Tips, right)

n Olive oil, for grilling

n Thinly sliced green chilli and oregano leaves, to serve

1 Combine the beer, barbecue sauce, syrup, vinegar, lime juice, sugar, garlic and chipotle in a pan on medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Boil for 12 minutes or until thickened slightly. Pour into a heatproof jug; allow to cool.

2 Cut the steak, against the grain, into 5mm slices. Add 2/3 cup of the marinade to the steak and stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours.

3 Soak 40 x 16cm wooden skewers in cold water for 10 minutes. Thread the meat onto a skewer, then thread another skewer at a slight angle to secure any loose pieces. Repeat with the remaining meat. (Or just use single skewers if preferred.)

4 Heat an oiled barbecue to mediumhigh. Cook the skewers for 5 minutes with the lid down, turning halfway and brushing with more oil until meat is lightly charred and just cooked through. Transfer to a clean plate.

5 Drizzle with the remaining marinade and turn until coated. Arrange kebabs on a serving platter. Garnish with chilli and oregano leaves and serve with the remaining marinade on the side.

Tips: With minimal cooking on a hot barbecue, skirt steak produces a tender kebab, but you can also use rump, sirloin, porterhouse or eye fillet to make the skewers. Unused marinade can be stored in a jar in the fridge for up to one month.

MAKES 12

n 1.5kg chicken breast or thigh fillets

n 2 tbsp olive oil

n 1½ tbsp apple cider vinegar

n 2 tsp chipotle sauce

1 Cut chicken into 2cm cubes and put in a bowl. Add garlic and onion powder, season and stir until mixed.

(Tip: If you tend to overcook meat, use thigh fillets –they can sustain longer cooking times and stay tender.)

2 To make the marinade, combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Add chicken, stir until mixed, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.

3 Soak 12 x 25cm wooden skewers in cold water for 10 minutes. Thread the chicken onto the skewers and discard any remaining marinade.

6 WAYS TO A COSY HOME

Prepare your place for the cooler months with these easy, practical tips

Georgia Madden

1

KEEP IN THE WARMTH

The first step to staying warm and reducing heating bills is to stop warmth from escaping, according to Weiyue Ma, home furnishings buyer at Bunnings. “Swap summery blinds or sheers for thick, insulating blockout curtains,” she suggests. Other steps to take could include sealing gaps around doors and windows, topping up roof and wall insulation and closing off rooms when not in use.

2

ADD TOUCH-ME TEXTURES

Dial up the snuggle factor and make your home more inviting with sumptuous textures in your living spaces, says Weiyue. Look for cushions and throws in tactile materials like wool, faux fur and velvet for on the sofa and textured rugs underfoot. Or consider a flame-effect heater to create a toasty focal point that everyone will love gathering around.

3

CLEAR THE AIR

The downside of a well-sealed winter home is that allergens, dust and pollutants cannot escape, and might trigger respiratory issues. Protect your family’s health by investing in a quality air purifier that removes dust, pollutants and allergens from the air. Check the unit is the correct size for the rooms in which it will be used and look for one with a ‘true’ HEPA filter, which filters 99.97 per cent of airborne particles as small as 0.3 of a micron.

DUST RIGHT

A regular, effective cleaning routine can help to keep dust and airborne irritants at bay, says healthy home building consultant Zara D’Cotta (thehealthyhome.com.au)*. “Start by wiping high surfaces, such as ceiling fans and shelves, with a damp microfibre cloth to capture dust – not spread it – then work your way down to lower areas,” she says. “Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and a motorised head to capture fine particles that standard vacuums may miss or recirculate into the air.”

5

PREVENT MOISTURE

Use an exhaust fan or open a window during and after showering, and wipe down bathroom surfaces to help stop condensation and mould build-up. “Installing a humidistat can be helpful too, as it automatically activates the fan when humidity levels rise,” says Zara. “Open the laundry window or door when drying clothes or choose a condenser dryer, and turn on the exhaust fan when cooking, ensuring it is vented to the outside of the home rather than the roof space.”

