(from general surgery, orthopedic, plastic, podiatric and much more) and other special services, like their noninvasive outpatient cardiology clinic. Currently, the hospital utilizes three floors of the (Select) building. Registration and the Emergency Department are located on the first floor of the hospital. The fifth floor contains all 48 patient rooms and the sixth floor houses the operating suites, post anesthesia care unit, day surgery unit,
pharmacy, lab and the administrative offices. Parking is free and the campus is conveniently located adjacent to several physician offices housed in the Heights Medical Tower. Although most SJMCH emergency room patients experience short wait times, the hospital is proud to offer online ER-check-in, where patients experiencing non-life threatening emergencies can check-in online, 24 hours a day and wait at home until
their allotted ER appointment time. “With this convenient tool, patients can then show up to the SJMCH ER and should be seen within 15 minutes of their appointment time, Bielik adds. Exceptions will be made if another patient arrives with a life-threatening injury or illness. Appointments can be made on the hospital’s website at sjmcheights.com. See SJMCH, P. 2B

Water – we know we need it for hydration and health, but for some of us the H2O can get a little monotonous. Instead of reaching for a prepackaged flavored water, how about using nature’s bounty to flavor it yourself ? Leader readers chimed in on their favorite ways to imbue their water with a little oomph. Cucumber was a big favorite for many. Davina Jennings does cucumber, lemon, lime and mint. “I usually wash them, cut them up, put it in a big glass with some ice and water and within 15 minutes, I already taste the flavors. For maximum taste, you can leave it in a pitcher overnight, she said. “The Locals provide their share of creative only problem is the water infusions to quench that summint goes bad very mer thirst. quickly so I’m currently trying to find an alternative. Bobbi Leder adds ginger to her cucumber concoction too. Laura Olvera said that although she’s all about cucumber slices, lime and mint right now - “last summer I was obsessed with using watermelon too. Melanie Carranza still likes her water with watermelon, lime and mint. “Add to carbonated water for an extra kick, she said. Tim Louque said he read a tip on Facebook that makes good use of strawberries: “When you buy strawberries and clean them, put the tops that you cut off in a picture of water and let sit in the refrigerator overnight. Emily Zihlman said her son Cooper loves when she makes water with strawberry (10 large ones sliced), lemon (about 2 sliced), and muddled mint with honey. “I let it steep overnight in the fridge, she said. Carrie Griffin is a fan of raspberries and mint, or some cantaloupe pieces. She crushes them lightly and adds water. “I shake it up and drink immediately, adding more water as it runs low, said Griffin. “So the fruit is never removed until I finish the water and eat it. She also suggests the Young & More Fruit Infused Water Bottle, available on Amazon, for infusing water on the go. Tara Lehr adds a couple of drops of lemon oil or citrus

Eston Burciaga knows the ups and downs of being a dialysis patient better than most. As someone suffering from End Stage Renal Disease, Burciaga has been receiving dialysis treatment since 2001 and there was a time when he had lost all hope when it came to maintaining his quality of life. About a year ago, Burciaga started his own support group for those facing similar challenges, and he’s hoping his story will encourage more patients to participate. “One of the bad things about hemodialysis, especially when you start, is that when you’re sitting in a chair for four hours you want to be in your own world, Burciaga said. “Unfortunately, each of the machines have an alarm which sounds off regularly. That was hard to get used to for the first couple of months. Burciaga discovered there was also an athome dialysis treatment option, where patients would only have to receive treatment for two-and-a-half hours instead of four. The catch, however, is he would have to receive dialysis for four or five days a week as opposed to the three he was receiving at the
time. After a year of the at-home treatment, Burciaga said depression began to set in. “I started seeing a therapist and talking things through with a psychiatrist, Burciaga said. “After about a year-and-a-half I just couldn’t take it anymore. While the shorter dialysis time had seemed like a good deal at the start, after an hour or more of prep time to get the at-home machine up and running and then another hour to tear it down turned the convenience into frustration. “Another one of the negative aspects was that my partner and I had very little contact with other people while doing this, Burciaga said. “One of the benefits doing it the other way is that you see people – nurses, doctors, other patients – when you might only see others maybe once a month. Combined with unease about his condition, the isolation and the awkwardness of relying on machinery day in and day out, Burciaga fought against clinical depression for years and moved from at-home treatment to receiving dialysis at a local center before

