Taking time for a tune-up

Alice David draws ideas for her custom sticker business, www. stuckonme.net, from daughters AnaCorynn and Kendall.

by Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader Car technology is changing, so the retro full-service garage repairing them has been getting a bit of a tune-up itself, says Katherine Van der Pol, who co-owns Adolph Hoepfl Garage with husband Sybren Van der Pol. The couple took on the 1946founded mechanic shop, located at 4610 N. Shepherd Dr., nearly a decade ago and has blended new customers into the established and loyal base of long-term regulars. “We’re taking care of customers, and that will take care of business,” she said. Still, the opportunity to grow a better business presented itself last year through the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program at Houston Community College. A respected business colleague told Kathryn Van der Pol, who serves as president of Hoepfl, that she “really needed” to apply. “The biggest thing I learned is that you have to grow your business constantly,” she said of the intensive, three-month training endeavor ending in December 2012. “You can’t rest on past success.” Her role as president has evolved since participating in the intensive business management program. Now more focused on the company’s vision and long-range growth strategy, she is developing operations processes and integrating them into the company, as well as working on training, hiring, a marketing campaign and public outreach. The growth plan comes from the class, she said: “It’s why you’re there.” Owning a small business and taking the class meant the course materials had particular relevance, meaning and immediacy, she said. Unlike the theoretical case studies encountered in a college business class, the program used participants’ companies, which lent reality and a been-there-tried-that element. The class schedule, mostly evenings and weekends, meant Van der Pol didn’t miss much at the garage. However, the family-owned company’s family members, technicians and staff had been given opportunities to stretch their own responsibilities a bit. Those who stepped it up a bit in her absence have retained some of the responsibilities they took on, she said. While the program’s content was beneficial, the networking of co-participants from a variety of

Show and tell: Van der Pol shows off the replica 1957 Corvette engine and copy of the U.S. Constitution that she brought to the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program to illustrate the mission of the automotive repair business she operates with her husband. (Photo by Cynthia Lescalleet) small businesses – called “cohorts” – was a real boon, she said, because they shared an interest in improving themselves, their companies and their employees.

The road map ahead

The garage’s growth plan is based on the idea of adapting to newer cars -- the hybrids, hightech and conversions of the industry. Toward that, she said, technicians will continue to tackle targeted training, and the 11-bay building will be getting some updates – but only at its non-historic end. “Our architecture is an asset to helping our clients feel at home and (at) a place they can trust. We are not changing that!,” she said in a follow-up email. The higher tech service area will ultimately be toward the front of the shop. Van der Pol, previously a high school teacher at an elite Houston prep school, said she had no formal business training when the couple took on the garage. In support of her role there, she had taken classes, seminars and automotive shop training as need dictated and time permitted. Because of that lack of financial literacy, she found the small busi-

ness program’s financial modules “eye-opening.” She also gleaned the importance of having processes for many aspects of running a business. In hiring, for example, getting a job description correctly identified and honed first ultimately attracted a better candidate. The program’s “prop” exercise proved especially effective, for it helped identify – or in her case solidify -- the company culture. The exercise had students bring in items that represent their business’s mission. She presented two in tandem: a 1957 Corvette motor replica and a copy of U.S. Constitution – the latter an item on display and in ready supply at the automotive shop. Both represent independence and freedom to travel, she explained. “We love cars and we love the USA.” Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is a $500 million national program designed to help small businesses in the U.S. create jobs and economic growth by providing entrepreneurs with a practical business education, access to capital and business support services. Applications are due on the 15th of every month. For information, visit http://sites.hccs. edu/10ksb/.

Memorial Hermann, BCBSTX settle rate dispute With a Monday deadline looming that could have cut off Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas customers from most services in the Memorial Hermann healthcare system, the two sides have reached an agreement that will keep the healthcare giant — including Memorial Hermann Northwest — as a provider, it was announced Friday. According to the announcement, that also includes the Memorial Hermann Physical Network as providers. “The finalized agreement focuses BCBSTX and Memorial Hermann on strategies to provide increased value in health care services for the Houston community,” according to the announcement. The negotiations centered around reimbursement

levels, with the insurance company seeking to keep rates as low as possible and Memorial Hermann countering that increased levels of care in their Houston facilities warranted higher reimbursement.

