ZEST FOR LIFE Select a citrus tree for fruity future harvests

Zest for life

Squeeze the day and plant these citrus stars in your great outdoors now

Dwarf Valencia

This compact tree – up to 2m tall and wide – is perfect for small gardens or large pots. It’s actually a traditional Valencia orange grafted onto dwarfing rootstock, so while the tree is small, the abundant fruit isn’t! Grow in full sun with well-draining soil or in a pot of good-quality mix.

Tahitian lime

With tangy and juicy seedless fruit and nearly thornless branches, this gorgeous feature tree is a popular choice for gardeners. It can grow up to 4m tall and wide, so look for the dwarf form if you prefer a more compact tree. Can tolerate light frost once established.

Eureka lemon

Considered one of the best lemons for flavour, its main crop of mediumlarge fruit appears in winter, with smaller fruit in spring and summer. It grows best in warm, frost-free climes – in cooler zones, look for a cold-tolerant variety like ‘Lisbon’. Plant in full sun in well-draining soil.

Finger lime

The fruit skin and ‘caviar’ pulp are available in many colours including lime green, pink, bright red or golden yellow. It’s a very thorny tree of up to 6m, but can be kept compact with regular pruning. Slow growing, it prefers a warm, frost-free climate. Position in full sun with well-draining soil and protect from strong winds.