If you frequently travel down Ashland or 19th Streets, you should know exactly where St. Joseph Medical Center in the Heights (SJMCH) is located. Since the hospital opened in the Fall of 2012, it has shared the same campus of the now closed Select Specialty Hospital. “With the closing of the Heights Select Specialty Hospital location, many community members have been wondering if our hospital would be closing our doors as well, said Jeff Bielik, SJMCH’s Administrative Director. “Let me put those thoughts to rest. St. Joseph Medical Center in the Heights is open and will remain fully operational. We are a separate entity from Select and will continue to offer a wide range of hospital services to the community. We’ve provided care for thousands of Heights area residents and plan on serving thousands more in the years ahead, adds Bielik. SJMCH is a community hospital that is equipped to handle most medical emergencies, surgeries and illnesses. In addition to a skilled and compassionate nursing team, patient care is supported by the onsite lab, as well as the dietary, diagnostic imaging, respiratory and pharmacy departments. The hospital offers a 24-hour physician-staffed Emergency Department, 48 private rooms for inpatient care, diagnostic imaging (Cat scan, ultrasound and x-ray), surgical services

Water from P. 1B fresh for a yummy addition to her water – “the oil is cold pressed from the rind.” Rhonda Power gets her ideas from Prevention Magazine. “I’ve been making some of these for our office,” said Power. “We love the Cucumber & Jalapeño (I added Cilantro to that one). I plan to try the Cherry Jubilee next.” Blogger Nancy Cockrell of nancycreative. com said that she usually drinks her flavored water the same day she makes it. “I think it tastes best that way,” she said. “Depending on what you add to your water, it may get cloudy or bitter-tasting if stored in the refrigerator too long.” Here are a few of her favorite infused water recipes. Enjoy!
2 4–inch sprigs of fresh rosemary. Lightly bruised (to release more flavor) 1 half-gallon of water Add blueberries and rosemary sprigs to a large pitcher; fill with the half-gallon of water and refrigerate 2–4 hours. Serve in ice-filled glasses. Makes about 8 servings.
CITRUS CUCUMBER WATER 1 large lemon, sliced 1 large lime, sliced 1 large orange, sliced 1 large cucumber, sliced 1 half-gallon of water Place all the sliced fruits and the cucumber in a glass pitcher and add water. Refrigerate for two hours to allow flavors to infuse, then serve in glasses over ice.
FROZEN FRUIT WATER 2 cups frozen apple chunks, grapes, or berries 1 half-gallon of water Add frozen fruit to a pitcher; pour water over fruit and let sit at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Stir to distribute fruit flavor and serve in glasses with some ice cubes. (Note: you can chop up the same kind of fruit, unfrozen, and follow same directions. You’ll need to use more ice when serving the unfrozen fruit–flavored water).
HERB AND BERRY–FLAVORED WATER 1 cup fresh blueberries, lightly crushed
LEMON–LAVENDER WATER 3 large lemons, sliced 1/4 cup fresh lavender 1 half-gallon of water Add lemon slices and lavender to pitcher; pour water over both and refrigerate for 2 hours. Serve over ice and garnish with a sprig of lavender.

SJMCH is the second location for St. Joseph Medical Center located in Downtown Houston. This year, the hospital celebrates 127 years of caring for the Houston community and a rich history of being Houston’s first hospital. Working side-by-side with St. Joseph’s CEO, Mark Bernard, Bielik is dedicated to enhancing the services offered at the Heights campus. Both campuses are supported by 800+ board certified physicians and many can be found right here in the Heights area. In the coming year, an ICU wing is slated to open, and they are in active pursuit of a Level IV trauma designation. A senior adults program called Senior Advantage is also in the works for the Heights campus. Membership is open to adults age 55 and up. The first event will be held on Wednesday, July 29 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the SJMCH Cafeteria, located on the basement level of the hospital. A complimentary breakfast will be provided along with a presentation by Pharmacy Director Joseph T. Bottecelli, MS, RPh about “Understanding Your Medications.” Reservations for this free event can be made by calling 713969-5405 by Monday, July 27. Memorial Hermann Northwest offers online resources for summer safety For The Leader

Summer may have officially started on June 21, but the Fourth of July holiday embodies what the season means for many children. Activities like swimming, biking, playing with friends, parties and fireworks often surround the holiday and are what many families look forward to. While the focus is on fun for many, it’s important for both parents and children to remember the potential dangers that come with many summertime activities. Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital David Weist, M.D., has some tips to help ensure a safe and fun summer. “It’s paramount for parents and others who are responsible for the welfare of children to learn about safety when it comes to summer activities,” Dr. Weist said. “Adults set the example for children. We must practice what we preach and that includes having fun in a safe, responsible manner.” Water Safety 36 children have drowned in Texas this year, including 15 in pools, according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates and that drowning remains the secondleading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14. For tips to keep your children safe while they splash, visit http://www.memorialhermann.org/ news/family-summer-safety--water-safety/. Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are caused by exercising or playing in a hot, humid environment where the body becomes dehydrated. This is especially common in humid regions like the Greater Houston area, where water loss and dehydration can be extremely rapid. If heat exhaustion progresses to heat stroke, it can be fatal. For tips to keep your children cool during outside, http://www.memorialhermann.org/news/ family-summer-safety--heat-exhaustion---heat-stroke/. Bike Safety In 2012, more than 270,000 children were seen in emergency rooms for injuries from riding bicycles. More bicycle accidents occur between July and September than any other time of the year and approximately 20 percent of all bicycle injuries are accounted for by children 16 and under, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For tips to protect your kids while they pedal, visit http://www.memorialhermann.org/news/ family-summer-safety--bike-safety/. Sun Safety Summer is a perfect time to soak up sunshine, but too much sun exposure can be harmful and can cause skin and eye damage, immune system suppression and even skin cancer. Follow tips here to protect your kids while they have fun in the sun: http://www.memorialhermann.org/news/ family-summer-safety--sun-safety/. Dr. Weist sees patients at the Emergency Center at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. For more information, call 713-867-2000 or visit their www.memorialhermann.org.

