This week’s edition of Business Leaders takes a look at how road construction is affecting local businesses, the closing of a 19th Street institution and who’s opening up shop in the area. Pinemont construction causing more than just headaches for businesses By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com When construction began on the Rebuild Houston project to widen Pinemont Drive from Ella Boulevard to Shepherd Drive from two lanes to four lanes, Naro Mak, who manages the Hartz Chicken Buffet in the Pinemont Shopping Center at 1215 Pinemont Drive, said it was manageable. “In February it wasn’t so bad,” he said. However, a month back, he lost another one of his entrances. A week ago construction cut off another. Now there’s a handmade sign, courtesy of Mak’s wife, at the closest remaining entrance which to most passerby looks like a service entrance for construction vehicles. The other access is though the parking lot of the nearby Houston Community College. Needless to say, Hartz’s drive through business has tanked.

“We’re down 40 to 50 percent and we had to let two workers go, but our main staff is holding on,” said Mak, whose family owns about a dozen Hartz restaurants around Houston. “Now it’s mostly regulars. People who used to come in once a week or once every two weeks are stepping it up. Some are coming twice a week. That’s really helped.” Mak said it’s a toss-up whether to classify his restaurant as fast food or dine in because food is not made until ordered. He said that the restaurant offers both baked and fried chicken and also has the hard to find livers and gizzards. “I didn’t realize those would be so popular,” said Mak. “There’s a nostalgia to it.” The $8.99 buffet, drink included, is what wins customers over, according to Mak. “We have 24 sides, with 15 rotated daily,” he said. “It’s quite a value.”

Recently Mak posted a message on the Oak Forest Homeowners Association Facebook page about the restaurant’s predicament and was gratified by the response. “The next day it was like a whirlwind,” he said. “I need to get back on there and thank people.” Pario Novo’s Andre Reed who leased the new Pinemont Pavilion said the merchants there haven’t been affected too much yet. “They’ve left two driveways open,” he said. “Traffic is down a bit but the city has done as good as job as they can considering.” Marchese’s Kitchen’s Susan Henn said that customers are still finding her, coming from nearby Candlelight Plaza and Shepherd Park Plaza. Just in case people need an extra incentive to visit though, Henn says she’ll have a snow cone machine by June. Roberto Medina, a senior staff analyst with the city’s

Public Works and Engineering Department, says that the road expansion includes placing new pavement, constructing a median and replacing open ditches on both sides with a storm sewer and curb and gutter system. He estimates the $12 million project to be complete in early 2018. “Construction is ongoing on the south side of the street, from Ella to Shepherd, and is expected to be complete by late fall,” Medina said. “Then See Pinemont P. 2B

Garden Oaks sister duo open new LA-style seafood shack

By Christina Martinez christina@theleadernews.com For sisters Melinda and Melissa Faust, a typical Friday in their youth consisted of a visit to the local seafood market with the family and buying seafood by the pound for a boil at the house. Those fond memories are what gave the sister duo the will to leave their corporate jobs and take a leap head first in opening their very own seafood spot – Mels’ Seafood Shack. The sister duo were raised in Slidell, Louisiana and grew up with a love of everything seafood. In 1998, Melinda found herself moving to Houston to tap into the oil industry, brokering oil and gas assets. All while attending to her day-to-day responsibilities, Melinda had ideas for something else. “In October of 2015, I decided to resign from my job,” Melinda Faust said. “The oil and gas industry, on my end, had been slow for a while. So it was a good time to step out and get into building out the seafood shack.” The idea for the seafood shack can probably date back a couple of decades, but Melinda recalls when she incorporated “Mels’ Seafood Shack” officially in 2005. When Melinda first moved to the neighborhood, she lived in Shady Acres and loved the property where the seafood shack sits now, formerly the Heights Plant Farm. One weekend that sister Melissa was in town, Melinda was eager to take her sister to take a look at this

property that she so desired. During that visit, the property had just gone on the market as the Heights Plant Farm was closing. After visiting the property and talking with the real estate agent that day, both sisters can agree that they saw the stars aligning and it was time to start serious consideration for Mels’ Seafood Shack. It’s all about time at Herbert’s While “time standing still” might be a popular phrase for some older stores in our area, having time stand still is the last thing Herbert and Maria Armendaiz want for their customers. Their store, Herbert’s Watch Repair, is celebrating over 45 years of fixing watches, clocks and all manner of time-telling machines in the Houston area. “Honesty is number one for us,” Herbert Armendaiz says. His success is reflected by the pull his business has with customers from all over the Houston area, with people from as far as Sugarland making the trek into the Oak Forest area for watch repair services. Although the business might be at a new location at 965 Pinemont Dr., customers have remained loyal – something that might be best reflected in the near-perfect ratings on Google and Yelp.

