Editor’s letter

Welcome!

There is something truly magical about spotting the first sparkle of Christmas each year, which is why my heart skipped with joy when I saw this month’s cover. (I think it was the twinkling unicorn clip-clopping through our front yard fairyland that got me.) Turn to page 24 to find more inspiration to create your own Santa scene for the whole neighbourhood. Then get ready

Easy guest-ready makes, from page 81

Behind the scenes

Who doesn’t love a magical creature? We created the ultimate fairyland fantasy for our cover and story (from page 24), starring Bunnings’ light-up reindeer and unicorns, plus a glorious arrangement of outdoor lights and even a cute fairy castle you can DIY. These festive creatures are in store for a limited time, so don’t miss out – plan your Christmas lights shopping trip for sooner rather than later!

for the arrival of those Christmas-time guests! From page 53, follow our guide to transforming your kitchen into an entertainer’s dream and tick off those jobs to get your home and garden ready (from page 75). Then, from page 81, we share three fabulous DIY projects – including a super clever hotel-style luggage rack – to make family and friends feel extra special when they arrive. Cheers to the beginning of the festive season.

Enjoy the issue!

Bunnings Workshop community member James (@Jamespeter100) created a nifty DIY system that uses microfibre cloths as water wicks, gently drawing moisture up into the soil from a reservoir created in the base of a raised garden bed. He laid down empty seedling punnets, then punched holes in a bag of potting mix and stuffed cloths through the holes (see top right). Placing the full bag on top of the false floor, he cut off the top layer of plastic and planted lettuce. A length of poly pipe carries water directly to the bottom, with arches forming a frame for plastic or a shade cloth. For more great DIY projects, visit workshop.bunnings.com.au.

There’s plenty to grow in the vegie patch this November!

Try beans, chilli, capsicum, cucumber, pumpkin, tomato, zucchini or bok choy. Improve the soil with compost prior to planting and mulch well.

Love fresh strawberries? Plant them in garden beds, pots or hanging baskets. Choose a spot in full sun and feed regularly with a fertiliser specially formulated for fruiting plants.

Sow a ‘salad bowl’ and keep it in easy reach of the kitchen or back door. Lettuce, spinach, rocket and bok choy are fast-growing varieties and need little space. Snip regularly to promote new growth. See below for some herbs to add extra flavour. Spread a layer of mulch over the vegie patch or pots to help suppress weeds and conserve moisture in the soil.

Powdery mildew can affect tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicums. It appears as light grey or powdery spots on leaves. Try applying an organic fungicide and repeat as needed.

THYME

PARSLEY

Italian or flat-leaf is the most popular form. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Harvest outer stalks first.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.+

With the support of Bunnings, Share the Dignity’s #ItsintheBag Christmas campaign is back for 2022, helping women and girls in need. Make someone’s Christmas a little bit brighter by filling a handbag with personal hygiene items and everyday essentials for women, teens, and mums and babies. Then drop your filled handbag to any Bunnings store from November 18 through to November 27. Donated bags will be distributed to Share the Dignity’s 3000 charity partners across Australia to help women and girls experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough over Christmas. Visit sharethedignity.org.au/ itsinthebag for more information and suggested items to donate.

Quiet achievers

Make your garden a lush and verdant haven with these low-noise, cordless garden tools

The Ryobi 36V hedge trimmer is ideal for trimming both coarse and finer foliage, plus it gives an even finish every time

1

Spring into action to create outdoor areas that are irresistibly inviting. Ryobi’s 36V power garden range makes it so simple to keep your greenery pristine – you’ll never have to worry about petrol emissions or trailing extension cords. All these tools feature a push-button start and, because they utilise the same 36V cordless platform, you’ll only need one charger and battery to power your whole collection.

ABOVE THE LAWN

Tackle long grass on lawns big or small with a Ryobi 36V HP™ 46cm 6.0Ah Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower Kit Lightweight and powerful, it’s easy to manoeuvre. Once the mowing is done, just fold down the handle to stow it.

STRAIGHT AND NARROW

Redefine the edges of your lawn with the Ryobi 36V 4.0Ah 40cm Straight Shaft Brushless Cordless Line Trimmer Kit. The performance of its 710W motor is equivalent to a 25cc petrol engine, and it offers two speed ranges plus a variable-speed trigger for total trimming control.

QUIET ACHIEVER

The once-deafening noise of clearing fallen leaves can become a hushed low-impact maintenance task with the Ryobi 36V HP™ 730CFM Whisper Blower. With its powerful jet fan, its performance rivals that of petrol-powered blowers, yet it’s so quiet you’ll be able to carry out your work at any time of the day.

CUTTING HEDGE

Featuring both saw-cut and fine-cut blades, the Ryobi 36V Cordless 60cm Hedge Trimmer 2.0Ah Kit neatly sculpts any hedge, regardless of foliage size. Its hedge-sweep attachment clears clippings on the go, and the rear handle can be rotated 45° and 90° to either side for easy vertical or diagonal trimming.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear. When using a hedge trimmer, wear gloves and eye protection and always stand on a steady, level surface.

MAGIC CASTLE

Inspire storytelling while spreading Christmas cheer with a whimsical front-yard installation, highlighted at night with a solar spotlight!

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (mask, ear and eye protection)

n Quick-grip clamps

n Pair of sawhorses

n Tape measure and pencil

n Jigsaw

n Framing square

n Drill with 54mm holesaw, 2.5mm and driver bits

n Cloths

n Mini roller with spare covers and tray

n Small paintbrush

n 2440mm x 1220mm x 12mm marine plywood•

n 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block

n Undercoat primer

n Exterior paint in various colours (we used British Paints Atrium Light and Dulux Basketweave Beige)

n Clear epoxy adhesive

n Three 1250mm metal garden stakes

n Six 6mm copper saddle clips

n 6G x 12mm stainless steel pan head screws

1 Clamp a 2440mm x 1220mm sheet of 12mm marine plywood on a pair of sawhorses and cut in half with a jigsaw to create two squares. On one piece, use a framing square to mark horizontal and vertical centre-lines.

2 To draw the towers, mark 75mm either side of the vertical centre-line and 150mm in from the edges. Mark triangles for roofs, and 100mm x 54mmwide windows. Cut around the towers and along the horizontal line with a jigsaw.

GIANT FLOWERS & TOADSTOOLS

Use your plywood offcuts to make these…

Mark 1m x 50mm-wide stems with leaves either side. To make flowers, mark out a 300mmdiametre circle, drawing petals inside. Use holesaw offcuts as the centres.

3 To cut the windows, centre a 54mm holesaw and finish with a jigsaw. From the offcuts, cut extra triangle pieces for the roofs, battlements and a 150mm x 100mm-wide gate. Smooth around all cuts with 180-grit abrasive paper. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

4 With a roller and small brush, apply primer and two coats of exterior paint, leaving to dry after each coat. Attach extra pieces with epoxy adhesive. At the back, position three stakes with two 6mm saddle clips each, pre-drilling with a 2.5mm bit to secure with 12mm screws.

6290477.

