Area property values surpass rest of county by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Property values in the Heights, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest are up 10-12 percent, compared with 4.5 percent for Harris County, according to Harris County Appraisal District assistant chief appraiser Guy Griscom, conducting Tuesday’s annual HCAD Property Tax Summit, designed for those who base their budgets largely on property taxes to take a peek at where they stand. That news means a larger base for taxing entities such as the city of Houston, Houston ISD, Houston Community College and Harris County - but final figures won’t be known until after protests are factored in, sometime in summer. Meantime, most government agencies are left to devise budgets – and calculate potential tax increases – with their best-guess estimates. During the summit, Griscom delivered a thorough presentation that proved to be good news

for single family homeowners, since multi-unit housing, commercial and office properties are rising in value, too, creating a more balanced tax base. He pointed to the growth of the energy sector and its job growth. The addition of the onemillion acre Exxon Mobil world headquarters in Spring, in Harris County – just south of the Montgomery County line – will benefit county residents. In addition, Griscom cited a report that there are 17 planned office projects at six million square feet in the Energy Corridor, which he said should more than offset the business lost to Chicago when Continental Airlines merged with United and moved its headquarters out of Houston. Multifamily homes and apartments have experienced an increase in business, and foreclosure volume is down 24 percent between December 2011 and December 2012. Also, rent

concessions are down. New home development is up 27 percent since 2011, which is the highest year-end total since before the recession. Homes are being built and selling more, and there is an increased number of subdivisions and condos being built, Griscom said. Of homes that are valued at $1 million, 72.4 percent of them have increased in value. For homes valued between $500,000 and $999,999, 69.2 percent have increased in value. It’s 64.6 percent for homes valued between $250,000 and $499,999. Businesses and residents often challenge and win legal challenges of their tax appraisal, but HCAD chief appraiser Jim Robinson said the district is better equipped to handle those challenges. Still, he said he believes that the existing state law allowing those challenges should be adjusted.

OPINIONS

Each month, we ask a panel of Realtors and business people in the area for an opinion on a specific topic. Here was the question this month, and their answers below. Property tax assessments have recently been released, and this is the season to challenge appraisals. Is there a downside to challenging the appraisal and lowering it if you plan to market and sell your home in the next few years? What should your strategy be?

Patsy Bushart Houston City Living

I do not believe that challenging a property tax assessment has a downside. A tax appraisal is not a valid figure for the value of a home. The property tax appraisal is used to tax your property and does not follow market value. Market value is what a buyer is willing to pay and a seller is willing to accept. It is the price you could expect to get in the current market. When you are planning to sell your home, the strategy should be to contact a Realtor to provide you with a comparative market analysis, which will indicate what similar homes in your area have been selling for in the recent market. You could also have your house appraised by a qualified Appraiser. Keep in mind that a buyer who is financing their purchase will also have an appraisal done on behalf of the lender.

Barbara Raines Keller Williams Realty

As a home owner and a Realtor, I always take the challenge to fight my property taxes. The taxing authority can raise a homestead tax up to 10 percent of last year’s evaluation, if they wish for no exact reason. To challenge the appraisal is often a task, but one that each owner has the right to do. In the past, after reviewing appraisal, often there are mistakes that cost the home owner more taxes that could have been avoided, if the owner had just reviewed the document. One has the choice of going to the appraisal district on his own or hiring an agent to represent him and his property before a hearing with the appraisal board. Who wants to pay more taxes than needed? When selling a home, the taxes are passed to the new owner at a pro-rated rate minus any exemption that the new owner does not qualify for, for that selling year. The new owner will apply for a homestead exemption that would begin the next January. The appraisal of a home is based upon the sales of homes in that area for the past six months. These are two different things. I would encourage each and every homeowner to review their appraisal carefully to make sure all the facts that are given are true and then make a decision to go before the appraisal board.

