Art Market: Ok in HK ASIA The Hong Kong art fair, which closed last Sunday, has put in an extraordinary growth spurt, mushrooming to 260 exhibitors (from 101 in 2008) and attracting 63,500 visitors – almost 40 per cent up on last year. It brought together most of the world’s major international art galleries and as a result has made a quantum leap in quality – and price points. All the major collectors from the region were there. But this rapid growth comes at a price, and expectations sometimes outstripped the reality. For many of the exhibitors, the fair has become, as Arne Glimcher of Pace Gallery put it, “too huge, and too generic”. While the deal to sell the event to Art Basel only takes effect on July 1, this year’s edition already had a “thick layer of Basel varnish”, according to another. And banishing most of the Asian galleries to a separate section up two escalators did not garner universal approval. “When we started doing the fair, we had Chinese galleries all around us, and that was better,” said Olivier Bélot of Yvon Lambert. As for the much-anticipated mainland Chinese collectors, while they were present, they were not necessarily buying heavily, and many sales were to Americans or Europeans. As for business, the picture was varied. Some dealers sold nothing, but many did very well, and on both floors. Very high-priced works were certainly not flying off the shelves, and Asian buyers were most interested in their own artists. Unsold, for example, was a Warhol/Basquiat collaboration, “China” (1984), tagged at US$6.8m with Bischofberger. But David Zwirner cleaned up, selling Tuymans (for US$1.1m), Abdessemed, Richter and Yan Pei-Ming. Chambers sold a delicate cut-paper panel by Wu Jian’an to the Australian White Rabbit museum (in the US$25,000 range), while Long March Space placed an extraordinary floating sculpture of the Potala by Liu Wei, “Don’t Touch” (2011), with a European buyer for HK$2.5m (about US$320,000). 5 | BURATTI

Johnny Romeo in LA LOS ANGELES Johnny Romeo is currently in Los Angeles trying to become the first Non-US based artist commissioned to incorporate his work into transportation projects throughout Los Angeles County. Johnny Romeo featured in URBAN POP show @ Jeanie Madsen Gallery, Santa Monica, California along with MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” CERN (NYC), David Pompili (Italy) and Jodi Fuchs(LA).
Elton John snaps up a heavyweight work of art VENICE. British musician and art collector Elton John found time for a spot of shopping yesterday in Venice as he toured a show organised by his friend, the Ukrainian billionaire Victor Pinchuk. John and his partner David Furnish visited the Palazzo Papadopoli on the Grand Canal for a private tour of work by artists shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize, a biennial $100,000 award given to a young, international artist by the Pinchuk Art Centre and the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in Kiev. As the singer and his partner surveyed the contemporary art on display in the frescoed halls of the 16thcentury palace, three monumental concrete slabs by the artist Ruben Ochoa from Los Angeles, which appear to have been ripped out of a highway and transposed to the palazzo, caught their attention. Ochoa’s dealer, Susanne Vielmetter, said each concrete sculpture costs $75,000. They were made in Treviso, near Venice, for the art prize exhibition. John and Furnish are major buyers of contemporary photography and have built a private gallery to display their collection at their home in Windsor, near London. John also serves on the board of the Future Generation Art Prize.
Many sellers in the State consistently miss out. “We believe the establishment of The Collector’s Room will help remedy this situation for Western Australians while adding a more personalised and immediate trading option,” says Gary Kay. Together, the three partners have over 40 years experience in the art business and have mounted some of WA’s most commercially successful exhibitions. “Through our extensive connections we will be able to sell art with the utmost discretion and also provide a service which will avoid the usual risks and delays of selling through an auction process”, says Linton Partington. “The buyer and the seller are always unsure of many variables in an auction, especially the price. If an artwork doesn’t sell it can also become tainted unfairly and our aim is to take away any uncertainty”. View information at www.collectorsroom.com.au

The Collector’s Room hits the mark PERTH Three of Perth’s leading art businessmen have joined forces to offer a new service to the State’s growing market of art collectors. Robert Buratti, Linton Partington and Gary Kay launched The Collector’s Room this week to offer a viable alternative to selling and buying works by leading Australian artists on the secondary market. The Australian fine art auction market turned over $103 million in 2010 with the lion’s share going to three major auction houses operating out of Sydney. With only a handful of auctions staged each year in Western Australia, there is a huge amount of competition between sellers to have their artwork placed into the sale room.