Cut flower shapes with a jigsaw, then sand and wipe away dust. Apply primer and two coats of exterior paint, leaving to dry after each. Position flowers on the stems, pre-drilling through the centre to secure with 18mm screws. Glue the flower centres over the screws. Behind the stems, secure 1250mm garden stakes with saddle clips and 12mm screws.

Draw toadstool shapes about 350mm x 350mm; cut, sand, paint and use shorter 750mm stakes.

Keep in mind...

n Choose marine plywood and exterior paint to avoid moisture and UV damage.

n Use power tools in a ventilated area clear of distractions and always wear a mask when cutting and sanding timber.

Summer ready

Enjoy fun in the sun, knowing all the practicalities are ticked off your list, with help from Hills and Nylex

The evenings are long, the sun is shining and all we want to do is hang outside with friends and family. But perfect entertaining spaces don’t make themselves, and as well as hosting barbecues, backyards are also the site of less glamorous activities, like laundry and gardening. Hills and Nylex products help you balance summer fun with practical necessities, for a space that’s always primed for entertaining.

LAUNDRY DAY

When you’ve got a busy family, every day is laundry day, but don’t let your chore list hold you back from hosting! While retractable clotheslines can be

rolled away when not in use, what do you do when you’ve got a load of wet washing and guests on the doorstep? The solution is the Hills Portable Clothesline. This is no ordinary fold-up airer; the Hills Portable Clothesline offers a huge 21m of drying space, with enough width for a single sheet and adjustable height levels to allow for longer items. Built from the same weatherproof materials as a regular outdoor version, this ingenious tool is designed to be used inside and out. What’s more, with its nifty wheels, you can easily position it in the sun for speedy drying, then move it out of sight before company calls.

CHORE LEAVE

If you need to press pause on your summer fun to launder clothes, at least you can do it in style. Hills is the master of marrying form and function. The Hills Foldable Laundry Basket features a strong, lightweight bamboo frame and waterproof fabric, making it equally suitable for lugging wet sheets or serving as stylish storage! The Hills Premium Laundry Trolley is as good as an extra set of hands, making it so much easier to wheel wet washing to the line and giving your back a break from stooping and lifting. Finish the job with Hills’ ergonomic and slick-looking pegs, which are built to last. Pair your basket with a matching Hills Bamboo Laundry Hamper for a coordinated look.

BEAT THE HEAT

As much as we want to spend every moment outside, sometimes the heat of high summer is just too much – or is it? With a few minutes of effort, you can hook up your home with a Nylex Misting System. Attach it to a standard hose, use the adjustable Slip-Lok fittings to direct the water where you want it to go, then enjoy the blessedly cool relief. The Nylex Misting System can drop the temperature by up to 10°C, making yours the coolest backyard in the street.

WELL WATERED

For healthy gardens and a lush, green lawn, you need good watering tools. Nothing slows down watering like a hose that stubbornly curls, so the first thing on your summer prep shopping list should be a kink-resistant hose like the Nylex Flextreme. Another way to avoid kinks – while looking good, too! – is with the Nylex Auto-retractable Hose Reel, which smoothly winds the hose back into the sleek housing.

Hook either of these hoses up to the Nylex Oscillating Sprinkler Plus, which delivers even water distribution to an area of up to 170sqm, so you’ll have the lawn watered and be back to lounging in a shady spot in no time.

Alush green lawn is an invitation to step outside. But if neglect or this year’s weather events have left the grass looking worse for wear, it might be time to renovate or even replace your front or backyard lawn. Follow these expert tips to restore your turf to lush glory.

From the ground up

There are two ways to start a lawn from scratch: sowing seed or laying turf. Munns lawn specialist Steve Jackson says each has its pros and cons: “Seed is economical, great for large areas or repairing small patches, but it can take months for the grass to establish, and you need to stay on top of weeds.” For instant impact, choose turf. “It comes at a greater cost, but there’s a bigger range of grass varieties to choose from and, depending on conditions, the lawn can establish in a few weeks,” he says.

Before you start, Steve recommends creating a solid foundation so roots can establish themselves properly. “Clear the area of weeds, stones and other debris,” he says. “If your soil is clay-based, work in gypsum to assist with drainage. For sandy soils, add organic matter to help improve structure and retain moisture.”

For both methods, watering is key. “Do not allow the soil around germinating seeds or turf roots to dry out,” warns Steve. “They will die and you’ll be left with a patchy lawn.”

Maintaining the green

Keeping grass in shape requires regular care throughout the year. Apply a lawn-specific granular fertiliser in spring, summer and autumn. To give it a boost, particularly during periods of active growth, supplement with a liquid fertiliser between those feeds.

Roundup ready to use lawn weedkiller, $44.95/2.5L, I/N: 0260289

Mowing regularly results in healthy, thick lawn, which also helps keep weeds out. Steve recommends only trimming one-third the length of the grass blade. “Removing too much of the leaf blade stresses the lawn,” he explains. In winter, growth slows – except if you have a cool-season grass, like perennial rye or tall fescue – so raise your mower a few notches. Aerating, dethatching (removing any buildup of dead organic matter) and top dressing are typically done in spring, if needed. 

ECO-FRIENDLY LAWN TIPS

n Choose the ideal type of grass for your region (see following page). “While a cool-climate grass can grow in a hot climate, it requires a lot of water throughout summer, so picking the right type of lawn for your area is the best way to be watersmart,” says Steve Jackson.

n Horticulturist Rachel Okell of Our Green Sanctuary (ourgreensanctuary. com) recommends applying an organic lawn food at least once – but ideally two to three times – a year. “It improves soil structure which, in turn, helps to keep the lawn healthy,” she says.

n To maximise water efficiency, install irrigation with a timer. Horticulturist Steve Halliday of Sydney Living Museums (sydneylivingmuseums.com.au) advises setting it to water in the evening or early morning. “This ensures water isn’t wasted through evaporation,” he explains.

n Train your lawn to use less water by watering less often, but for longer, to encourage deep root growth, says Steve Jackson. Check your local council for watering restrictions and rostering days that may apply in your local area.

Top dressing, or spreading a thin layer of sandy soil over the grass, “improves drainage and nutrient retention and helps to even out the lawn,” says horticulturist Steve Halliday

As Steve Halliday explains, “Aerating or coring helps decompact the soil, allowing water, air and nutrients to get to the roots. This is especially useful in areas with heavy foot traffic or clay-based soils.” Dethatching also aids lawn health. “Over time, dead grass matter (thatch) builds up under the lawn and can create water absorption and disease issues,” he says. “Dethatching can be done with specialised machinery or a garden fork and rake.” Once a lawn revamp is complete, he recommends you lightly feed and top dress: “Apply the top dress evenly and thinly, raking through until you can see the grass.” Water it in well and continue to water the lawn regularly.

Intruder alert

Weeds and pests are part and parcel of keeping a lawn. If you spy weeds, Steve Halliday advises taking swift action. “Manually remove weeds by hand or with a selective herbicide that is safe for your lawn type,” he says.

Common lawn pests such as curl grubs, army worm and sod webworm can be hard to spot, but irregular patches of dead grass are a good indicator. Treat with lawn-specific insecticide.