Terry Tompkins Keller-Williams Realty

Taxable value of a home and market value are two entirely different numbers. The taxable value of your home is the value the city/county has given the home to generate income for the county/city/school/MUD district etc. When those entities increase their budget, the rates typically go up, which caused the tax increase on your annual tax bill. In addition, when the appraisal district reassesses the value of your home each year, the appraised value can be increased. As a homeowner you need to make sure you take advantage of any exemptions you are entitled to have on the property. Most common is the “Residential Homestead,” if this is your primary residence. The next most common is “Over 65” exemption, if you’re the primary owner of the residence and over the age of 65. Your accountant should be able to assist with any specific details of qualifications for tax purposes. The market value of your home is the price of homes sold, of similar type in your neighborhood. This means there is a “market” for your home at a specific price. Currently that price in most of Houston is increasing at a record pace.

Trends: Inventory at lowest level since 1999 March was another strong month both for sales and increasing value for single family homes in Leader neighborhoods, according to figures provided by the Houston Association of Realtors. Sales continued to soar in the 77009 ZIP code, up 43.6 percent over March 2012, with 89 homes changing hands at an average sales price increase of 11 percent. The 77007 ZIP posted a 34 percent gain in sales, up to 182 from 136 last March, and an average price of $457,000, a hike of nearly 17 percent in one year. While the Heights’ 77008 ZIP showed a 6.4 percent gain, with 166 homes sold, average price was up about 14 percent, at $393,000. Some 114 homes sold in the 77018 ZIP, a 4.6 percent increase, but the average price rose by one-fifth, to $345,000. Prices in the 77091 ZIP continued to rise, with 21 homes selling for an average price of $118,000 – a 45 percent hike over March 2012. The only ZIP posting a decline in sales was 77092, down 12 percent with 37 home sales, but value there increased by more than 10 percent, to $148,000. In the Greater Houston housing market, HAR reported activity never slowed during the traditionally quieter winter months. The addition of nearly 119,000 jobs over the past 12 months and the resulting need for housing, combined with continued low interest rates, helped make March Houston’s 22nd consecutive month of positive home sales. According to its latest monthly data, home sales jumped 17.0 percent compared to last March. Housing inventory, which had been at a 13-year low of 3.6 months during the first two months of the year, shrank slightly in March to 3.5 months. The lower supply of homes and added demand sent prices higher. The median price of a single-family home—the figure at which half the homes sold for more and half for less—rose 6.5 percent to $172,000, an all-time record high for Houston. The average price rose 4.6 percent year-over-year to $236,195, the second highest level ever. Contracts closed on 5,779 single-family homes. That is the largest one-month sales volume since August 2012. All housing segments experienced gains except for those priced under $80,000. Homes selling between $80,000 and $250,000 registered the greatest sales volume increase. “REALTORS® continue to see multiple offers on single-family homes and condos throughout the Houston market, which suggests that our local economy is growing stronger by the day,” said HAR Chairman Danny Frank with Prudential Anderson Properties. “Governor Rick Perry recently stated that Texas

Single-family homes aren’t the only properties selling at a swift pace. Year over year, townhomes and condominiums increased from 374 sold last March to 550 units sold in March 2013. is the fastest growing state in the country, and most of those people seem to be coming to the Greater Houston area because our job market is better than that of Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.” In reporting the addition of 118,700 net jobs during the past year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranked Houston No. 1 for job growth among the 20 most populous U.S. cities. The 4.5 percent hiring increase returns Houston to its previous job peak of the fall of 2011. Foreclosure property sales reported in the HAR Multiple Listing Service (MLS) declined 27.2 percent compared to March 2012. Foreclosures currently make up 12.3 percent of all property sales, down from 15.8 percent one month earlier. The median price of foreclosures climbed 5.8 percent to $86,000. March sales of all property types in Houston totaled 7,006, a 19.4 percent increase over the same month last year and the largest one-month volume since last August. Total dollar volume for properties sold leapt 23.6 percent to $1.6 billion versus $1.3 billion a year earlier.