Whether you want your crawfish boiled to perfection or simply available by the sack, Mels’ Seafood offers the options that has the locals talking.

“I do everything by hand and we’re very old-fashioned by nature,” Herbert Armendaiz said. “We keep it very simple, as having a big heart and integrity is something that is hard to find among many watch repair stores.” Herbert Armendaiz still remembers what first sparked his interest in fixing watches and clocks. He was around 8 years old, and a friend in school had a relative who was a watch maker. Since the first time Herbert saw the craftsperson at work in 1947, he has consistently worked with fine watches. “Now I work on any kind of watches, whether they’re complicated, simple or highgrade watches and clocks,” Herbert said. “The only thing I need is time.” He and his wife said they have continued attracting their loyal customers and others who have heard of Herbert’s work. Because of the old-fashioned nature of so

many repairs, some may take more time to complete but they’re done with precision and an attention to detail that Maria Armendaiz said has kept people coming back for generations. “I wish he would retire but so many older people wonder who is going to fix their old watches,” Maria Armendaiz says with a laugh. “Besides good service, we also give love.” Herbert’s Watch Repair is located at 965 Pinemont Dr. For more information, call 713-686-4655.

Vintage store ‘Replay’ to close doors By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader An eccentric vintage store in the Heights will be closing its doors following a sudden decision by the property’s landowners. Laura Levine and Mike “Crazy Mike” Hildebrand, who own Replay, the West 19th Street store, said they are trying to look at the silver lining since learning they would be leaving about a month ago. “We were served a notice by the landlord and at first, we were upset,” Hildebrand said. “When we started to think about it, it made sense for us. We also own The Place Upstairs on Main St. above the Continental Club, and between the two stores, Laura and I work an astronomical number of hours each week. Now, we are kind of excited about closing Replay.” The pair were quick to credit the Heights community for their success. Replay, with its collection of the retro kitsch, curiosities, and clothing, along with the ArtCar parked permanently out front, brought an eccentric storefront to the Heights area. Neil Sackheim, the building’s owner, also owns Carter & Cooley Delicatessen next door. Sackheim said he has already made arrangements

for a replacement tenant in the space but will not reveal whom it is. “I will say it’s a local entrepreneur who will definitely add to the street and community,” Sackheim said. “I am very pleased because it will be a good addition. I am always watching out for the best interests of the Heights.” In the meantime, Hildebrand and Levine say their attention will go toward their other shops. “Our second store is different from Replay,” Hildebrand told The Leader in 2015. “The Room Upstairs has more art, and the boudoir is over the top. Just beautiful. It is also only open at night from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.” “The Room Upstairs is darker than Replay,” Levine said. “You may find a beautiful, retro rhinestone bracelet there too, but it will be displayed on a dead raccoon’s paw. It’s definitely stranger and it has added many hours to our work schedules, but we are happy to have it.” From now until Replay closes May 15, the store is featuring deep discounts for customers. Hildebrand said last Saturday was their busiest ever at Replay and that no reasonable offer will be refused in the store’s last days.

Pinemont from P. 1B construction will move to the north side of the street from Shepherd to Ella.” Medina said that access during construction is a high priority for Public Works and Engineering. “We work with adjacent businesses to minimize impacts, but even so business access is altered during construction,” he said. “Businesses along the Pinemont corridor have been provided direct contact information for PWE and the contractor to help address concerns.” Medina said that the Project Manager will reach out to Hartz Chicken and work to resolve their specific issues. While he says it’s a challenging time, Mak looks forward to the increased traffic of the new 4-lane. In the meantime, he’s dealing with the digging up of the culvert outside his front door. The giant pipe being placed under the new road still needs to be connected to the pipes coming from his building. “Now it’s my turn,” he said. “Hopefully it will be over soon.”