BLADES OF GLORY

Greenkeeper success depends on selecting the right grass species, so pick one that’s ideally suited to your climate and conditions

LEFT Cyclone lawn aeration sandals, $34.90, I/N: 0098158

Buffalo A popular warm-climate grass that will tolerate up to 70 per cent shade. Self-repairing, so ideal for children and pets.

Perennial ryegrass

Fine-leaved coolclimate pick that is often used in lawn seed blends. Grows quickly and acts as a ‘nurse crop’, providing green cover while other seeds germinate.

Zoysia Slower growing than most warm-season lawns, but less mowing and maintenance is required. Soft to touch, and copes well with wear and tear.

Tall fescue A tough, cool-climate species that maintains its green coat almost yearround, especially in cool-cold climates. Extra watering is needed in summer if grown in warmer regions. Highly shade tolerant.

Keep in mind...

n If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment.

n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.

Couch This hardwearing, warmclimate option grows best in full sun.

Well-loved for its fine, soft-underfoot texture and highly tolerant of low mowing – perfect for achieving a manicured, golfcourse green look.

GRASS ACTION

THINK YOUR LAWN IS BEYOND HELP? HERE’S WHAT TO DO IF IT’S...

1

WATERLOGGED

“If lawn is submerged for a couple of days but drains away shortly after, you’re not likely to have any problems,” says Steve Jackson. “Once water subsides, aerating and lightly top dressing will help it breathe again.” If there is a systemic problem with waterlogged soil, he recommends installing drainage. “Lawn can only tolerate wet feet for so long and will suffer in the long run if the problem isn’t addressed,” he says.

2

DRY AS A BONE

The lawn may look mostly dead, but if there’s any hint of green, there’s hope. “Lawn is quite resilient and can often bounce back,” says Steve Halliday. “Give it a drink and watch to see if the water soaks in or runs off – if it runs off, the soil has become waterrepellent or hydrophobic.” Apply a soil wetter.

3

HARD-PACKED

“A compacted soil prevents water and nutrients from reaching lawn roots,” explains Rachel Okell. “Use a corer to remove plugs of soil from the ground and top dress with good-quality sand.”

4

SADLY NEGLECTED

Cut back an overgrown lawn in stages, so you can assess the situation. “If it can be saved, remove weeds, aerate, dethatch, feed and top dress,” says Steve Halliday.

Keep a close eye on your lawn during growing seasons and monitor for potential problems, so you can nip them in the bud before they progress 1 Holman gear drive sprinkler head on base, $24.49, I/N: 0131810. 2 Munns Professional ‘Green Dominator’ lawn fertiliser concentrate, $33.15/1L, I/N: 0190814. 3 Cyclone timber handle long thatching rake, $64.90, I/N: 0318002. 4 Pope small garden hose reel with 10m x 8mm hose, $39, I/N: 0281648. 5 Scotts handheld fertiliser spreader in Green, $24.59, I/N: 3351482. 6 Yates ‘Grub Kill & Protect’ for lawns insecticide, $21.41/750g, I/N: 0207186. 7 Trojan all steel spiked aerator, $30.55, I/N: 0131548. 8 Seasol lawn top dress mix, $8.17/25L, I/N: 0274165. SAFE

You might have the world’s toughest deadlock on your front door, but it won’t be much good if you’re inadvertently giving potential thieves other chances and reasons to break in. Neighbourhood Watch Week and Crime Prevention Week (November 7-13) is an excellent opportunity to turn your attention to security and explore potential upgrades, from simple but effective tweaks to the latest security tech. LOW-IMPACT UPGRADES

Even the simplest changes can be effective deterrents to potential intruders. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED, see box opposite) is intended to make your home less attractive to burglars, and harder for them to get away with breaking into.

Eyes on the prize

Kristy Cianci of The Design Partnership (thedesignpartnership.com.au) advises being able to see your yard – and the letterbox. “Have visual control of your property,” she says. “Install a letterbox that can be securely locked, and have your mail collected while you’re away on holidays.” Protecting physical mail can help prevent identity theft.

Clear sightlines – rather than fortress-like structures – are better on boundaries; for example, a ‘blade’ or picket fence can be an effective barrier, but a tall, solid option (such as brick or steel sheets) could shield criminal activity from view.

Landscape helpers

Choose gravel for your driveway and pathways around your home – it’s impossible to walk on silently, preventing potential lawbreakers from making a stealthy approach. Thorny climbers like bougainvillea around windows and other potential access points don’t just look beautiful, they can also act as living ‘barbed wire’.

Glass houses

Love the idea of letting in light through a glass door but worried about the break-in risk? A security door is an effective way to keep yourself safer, and its visibility to snooping offenders sends a clear message that they should stay away. According to the

Window locks

Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), the most common way of obtaining unwelcome access to a home is through an unlocked door or window – adding window locks is an easy way to make your place more secure.

LEVEL 2 MORE POWER TO YOU

Step up your security with active systems, such as serious locks to stop burglars in their tracks and motion-activated security lights.

Behind closed doors

The front door can be the most common access point for burglars, often because it has been left unlocked. A smart lock, such as one from the Yale Unity series, can be easy to retrofit and provide you with the ultimate in 21st-century protection. Yale’s Eric Sindel says, “When you activate Auto-Lock in the Yale Access App, the lock will use its position sensor to automatically lock the door when closed. The popular Auto-Unlock feature utilises geofencing technology to determine your location and

automatically unlocks your door as you approach, without the need to reach for your keys or even your phone.”

To remotely access these functions and more, add a Yale Connect Bridge (sold separately) to join the lock to your home wi-fi network.

Another pattern identified by the AIC was that those planning to break into a home would first check whether it was occupied. Install a wi-fi-enabled wireless video doorbell that shows you who’s at the door via wi-fi link to your smartphone. With two-way audio, you can ward off any unwanted visitors.

A sense of safety

Solar-powered sensor lights don’t need to be hardwired by a licensed electrician, and plug-in mainspowered models can also make installation a quick and easy DIY job. This safety stalwart makes it impossible for criminals to work under the cover of darkness and can immediately alert you that someone is prowling around your property. Position them over out-ofthe-way access points along the side or rear of your home, so they aren’t triggered by innocent passersby on the public footpath.

BUILT-IN SECURITY

Be safety alert from the start

The way you design your house and garden can work wonders to protect your home – experts call this Crime Prevention

Through Environmental Design.

“CPTED is not a foolproof system, but the goal is to make it harder and less rewarding for someone to commit a crime,” explains Kristy Cianci. “These principles are easiest to apply during the design phase of your house and landscaping, but you can do a number of things retrospectively,” she says.

Kristy recommends keeping the space between the lower limbs of trees and shrubs clear, so there are views from the street to the house, and vice versa. “This eliminates pockets

Incorporate home safety features into the design of a reno or new build

in the garden where someone can hide and watch your activities,” she explains. A well-maintained fence can send an instant visual message. “Territorial reinforcement and space management are also key aspects

of CPTED,” Kristy says. “Make it clear what’s private and what’s public using landscaping features such as fences and paths, so it’s immediately obvious if someone is trespassing.”