Inspiration for a new business can strike in the unlikeliest of places. For Garden Oaks’ Alice David, the “aha” moment for her new venture, www.stuckonme.net, came while washing clothes. “The idea of making large stickers to put on kids came to me in early 2011 when I was doing my girls’ laundry and had to peel off numerous stickers from their shirts,” said David. “I realized how much they love to stick them on their clothes, no matter whether they came from a birthday party, doctor’s office or the grocery store.” Then she thought about the tough time she had keeping track of her children at the park a couple of days before and how it would have been helpful to have something eye catching on them for identification purposes. Over the next year, David spent a lot of time thinking about how she might put her stamp on the custom sticker market. “I looked at sticker websites and all the ones I saw had stickers that were nowhere near the size I wanted for mine,” she said. “They were all 2-3” or smaller and were being used to label items with names.” David’s stickers would not just be bigger but would also incorporate lots of color and fun designs so that kids can accessorize with them. “I used [my daughters] favorite colors and prints when coming up with my first round of stickers as well as things we like to do in our home such as fist bump each other and give high fives,” she said. David thinks the stickers will appeal to both boys and girls. And to their parents. Because the stickers are large – 5.75” in diameter, people can easily spot their kids, or even their stuff, in crowds or a large public set-

ting. “People could use them for anything from a destination birthday party to a ski trip,” David said. She can also see a market for adults. Her stickers might keep a group together during a corporate event or be employed to mark luggage and golf bags. “You could use them on a tent to let your family and friends know where you have dug in your stakes at the next group camping trip,” said David. When David was doing the graphics for the stickers and designing her website, she spent about four hours a day on the business. For feedback on potential stickers, she utilized an informal focus group of her friends’ children. Once the first batch was in house – printed by a local label making company – she gave some out to testers to see if she needed to do any more tweaking. Right now, she distributes her stickers via mail or personal drop off. She’s a good customer, too. The stickers will come in handy with her family over the busy days of summer. In the fall, she plans to reach out to schools to learn how she might best serve their needs. David, who studied English at University of Houston and court reporting at Houston Community College, was born and raised in Houston. She’s lived in Garden Oaks since 2001. Both of her parents had their own small businesses and David attributes her entrepreneurial spirit in part to them. “I truly just want to help my family by contributing financially to my household, make my own hours, be creative in my job, include my kids in it and work out of my home so I’ll always be around to help them with school and activities,” said David. “Find what you love to do and you’ll never “work” a day in your life, right? What could be better than that?” To learn more, visit www.stuckonme.net

The people part of your business Running a business can be tough. Planning, money, marketing and production are all requirements that you, the owner, must consider as you launch and grow a business. One of the most challenging parts of having your own business is the people part-having employees that will form the backbone of your organization. When a business has grown to the point of adding employees it can be a major shock to learn of all the laws and requirements that an owner must know and follow. In fact, many entrepreneurs and small business owners do not understand the seriousness of this aspect of the business. While the business owner has been focused on launching the business, the employees may not share the same drive, desire and passion to make the business the world-class operation the owner thinks it is. Consider: •The role and responsibilities of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and how they affect your business •The laws (and consequences) of hiring “undocumented” workers •The posters and information that you are required to display for your employees to view •The laws and regulations for minimum wage and overtime requirements. •The laws regulating the ques-

DON BALL Small Business Consultant, Lone Star College

tions that can be asked (and those that cannot be asked!) during an interview. •The difference between a “Contractor” (often referred to as a “1099 worker”) and an “Employee”. Consider these four basic areas: Regulations; Hiring practices; Technology, and the Affordable Healthcare Act. There are strict Federal and State guidelines for handling your employees. Consider the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) and the Texas Workforce Commission, just two organizations that provide the guidelines for handling your employees. While it is relatively easy to know the laws, following them can be challenging. As the owner of this business you must set the policies and enforce them equally across all employees and departments. Do you have a policy manual that each employee is required to read and acknowledge that they will follow? Taking this step (for

every employee) can be a critical first step in establishing the guidelines for how you will treat your employees. Hiring the right employee is important, but HOW you hire (and fire!) are equally important. What you say and don’t say during an interview can position you for problems in the future. Think, also of the way you manage your employees. If you have a drug testing program, that’s fine. But the test needs to be administered equally among all employees and the ramifications must be consistent across all employees as well. What about technology in the workplace? It is important to establish policies and procedures for computer use, especially when it comes to the internet and email. Many an employee has found themselves in trouble for sending emails they should not have or “surfing the internet” when they were supposed to be working. Even more important is the use of mobile devices. While these devices have certainly facilitated the communication between all parties, the practice of texting while driving is not just illegal in many places, but is just dangerous. If your employees do this (with your permission) and have an accident, who do you think will be held liable? Something to think about! The Affordable Healthcare Act that became law will go into effect on January 1, 2014. The law has