REDUX
the art of david spencer
“This is my 6th solo exhibition and I’ve never felt more inspired. It’s a combination of my age and that my life seems to be at ease as ideas flow from my hands to the canvas. REDUX is a exhibition showing not only new paintings, but old paintings I’ve rescued from my garage and re-invented. Revitalised. A co-evoluton that has excited a new approach and confidence with my work. Which I think leaves an impression that my art and myself, like all things, needs a fresh coat of paint from time to time.” David Spencer
David Spencer’s new exhibition, and his sixth solo show entitled, REDUX, will preview in Perth from June 17 before its national release in Queensland on July 9. David is already acknowledged as one of Western Australia’s most promising young artists and is developing a keen following among a number of Australia’s well known collectors. In this exhibition he has included new works as well as rescuing some of his older works and re-inventing them for a show that already has people talking. “I felt it was the right time to revive some works I had put aside and to give them a new life because I have never felt as inspired as I do now. My ideas are flowing easily from my hands to the canvas”, he says.
7 | BURATTI
This is a new approach for Spencer which has resulted in some stunning new work according to Robert Buratti who has represented Spencer for 5 years. “We called the show REDUX meaning ‘that which has been brought back or revived’ because David has been motivated by old canvases in his garage”, says Buratti. Spencer’s dramatic art features bright colours, recurring symbols and patterns. He is also often inspired by streetscapes, the modern industrial world, what he sees around him and sometimes what he picks up on his walks. “I feel like I have been revitalized for this show and I am very excited and proud of the work I have created”, says Spencer This revitalization is certainly attracting interest and strong demand in his home State of Western Australia. “I hope people like the fact that my art, like myself, like all things needs a fresh coat of paint from time to time”, he says.

Margaret Loy Pula Introducing one of Australia’s most promising new indigenous artists. Margaret Loy Pula hails from an incredibly distinguished artistic family. She is the daughter of well known Aboriginal artist Kathleen Petyarre and the mother of Abie Loy Kemarre, a rising star from the Utopia region. Both Abie and Margaret were taught to paint by Kathleen. Her aunties are the Petyarre sisters - Ada, Nancy, Myrtle and Gloria all of whom are established artists and whose works hang in collections both in Australia and overseas. Margaret paints her father’s dreaming and the stories that she depicts include country, bush food and ceremonial designs. Her main story is the “Anatye” or bush potato dreaming which is portrayed using a series of fine, microscopic dots.

SINCITY
Johnny Romeo returns to Perth for round two
Johnny Romeo is an Australian born painter. His work is critically acclaimed in its attempt to represent a visual type of poetic and rhythmic blending of word, symbol and image. The last two years have cemented Romeo’s position as a leader in the Australian pop art scene and there is an ever growing waiting list for his new works. He was asked by Foxtel to complete a major commission work measuring 3 by 9metres to adorn Sydney Harbour for the launch of the arts channel, STVDIO, and most recently was featured in a major pop and street art exhbition at the Jeanie Madsen Gallery, Santa Monica, California alongside MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” CERN (NYC), David Pompili (Italy) and Jodi Fuchs(LA). Q. What ideas are you dealing with in this latest exhibition? SIN CITY is loosely based on the diverse and dynamic music scene in L.A. In particularly, The Strip: The Sunset Strip. I don’t know of any other city that has a rock centre like L.A does. New York doesn’t have one. On today’s Strip, all within late-night stumbling distance of one another stand the Whisky, Roxy, Viper Room, Key Club, Cat Club and House of Blues. In terms of Rock ‘n’ Roll history, THE STRIP rocks pop 11 | BURATTI
culture. Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty has played there. The Rock ‘n’ Roll stories are endless. This is what has excited me about the Los Angeles music scene. There’s still a rock ‘n’ roll mystique about L.A. Ask any kid if he’d rather get a job or go to Los Angeles and take a chance at being a rock star. Everybody knows the answer! Q. Why such imagery? Rock ‘n’ Roll tattoos are iconic. They for me combine the flamboyant and rebellious look of rock ‘n’ roll and the intensity of the power-chord based heavy metal music style that arose in the late 1970s and early 1980s into the beginning of the 1990s on the Los Angeles Sunset Strip music scene. These L.A rockers became infamous for their debauched lifestyles of late night parties, which were widely covered in the tabloid press. That lifestyle has always intrigued and fascinated me. It hasn’t really changed today and there seems to be a rock ‘n’ roll revival on The Strip. Rock ‘n’ Roll tattoos are the markings of the Rock Star, the strutting peacock who doesn’t ask for attention but commands it. In the past year, I’ve been travelling to Los Angles back and forth. It’s become my second home. I spend a lot of my time on The Strip drawing, photographing, writing and talking to people. The Sunset Strip is the name given to a 2.5km stretch of Sunset Boulevard. I’ve walked up and down it maybe a 100 times. The Strip embraces a premier collection of boutiques, restaurants, rock clubs, and nightclubs that are on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry. It is also known for its trademark array of huge, colourful billboards. The Strip has also developed notoriety as a hangout for rock stars, movie stars and other entertainers. Many musicians live or stay on The Strip for the easy access to the live music venues. This is the way it’s always been.

Nullarbor Dreaming Guy Warren charts the track from West to East.
A winner of the Archibald Prize, Guy Warren is renowned as one of Australia’s leading experimental artists whose unique style of imagery and technique has captivated and inspired a wave of new artists. In a career spanning six decades, Warren founded the now- famous “Tin Sheds” workshop in Sydney, was invited by the great Lloyd Rees to teach at Sydney University, was awarded the Archibald Prize, two honorary doctorates and a Medal of Australia, painted the portraits on the $2, $10 and $20 note and was one of the first major artists to emblazon his designs across the Sydney skyline. His current work provides an amazing insight into a major talent in his 90th year who is creating his most complex and fascinating work to date. His second Perth exhibition focuses on the expansive landscape of the Nullarbor and opens on 11th August at Linton & Kay Gallery in Subiaco in association with Buratti Fine Art.