TOP-NOTCH SECURITY STRATEGIES

Take your home security to the max with tech-led solutions that will deter crime and ensure there are always eyes on your property.

Get smart

A smart lock (see page 48 for how to install your own) and video doorbell are just two ways to harness the power of wi-fi connectivity. Many wireless alarm systems are designed for easy DIY set-up, and feature motion detectors as well as sensors that alert you when a door or window is opened. Add extra sensors or cameras that work with the base station and you can monitor the whole array from your smartphone, whether you’re home or away.

Smart light globes can help to fool would-be intruders, as they can be set to switch on and off to mimic your usual daily patterns, even when you’re not there.

The eyes have it “Cameras are only effective [in crime prevention] when they are monitored and are often used retrospectively to report a crime,” says Kristy Cianci. This is why app-controlled smart cams can be such good preventive measures; some models can send a

push notification to your smartphone when they detect movement.

For the highest resolution around the exterior of your home, choose a 4K security camera. If you need surveillance in a large area that requires very bright light, opt for a unit with an onboard floodlight. And to ensure footage is safely kept, you can subscribe to a cloud storage service.

Arlo Secure, for example, costs from $4.99 per month for a single camera, or $14.99 per month for unlimited cameras. As Brad Little from Arlo explains, “Arlo Secure plans provide smart, AI-powered video cloud storage that’s designed to deliver a seamless home security experience with interactive alerts on activity such as motion and sound, object detection and more. This offers additional protection against theft of locally stored footage because

videos are stored in a secure, private cloud for 30 days.” Another option is to use a home automation station such as Google Nest Hub to network individual devices, ranging from door sensors to cameras to smart globes. This lets you establish a professionallevel integrated system which you can control from your smartphone or tablet, helping to keep your home safe and secure.

Keep in mind...

Home, smart home

Imagine always being greeted with a warm welcome and a helping hand, by your own home. With Yale smart locks and the Yale Access app, your home becomes your partner in its own security, giving you ultimate control over who crosses your threshold and helping you out every step of the way.

OPEN SESAME

Eliminate the key fumble and let Yale give you the five-star treatment, with the Yale Access app’s auto-lock and unlock modes. With auto-lock activated, as you leave your home, the app says, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got this’, and locks the door behind you. Using geofencing technology, the app sets itself to ‘Away’ mode, ready for the auto-unlock to work its magic. Then, on your return, your phone will start looking for your lock within 200 metres of home, automatically unlocking it when you’re five metres away. The app then returns to ‘Home’ mode, which turns off auto-unlock while you’re home.

HIGH-TECH UPGRADE

Update your front door with a new smart lock that allows entry with the tap of a phone or the touch of a finger. A built-in video shows who’s calling and two-way audio lets you chat to them without even opening the door.

$3.44/pack of 3, I/N: 4061760. 3 Craftright 230mm magnetic torpedo level, $2.99, I/N: 5660641. 4 Lockly ‘Vision’ smart lock deadbolt with video doorbell in Satin Nickel, $599, I/N: 0201412. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

1 Remove the old lock and strike plate, clean all over with wipes and wedge the door open. Use a flathead screwdriver to extend the deadbolt, position it in the door with the slot facing upright and secure the plate with supplied screws. Tip: Use a screwdriver rather than a drill to avoid stripping.

2 Position the exterior assembly with the vertical blade through the deadbolt. Remove the adhesive backing and hold a level against the lock to keep it straight while pressing it onto the door. Attach the mounting plate inside with the supplied 60mm screws.

3 For a left-swinging door, move the sensor wire pad to the right-hand channel with mini pliers. Hold the interior assembly close to the door while clipping the plug into the socket, then twist the cable screws together and push the cable under the eyelet hook.

4 With the blade in the turn shaft, secure the assembly using the supplied 12mm screws. Add the supplied batteries and initiate a self-check with the program button. Install the strike plate in the jamb and check the bolt opens smoothly, using a hammer and chisel to adjust the recess if needed.

5 Snap the door sensor to fit and position the jamb sensor so they’re no more than 20mm apart. Plug in the wi-fi hub and register the lock in the app to activate the warranty, following the prompts to set up codes, fingerprint access, video capture and to operate from a smartphone.

You can also organise with Bunnings to have your new smart lock installed by a licensed locksmith. Simply select a compatible door lock in store, grab an installation voucher then head to the Special Orders Desk to pay and arrange an install date.

PARTY TIME!

TRY THESE SIMPLE TRICKS AND SOIREE STYLING TIPS TO TURN YOUR KITCHEN INTO AN ENTERTAINER’S DREAM

Most regular kitchens work just fine for family dinners and intimate parties, but catering for a crowd might push them beyond their limit.

Yet with a few adjustments and clever hacks, you can turn your everyday kitchen into the ultimate entertaining space, take the stress out of big gatherings and preserve your reputation as the hosts with the most.

Curate pantry contents

Extend the island

ABOVE A versatile seating/serving area is the perfect place to perch during parties!

Magic up more space

Look at where your existing kitchen might not be meeting its potential. Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen suggests retrofitting handy devices to create additional storage and, if space permits, adding to the benchtop. “Extend an island to create an area dedicated to grazing and serving food,” she says. “When you’re finished entertaining, it can act as a second dining space or food prep area.”

To temporarily tweak a kitchen into an entertainer’s space, annex territory from other rooms. Move plastic ware or small appliances from a cupboard to the garage or linen cupboard to make way for trays and platters. Use the laundry as a storage spot or dumping ground for dirty dishes – a large sink helps when cleaning up!

Sort food storage

Run down your stocks of food in the weeks prior to an event to create extra storage space. Use up, consolidate and tidy pantry items to buy you extra clearance – and take the opportunity to make sure your pantry hardware is working hard enough.

“Pull-out wireware is a great way to add an extra layer of organisation to your pantry,” says Lisa. Adding a few shelf stackers helps to utilise unused cupboard

height. Finding more room in the fridge is trickier, so call a good old esky into service. Blocks of ice will last longer than cubes – DIY blocks in old ice-cream containers ahead of time. Store food in containers or on racks, so they don’t get soggy from melting ice.

Audit all servingware

Take out all your platters and serving bowls, give them a good wash, and decide if you need to upgrade or increase your inventory.

Do the same with crockery, glassware and cutlery. Bin chipped and broken pieces and make sure there’s enough for everyone. Don’t stress if they’re not matching – mixing eclectic pieces from different sets in varied sizes but in a consistent colour palette can look great!

“Rotating baskets in corner cabinets create better access for storing large bowls, platters, appliances or even pantry items”

Kit Out timber picnic tray table, $24, I/N: 0212277. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered

MAKE YOUR OWN SERVINGWARE STATION

To maximise space on a busy benchtop, set up a station where guests can help themselves to all they’ll need before approaching the food. Assemble a timber picnic tray table according to instructions, then corral lightweight glasses and cutlery in a stylish container or jar on the top and stack napkins and plates underneath. Our tray (left) is 610mm long and allows for two plate stacks. Afterwards, fold up the legs and store it away, ready for your next gathering, picnic or servingware station needs! Tip: This versatile piece can also pull duty as a shelf-stacker when required, to help fill unused space on higher shelves.