many provisions and requirements that will affect the way small business owners operate and manage their finances. If a company has fewer than 50 full time equivalent employees the impact will not be as great. However, those with more than 50 full time employees must offer affordable healthcare to their employees or face a fine of up to $2,000 per employee. While there are many details that surround this Act, the bottom line is that a small business owner should not wait until the last minute to learn about the law and how it will impact his business. Search for workshops and meet with your insurance and healthcare providers to be able to make the right decision for your business and your employees. These are just a few of the areas that must be considered as new employees are added to the company. Fortunately, in addition to the SBDC, both the local office of the EEOC and the Texas Workforce Commission can provide training and guidance on these and more issues impacting employers. I don’t believe that opportunity knocks. It’s extremely rare that somehow an amazing opportunity is dropped on your lap. Usually if something seems too good to be true, it is. I think the process is way more subtle but requires finesse. I believe opportunities surround us on a daily basis, but you must be open to seeing them. For example, a shoe manufacturer sends out two salespeople to explore potential new markets in southern Africa. The first salesperson emails back “what a waste….no one here wears shoes.” The second salesperson emails back “Wow, there is untapped potential….no one here wears shoes!” It’s a great example of having an open mind to possibilities. Whether you’re looking for a new job, wanting to expand your sales revenue or want to make a change, but don’t know what you want to do, there are opportunities available for you. To accomplish any of those three goals, you need to utilize all of your resources. That starts with the “Law of Attraction.” Decide on what you want, and then take all of the necessary steps to help you get there. Here are five simple things you can do to attract opportunities. 1- READ everything you can put your hands on about the topic. With the great Houston library system and all of the amazing resources

Chiropractor leads round up of critters Northwest Chiropractic Center is conducting its 10th annual Cuddly Critter Drive to collect new stuffed animals for the Houston Police Department to use in helping children at crime or accident scenes. Dr. George Junkin of the Northwest Chiropractic Center and Sgt. Frank Escobedo of the North Division show off a collection from a previous drive. New patients donating a new

medium- to large-size critter will receive their chiropractic exam and two X-rays for free. Existing patients who donate will receive a chiropractic adjustment for free on July 16. For information or to schedule an appointment, call 713686-0828. The practice also has a website at www.DrJunkin.com and a Northwest Chiropractic Center Facebook page.

Timbergrove resident Zach Barfuss began doing artwork as a hobby, but it’s since morphed into a valuable second job and a lifelong passion. “People would say ‘why are you wasting your time? There’s no money in art’” Barfuss said. “If you’re good at something and you have a passion at something, it’s not up to other people whether you succeed.” It was that doubt that motivated the Bellaire native to pursue art, in addition to his full-time job in oil and gas software sales. Barfuss, a 34-year-old graduate of St. Thomas High and Southwest Texas State University, sold his first painting for $50, and current works are going for $800-1,000. He’s been able to use social media to market his business effectively, saying that 95 percent of his sales come from Facebook. Barfuss has only done one art showing, which was held in Lafayette, La. But due to the social media demand, he has a two-month waiting list for painting requests. “I sell them so quickly on Face-

book,” he said. “I’ve sold 416 paintings in 10 years. I have over 25 people who bought more than one and one person who bought seven. When I sell a painting on Facebook, I tag the person, so all of their friends can see the painting.” All of Barfuss’ paintings are acrylic, and they run the gamut from abstract and landscapes to celebrities. He recently sold a painting of Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny “Football” Manziel. Barfuss also did a portrait for Miami Heat forward Rashard Lewis, a Houston native who earned his first NBA championship ring this season. Barfuss was a competitive baseball player at STH, who also played basketball and football. A test that he took in high school revealed that his “creative reasoning scores are off the charts.” He majored in mass communications/advertising at SWT and earned a minor in art, posting a 3.9 grade point average in those courses. Barfuss and his fiancee, Brooke, are getting married later this summer. They plan on collaborating on a children’s book.

HOLLAND

Other proud relatives include his brother, Clint, and grandfather Kenneth Thompson.

FISCHER Jared Fischer, active with the U.S. Navy since 2005, is being recognized by his mother, Kim Fischer-Thomas, a Realtor with Prudential Premier Properties in Oak Forest. Jared was born in Heights Hospital in 1984, graduated from Jersey Village High in 2002 and Sam Houston State University in 2005. He is married with two daughters and currently stationed in Georgia.

