Capturing Culture the ‘Krishna’ Way New
By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com While The Leader has many businesses nestled in the many business parks in the area, perhaps none is more unique than Krishna Culture, located in the Brookwood Business Park at 3522 East TC Jester Blvd. Offering everything from statues of Hindu deities to saris, posters, paintings, incense, meditation beads, yoga clothing and more, Krishna Culture attracts customers from the Hindu faith as well as those outside of it. Manager Jiva Parker said 12 years ago the store moved from its location near the Hare Krishna Temple & Cultural Center on 34th street to its present location. “We needed more space, said Parker, who noted that the business itself began 35 years ago in Philadelphia. He said the owners looked nearby for a new location because they sell a lot of their merchandise to the temple store and also because Krishna Culture’s employees wanted to be close to the temple for spiritual reasons. The store is both retail and wholesale and there are three full-time paid staff members. Parker said that they get about four shipments of merchandise a year. About half of it comes from India and the other half, primarily the statues and canvas prints, come from their own manufacturer in China. Aside from supplying the temple, Krishna Culture also supplies its wares to Indian grocery stores and yoga studios. The yoga pants they sell are not the modern spandex but the more traditional pant worn by practitioners. Customers not from the Hare Krishna Temple find them through the Internet or word of mouth. “They find us on Google when they are searching for tabla (Hindu percussion instrument) or harmonium (a type of reed organ), said Parker. He said more than 50 percent of customers are not from the temple, but rather Hindus from other temples or those who aren’t affiliated with any temple or Hindu sect. “They’re looking for clothing, said Parker. The statues are a big draw

There are also plenty of statues of Rama (the embodiment of chivalry and virtue), Shiva (the god of the yogis) and Durga (the mother of the universe). “The whole upstairs is overstock [of statues], said Parker. One recent customer was Hanumatpresaka Swami who is also known by Professor Huber Hutchin Robinson. He is a monk who was in town to visit the temple on his way to India and wanted to pick up some children’s books to take back to his community in Murfreesboro, TN.

There is no place on Earth Tina Ozcelik would rather live than the Houston Heights. For this busy wife, businesswoman and mother of two youngsters, the Heights offers the type of community she most admires. “A wonderful blend of neighbors of different ages, cultures, backgrounds and professions, Ozcelik said. “I grew up on Houston’s westside. There, everything was the same. It was a cookie-cutter neighborhood. In the Heights, everything and everyone is unique. We love it here. While motherhood keeps her on the run, so too does Ozcelik’s business. She is the founder of Houston’s three Eye Gallery stores, which features up-to-the-minute fashion eye wear and are renowned for caring customer service. Eye Gallery stores can be found in Rice Village, and River Oaks with the newest one located in the Whole Foods center on Post Oak Blvd. “I work six days a week and you might not think that the Heights would be the best
choice of locations to get from home to the stores, but it is, Ozcelic said. “I can be at any one of the locations in 10 minutes, depending on Houston’s unpredictable traffic. The entrepreneur is the first to state that eye wear has taken on a new life in recent years. While many women grew up with the old chestnut, “boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses, things have changed dramatically. “Yes, we went through the ‘minimalist’ trend, when many of the glasses were rimless, and tried to be invisible, Ozcelik remembered. “That trend has moved on. Eyewear is now one of the strongest statements regarding personal style one can make. Today, fashion designers will often choose to put models in glasses to compliment their designs. Are you a person who wants to celebrate your artistic side? Try a sculptural pair of glasses in a bold color. Are you funloving? How about a design in pink and lime green? Looking to project credibility? Look no further than CNN. Nearly all its news anchors wear glasses of some sort - both the men and

Do You Have Enough?
Heights entrepreneur has ‘eye’ for success with Eye Gallery stores Kim Hogstrom For The Leader
Houston, TX 77092
Retirees today are hard pressed to reply to this basic question, “Do you have enough? When planning for retirement income, the answer often eludes them. Do you have enough to live on the rest of your life at the current standard of living? If you are like the majority of baby boomers retiring today, you will need enough money to last for thirty-five years. To keep pace with inflation, your income will need to double during this time or it will fall behind in purchasing power. Low interest rates on savings, money markets, and bonds add difficulty to the already daunting task of creating income endurance. Most financial advisors recommend a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds with an initial withdrawal rate of 4%. A $1,000,000 portfolio would distribute 4% or $40,000 in year one and then the income amount would increase each year by 2.5% to keep pace with inflation. Morningstar Investment Research revealed this strategy had only a 50% probability of lasting to the end of both lives of a married couple! Many retirees may rely more frequently on the stock market as the investment of choice to provide income over their lifetimes. After all, the stock market is at an all time high and historically has given the highest rate of long term growth. However, if you retired with $1,000,000 in 1999, invested the money in the S&P 500 and drew out 4% with annual increases to keep pace with inflation, today you would have less than $160,000 in remaining value! While the stock market has reclaimed all time highs for the long term investor, sadly this is not the case for a retired person in need of income.