However, you don’t want foot traffic around the stove. “Set up a self-service food and drinks area. Preferably this would be located on a kitchen island or within close proximity to the kitchen, but not directly inside it,” says Lisa.

Ease the cooking pressure

A successful gathering is one where the host enjoys themselves too, so steer clear of overly complicated dishes. “Keep your recipes simple!” advises Silvia. “Assemble a large antipasto board and keep it in the fridge to avoid cluttering your space.” And use the barbecue – firing up the grill tends to draw a crowd and inspire offers of assistance!

Move it outside

Take advantage of warm weather and long evenings and have the shindig outdoors! You can still create a semi-formal atmosphere, even with folding chairs at trestle tables. Style editor Tilly Roberts suggests using pretty fabric, tablecloths or even new drop sheets to cover the table. “Set the mood with fairy lights or candles – citronella ones help keep mosquitoes away, too!” Never leave lit candles unattended, especially if children and pets are around.

Invite guests in

Don’t exclude the chef and host – when guests first arrive, bring the party to you! “If your kitchen is open plan, gather everyone around to keep the chef company,” says Tilly. “Set up stools, and face lounge or dining furniture towards the kitchen.” Use visual cues to mark the kitchen as ‘open to the public’. Silvia Colloca, author of The Italian Home Cook, says, “Light a candle, pick flowers and display fresh produce like tomatoes, apples and lemons on platters, to create an enticing space.” Serve snacks or pre-dinner drinks on the island bench.

Raise a smile with gelato-like pastel shades from Dulux’s new Revive palette: Perplexed on the island and Paper Brown on the feature wall

Colour often reflects how we want to live and feel, whether it’s at home or at work. And perhaps now, more than ever, colour is having an important influence on our lives. As Dulux colour expert

Andrea Lucena-Orr says, “We have all reacted to the upheavals of the last couple of years in different ways – some people crave lightness and whimsy, while others seek order and reassurance.”

Here, we look at what hues will set the scene for 2023 and show you how to make an impact – whether you decide to go bold, or stay on the more reserved side of the spectrum.

The new palettes

According to the Taubmans trend report for 2022-2024, we’re set to see “a celebration of bright, bold colours at a time when their positive influence is needed most”. The Chromatic Joy palette of playful hues, which suggests optimism and positivity, is key to reflecting this.

Rachel Lacy, colour category manager at Taubmans, explains, “The pared back, bright white spaces of minimalist design make way for comforting and joyful colour. Riot of Sunlight, Glowing Bars, Beautiful and Bright, Torc of Gold, Early Leaf and Everything Is Going To Be Alright are all perfect choices for bursts of colour.”

UPDATE IT LATEST TRENDS

Mood-lifting hues also emerge in Dulux’s 2023 Revive palette, including rose pink, breezy blue, sunshine yellow, emerald green, violet and burnt orange. Described as “retro futuristic”, they make a statement – so are ideal for accent walls.

Melanie Stevenson of Porter’s Paints reveals the brand’s oceanic hues of calming blues and greens “inspired by sea and sky” are trending. “Colours of the ocean, from palest greens to saturated jewel tones, not only deliver serenity and calm, but also a sense of optimism and restoration,” she says.

Marine blues, gentle greens and accents of deep garnet are also reflected in the Dulux 2023 Balance palette. “Balance is very much inspired by a ‘less is more’ philosophy,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr. These colours are the perfect complement to luxe textures including velvet and silk, and furniture with exaggerated, curved silhouettes.

Warm, earthy tones of sandstone, moss, wasabi, muddied yellow-green and charcoal also come through in the Dulux 2023 Connect palette. These colours may appeal to those who seek “calm, comfort and a simple approach to living,” explains Andrea.

Choosing your shade

If you’re not confident with embracing colour, choosing it and using it can be hard. “Look at the area you want to paint and explore how you and your family use and enjoy the space,” explains Rachel Lacy. “If it’s a bedroom, you will be looking for a different feel compared to a living room or bathroom.” She suggests seeking

inspiration online. Andrea agrees and says people will usually either be drawn to images showing light and airy spaces or, conversely, darker, cosy spaces and colours that draw you in. “Then you have to take the functional use of the space into consideration,” she says. “You would probably want a working room (such as a kitchen or laundry) to be light and bright to enhance the work and time spent in this area. Whereas in a bedroom or living room you may want to feel secure and cocooned, hence a darker colour may be perfect for these spaces.”

“There are some wonderful uplifting, brighter colours coming through that are inspired by fashion and technology – they just shine happiness”

Colour conundrums

What if you love colour but are not sure how to use it? The easiest place to begin is often a bedroom, suggests Andrea. “This personal space is not an area your guests walk through, so you can completely colour without barriers or external critique,” she says. Start with a wall behind your bedhead as the focal point.

“Another great area is your front door, as it’s a quick project and creates a wonderful first impression for anyone entering,” she says.

Use pops of colour in unexpected places, suggests Rachel. “Painting a window reveal [the surface inside the architrave] is a lovely way to bring colour into a space. It looks considered and gives a feeling of confidence,” she says. “The inside of a wardrobe, cupboard or a pony wall [short wall] or vestibule can become a wonderful pop of colour that will bring joy each time you see it.”

Light matters

This will have a big impact on colour, so it’s vital to study how light works throughout the day in the space. Use a test pot to paint

a large card to move around. But don’t line tester colour cards up beside each other as this will influence their appearance.

“You also need to view colour at different times of the day with natural lighting, to see it in full sun and shadows or even in diffused light, as well as under artificial lighting at night which can make a huge impact,” says Andrea. “Consider any surrounding colour and existing fixtures and fittings, such as your sofa, curtains or blinds, flooring, as well as any kitchen or bathroom materials, like stone, tiles, laminates etc.”

Texture effect

Surfaces will also affect colour – they absorb and reflect light in different ways, so should be considered in your final palette choice. “Texture often makes the colour have more depth as it changes the light-reflectance qualities,” says Andrea. “You also get shadows interacting with the colour, so it can change when viewed from different angles. It often gives a more natural look to the colour as well, especially with those earthy and muddied colours.”

Budding interior designer and mumof-three Alyce, from NSW, found the power of knowledge invaluable for her first bathroom renovation. “I went into the project feeling very educated and informed on the topic - I did a lot of research, reading reviews and watching tutorials,” she says. “This really built up my confidence – and I thought, if other people can do it, I can do it too!” Over four weeks, Alyce completed the makeover during her spare time, turning a plain, dark and tired ensuite into a contemporary and functional space and landing her a finalist spot in this year’s Bunnings’ #DIYJuly competition.

The renovation budget of $1,200 covered wall, tile and cabinetry paint and equipment, a new mixer tap, accessories and potted plants

Essential prep

Alyce’s first step was to strip out everything that wasn’t fixed: towel rails, mirror, blind and artwork. She cleaned the walls and floors with sugar soap, patched holes with a moistureand mould-resistant filler and removed old silicone from around the shower frame and tiled area. Then she painted the walls, trims and door in Dulux Lexicon Half, providing a neutral backdrop for the colour to come.