VILLANUEVA

Xavier Roger Villanueva, a 2011 graduate of Aldine High School, enlisted in the Army following graduation and is serving at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. He is being honored by his mother, Gloria Gonzales, who works for Aldine ISD, and is also the son of Rudy Villanueva. Other proud family includes sisters Felicia Byford, Denisha Duron and Rebecca Villanueva and brother Rudy Villanueva, Jr.

GARZA

Sgt. Xavier Garza is back with the First Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kan., after serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan last year. He is a 2003 graduate of Scarborough High School.

RUSK

Marine Staff Sgt. Harrison G. Rusk is currently serving as a tactical air controller at Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona after three combat tours in the infantry in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Heights resident Clifford “Richard” Jenke experienced and accomplished more by the time he turned 18 years old than many people do in a lifetime. Jenke, 86, was less than four months into his freshman year at Reagan High on Dec. 7, 1941 – the day that the Imperial Japanese Army bombed Pearl Harbor, prompting the United States to join World War II. The USS Houston, which Jenke visited in 1939 when it was docked in Houston, departed Pearl Harbor for Australia the same night as the attacks. He remembered that and like many of his classmates, he wanted to join the war effort so he could protect his country, which included “a wonderful school and wonderful teachers” at Reagan. He was a halfback for the Bulldogs’ football team there. The only problem was his age – he was two years short of 17 – the minimum age to join the U.S. military. “I lied about my age to join the U.S. Navy,” Jenke said. “I had a heck of a time getting my mom to yes. At boot camp in San Diego, some of the guys questioned me about my age. My mom said, ‘you’ve made your bed, now you have to lay in it’.” Jenke served on a Navy submarine in Australia and helped defend the Aussies against the Japanese. He earned three Gold Stars and a Silver Star and helped sink more than one enemy submarines.

One of his fellow sailors now lives in Pearland and credits Jenke’s submarine with rescuing his own. Jenke met Navy Lt. John F. Kennedy, who would go on to serve as U.S. President from 1961 to 1963. He said JFK told him he heard all Texans were tall, so why was Jenke so short. Jenke responded with a tall tale. Along with his fellow sailors, Jenke received encouragement during a speech from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and also spoke with Fleet Admiral “Bull” Halsey. Jenke returned to Houston in 1945 and finished his high school diploma. He continued his career in the Navy, serving in the Korean War in the early 1950s. He retired from the military in 1954. “My mom said get out and give me some grandchildren,” said Jenke, who has four children, including two who served in the First Gulf War in the early 1990s. Upon retirement, Jenke worked as an electronics salesman and also as a Navy recruiter. By that time, potential sailors had to present a birth certificate if they wanted to enlist. Jenke, who now lives with his wife, Irma, in the Heights, enjoys gardening and spending time with friends and family. When July 4th comes is mentioned, there’s one word that comes to Jenke’s mind. “Freedom,” he said. “It’s why I gave up my childhood to protect it.”

Kasey Smith escaped Houston’s heat and humidity as she took a refreshing summer trip to Washington State. She visited Mt. Rainier, hiked for the first time through mountains and valleys, played in the snow, and thoroughly enjoyed the city scene in Seattle. Kasey owns her own business, Kakes by Klassic, and makes amazing cakes rivaling those seen on the Food Network. Check out the photos on www.facebook.com/kakesbyklassic. We have some seriously talented neighbors, folks. Apex Tae Kwon-Do held its first Parents Night Out and it was a funtastic success. Parents dropped off their children ranging in age from 4 to 13 and went on to enjoy a night out while their kiddos played dodgeball and board games (remember Sorry and Candyland?), had great fun with whipped cream, watched movies and snacked on all kinds of favorite treats. The purpose of the event was to fundraise for scholarships for Apex’s classes for students with Down Syndrome, and a whopping $590 was raised. Fritz C. Baumgarten April 25th, 1923 - June 24th, 2013