6

CREATE A SANCTUARY Transform your bedroom into a healthy winter retreat. First, declutter then deep-clean, suggests Zara. “To minimise exposure to harmful chemicals, look for non-toxic textiles made with natural fibres for rugs, bedding and curtains,” she says. If buying a new mattress or topper, choose one in a natural material such as cotton, and raise the bed (at least 40cm above the floor) so the mattress can breathe. If redecorating, use paints free of, or low in, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and open windows daily for a burst of fresh air. ●

MAKE YOUR OWN

Save money and help boost the health of your home by making your own DIY cleaning products. For a cleaner and mould treatment, cleaning expert Leanne Neiland (@home.with.leanne) suggests mixing 10 drops of clove oil –which has antifungal properties – with one cup of boiled and cooled water and three drops of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. “Apply to the surface, leave for five minutes then wipe with a damp microfibre cloth,” she says.

MAKE LIGHT WORK OF DIY

Boost your efficiency and stay comfortable with these tools for hands-free help

Working on a DIY project means you need to stay focused while remaining safe. Opt for equipment with handy features to make tasks easier and leave you free to concentrate.

PROTECTIVE GLOVES

When painting, handling messy materials or working with dirt or chemicals, safety is always top of the list. Nitrile gloves offer protection along with flexibility and durability.

● Craftright nitrile gloves, $2.34/medium, I/N: 0180067

TOOL BELTS AND WORKWEAR

A good tool belt is a must for keeping gear organised and within reach. Look for one with multiple pockets so you can carry everything from garden shears to pencils without missing a beat. With 10 handy pockets, the Irwin tool belt is a sturdy option, while the compact and durable ToughBuilt small electrician pouch is perfect for light jobs. Pair these with Hard Yakka 3056 cargo pants, made from stretch canvas for durability and comfort.

● Irwin 10 pocket split leather construction tool belt, $49.98, I/N: 5821346

HEADLAMPS

A headlamp is a great hands-free help for DIY jobs or gardening in low light. A good headlamp will provide brightness in different levels. Also look for one that is water and impact resistant.

● Nebo 150 lumen headlamp, $13.99, I/N: 0353856

Protecting your hearing is crucial, especially during loud tasks such as sawing, mowing or using power tools. Make sure you choose lightweight ear muffs that give you great sound protection but also still allow you to hear conversations or important sounds in your environment, maintaining safety and awareness while you get on with the job.

● 3M ‘WorkTunes’ call connect Bluetooth ear muffs, $99, I/N: 0095130

ELECTRONIC EAR MUFFS

LAWN AERATORS

For a practical twist on lawn care, aerator sandals are a simple yet effective solution. By walking across your lawn, these sandals help aerate the soil, improving water and nutrient absorption for healthier grass. Look for easyto-use sandals, with durable spikes and sturdy straps that just slip on over your shoes.

COMFORT KNEE PADS

Gardening and other hands-on tasks can be tough on your joints, making comfortable knee pads a must-have. Hardshell pads offer thick cushioning and a non-slip surface, providing stability while you kneel on hard or uneven surfaces.

TOOL BAGS FOR EASY TRANSPORTATION

Keep all your gear organised and portable with a tough, reliable tool bag. The Ryobi and Craftright tool bags are both excellent choices, providing ample storage for everything from power tools to smaller accessories. These bags ensure you have everything you need within reach, whether working indoors or out. ●

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and mask)

n Ruler and pencil

n Scissors

n 25mm wall paintbrush

n Paint tray or palette

n Artist’s paintbrushes

n Lamps

n Painter’s tape

n Acid-free tissue paper

n Mod Podge

n Artist’s acrylic paints

STEP 1: CUT PAPER

1 Remove shade from lamp base. Mask off the neck of the lamp base with painter’s tape. Position shade on a stack of tissue paper and mark the height, then cut.

STEP 2: COAT SHADE

2 Use a 25mm brush to apply Mod Podge to the lamp shade, then wrap a piece of tissue paper around shade. Repeat to build up several layers of paper, finishing with a coat of Mod Podge. Leave to dry.