Crawfish from P. 1B “When Melinda decided to make a change in her career, I was at a point in my career where I was wanting to get closer to home, Melissa said. “I was the only child living farthest away, living in North Carolina. I worked in Special Forces and it kept me 90 percent on the road. I loved the job, I have so much respect for the military, but when the property came available I decided it was time to make a change. While you might read “Mels’ Seafood Shack and think the spelling is a typo, the spelling is, in fact, correct. Both sisters go by “Mel and so was born Mels’ Seafood Shack. You can venture to the seafood shack Thursday to Sunday and order boiled crawfish and fixings by the pound to take home or eat on the patio; BYOB being a nice perk with the patio. Another option: bring an ice chest and order live crawfish by the pound to take home. The sisters currently operate out of their food truck and have a setup for their weekend boil on-site. Crawfish isn’t the only thing you can find on the menu. Weekly specials currently rotate, with mac and cheese debris, roast beef and gravy, stuffed crawfish bell peppers and potato salad making the lineup in recent weeks. With crawfish season coming to a close in the next few weeks, the Mels are already thinking of what’s next. “When crawfish season is over, I plan on working on a lot of family recipes, Melissa said. “We’re growing the menu organically and talking to customers, asking what they like. Shrimp will be coming into season shortly and once we can get fresh shrimp, we’ll add that to the menu. The big item that Melissa is currently researching is New Orleans style po’boys, and she says she’s learned a lot. The bread for the po’boys will be from Gambino’s bakery in New Orleans, all NOLA products will go within the po’boy as well as a secret ingredient that Melissa is ready to share – Blue Plate mayonnaise. The sisters have plans for overstuffed shrimp, oyster, fish,

TRANSFORMING FOR THE FUTURE Letter to the Community: #3 in a series of updates on progress.

DEAR COMMUNITY: An exciting transformation is underway — one that has already started to elevate HCC to a new standard of excellence and a model for community colleges nationwide. Over the last year, we have streamlined operations to make it easier to work with the college, revolutionized the student experience, and fundamentally reshaped how we work with businesses and industry partners. We have also experienced near record graduation increases. Although this level of change takes time – especially with an institution of this scale – the early results speak volumes and show real promise for our college and community in the years ahead. We have made significant progress in improving our approach to finances throughout the institution. Highlights include: • • • • • • • • •

Maintained affordability for students, with no general tuition or fee increase since 2011 Funded new scholarship streams for students from the college’s auxiliary revenues Maintained affordability for taxpayers by reducing the Maintenance & Operations tax rate and increased exemption levels for elderly and disabled homeowners Finalized Compensation Study and implemented three-year plan to bring all salaries to midpoint of market rates Provided stable, ongoing funding stream for state-of-the-art equipment in Centers of Excellence .BJOUBJOFE à TDBMMZ SFTQPOTJCMF MFWFM PG 'VOE #BMBODF BOE JODSFBTFE JU 3FEFTJHOFE DPOTUSVDUJPO QSPKFDUT à OBODFE CZ (FOFSBM 0CMJHBUJPO CPOET UP FOTVSF BGGPSEBCJMJUZ and sustainability *ODSFBTFE USBOTQBSFODZ PG à OBODJBM USBOTBDUJPOT QPTUJOH DPMMFHF T DIFDL SFHJTUFS BOE FYFDVUJWF T monthly credit card statements online Formed ad-hoc Procurement Review Committee of external stakeholders to review and recommend enhancements to procurement practices

We recognize the changes in technology, business and society, and we are constantly adapting to help prepare our students for an ever-changing world. This strategy has enabled us to make significant progress in improving the student experience before, during, and after their time with us — as well as helping them secure higher paying jobs and entrance into the universities they want to attend. Our new approach is to explore ways to be more innovative and collaborative in order to better serve our students and our community. Highlights of recent innovative approaches include: • •

Providing dual credit to public school students for free — in and out of district Participating in Upstream/Midstream Skills Training & Safety Collaboration

As part of our Transformation process, we listened to students, community and business leaders, faculty and staff, and we studied best practices. We went to great lengths because of our duty to be responsive to the community and to be fully engaged with each other. The only way we can be Houston’s community college is to include the diversity, the people, and the thought that make our city so vibrant. After all, our students will go out into the same community with these companies and organizations. This lengthy process culminated with the development of our strategic plan for the future. At the heart of our strategic plan, known as “Imagine HCC 2019, are four overarching themes: Student Success, Organizational Stewardship, Performance Excellence, and Innovation. We are excited about what it means to the future of the college as we produce students who are prepared for whatever is next in their lives and careers. We are committed to ensuring quality instructional programs and courses, increasing student retention and persistence rates, servicing high-demand fields through skills training and credentialing programs, and improving the student experience. This is an important time for the college and for our community. We understand the vital role we play in helping the people of our community, young and old, obtain important education and skills and supporting the businesses that drive our economy. We will continue to push the boundaries and dare greatly together — so that we can achieve our vision and take HCC to new heights. In service,