March Monthly Market Comparison

March brought positive results to Houston’s overall real estate market when all sales categories are compared to March 2012. On a yearover-year basis, total property sales, total dollar volume and average and median pricing all rose. Month-end pending sales totaled 4,433. That is up 6.5 percent from last year and portends the likelihood of another month of positive sales when the April figures are tallied. Active listings, or the number of available properties, at the end of March declined 22.1 percent from March 2012 to 32,704. Housing inventory in Houston held at 3.6 months in January and February, but slipped slightly in March to 3.5 months. That remains the lowest level recorded since 1999. Inventory first fell below a five-month supply in August 2012 and then dropped below a four-month supply last December. The inventory of singlefamily homes across the United States stands at 4.7 months, according to the latest report from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

The average price edged up 2.8 percent to $173,155 while the median price increased 3.0 percent to $139,000. Months inventory was 3.7 months compared to the 6.8 months level it held in March 2012.

Lease Property Update

Houston’s lease property market saw generally positive results in March. Rentals of singlefamily homes increased 7.8 percent compared to March 2012 and year-over-year townhouse/ condominium rentals were flat. The average rent for single-family lease homes was $1,552 while it was $1,393 for townhouses/condominiums – representing increases of 4.3 percent and 5.0 percent respectively.

As a matter of principle, homeowners should challenge the process perpetrated by the State Legislators, and implemented by the Harris County Appraisal District. As a practical matter, homeowners must do their homework prior to mounting a challenge to HCAD. If one has just purchased a home to live in, the selling price becomes the value used by HCAD. Home is where the heart is. Not to mention all your stuff.

Owner learns steps not to skip in Do-Over by Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader A case of “French door envy” led a Shepherd Forest homeowner to improve the aesthetics and ease of access into her back yard’s patio, pergola and pond areas. Swapping out a set of standardissue windows for more dramatic doors – a relatively simple redo – quickly expanded into a far more involved remodeling project that also opened up – and updated – the nearby kitchen and dining area. Homeowner Jennifer W. is no stranger to building sites; she works for a commercial and industrial construction A monthly look at a company. And renovation project in she’d had to our neighborhoods. substantially repair parts of the 936-sq.-ft. home “compliments of Hurricane Ike,” which toppled a tree into the master bedroom, wrecked the roof and caused water damage. Ready for a simple project, she regrouped, deciding “if I were going to go through the renovation process again, I might as well get everything I wanted.” Ideas had been perking in her head ever since moving a decade ago into the ‘50s-vintage neighborhood of a thousand homes known for its residents’ civic pride and core of active, original homeowners.

DOVER

Avoid the unmentionable

Before contractor Altura Construction transformed the back

of the house, passage to the yard and outdoor amenities had been through “my gross, dingy laundry room.” Since the 1955 ranch-style home’s floor plan is common in the neighborhood, she had noted (admittedly with envy) how other homeowners had upgraded to French doors off the dining area, “and they were gorgeous.” Initially, the plan was to make things so “my guests would no longer have to traipse through my laundry room – avoiding the occasional unmentionables left hanging to dry.” Ultimately, the scope also refaced the kitchen cabinets, installed new drawers, added granite countertops and a breakfast bar – and opened up the kitchen-dining area to the living room. Plus, there’s a nifty set of French doors off the dining area and a crisply refurbished laundry room. Jennifer W. has no regrets and enjoys the results, especially the kitchen’s expanded counter space. That the late-2012 Do-Over finished just in time for her annual charity supporting Christmas party was a bonus. (And a relief.)

