Complexities of the Rural: Institute of Kaş Kaş The project area is located in the town of Kaş, Antalya, in Turkey. The summers are hot and arid, winters are warm and rainy climatic regions. Agriculture, greenhouse, tourism are the main economic resources. There is also the Lycian Way which was the lands of Lycian civilization in the Kaş. Archaeological tourism in this region which has many archaeological remains have increased in recent years. Despite the increasing population because of tourism in the summer months, especially in the winter months, people immigrates to different cities because of inadequacy education services. This situation causes discontinuity in the population in Kaş. This project is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the Kaş, reducing the immigration of qualified human profiles, and reducing discontinuous population during summer and winter with potential of Kaş.

The first stage of the project is developing a strategic development plan and architectural design which serves this strategic plan. Swot analysis and incentives of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock for the Kaş and swot analysis of development plans of Kaş Municipality were examined. A result of both examinations showed Kaş doesn’t have advanced education and job opportunities to qualified population to stay in Kaş and there is a lack of coordination in the economic activities. In this case, the innovative institute, which high participation of local people, researchers, educators, practitioners will take place, is founded, with current potential of education, job opportunities in the tourism, agriculture, greenhouse and archaeological areas, relevant departments of Akdeniz University and 4th generation university model, for sustainability of Kaş.

Axle Diagram of Kaş The area, which he institution will be founded is located at the main axle which connects Kaş with another cities and provinces, is filled up and serving as a bus station terminal Kaş now. The western part is used as a market place once a week. It is located within walking distance to the beach and the newly built yacht harbour. The northern region is used as a district cemetery while the southern region is a protected area. The area which used as market place and the terminal are separated by 4 existing structures whose have a demolition decision. These existing structures have been reused which intended to physically separate but functionally interweave two parts that have different levels of the area. The western part of the land is covered the buildings, which are serving that institution, because of filled up east part has strong relationship with public axle, it is aimed to serve as a public area and market place within the designed structure covered by project.

There is also a tomb remains in this land. This remain was preserved as many archaeological remains that have preservation and investigation studies in the institute lab. These remains were used in the open-air museum which was created from institute and opened to the public. Units such as collective classrooms, conference center, examination laboratories, practice classrooms, exhibitions, recreational areas and restaurants intend to educate the collectivities by coming together different ethnic groups such as, tourists, students and researchers and local peoples.

Considering the existing green texture and the building skeletons in the project area, the pedestrian flow from the main axles to the project area was provided. At this point, existing building skeletons have become a permeable interface between the open space/square and institute buildings.

The unfinished construction that exist in the site separates the project area into two main regions. This allows regionalization between the public area and the structures belonging to the institute within the site.

At the same time, these four structures function as interfaces with their reuse, allowing the two main zones to flow and infiltrate into one another. The structures at the two ends were also re-used to provide direct access to the institute.

4 different characters of the square have been formed with topographical interventions made in the site. The initial square has a character serving the town of Kaş. The second is the open-air museum for archaeology, the third for the relationship between the institute and the parking lot, and the last one is create with the difference of elevation for the amphitheater and outdoor activities for the institute.

TOPOGWAFFIE Topogwaffie -urban furniture- which designed in the context of the basic design course, have a characteristic that allows people to sit comfortably because of their stylized forms of human posture. Topogwaffie, created with the details of the construction and the details of the connection, is a form that will not prevent the growth of the tree in the existing locality. It is also a project with important features in terms of being able to be accommodated in every direction and fully meeting the angles of human postures. The structure is still in Istanbul Bilgi University- santralistanbul campus.

When the blind people want to drink tea they are obliged to use their fingers to focalize and pour the tea. However, it is not good for sanitation and of burning.

The blind people needs a way to pour and drink tea easily, so hook take & drink helps to do this. Actually, portability, compatibility and suppleness for all type of cups is so important features of it. It is compatible for all types of tea cup and mugs becuse of its material.

It’s fit whole types of tea kettle thanks to silicon material.

There are many kinds of living things in the square - inside and around - except human beings. Dogs and birds are at the beginning of what we observe. But birds are much more numerous than others. There is something that this brings; they are dominating the square. In square, it is almost impossible for someone coming to the spot to return without having a relationship with the birds, especially pigeons. We realized there was a cycle of them. The pier, bait, water and tree were the three main stop points for pigeons. We could only observe the pigeons in these points because in certain cases they were in contact with other birds and sometimes only in their own area.

KANLICA MANIFESTO 1 Birds are the pre-dominant inhabitants of the Kanlica Square. They are crowded in number and quite active in terms of circulation and places they occupy. Thus, all design must be oriented around the betterment of the pigeons’ habitat. Such approach should also be concerned with the mutual betterment of all species’ habitats as well, because all habitats are interrelated and highly affected by each other. 2 Square is located next to Bosphorus. Yet, the square has very weak visual and spatial connection to it. So, the final design should aim to reveal -and also take advantage of -the true potential of the Kanlica Square. 3 Birds and people, the two pre-dominant groups of species that occupy the square, do in fact move and circulate quite frequently within the duration of their occupation. The overall final design must take this into account, and so, respond to such movement and change over time. Responsive design in this case is the key to co-existing habitats.

As an example of construction, Wintergatan’s Marble Machine, Theo Jansen’s strandbeest and Sky spotting stop which is So Architecture’s installation were studied.

The stuctures and the floor is designed to float on the sea. The structures are rotating and are in continuous motion due to a mechanism that converts the effect of the waves into motion energy. This contributes to the movement cycle of birds and humans. The form of the structure is designed in such a way that birds’ faeces can easily flow and birds can be perched.