Google Trekker now in area Union Kitchen hosts open house It’s hopefully going to be a late summer opening for Union Kitchen, 3405 Ella Plaza, according to Paul Miller of GR8 Plate Hospitality, who owns the Union Kitchen restaurants in Bellaire and Kingwood as well as the Jax Grills at S. Rice and Shepherd Drive and the Rollin’ Kitchen food truck. Rollin’ Kitchen was in the parking lot of Ella Plaza last week to serve up some food for the neighbors at an open house. Miller offered tours of the newly demoed space which includes the former Golden Wok and Frida’s. The completed restaurant will have a 25 x 50 foot patio, a 40 foot bar, a banquet room and public dining. There will be some new menu items at the Ella location too. Miller said he’s been looking to find a spot in Oak Forest for a “really long time” and thinks the Ella Plaza location is a great fit. New tenants for Pinemont Pavilion Neighborhood curiosity was piqued when an application for a wine and beer permit turned up in the window of Pinemont Pavilion. Nikki Thomas confirms that she and Darren Greenwood – who runs the kitchen at Petrol Station – are opening Ploughman’s Deli and Café, hopefully in September. “We are in the neighborhood and love it here,” said Thomas. White brings extensive experience from The Trust For Public Land, where she served as director for the Chicago region, overseeing the development of Chicago’s innovative park and elevated trail system, The 606. Houston’s bayou trails now on Google Trekker The partnership between the Houston Parks Board and Google has culminated in the launch of the Google Trekker images of Houston’s bayou trails. Make a lunch kids will devour For The Leader Children can be picky eaters, making it challenging for parents to find foods their kids will consume. Family dinners are challenging enough, but lunches kids will love can be even more difficult to come by. Parents can prepare lunches kids are certain to devour by thinking outside of the traditional lunch box. Using some creativity and building off of kids’ favorite foods is the key. Make it miniature Mini versions of kids’ favorite foods can be entertaining and entice children to try things they normally wouldn’t. If it’s fun-sized, it can be swallowed in one bite. Think about mini sandwiches cut into fun shapes with a cookie cutter. Or use little condiment cups to hold chicken salad, soup or yogurt. Offer variety Give kids a bit of a buffet inside of their lunches. This way, if something isn’t tickling their taste buds, they still have other healthy options at the ready. This technique also ensures that kids will not get hungry after skipping meals.

Lunch buffets do not have to be complicated. Include half of a sandwich, a piece of fruit or an applesauce cup, some trail mix, and a granola bar. Look for complex carbohydrates and protein so that little bellies will feel full. Go with what works If a child really enjoyed the previous night’s dinner, offer up a repeat for lunch the next day. Some schools have a microwave where hot foods can be reheated. If that’s not available, invest in a thermos or a durable, insulated container that can keep the foods at a comfortable temperature. Lunchtime at school occurs not too far into the day, and it’s feasible that food can still be warm if heated right before leaving the house. Sneak in some nutrition If kids are bound to eat the same thing over and over again, mix it up in subtle ways. Add a slice of tomato to a plain cheese sandwich and serve it on whole-wheat bread for added nutrition. Blend cauliflower into mac-and-cheese so it’s barely noticeable. Add flavor to lunch meats with a piece of bacon. Bake up nutritious cereal bars on your own

that pack a nutritious punch and could have pureed fruit as the base. Breakfast for lunch Most kids go ga-ga over breakfast foods. Use that to your advantage, sending them in with egg-bacon-cheese bagel sandwiches, or some cereal to which they can add milk bought from the cafeteria. Thin pancakes can be rolled and stuffed with fruit in a crêpe style that makes for a

tempting treat. Rely on school lunch School lunches shouldn’t be dismissed. When the pantry and refrigerator simply aren’t offering up the right inspiration, let children try something provided by their schools. They may like the menu, and that will save you time and effort in the morning. Plus, many school lunches are designed to be nutritionally balanced.

RegisteR today online! at Candlelight Park After playing soccer, your child may exhibit the following side effects: Happiness, Becoming Fit, Making Friends, and a Can-Do Attitude.