Living with mayhem, mess

The three-week construction phase went smoothly, but was not without “moments” and work-site epiphanies, especially since she remained in the home. Not having a kitchen was “grueling,” she recalled. Ever-so-briefly she relied on a makeshift kitchen with a hot plate and microwave in the master bedroom. “Not a good idea.” Cooking in the same room as her slumber and clothes “was

wrong on so many levels.” (The local coffee shop subsequently saw a lot of her.) Meanwhile, dust proved to be surprisingly persistent and pervasive throughout the project, despite plastic sheeting taped across the construction zone. One post-project suggestion: Change out the home’s air filters weekly during a remodeling project (and maybe store more stuff off-site).

Wake up, get the coffee

In retrospect, the homeowner thinks she probably ought to have moved out during construction and supervised via drive-bys and daily contractor meetings. “It can be a little disconcerting when you want to lounge around Saturday morning and there are numerous workers coming in and out of your house. I didn’t know if I should go about my normal routine or stop and offer them coffee and donuts. (I went the coffee/donut route.) Oh, and forget about sleeping in past 7 a.m. These guys mean business and will be waiting on your front door step as soon as the sun rises to start work,” she said in an emailed account of the project. Being on site, however, meant catching any glitch and resolving it ASAP, she said later. Not so on the home’s previous repairs, though, Ad # 37410

when “unscrupulous contractors, shoddy workmanship, everything that went wrong did, and I’m certain that had I been there I could have prevented at least half of the mistakes.”

Tips for a smooth project:

• Ask for references “and actually call them. Google them, look them up on Angie’s List, do whatever you can and be diligent. If you find a bad review, ask about it.” • Get it in writing. “Detailed contracts are a homeowner’s best friend.” • Pull permits. “It may seem like a bureaucratic headache -- and you may come across someone who advises you not to -- but if you are dealing with plumbing, electrical and demo, you need to make sure it happens to protect yourself. Without permits, contractors can take a lot of shortcuts that only hurt you – the homeowner – in the end. Plus, if you get red-tagged, be prepared to shut down your project indefinitely.” • Hold retainage. “Never pay for a remodel up front. “ Work out a schedule of payments based on percentage of completion. Hold back a 10 percent retainage. Release it only after the punch list items and the final walk-through are complete. “You will have punch list items, trust me.“ • Hire a good contractor. Hers was a “rock star.”

Houston painter creates curb appeal by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Every homeowner has a different story – they may be a proud alum of a school, a dedicated fan of a professional sports team or passionate about dogs, cats – or even iguanas. Houston resident Harry Millirons is a businessman who has made a living painting curbs in front of people’s homes. While some curbs simply have the number painted in black and white, others have everything from sports logos to the Texas flag to things that indicate hobbies; or even memorials, such as a butterfly that Millirons painted in Oak Forest for a woman who lost her son to cancer and wanted to commemorate him. Millirons – widely known as Harry The Curb Painter – travels around Houston via Metro bus with a backpack that includes all of his painting supplies.

Harry “The Curb Painter” Millirons touches up the paint on an Oak Forest curb that he painted earlier this year. (Photo by Michael Sudhalter) The 46-year-old Virginia native obtained a city permit to paint curbs and has done so for the past 20 years. He enjoys “meeting all of the interesting folks” he encounters through his work. “Oak Forest

is one of the nicest areas,” he said. “I like working there.” Millirons finds clients through word-of-mouth and by going door-to-door. But the most effective form of

building new business, he says, comes from working with homeowners associations. He also is astute in the use of social media, such as Facebook, announcing when he plans to be in a certain neighborhood. Sometimes, homeowners will request that Millirons paint a graphic on their driveway, or inside their home. He prefers this niche form of house painting to working in the car rental business, which Millirons did when he graduated from Sam Houston State in the late 1980s. “Every day is an adventure,” Millirons said. “You get to meet different people and hear their stories.” Beyond the aesthetic reasons for painting a curb, it also serves a public safety purpose. “A lot of police officers and firemen have told me it makes it easier to find the address at night,” Millirons said.