A vibrant splash

Adding wow factor was easy and economical with paint. “We have a very dark house and I’m going through it and adding a lot of natural textures and earthy tones,” Alyce explains. “I wanted to bring that into the ensuite as well and I definitely wanted to have a feature wall.”

The earthy clay colour of Dulux Surprise now covers one wall. “I tested two colours –I felt comfortable with one, but went with the second option called Surprise, as it was a little bit out of my comfort zone,” she says. “I like to push my design style a tiny bit and find that generally pays off.”

Alyce revived the vanity cabinet with Dulux Renovation Range in Light Rice, which works well with the feature wall, the white walls and the brass finishes. It also formed a perfect base for greenery and accessories to coordinate with the rest of the house, including bright towels, plants and pots, a bamboo mat and wall art, plus brass hooks and a framed mirror.

Tile transformation

Rather than replace the grey wall tiles, Alyce chose to paint them a glossy white using Dulux’s Renovation Range in Lexicon Half. She watched several Dulux website tutorials on how to use the range and bought the right tools, so felt confident and prepared when putting paintbrush to tile. “Everything’s held up beautifully,” she says. “The tiles are perfect no matter how many times we shower. It’s got that lasting result.” Although the floor tiles were left unpainted, she spruced them up with two coats of a grout pen: “The results are incredible!”

Light now bounces around the ensuite, creating a brighter and more spacious room. “I took it one step at a time and it really paid off,” says Alyce. “I’m so pleased with how it turned out – now I want to do the same to the kitchen!” To see more inspiring DIY makeovers, visit workshop.bunnings.com.au.

DIY home and lifestyle blogger Jaharn (smorkitchen.com)

and Jason, a teacher, love relaxing outdoors with their young children. Having built a new home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, the next step was to landscape the 1200sqm block, with the couple planning a native garden that pays homage to their favourite coastal pathways and national parks.

Grant Boyle of Fig Landscapes (figlandscapes.com.au) was briefed to create a garden that required minimal maintenance and water. “We wanted to create different zones that maximised the land and how we use the garden throughout the seasons, yet didn’t require us to be constantly gardening,” says Jaharn.

Find inspiration with tips and ideas from this easy-care garden design.

Soil prep

Sandy soil was the biggest challenge here. Beds were enriched with organic compost, dug down 300mm and topped with mulch. Grant suggests assessing the condition of your soil with a pH testing kit. “This will help you determine if your soil is more alkaline or acidic. While different plants favour various conditions, generally you want a reading between 5-7,” he explains. “If the pH is above seven your soil is alkaline, so balance it by adding lime. If it’s below 6.5, it’s acidic and will benefit from adding compost.”

Choose natives

Many Australian native plants are inherently hardy and can tolerate dry spells. “Species endemic to your local area have evolved to suit the climate and by planting them in your garden you’re creating a natural habitat that will attract native animals and

LEFT “When choosing plants and planning where they’ll go, consider concentrated repeat plantings or clustering species with the same water and sun requirements,” suggests Grant. “This achieves a great look and helps ensure water is directed where it’s needed most.” Here, casuarina ‘Cousin It’ cascades over a retaining wall. BELOW “Every weekend you’ll find us cooking over the fire pit,” says keen chef Jaharn

birdlife,” says Grant. In this garden, the native palette includes pandanus, casuarina, banksia, Queensland wattle, coastal rosemary (Westringia fruticosa), pig face and creeping boobialla (Myoporum parvifolium).

Ground options

Consider gravelled zones. As Jaharn and Jason love to entertain outdoors, creating a level gravel area where furniture could sit was a practical solution. And unlike lawn, gravel doesn’t require watering. The key is in the prep work, says Grant, who used compacted road base to help keep weeds at bay, topped with 100mm of crushed sandstone. This technique was also used for stairs and paths, which create an easy transition between zones. “To soften the look, I like to plant edges with groundcovers, which are less thirsty than shrubs and, because of their spreading nature, suppress weeds,” he says.

Mulch benefits

A generous layer of mulch helps soil retain nutrients and water longer. For best results, Grant suggests using leaf mulch spread 3-5cm thick. “Unlike pine bark, it replicates what happens in the forest as it breaks down over time, providing nutrients that help build the soil’s profile.” Once Jaharn and Jason’s plants were established, they haven’t required watering by hand in the past three years. “We give the grass a soak in summer and mulch garden beds annually, but our coastal natives can take whatever the weather throws at them,” says Jaharn.

Humble and hardy

Many succulents tolerate sunny, dry conditions. With a huge range of colours and forms, choose varieties that suit the look you want to create, from architectural agave to dustytoned blue chalk sticks.

Fly away

With the weather warming up, it’s time to dust off the barbecue and dine alfresco with family and friends. Unfortunately, where there’s food, there are often flies – those uninvited guests to outdoor gatherings who never know when it’s time to leave. Not only are flies a bother, they’re also unsightly and unhygienic, swarming between bin areas and the meal table. With an EnviroSafe fly trap, you can reclaim your airspace and enjoy fly-free outdoor entertaining, gardening and games with loved ones.

GREATER OUTDOORS

The EnviroSafe fly trap is a cinch to set up. Simply add water and hang it somewhere sunny and out of the wind, perhaps in your pet area, vegie garden or wherever else flies like to hang out. With an impressive 300 square metres of coverage, one trap can keep an average backyard fly-free. If you’re on a larger rural property or farm, consider hanging the jumbo size next to chook sheds, stables or cattle yards.

No chemical pesticides means no harmful toxins around your family, pets or home

NATURAL WINNER

EnviroSafe’s Eco-Bait is made of food-grade materials, so is non-toxic and pesticide-free. That means it’s safe for people and pets, yet irresistible to a range of Australian flies. For even more convenience, Eco-Bait refills are sold separately, so when the fly trap is full, just tip the contents into your compost, replace the Eco-Bait and you’re all set.

LONG-LASTING

The trap has been engineered using UV-stabilised material to withstand

the harsh Aussie sun and last for season after season. Each trap is locally assembled by social enterprises that provide meaningful and continued employment to people living with an intellectual disability. Best of all, the traps are Australian made and 100 per cent recyclable, making them people safe, pet safe and planet safe.

1Create a warm welcome

Impress visitors with an inviting entrance. A fresh coat of paint on the fence or door is a quick way to make an impact – get inspired by the latest colour trends from page 61.

Make light work of fence painting with a sprayer, and choose a colour that sets the tone for the rest of your house. Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says, “Neutral shades like white, beige, greige and grey are eternally popular due to their easy versatility and clean and classic look. For the front door, a feature colour like Outrageous Red [pictured previous page] is a bright, bold statement, whereas

BELOW Prep the fence for painting by giving it a light sand with an ergonomic hand sander

deeper hues in rust, burgundy, greens or blues will create a more reserved effect.” Enhance your refreshed look with a potted plant by the door teamed with a new outdoor mat.