Support from P. 1B going back to home treatment again. However, while fighting his depression, Burciaga said one day he flipped a switch and began a road to mental recovery. “This is the rest of my life, I realized,” Burciaga said. “It’s not that great, but it’s my life and I have to accept it.” Burciaga opted to pass his time and help others by establishing the Houston Dialysis Patient Peer Support Group, which has been meeting the third Sunday of every month at Oak Christian Church at 1216 Bethlehem St., which he says fills an essential gap for many dialysis patients. “I wanted people to know this was not a support group where you talk to social workers or nurses,” Burciaga said. “I wanted this to be a safe space for dialysis patients to share things they may not want to say to staff at clinics.” Finding a location was one of the early challenges, Burciaga said. After combing through the Leader area for potential locations, he met with officials at Oak Christian Church who allowed him to use the room with a small donation to help cover electricity costs. Burciaga hopes to one day have outdoor support activities for those who can participate and doing other group exercises to help engage patients. While only a few have shown up each month, Burciaga is hoping more patients step forward. “One person I had invited was ecstatic,” Burciaga said. “She said this is exactly what people like us needed.” For more information, email estondialysis@gmail. com or call 713-252-0666.

How hot is too hot for a walk? Out of breath? Pet of the Week
Dear Tabby, With this heat, I try to walk my dog only in either the early mornings or late in the evening, but sometimes, a mid-day walk is all I can fit into my schedule. I know it’s terribly hot outside to me, but how does this heat affect my dog? Sweating in Shepherd Park Dear Sweating, I applaud your efforts to continue exercising your dog, even in hot weather. It’s tempting to get lax on dog walks when the weather is less than ideal, but by walking your dog daily, you’re giving him a great
form of exercise for both his mind and his body. Now, to answer your question: You’re wise to heed the temperature and think about how it will affect your pooch. Many folks don’t take their dog’s comfort into consideration when braving a hot day. Austin-based Pets Alive has put together a few tips for gauging your pet’s level of comfort when the weather is unbearably hot: • Dogs are 10x more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion than people so if you are super hot, your dog is hotter; • Dogs can only sweat through their mouth, feet, and ears which means they can’t dissipate heat like you, who can sweat all over (If overheated, get them wet to speed the cooling process); • Dogs need shade and water as much as possible; If a dog looks hot, react by decreasing their activity and get them to a cooler spot; • Asphalt is HOT so try walking dogs on grass instead;
• Cats can overheat too. They demonstrate being overheated by panting; • DO NOT LEAVE ANY PETS IN CARS FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME UNLESS A/C IS ON (dogs will overheat in minutes). Did you know that your pooch lagging behind on a walk is about the most important indicator that your dog is too hot on a walk? If you see this happening, seek shade, water and slow down. Just a few more months of oppressively hot dog walks and then we’ll be back to picture-perfect weather--which both you and your dog will appreciate. Did you know? BARC is now permanently going to adopt puppies at the “purrfurredâ€? price of $20 once they have been there for 10 days! This price includes complete vetting and vaccinations. Now, that’s a deal! Do you have a question for Tabby? If so, email her at deartabbyquestions@gmail.com

Neighbors: Snakes and summer time By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com Sending a special happy birthday shout out to our beautiful and lovely neighbor Traci Broyles who celebrated her special day on July 6th. She enjoyed a quiet birthday which included delicious sushi and a relaxing massage – sweet! Relaxation was most definitely in order because July 4th was an extraordinary day. This past Saturday Traci was walking to the beach at Surfside with her handsome fiancĂŠ, Rob Sreyer, headed to meet friends on the beach, when she felt something slap her leg. Traci looked down and saw a rattlesnake uncoiling and slithering away. She yelled, “Snake!â€? and leapt away – only then realizing she was bleeding and her leg was burning. She had been bitten! The couple called 911 as Traci sat in a lawn chair, trying to stay calm and awaiting the arrival of EMS. Once she arrived in the ER in Lake Jackson, Traci and Rob learned the very good news that the bite was a “dry biteâ€? and she did not need to be treated with anti-venom. The couple learned that Brazoria County no longer has anti-venom and a venomous snake bite there requires LifeFlight travel to a major medical center. Due to all the recent rain, snakes have moved to spots they might not normally occupy, so be aware. Keep in mind – do not let your children play in the sand dunes or grassy areas of the beach. The snake which bit Traci was perfectly camouflaged, even in short 4 inch grass, and blended in with the grass so well, she did not see it. Thank you for sharing your story, Traci. Your neighbors wish you and Rob all the best – congratulations on your engagement! Outstanding