Area schools get kudos in Children at Risk school rankings Three Leader-area schools received shout-outs in the annual Children at Risk ranking of public and charter schools in Greater Houston released this week, but overall, Houston ISD’s performance was mixed – boasting the most A-graded schools at 44, and also the most failing schools with 22. And close examination of the Children at Risk placement of Leader neighborhood campuses showed overall slippage in the rankings of many. Reagan High School was named the region’s best urban comprehensive high school, while Waltrip High – which HISD

announced last week is being proposed for the Apollo 20 turnaround program for low performing schools – finished fourth. Oak Forest Elementary School cracked the top 10 in its category, surpassing traditional high achieving West University and Barbara Bush elementaries to be ranked at No. 6. Garden Oaks Elementary skyrocketed up the rankings, as well. While Reagan and Waltrip climbed slightly in the ranking of 150 regional high schools and 1,171 in the state - Reagan from 75th to 66th locally and 740 to 622 statewide – Scarborough High dropped from 119th to 125th in the region and

from 1,058 to 1,066 in Texas. Hogg was the only Leader-area middle school to move up in the rankings - going from 219th to 209th place out of nearly 300 local campuses, and moving up from 1,380 to 1,340 out of 1,840 statewide campuses this year. Hamilton, Clifton and Frank Black all slipped. Hamilton went from 44th to 52nd place, Clifton a whopping 71st to 197th and Black from 228th last year to 280th this year out of 283 regional middle schools, with similar drops in state rankings. All Leader-area elementary schools, except for Stevens, were bright spots in

Science on the Streets

the Children at Risk evaluations, moving up through the ranks. In addition to Oak Forest, which moved into the 6th spot from 18th place last year, Garden Oaks rose more than 600 spots from 721st in 2012 to 107th this year. Other movements were Harvard from 108th to 83rd, Love from 636th to 382nd, Durham from 649th to 584th and Helms from 256th to 172nd. Stevens fell from 121st place last year to 428th this year. There were 775 elementary schools ranked in the Houston region. Children at Risk’s formula for high schools takes into consideration perfor-

mance on reading and math exams as well as graduation rates and college readiness, as evidenced by scores on Advanced Placement end-of-course tests and SAT and ACT college entrance exams. Socioeconomic factors are considered at all levels with consideration given to schools with high poverty-level populations, and at the elementary and middle school levels, percentages of students being held back at the end of the year are considered. Stevens festival focuses on saving earth by Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com The chilly afternoon did not diminish the enthusiasm of the Stevens Elementary School community who came out to support the annual Stevens Science Street Festival and GT Expo April 18. Science teacher and lead organizer Deirdre Ricketts said that this was the third year for the event. “The idea to turn family science night into a science festival was born from attending the Sally Ride Science Festival at Rice University,” she said. “We really strive to strengthen the home-school connection while showing how fun science is.” This year’s theme was “Mission: Save Planet Earth and Beyond,” with a range of earth-space science objectives, including making moon craters and plants in space. Staying true to the environmental nature of the festival, many of the paper handouts were replaced with QR, or quick reader, codes which allowed parents and students to utilize their smart phones and take activities home. Another highlight this year was the GT Expo, called “A Galaxy of Gifted Goods.” Students in the gifted and talented program at Stevens were proud to present some of the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) work they’ve been doing as part of the Science Lab, Robotics Teams, Stevens Engineers and Rainbow Math programs. Even the youngest students were able to get in the game as evidenced by pre-K teacher Cory Bates’ video which showed students learning what items would sink and which would float.

(Photo by Betsy Denson) The children enjoyed the crater climb, which was set up on their playground, as well as the Discovery Dome in the cafeteria. The Discovery Dome, a mobile planetarium, was on loan from the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Both Ricketts and Principal Lucy Anderson were very appreciative of the volunteer work of the teachers, staff, and PTO who made the event such a success.

