Making Burbank More Sustainable with Parks & Recreation

Community Gardens

Community Gardens create a space where people from every background can come together to share their love of gardening. Community Gardens transcend social barriers and are vibrant, cooperative spaces that build self-reliance, reduce poverty, mitigate global warming, provide safe recreational green spaces, and proven to reduce neighborhood crime.

Located on the Chandler bike path at 1141 N. Pass Ave., the first Burbank Community Garden thrives with a variety of carefully grown flowers, plants, and vegetables. Through a partnership between the City of Burbank and The Los Angeles Community Garden Council, this garden was opened for plot reservations in May 2022 and continues to grow with the help of dedicated volunteers. A new garden is currently being designed to open in the near future.

The Chandler/Pass garden is a community building space that welcomes volunteers of all gardening skill levels. If you would like to apply to volunteer at the community garden, please visit burbankcommunitygarden.org to obtain the application and to review the garden agreements.

If you don’t have a particularly green thumb, but would like to contribute to the success of this wonderful initiative, the gardens accept donations that help keep the toolshed stocked and help volunteers plan engaging events. All donations to the community gardens are 100% tax deductible!

DIG Burbank

DIG Burbank is a volunteer program that helps keep our parks beautiful. As a volunteer, you can help pull weeds, add mulch to the soil, and clean up debris in our Burbank parks. DIG is a great opportunity to give back to the community for volunteers of all ages (although most volunteers are ages 7+ and there are a few additional requirements for minors). Come join us if you’re comfortable with working outside, willing to get dirty, and able to perform physical work. You can find more information on our DIG Burbank program, including how to sign up, at www.BurbankCA.gov/DigBurbank

Plant for a Greener Burbank

The City of Burbank has had a long standing commitment to supporting the tree canopy that brings so many quality of life benefits to our community, including:

Cleaning the air and providing oxygen | Saving energy and reducing energy costs | Beautifying our surroundings | Reducing stormwater runoff | Providing a habitat for wildlife and native species | Reducing noise pollution | Keeping soils and pavement cool | Lowering daytime temperatures | Lowering stress levels | Providing other overall health benefits

If you would like to help us continue our efforts to Plant for a Greener Burbank, please contact us at 818.238.5300 or email at ParksandRec@BurbankCA.gov.

Monarch Mile

The Monarch Mile is another great organization that works to bring the community together through planting and upkeeping native plants along the Chandler Bike Path. The efforts of this organization are focused on installation of plants that are designed for the benefit of the at-risk Monarch Butterflies and other essential pollinators. Mulch Program

Do you have plans to replace your lawn with drought resistant landscape? We can help with our Free Mulch Program. You can use mulch to improve the quality of your soil by breaking up clay and allowing better water and air movement to help your home garden grow. Not only does it help keep your plants insulated and healthy, but it also helps manage unwanted weeds.

The City of Burbank Parks and Recreation Department, Forestry Division has three locations you can pick up mulch when it’s available:

George Izay Park – 1111 W. Olive Ave.

(In the Parking Lot by Ball Field #4, near the Griffith Park Dr. and Clark Avenue corner)

McCambridge Park – 1515 N. Glenoaks Blvd.

(In the Parking Lot by Ball Field #1)

Robert Gross Park – 2800 W. Empire Ave.

(at the back of the Parking Lot by the fence)

No reservations needed, just bring containers to put the mulch into and take as much as you need.