Gracie Negrete, Genaro Cardenas, Yolanda Cardenas, and Marcelo Gonzalez. The tournament was held at the Coronado Springs Resort and is the largest tournament in the United States (second largest in the world) with a high level of national and international competition. Teams came to compete from South Africa, Namibia, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Jamaica, and Guatemala, just to name a few countries. Kudos to the fifteen students listed above who worked tirelessly all school year to gain the skills necessary to compete in this prestigious global tournament. Learning from the sport’s top instructors, our community’s team was able to meet and compete against students from all over the world.
Way to go, team! Kickstart Kids, established in 1990 by Chuck Norris, was launched in Houston in four public middle schools Central, Burbank, Hamilton, and Hogg. An in-school P.E. program based on martial arts, Kickstart Kids teaches responsibility and character development while providing 2 P.E. credits for participation by students. P
laque is probably the biggest cause of tooth decay and eventual loss. What is it — how do we acquire it — and how do we control it? Plaque is the sticky, practically colorless film that builds continuously on the teeth. The main inhabitants of plaque are bacteria — one milligram of plaque contains ~100 million bacteria. Bacteria ferment sugars in the mouth, a reason to avoid sweets, changing them to acids which then eat away at tooth enamel. As the plaque creeps below the gum line, it mineralizes and becomes razor-sharp deposits of tartar which is the catalyst of periodontal (or gum) disease — by far, the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Plaque must be removed daily by “proper brushing and the use of dental floss. Have your dentist or hygienist show you how to do it properly. They may recommend a “sonic toothbrush to assist in your daily hygiene regimen. Sonic toothbrushes are extremely effective in removal of plaque by providing thousands of brushstrokes over your teeth during your regular tooth brushing time, far more than can be provided with a manual toothbrush. The best way, if not the only way, to remove tartar and long-established plaque is to have a professional cleaning. But remember, it will start to reform the very next day. It is important for you to maintain good home care to help combat this ever-replicating enemy of oral health.
Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the ofďŹ ce of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

St. Pius X drill team to hold dance camp program By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Like everything else these days, operating a high school drill team can cost money. While the return for the students is outstanding – exercise, coordination, friendship, team work, admiration, and stunning dance skills – the reality of making ends meet persists. There are only so many car washes and bake sales a school can hold before enthusiasm wanes. The girls of the St. Pius X drill team had a much better idea. For four days in July, the drill team is offering to teach its thrilling dance moves to boys and girls from fourth through eighth grade at its first annual SPX Pantherette Dance Camp. Children from all over Houston are invited to learn team dancing style and technique from the high school students and their instructor, Amber Benn. Notably, all the proceeds will go to operate the drill team at
St. Pius X. “I am really looking forward to working with the kids at dance camp, said St. Pius X junior and drill team captain Jade Sanchez. “I love dancing and I love kids. I really enjoy helping young people grow in their skills and confidence. “The boys and girls who attend dance camp will learn our dance routines and techniques, Benn said. “They will get tee-shirts, there will be a dance demonstration at the end for parents, and then they will all be invited back to perform with the team at a Panther football game in the fall. It will be really fun for everyone – the drill team and the dance campers. SPX Patherette Dance Camp will be held on the St. Pius X campus at 811 W. Donovan St. and runs from July 20 through July 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The cost is $115 per child. For more information or to sign up, email benna@ stpius.org.

Stewart Tubular chose this location for our new headquarters and manufacturing facility because of its location and proximity to our customers.” Wayne Norden, President of the Near Northwest Management District met with Stewart Tubular Products President Steve Samuel and Steve Goldstein to place the “Change Champion” pennant at Stewart Tubular Products’ facility. The pennant will remain on display through early September. “Our new state-ofthe-art facility doubles our capacity and allows us to provide the best deliveries to our customers,” said Steve Samuel, President of Stewart Tubular Products. “Change Champions” are commercial property owners or businesses that are fueling the transformation of the Near Northwest Area through improvement to their property or building a new development. Given quarterly, Stewart Tubular Products’ award was announced at the District’s Business Network Breakfast held June 4, 2015. The Near Northwest Management District’s Livable Centers Study made a number of recommendations for improving the livability and values of the area. The District has seen a growth in commercial and residential values, and has attracted $100M in new development and redevelopment in the District in the last year.