SPX joins CenterPoint, leads in energy efficiency, awareness St. Pius X High School claimed this week that it’s become the first and only private school in Houston to participate in CenterPoint Energy’s Sustainable Schools Program, which promotes energy efficiency awareness school-wide. The SSP is an interactive energy conservation program offered at no cost to schools by CenterPoint Energy to provide a positive impact on the environment. The goal is to raise awareness of energy usage and change behavior in both students and staff in order to promote energy savings. The program highlights the commitment to sustainability and addresses issues of social justice and care of the earth that are at the core of the Domincan sisters who lead the school. The services and materials that are part of the SSP include educational materials and activities, teacher training and guidance, additional resources for lessons and activities, school energy audit kit for student audits, and training and on-going support for school staff. The program gives SPX stu-

dents a hands-on, eye-opening and user-friendly experience in a growing field of engineering as well as an engaging cooperative experience.

Implementation of the program begins immediately and continues into the 2013-2014 school year. Based on a news release from St. Pius X High School

Reaching new heights St. Pius X sophomore third baseman Jeremy Jones is making an impact for the Panthers this season. (Photo by KJWESPHOTOS.COM)

Lady ’Dogs sweep Waltrip, win 4A-21 title Celebrated softball pitchers don’t come around very often, but Reagan High has been fortunate to have two of them. Julian Kujawa g r a duate d from Reagan in 1943, and fastpitch softball took him all over the world. MICHAEL Now 88 S UDHALTER years old, the Timbergrove resident is proud of his accomplishments. Fast-forward 70 years, and the RHS softball team has a pitcher – senior Victoria Herrera – who would make

Kujawa stand up and applaud. Herrera, an Austin College signee, struck out 10 batters in a 4-1 win over Waltrip on April 19, marking the first time that the Lady Bulldogs have swept the Lady Rams in a season. “It’s great to beat Waltrip,” RHS head softball coach Daniel Perez said. “Waltrip has been a dynasty for a long time.” When Reagan defeated Waltrip 13-5 on March 19, it marked the first time they’d done so in 16 years. So, last week’s celebration was a little more subdued. Kind of an “act like you’ve been there” type of thing. But the Reagan team was extremely excited when it was presented with the Class 4A-District 21 trophy, which represents its first district title in eight years.

The alarm clock rings at 5:15 a.m., and Jeremy Jones begins his crosstown journey to St. Pius X. Most of his friends are still getting a few more ZZZs in or watching re-runs of the previous night’s SportsCenter. The Panthers sophomore third baseman lives in Pearland, but it didn’t deter him from playing the sport he loved at the North Shepherd school. “When I was in eighth grade, I’d heard that Kohl Stewart threw 98 miles per hour as a sophomore,” Jones said. “Baseball is my thing. I wanted to join the club.” Jones, 15, had originally planned to attend Episcopal High in Bellaire, but he changed his path to Pius, debuting on the junior varsity as a shortstop last season. He made the jump to varsity

this season, moving to third base. “I was driven,” Jones said. “to make varsity this year. You have to keep a lot of confidence and get all of the negative stuff out of your mind.” And he’s the youngest player on the team and its only sophomore. Jones delivered the game-winning hit in the defending state champions’ season-opening victory at Second Baptist. “He’s been able to come up big in some situations,” SPX head

Reagan Alumni Golf Tournament raises more than $60,000 on Monday

Sheriff Garcia honors the late Harold Wiesenthal by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com The Reagan High Alumni Golf Tournament raised more than $60,000 – doubling their previous best effort in the 23-year-old tournament – on Monday at Jersey Meadow Golf Course in Jersey Village. “The difference was the almost 70 volunteers who did a fantastic job. Almost all of them were Reagan graduates” said. Tournament President Stephen Marmion, a 1959 RHS graduate. “We’ll come back next year and do this, and most of the volunteers will be back. We’ll beat this ($60,000 number) if we can.” Marmion said $10,000 was raised on Monday alone