2Add some sparkle

String lighting is an easy way to create ambience, and Christmas is the perfect time for a glow-up. Peter Loftus at Lytworx says, “Tiny twinkling LED solar fairy lights can be used almost anywhere to highlight garden features or define an entertaining space.” With their warm white globes, festoon lights also create an instant festive vibe. Choose from multiple options, such as different globe sizes and colours, dimmable modes and a variety of power sources including solar, low-voltage, battery and USB. Peter suggests draping them from branches or scalloping them under a pergola roof to gently illuminate an outdoor area. “For extra wow factor, layer a combination of fairy and festoon lights,” he says. “Together they create a stunning jewel effect.”

If you’re after a streamlined, ultra-modern look, strip lighting is a great option. With adhesive backing and clips, these can be run under kitchen benches, around a bedroom wall or in

covered outdoor areas. The colour, brightness and modes of some models can also be controlled via an app or a smart home assistant.

Conjure an enchanting feel inside with warm white wire fairy lights or effervescent multi-coloured options. “With their flexibility and battery-powered versatility, they can be easily entwined around a mirror, bookcase, stair rail or delicately laid around a floral summer centrepiece,” says Peter.

3 Refresh walls

It’s amazing what a little scrubbing can achieve inside. To brighten up walls that feel neglected or marked, arm yourself with a feather or microfibre duster, microfibre cloths, sugar soap and a microfibre mop, fitted with a fresh pad. Run the duster across ceiling corners and cornices – a cobweb broom will help deal with resident spiders and their homes – then skirting boards. Next, tackle walls with a solution of sugar soap and water.

Use the mop to clean the top half of walls, then a cloth or wipes for the lower half and to target fiddly areas around light switches.

4

Colour in the garden

Pretty up planters and beds with seasonal colour. Bunnings Greenlife buyer Katy Schreuder says, “Perennials such as bougainvillea, hibiscus and crepe myrtle look great in garden beds, while dahlias, petunias, begonias and marigolds are great for pots in a sunny spot. In shadier areas you might like to try impatiens, native violets, hardy outdoor ferns and perennials like gardenia, ‘Mona Lavender’ (Plectranthus), agapanthus and fuchsias.” Stay on top of watering to keep it all looking its best. “Generally speaking, annuals and vegetables will need to be watered every day,” says Katy. “Most perennials and shrubs will cope with being watered every second or third day once established, but always look for signs of water stress and adjust watering intervals accordingly.”

ABOVE Mini pansies are easy to grow from seed and not only put on a lovely garden display, the flowers of edible varieties can also be used in salads and as cake decoration!

5Boost the barbecue

With extra people around, the barbecue is bound for a workout so be sure it’s up for the task. Bunnings barbecue specialist Matthew Hoffman suggests starting with an external scrub using hot soapy water, then removing the grill plates for a clean with a grill brush or scrubber. Inspect the burners to ensure they’re not covered in grease and grime. “Clear out the grease tray and add fresh Fatsorb, and for gas barbecues, check the regulator and hose for any splits or missing seals,” says Matthew. “When reconnecting the regulator to the bottle, use soapy water to check for any leaks at the connections at the bottle and barbecue.”

6Set an alfresco scene

Socialising and relaxing is so much better in a reinvigorated entertaining area. Give paths and patios a pressure clean and treat outdoor furniture to a wash and gentle scrub with detergent. Check the care label to see if you can pop outdoor cushion covers in the washing machine or, if they’re beyond salvation, find out if it’s possible to order replacement covers. Adding a stylish outdoor rug and a scattering of new cushions also gives an instant invitation to settle in.

7Green up outdoor areas

Even just a few plants can revitalise a lifeless corner. On a deck or a patio, Katy Schreuder suggests using as big a pot as you have space for to create maximum impact. “Palms and strelitzias work well in large pots to create a tropical vibe and dwarf bougainvillea will give a lovely display of colour,” she says. For fragrance, Katy recommends pots of small perfumed shrubs such as boronia, pendulous camellia, lavender and geranium. A trio of pots in different sizes with a mix of contrasting plants also looks great. In a tight space, use hanging plants as a cascading verdant backdrop –think trailing devil’s ivy, rhipsalis or hoya.

To grow strong and healthy, plants need sun, water and plenty of nutrients

Grow better

Give your garden soil a healthy boost with Yates

Getting the most out of your garden starts with the soil.

Much like we need a balanced diet to stay healthy, plants require good soil that will give them access to water, nutrients and air. To promote healthy soil and thriving plants, Yates is here to help with Dynamic Lifter Organic Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser as well as its range of specialised plant foods.

SPOIL YOUR SOIL

When it comes to giving your garden some love, start from the ground up and enrich the soil with organic matter. Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser is a rich source of organic matter that’s ideal for nurturing your soil. It’s a blend of composted chicken manure boosted with fish meal, blood and bone and seaweed, compressed into easyto-use pellets. These natural goodies encourage microbial and earthworm activity and promote better root

growth. Yates Dynamic Lifter is perfect for all garden plants!

PERFECT POTS

For growing plants in containers, a quality potting mix is ideal. Yates Premium Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter is specially formulated to have increased water holding capacity and wettability, has added Dynamic Lifter organic fertiliser and is boosted with nutrients to feed potted plants for up to six months. It’s suitable for most indoor and outdoor potted plants, including flowers, shrubs, fruit, trees and vegetables. Nutrients are also important, and Yates Premium Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter contains organic fertiliser for gentle, slow-release feeding.

MULTIPURPOSE SIDE TABLE

Inventively created from an affordable timber panel and dowel, this cute cube can be used as a bedside or side table. Or build two and stack them as a bookcase or display unit!

Countersink the holes from the best side of the panel, so it becomes the outside face, then fill and sand so they practically disappear

Tools & materials

1 Mark up a 1200mm x 300mm timber panel 395mm in from either end to cut the side pieces with a mitre saw. The remaining centre piece is the top. Cut a 25mm dowel piece to 375mm long. Tip: Alternatively, arrange to have the pieces cut in store.

3 On the top piece, use a combination square to mark a line 9mm in from the ends to countersink holes 30mm from the edges and at the centre. Position the top flush with the sides to pre-drill the upper edges of the sides with a 3mm bit. Tip: Mark the top so it repositions over the same holes.

5 Sand over the screws with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove any breakout from the countersinking. Use a scraper to smooth filler into the holes and leave to dry. Tip: Choose a tinted filler to match the timber.

As DIY projects become savvier and more sophisticated, so do the tools, and the Bosch Zamo Set is as clever as they come. This indispensable device uses laser technology, with three handy attachments, to enable you to measure distances, objects and shapes like never before – with a simple press of a button and accuracy up to 20 metres. The Zamo Set will make light work of countless projects around the home. Make any DIY devotee’s Christmas by picking up this perfect gift from Bunnings this festive season.

CURVES ARE COVERED

If you’ve ever struggled to measure irregular or curved surfaces, you’ll love the wheel adaptor, which has been specially designed to digitally measure unusual shapes, as well as freestanding objects. Now you can easily and confidently measure everything from your sofa (to size it up for new upholstery), to cabling lengths for your entertainment system.