the women. One of the reasons Ozcelik is devoted to her business is because she truly enjoys it. “It is so much fun when a client comes in and tries on something unusual or unexpected. They are often surprised that an uncommon design can really reflect their personality. It’s a very rewarding experience for me, she said. Originally, Ozcelik graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in biology, and entered the eyewear industry
in 1995. She often travels the world in search of new ideas, inspirations and design concepts. Her keen sense of design and experience as a buyer has helped her arrive at the top of her profession. Ozcelik is also quick to credit her success to her associates. “I have the most wonderful staff in the stores. They really care about our clients, and that makes all the difference. I could not do it without them, Ozcelik said.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Hildebrand Foundation pledges $10 million for bayous The Houston Parks Board announced April 22 that the Hildebrand Foundation has pledged $10 million in support of the Parks Board’s Bayou Greenways 2020 project, a citywide public-private endeavor that will create a system of connected, green linear parks and trails along Houston’s major bayous. The initiative will add 1,500 acres of new park space to Houston and provide connected trails along nine of the major bayous in the city limits – 80 miles of new allweather hike and bike trails, connecting existing disconnected pieces for a total of 150 miles of bayou trails. The $220 million project is being funded by $100 million in city bonds, approved by Houston voters in 2012, and by $120 million in private funds being raised by the Houston Parks Board. More than $90 million has been raised to date, including the most recent pledge from the Hildebrand Foundation. Updates on Ella Plaza The most recent update for Ella Plaza, includes a new sign which very nearly replicates the iconic old one as well as signed contracts from Marco’s Pizza and Thrive Vet. which also owns Ella Plaza and the Harolds in the Heights development on 19th Street. Dan Braun said that the building will remain a restaurant and that they are looking for the “right local user. In other news, Braun has also purchased the car dealership at 1919 North Shepherd. Scarborough High School celebrates senior signing with Southern University for Division I track & cross country By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com Basketball Coach and newly named Athletic Director Martin Wall said it has been a long time since a student like Jorge Martinez signed with a school like Southern University. “He’s a great kid and a great competitor,” Wall said. While there have been previous signings at Division III schools in the past, Martinez signed a Division I athletic scholarship for track & cross country, marking a first in a long time for the school. His signing earlier this month attracted administrators and students to celebrate the event. Martinez said it felt great to be headed to Baton Rouge and said each of his teachers had a small part in making it happen. “It’s great to put Scarborough High School’s name out there in a positive way, as the name seems to always be on the negative side,” Martinez said. Martinez thanked teacher Sarah Ray in particular along with Wall.
Contributed Photo (From left to right) Junior Rachel Hardy, Coach Jim Hardy and Junior Kade Stewart. Photo by Jonathan Garris Jorge Martinez kisses the forehead of his sister, Elizabeth Montes, after signing with Southern University with an athletic scholarship for track & cross country.
“If it wasn’t for her I would have never known I could have run,” Martinez said. “I’m also really thankful for Coach Wall’s guidance.” He emphasized that keeping up good grades would come first but he is looking forward to making a name for SU. Martinez’s older sister, Elizabeth Montes, also attended the signing and said it was an emotional event for her family. Things haven’t been simple for their family and she said the signing is a huge event not
only for the school and the community, but for the rest of her family as well. “I know it hasn’t been easy for him as we come from divorced parents and it has been a hard journey for him,” Montes said. “There are no words to describe how proud I am of him and I’m here to support him with ever decision he makes.” Martinez also had the chance to thank his fellow students at the signing and said he couldn’t have done it without their support either.
SCAC Softball Offensive Player of the Week
St. Pius X Golfers take first at Regionals For The Leader After winning the golf district title, St. Pius X High School junior Rachel Hardy reeled in the girls’ regional championship with a 78, while junior Kade Stewart shot a two-under-par 70 to take home the boys’ regional title. Hardy was in second place after day one, trailing by five strokes, but came back on day two on a tough course, under extreme pressure. “I have to say that watching Rachel play from tee to green is exactly like watching a DI college player, only better,” said head coach Jim Hardy. “Rachel’s steady ball striking is tough for anyone to hang with at this level.”
Stewart held a one-shot lead with a 74 after day one. After nine holes on day two, Stewart was tied for first after shooting one under par. On the back nine, his steady play along with some timely birdies put the regional title firmly in his hands. “Kade’s two-under-par 70 today was a clinic on how to win on a tough course with the competition breathing down your neck,” said Hardy. As a team, the Panther girls earned the fourth and final state-qualifying spot by a four-shot margin. Lacey Hardy, Macie Mateja, Ashley Solorio, and Hollan Hall will join Hardy and Stewart at state. Despite cutting its first day score by 30 shots on day
two, the boys team, consisting of Stewart, Grant Gunter, Sam Vitulli, Frank Luciano and Anthony Solorio, fell short of qualifying for state. Oak Forest Elementary student wins South Texas PGA Little Linksters Championship A Leader-area kid channeled his inner Jack Nicklaus this month, winning the South Texas PGA Little Linksters Boys Championship at Northgate Country Club. Nicholas Standley, a 10year-old boy from Shepherd Park Plaza, shot one over par 71, beating boys and girls from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Beaumont, The Valley, Corpus Christi and Bryan-College Station, his father Cole Standley said. Standley said Nicholas first started practicing when he was 5 years old and he just turned 10 a few weeks ago. “His best score was actually on the second day of this tournament,” Standley said in an email. “He shot a one under par, 34 (9 holes). He had shot even par on numerous occasions but had yet to break par, until Sunday.” Nicholas has since been invited to play in the Insperity Champions Tour Junior ProAm, which took place April 28, where he was paired with a