The rest of the money will go to covering tournament expenses and seed money for next year’s tournament. The winners will be announced during Reagan’s graduation next month. For the second straight time, Reagan overcame a deficit to defeat its rivals from Waltrip. Herrera has been the Lady Bulldogs’ dominant player, but it was senior right fielder Marlenne Martinez, who proved to be the difference offensively. Martinez finished with three RBI in the pivotal victory. Last season, Martinez didn’t play on the

team but not because she didn’t want to be on the field. “I didn’t have a ride to practice or games,” Martinez said. “This year I got a car, and I’m here.” She was previously the second baseman as a freshman and sophomore, but adapted to the outfield upon return to the program. Martinez is considering walking on to the softball team at Angelo State in San Angelo. She enjoyed the memorable season, playing alongside the dynamic Herrera. “I’ll always remember her,” Martinez said. “When she becomes famous, I’ll say I played

with her.” The Reagan-Waltrip softball game, which was followed by the Waltrip baseball team’s 6-3 victory over Reagan, showcased the competitiveness of the rivalry and the importance of team and community spirit. On the morning of April 19, there was some graffiti, of which contents included deplorable language, on the Waltrip campus. It’s important for the students and community to remember that this will not be tolerated. Competition is a beautiful thing, and rivalries can be lots of fun. But let’s keep it in perspective and have a good time.

Michael Wiesenthal had been around his father’s store his entire life. He knew that Reagan students made up a strong portion of the business. “It’s a real honor to be here,” Michael said. “I know my dad would have been really proud. If it wasn’t for these Reagan people, the store would have never survived the ’50s.” Former Houston ISD athletic director Joe Tusa, a 1945 Reagan alum and a former coach at the school, attended the event. “I think it’s great because of the purpose,” Tusa said. “It’s a scholarship for kids, many of whom would not be able to go to college.” Marmion Dambrino, the current HISD athletic director, was there, too. “It was awesome,” Dambrino said. “I try to participate in the tournament as many times as I’m able to. The Reagan Alumni are absolutely

incredible in supporting the student body at Reagan High School. This is what it’s all about, supporting kids.” Former Houston Astros shortstop Craig Reynolds, a 1971 RHS graduate who’s now a pastor at Second Baptist Church, delivered the prayer before the meal. Roland Chavez, a 1975 RHS graduate and Houston City Council candidate, also attend event. Marmion said next year, the tournament plans on creating a scholarship for a Reagan ROTC student in honor of Ray Knight, a 1940 Reagan alum who was serving in the Army Air Corps in 1945 when his plane crashed in the mountains of Italy. Knight was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and is believed to be the only RHS alum to have earned that honor.

On Monday, the Tournament honored Wiesenthal, who passed away last year. Wiesenthal’s son, Michael, and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, who considered Wiesenthal a mentor, spoke to the audience of 115 golfers about the legacy of the longtime Houston businessman. “It was an honor to be able to to be a witness to a legacy,” Garcia said. Garcia said Wiesenthal shaped the Heights community and is “why the Heights is one of the premier places to live, work, start a business or spend some time.” When Garcia decided to run for Harris County Sheriff in the 2008 election, he said Wiesenthal was very supportive of his efforts.

coach Adam Massiatte said. “Right now, it’s a learning year for him.” Jones said the adjustment has been a good one this season. “Third base is more about reactions,” Jones said. “My reactions are quick, so that’s a perfect spot for me.” He said seeing fastballs and curveballs is much more challenging at the varsity level. Jones hit his first-ever varsity home run in a 5-2 loss to St. Thomas on April 9. “It’s the best feeling ever, especially against (St. Thomas),” Jones said. “I just thought ‘see ball, hit ball.’ I canceled everything out in the stands and everything out in my mind.” Jones played wide receiver for the Panthers’ varsity football team last fall, but he’s considering focusing solely on baseball Jones’ favorite player is the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes.