STEP 3: COVER BASE

3 Cut tissue paper into 50mm x 100mm strips. Apply Mod Podge to the lamp base then smooth on strips. Repeat to cover base and build up several layers, finishing with a coat of Mod Podge. Leave to dry.

STEP 4: PAINT DESIGN

4 Use acrylic paints and artist’s brushes to create abstract designs on the lamp shades and bases. Apply two coats; let dry after each. Remove tape and reassemble lamps.

PAPER LANTERNS

Add a ‘Japandi’ touch to your table, lit with convenient battery-powered puck lights

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and mask)

n Ruler and pencil

n Scissors

n Paperclips

n Hot-glue gun with glue sticks

n Three 229mm bamboo craft rings

n Acid-free rice paper

n Double-sided adhesive tape

n 9.5mm x 3mm hobby wood

n Water-resistant puck lights

SIZE IT UP

Calculate the circumference of the bamboo rings by multiplying the diameter by 3.14, then add 15mm to allow for the ends of the paper shade to overlap. Mark this measurement on the rice paper as the width. Choose a height for the lantern proportional to the ring size, with two equal sections to be bisected by the centre ring (our lanterns are 400mm and 320mm high).

● Crafted 9in (229mm) bamboo ring, $3.50, I/N: 0323882 Pick it up! Use timber rings to give the lantern shade structure

Keep in mind

■ If painting a lamp, make sure it’s not plugged into the power, avoid getting paint on any electrical parts and allow to dry thoroughly before use.

■ When painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection and mask) and ensure the room is well ventilated.

■ When using a hot-glue gun, wear eye protection and a mask, work in a well-ventilated area, then place the appliance on its stand after use and allow it to cool down before storage. Do not leave unattended while in use or directly after use.

■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

STEP 1: CUT PAPER

1 To determine the measurements of the rice paper for the lantern, see ‘Size it up’, below left. Measure and mark a sheet of rice paper and cut out with scissors.

STEP

2: TAPE CYLINDER

2 Roll the paper into a cylinder, test-fit a bamboo ring over it and temporarily secure the cylinder at the top and base with paper clips. Join with double-sided tape.

STEP

3: ATTACH RINGS

3 Cut 5cm strips of tape and attach inside rings (trim tape if wider than rings) at intervals. Slide ring over paper cylinder to the base, remove tape backing and attach to cylinder. Repeat with remaining rings.

STEP

4: INSERT RODS

4 Measure and mark hobby wood to height of lamp and cut three rods with scissors. Insert rods, equally spaced, between paper and rings. Secure to rings with hot glue. Position puck light inside lantern. ●

Cut a round timber panel in half and stack to form the make-up bar

● Specrite 600mm x 18mm round pine multi-use panel, $19, I/N: 0419618• Pick it up!

1 Draw a centreline on the round timber panel, then clamp to a workbench and cut in half using a circular saw. Sand cut edges.

2 Using a caulking gun, run a generous bead of woodworking adhesive on one semicircular piece, position the second piece on top and clamp. Use a 3mm bit to predrill four evenly spaced holes 30mm in from the curved edge and one in the centre; secure with 30mm screws. Leave to set.

3 Sand the tabletop and the plywood angle brackets all over. Wipe away sanding dust with a lint-free cloth.

4 Working on a drop sheet, apply primer and two coats of paint to tabletop and brackets using a mini roller, leaving to dry after each coat.

5 To attach to a plasterboard wall, mark the height of the tabletop (800mm is standard), then use a stud finder to mark the stud centres on the wall (usually 450mm apart). Position brackets on the wall to mark the screw hole locations and predrill. Mark the underside of the tabletop (the side with the screws) for the brackets, predrill and secure with 30mm screws. Attach to the wall with 50mm screws, checking for level. To attach to a wardrobe door, check it is wider than 600mm, and there is enough clearance for the tabletop inside when the door is closed and a vanity stool. Secure tabletop to the door in the same way as to a wall, but use three brackets evenly spaced and hollow wall anchors.

6 Mark the location of the mirror about 50mm above the tabletop and centred, then attach using mirror tape and adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

7 Use the suction caps to attach the vanity light in the centre of the top of the mirror.