MASTER MEASUREMENTS

For a hands-on approach, the compact tape adaptor easily attaches to the Zamo laser, to precisely measure distances, circumferences and objects up to 1.5m. A handy tool to keep in your back pocket, it will help you tackle all sorts of tasks from carpentry to clothing alterations.

LASER LEVELLING

Want to hang your pictures like a pro? With the line adaptor you can project a laser line to ensure perfect horizontal and vertical alignment of artworks, hooks and objects.

QUICK CALCULATING

Gone are the days of scribbling down measurements. With Zamo’s square metre function, a simple double click will multiply the last two measured values to calculate the size of a set area – ideal when working out tiling, flooring, turf or wallpaper quantities.

FOLD-AWAY LUGGAGE RACK

We used an off-the-shelf folding canvas chair for this furniture hack that supports a medium-sized suitcase. If working with a reclaimed piece, adjust the instructions to suit the construction, as some styles already have rails across the base. The key is to dismantle the arms and legs, while keeping the fold-out crossrails attached to the seat supports for the new frame.

With just a little DIY magic, a preloved Mimosa director’s chair is transformed into a luggage stand that tucks away neatly when not in use

Visitors will love having a dedicated bag rack – no more scrabbling around on the floor to find things!

5 Apply adhesive to 8mm fluted dowels, pushing them into the seat grooves to be flush with the ends. Sand over the screws with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout, then smooth the holes with timber filler and leave to dry.

6 Position clamps on the bench to hold the frame open while sanding, rounding over the rail ends slightly and removing excess filler. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth and apply wax with a clean cloth, leaving to dry. Tip: Tinted wax evens out the finish and helps to hide the filler.

1 Slide off the fabric parts and use a screwdriver or drill to loosen the seat braces and dismantle the feet on the back legs. Tip: Keep the two crossrail foldouts assembled with the seat supports joining them.

2 Remove the side frames (arms and legs) and braces, using a 7mm bit to drill into the back of the rivets. Tap away the breakout and washers with a chisel, then position an offcut to pull out the rivets with a claw hammer.

3 Dismantle the side frames by drilling through the dowels with a 5mm bit and tapping the joints apart with a hammer. From these pieces, cut 435mm and 330mm rails with a mitre box and a handsaw to fit across the foldouts.

4 To attach the long rail to the outside of the larger frame and the short rail to the smaller frame, position them 80mm up from the base, drill with a countersinking bit, pre-drill into the frame with a 3mm bit, then secure with 40mm screws.

7 Cut seven 540mm webbing pieces. Apply adhesive into a seat groove, set the webbing evenly along the groove, folding it over and stapling into the side of the seat support. Apply adhesive to the opposite groove, fold over the webbing and secure. Tip: The adhesive will help to prevent fraying.

8 Cut five 720mm webbing pieces. On the smaller frame, tack the ends to the base rail with two vertical staples. Fold the webbing around the rail to hide the ends, securing with three staples. Hold the frame together to fold over and secure the webbing to the opposite rail the same way.

Water ways

How does your garden grow? So much greener, with a retractable hose from Holman

For all that we talk about ‘green thumbs’ and ‘black thumbs’, the real secret to an amazing garden is good tools and – especially in the heat of summer and the height of the growing season – good watering tools.

If it’s quick and easy to whip out the hose and give the garden a spritz, we’re more likely to do so. And as the experts on all things irrigation, this is where Holman comes in.

Holman retractable hoses are a gardener’s best friend. The solid casing protects the hose from the harsh Aussie sun, keeps the hose tidily stored out of the way, and prevents twisting and kinking. Plus, it’s easy to install yourself!

Just choose the hose you need (available in 10m, 20m and 30m lengths for any size of garden) and follow these simple steps*.

1 Pick your spot, making sure the tap-to-reel hose will reach the tap.

2 Using the bracket as a guide, mark the four drill holes with a pencil, then drill the holes with the correct drill bit size (indicated in the instructions).*

3 Insert the wall plugs into the holes, tapping in with a hammer. Screw the bracket into the wall with the four bolts and tighten with a spanner until secure.

Some products are not

4 Remove the mounting tube from the hose reel. Place the hose reel on the bracket, replace the mounting tube and insert the securing pin to lock it into place. Connect the tap-to-reel hose to the garden tap.

And that’s all there is to it! To use the hose, pull it out and tug gently to lock it into place. Then, to retract it, give it another tug and let it retract back into the reel housing. It couldn’t be more simple and satisfying to nurture your thirsty garden.

1 Working on a drop sheet, seal an MDF serving tray using a small 38mm brush to apply two coats of water-based enamel paint, leaving to dry after each coat. Tip: Paint underneath first, leave it to dry, then finish the top and sides.

2 Position mosaics on the base of the tray, cutting the mesh with a utility knife to remove tiles that don’t fit and using the offcuts to fill any gaps. Tape over loose tiles to keep the pattern while flipping them out onto the drop sheet.

3 Run 48mm-wide masking tape around the inside of the tray, about 12mm up from the base, to keep the sides clean. Spread a 10mm-deep layer of combination adhesive-and-grout mix over the base of the tray with a small notched trowel.

4 Press the tiles into place and squeeze more adhesive-andgrout mix over the surface. Working in one direction only, smooth it into the gaps and around the edges with a small rubber squeegee. Leave it to firm up for 15 minutes.

5 Remove excess grout with a damp sponge, continually rinsing it in a bucket of clean water and wringing to remove excess. Remove masking tape and leave to dry overnight. Tip: Avoid catching grout in the gaps by wiping in one direction only until the tiles are clean.

Keep in mind...

6 Polish the tiles with a clean, dry cloth to remove the grout haze that forms. Apply two even coats of tile and grout sealer, leaving to dry thoroughly after each coat. Tip: Using an aerosol application ensures a protective finish that dries quickly.

n When using aerosols, work in a well-ventilated area and wear mask and gloves.

n After applying paint, use plastic wrap to seal the brush between coats and prevent it from drying out.

n Do not place food directly on the sealed tiles; always use a platter or plate.

Petal power

Add vibrant colour to gardens with robust summer blooms

African daisy

The daisy-like blooms of this lowgrowing shrub are available in pink, purple, yellow, orange or cream, with deep purple or yellow centres. The petals may be flat and narrow or resemble fluted spoons. Some forms can spread, so plant in pots or edged beds. Deadhead regularly.

Impatiens

Traditional impatiens (busy lizzie) love shade, while New Guinea impatiens prefer semi-shaded positions. For sunny areas, try SunPatiens. All have single- or bi-coloured blooms in pink, purple, red, coral and cream. Enrich the soil with organic matter and compost.

Frangipani

Frangipani grows into a mediumsized tree up to 8m tall, but dwarf forms are available. The fragrant, waxy blooms come in an array of single- and bi-colour combinations, including the classic white and yellow, pastel pinks or vibrant orange and red. Grow in pots in colder southern parts of the country and move indoors during the winter.

Verbena

Brilliant blooms appear continually throughout the season. Flowers can be single or bi-coloured, in shades of white, pink, red, purple and blue. Position in full sun or part shade in warmer climates and add plenty of organic matter to the soil. Grows well in pots or contained beds.