Fritz C. Baumgarten entered into eternal rest on June 24th, 2013. He was born in Schulenburg, Texas on April 25th, 1923; he is preceded in death by his father Fritz C. Baumgarten and his mother Katie B. Storey. In his passing he is also preceded by his first wife Ruth F. Click Baumgarten, and second wife Esther C. Baumgarten. He is survived by his loving children, daughter Connie Sue Holley, son Keith Baumgarten and wife Lori, son Tracy Baumgarten, granddaughters Jennifer Holley and husband Eric, Dr. Janelle Baumgarten and fiancé, Ross Johnson and Kristin Baumgarten and Thomas Denson, a brother Larry Baumgarten and wife Faye of El Paso. Companion, Shirley Williams. Growing up in Schulenburg he was an altar boy at St. Rose Lima Catholic Church. Fritz, a devout Catholic, was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church Community for many years. He was a Charter member of the Men’s Club, Golden Youth member, Parish Council member, Bazaar Committee member and served as an Usher. His donations, acts of kindness, and support of various ministries will remain his legacy... Some of his fondest memories were fishing, hunting, camping and spending all his time with his family in the outdoors over the years. After 33 years of dedicated service he retired from Shell Oil Company in 1986. In the twilight of his life, his passion was traveling and taking numerous trips throughout the country... He enjoyed life to the fullest and lived each day as though it was his last. His personality and sense of humor brought smiles and happiness to many faces throughout his life. His loss will be deeply felt by the many who knew him, and all who loved him! With great gratitude the family wants to thank the Methodist Medical Center Hospital for the doctors, colleagues, nurses, and entire staff for the love and devotion that they have shown for our Father. We commend their work and efforts to try to get our Dad back to the quality of life which he wanted to live. God bless you all for all you did for our Dad.

We love you Dad and Pepa!

By Molly Sue McGillicutty Pop! Crack! Fizzle! Is that the sound of residual Fourth of July fireworks that you’re hearing or...could it be your poor pet’s joints as he slowly stands up? Does your pet seem stiff first thing in the morning? Is she more irritable than she used to be? Have you noticed some muscle atrophy? No matter what your pet’s age, these symptoms could be indicators that he or she is suffering from arthritis. “Arthritis can attack bones and joints in animals the same way the disease does in humans,” said Zachary Goodrich, veterinary resident instructor at Texas A&M University--College of Veterinary Medicine. “However some animals, especially dogs, can be affected by arthritis at a much younger age than humans generally are. Some pets will be affected by arthritis before they are even one year old.” For our friends at Texas A&M University, the disease of arthritis hits particularly close to home. Texas A&M’s noble mascot, Reveille VII, passed away recently at the age of 12 1/2. Reveille suffered from arthritis and, due to the good fortune of residing on the campus of our state’s foremost college of veterinary medicine, received every medical intervention possible. The students and doctors at A&M were able to help make her arthritis more manageable--all the while allowing the veterinary students the opportunity to explore what exercises and supplements seemed to make a difference in her condition. Arthritis can be worsened by obesity, due to strain the additional weight Ad # the 36378 puts on joints. “Consistent, low-impact

exercise such as walking and swimming helps maintain good muscle mass as well as keeping your pet at an ideal body weight,” said Goodrich. “Walking in water is helpful for arthritis because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on the joints, allowing for more comfortable movement,” added clinical professor, Jacqueline Davidson. “In addition, the water provides some resistance, which helps promote leg strength.” Fish oil and glucosamine supplements are helpful in the treatment (and possibly the prevention of) arthritis. Your vet can also prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs as well as pain medications to help a pet who is already suffering the effects of arthritis. However, never give your pets human medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can cause serious harm to your pet’s stomach, kidneys, and liver.

A Visitation was held at Pat H. Foley & Co Funeral Directors 1200 W. 34th Houston TX on Sunday June 30th followed with a Holy Rosary. Funeral Mass was held Monday July 1 at 10:00 am St Ambrose Catholic Church. Interment followed at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

We Can All Help Prevent Drug Resistant Germs

Emerging antibiotic resistant germs are a real concern to the human and animal healthcare communities. Yes, we will need better drugs in the future, but at the front line of this never-ending battle, we primarily need responsible people so germ mutations never start. The overuse of antibiotics is dictated by doctors but driven by everyday people. Doctors prescribe unnecessary amounts due to lifestyles that could be improved upon for the benefit of all.

Preventative Medicine helps to Prevent antibiotic overuse, this Prevents drug resistant germs.

Obviously, proper shelter, water, nutrition, hygiene, cleaning, and waste management are key to germ control. Fewer antibiotics are used if good practices are in place. As for Veterinary Preventative Medicine, we can prevent antibiotic overuse by promoting: 1. Proper Vaccine programs 2. Internal Parasite Control Programs - Heartworms/worms 3. External Parasite Control Programs - Fleas/Ticks & others 4. Dental Care Programs - Both professional and HomeCare These programs would significantly reduce respiratory, intestinal, skin, periodontal, and many other preventable infections veterinarians must treat everyday with antibiotics. If we are responsibly concerned about antibiotic resistance, then we will take proactive measures to best prevent parasites and disease in the first place.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of antibiotics overused.