Explore the ways to show you care this Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is the one day each year when men, women and children across the country gather to honor the mothers in their lives. Though it can be challenging to find new and unique ways to display your affection for Mom on Mother’s Day, rest assured that sometimes the simplest concepts are the ones mothers most appreciate. This year, look no further than the following ideas for some inspiration as you aim to make this Mother’s Day as special as possible for the mother or mothers in your life. · Give the gift of sweet treats. What better way to highlight mom’s sweetness than with some delicious
treats made just for her? Whether you decide to whip up some homemade confections in the kitchen or visit a nearby store for something decadent, mom will no doubt appreciate the chance to indulge on her big day. Moms who prefer cookies and portable snacks will no doubt enjoy Pocky and Péjoy biscuit sticks. These tasty snacks from Gilco are dipped or filled with popular flavors, such as chocolate and strawberry, and are now available with green tea cream. Pair with a cup of tea, coffee or whichever beverage mom prefers to complement her favorite treat. Pocky is available in most grocery stores, and can typically be found in
the Asian food section. · Make a meal to remember. Mom deserves a night off from dinner detail, and while dining out is an option, a homemade meal may come across as more intimate and heartfelt. Thanks to kitchen appliances that make it easier than ever to prepare gourmet meals at home, you can now make restaurant-style meals in your kitchen without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste. For example, new tacook Rice Cookers from Tiger Corporation do more than just perfectly steam rice. They also incorporate synchro-cooking to cook two different items at once. Present mom with her favorite Asian-inspired poultry-and-
rice dish or use the cooker to easily bake bread or steam a side of vegetables. Pair the meal with her favorite wine and make sure you handle all the cleanup. While mom waits for dinner to be served, a soothing cup of tea can set the tone for a relaxing evening. The Tiger Hot Water Kettle boils water in seconds. With three temperature settings and a de-chlorination cycle for removing chemical tastes and odors, the kettle allows mom to quickly enjoy a cup of her favorite brew. These kitchen essentials are available at Bed, Bath and Beyond. · Plan a Mother’s Day picnic. Busy moms may look forward to a break from the
bustle of daily routines. An afternoon picnicking outdoors can be the ideal way to enjoy a special Mother’s Day. Plan an easy menu of foods that have portability. It’s easy to transport hot or cold foods when you have Tiger Stainless Steel Thermal Wares on hand. A refreshing fruit salad can be kept cool for about 8 hours. If mom prefers pasta primavera, the thermal container can keep it warm and ready until it’s time to enjoy. Gifting is made easy when you tap into the things mom likes. Learn more about these gift ideas and more at www.pocky.com and http:// usa.tiger-corporation.com. TF155225
Moms are sure to appreciate Mother’s Day celebrations focused on food, pampering and fun.
to Mom, with love.