Always call your Vet if you have any concerns or questions

Athletic Spotlight Nick Vitulli finding his way though the Rocky Mountain air Former St. Pius X first baseman/pitcher Nick Vitulli has taken his game to a new level – literally – from about a 125 foot elevation in Houston to 5,675 feet in Golden, Colo. Vitulli, who helped lead the Panthers to the 2012 TAPPS 5A State Baseball Championship, just finished his freshman season at Colorado School of Mines, an NCAA Division II school in Golden. He’s studying petroleum engineering. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Tomball native grew up with former SPX teammate and Minnesota Twins draft pick Kohl Stewart, attending St. Anne Catholic School in Tomball. You can follow Vitulli on Twitter @Nick_V_31.

Oak Forest skateboarder looking to film documentary When Oak Forest resident Max Peterson was seven years old, he saw the new skateboard park by Watonga Park being built and knew that was something he wanted to try. Peterson, 14, won the Sam Donaldson Skateboarding Championship on April 6 at Southside Skatepark. Peterson, who graduated with honors from Hamilton Middle School earlier this spring, said he enjoys “the freedom” of skateboarding. “You can be creative with it, and you can try to make up your own tricks -- it’s challenging,” Peterson said. “It’s always for fun. I think it would be great if maybe one day I could make a career out of (skateboarding). My favorite (trick) is the 540 degree rotation with one and a half spins.” Peterson loves competing in the sport and wants to make a documentary about it. He’s hoping to travel to Camp Woodward Pennsylvania to begin filming. For more information, visit kickstartwoodward.com. – Staff Reports

What was it like winning a state title? “Pretty awesome, especially to pitch a complete game in it. I was Nick Vitulli just happy to win it. We’d been to the semifinals the last two years...to finally win it was a pretty big deal.” What was the biggest adjustment from high school to college competition? “Every hitter is pretty good. There’s not just two or three hitters you know you’re going to automatically get out. You have to be focused through the whole lineup.” When did you know your fellow Tomball native Kohl Stewart would make it big? “I figured it out when we were in the seventh or eighth grade that he was going to be pretty good. I’ve played against him and with him. I like him a lot better when he’s on my team. We were on different select teams and played together at St. Anne and St. Pius X.” Tomball won a UIL 4A Championship and SPX finished second in TAPPS 5A. What was it like to follow it? “I thought it was a pretty big accomplishment. It was Tomball’s first state championship in anything. I know it was a big deal for them. I (attended) the state title game for St. Pius X. It was upsetting, but it was still a good season.” How did you pick St. Pius X and Colorado School of Mines? “A bunch of my family went to St. Pius X, and it felt like the right place to be. Colorado School of Mines is really big engineering school, one of the best in the country. I contacted them and I visited. A few days later, they offered me a small scholarship to come play up there.” How’d you pick petroleum engineering as a major? “The job market is looking for that right now. The classes are pretty difficult, a lot harder than high school.”

Top fencers host 2 week camp in Oak Forest by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Some of the top youth fencing competitors in the world participated in a two week camp in Oak Forest. Ari Simmons, a 16-year-old from Bellaire, is the reigning Cadet Men’s Epee world champion in Croatia. He started competing in the sword fighting sport five years ago when he learned about it through a friend. Simmons has built a friendship with 16-year-old, Zsombor Branyai of Budapest, Hungary, the European champion, in the same division. Simmons won the world championship, but Branyai defeated him in practice. Both athletes hope to represent their respective countries in the Olympics someday. Branyai enjoyed participating in the camp, which was held at Lutheran High North the first week

and Alliance Fencing Academy, 4141 Directors Row in Oak Forest, last week. It was just his second time visiting the United States. “It is very good – the food, the people, the fencing and the weather,” Branyai said. About 60 percent of the fencers were from Houston, but others

came from places such as Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York and San Antonio. Alliance owner Andrey Geva is the coach of the US National Team. He’s developed 24 national champions and North American Cup winners, according to the Alliance website. Alliance, which Geva has run

since 2004, currently has 160 members. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Geva competed for the USSR from 1981 through 1989. He moved to Israel in 1990 and was the four-time Israeli national champion from 1990-93 and coached the national team from 1994-99.
