The high-technology knee surgery

Innovative Total Knee Replacement Technology at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Results in Better Outcomes During the 22 years Bart Kendrick, M.D., has been replacing arthritic knees with metal and plastic prostheses, he’s seen dramatic changes in materials and technology that mean more precise and longer-lasting artificial joints. Today, his patients are enjoying excellent outcomes thanks to an innovative artificial knee and a three-dimensional pre-surgical planning system that allows for personalized implant positioning, resulting in a quicker surgery with less blood loss and less postoperative pain. “The Biomet Signature System creates a 3-D joint reconstruction based on an MRI of the patient’s hip, knee and ankle before surgery.” said Dr. Kendrick, who performs the procedure at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, which has been recognized twice with The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for knee replacement and hip replacement surgery. “This virtual preplanning system creates a 3-D reconstruction based on measurements that correct malalignment of the knee, and creates custom thighbone and shinbone positioning guides that exactly match each patient’s anatomy, allowing for precision in implant positioning. Pre-surgical planning and custom guides improve our efficiency in performing the surgery and allow us to restore the normal alignment of the knee more accurately.” Accurate alignment of the knee improves the longevity of the knee replacement. “The history of knee replacement is a six-decade-long story of continuous innovation in an attempt to limit the problems of wear, loosening of the implant and loss of range of motion,” said Dr. Kendrick, who trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and is an assistant professor in the department of Orthopaedics at UTHealth Medical School. “Several pioneers of

In 1985, Lori Valencic moved to the Heights and she has never regretted it. “The Heights is wonderful, but we have certainly seen changes,” the resident stated with a smile. In the years that have unfolded since, this registered dietician and nutritionist has spoken to thousands of Houstonians in one-on-one settings, such as her supermarket tours, or to 100 at a time in her corporate lecture series. Valencic is at the top of her field. Today, she is a diet and nutrition consultant with the letters MEd, RD, and LD after her name, and is working from a home office in her beloved Heights. Valencic certainly knows a thing or two about eating and wellness, and was kind enough to share it with The Leader.

joint replacement were faculty members at Baylor during the time I did my training, and the orthopedic program was heavily biased toward joint replacement. They’d been doing it since the 1960s.” In the past, surgeons used twodimensional X-rays and maneuvers during surgery that allowed them to use standard guides to make cuts for implant positioning. “With traditional knee replacement, we had to insert a rod into the femur’s intermedullary canal from the knee to the hip with pins that showed us where to make cuts in the bone for replacement. The Biomet software we’re using allows us to apply the guides without having to place the rod, which means less postoperative pain for the patient.” When he started doing knee re-

placements, Dr. Kendrick told his patients they would last about 10 years, depending on weight, age, activity level and other health factors. “With today’s cobalt chromium metals and polyethylene plastics, it’s more likely that a knee replacement will last more than 20 years and even more than 30 years if it’s done correctly.” About a third of Dr. Kendrick’s cases are joint replacements. “My patient population runs the gamut, but the typical patient has severe osteoarthritis that has resulted in malaligned knees,” he said. “Occasionally, I do knee replacements on people in their 40s. Most of my patients are in their 50 and 60s, all the way up to their 80s. I do see more joint replacements in younger people because of today’s exercise and ac-

tivity patterns. When I first started practicing, we were hesitant to do total knee replacements on people in their 40s and 50s. Now that we have implants that will last 30 years and longer, younger patients are more apt to go forward with the surgery knowing that there’s less chance of needing a new replacement later. They’re all aiming to get back to an active lifestyle.” If you would like to make an appointment with a physician affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northwest to learn more about joint replacement surgery, please call 713-272-1888. “There is so much misinformation out there about dieting,” Valencic stated. “I always ask my clients, ‘Did the last diet work for you? Then why do you think this one will?’ The change must come in the form of a lifestyle change, and that takes time. “One of things we can all do is watch the portions we eat,” she continued. “Almost everything Americans eat these days has been super-sized. I recommend using a smaller plate, and raising awareness of portion size. It is a good place to start. “Americans seem to eat what is in front of them, instead of stopping when they are no longer hungry. Most people eat way beyond hunger,” Valencic stated firmly. As a professional, Valencic’s background and training is science-based and fact-based. She has seen what works, and what doesn’t, and expresses concern over fad dieting. There are no short cuts, she says.

“It’s really all about what you take in in the form of a calories,” the nutritionist continued, “and what you burn in terms of energy. Exercise does not have to be a chore. It can be as simple and pleasurable as walking more. Get a pedometer and start counting your steps in a day. “There are no quick ways to diet,” Valencic stated. “There is no way to lose 40 pounds in two months. If you really want results, enlist some experts. Hire a nutritionist to help identify your most satisfying, well-rounded diet, and hire a personal trainer to help with exercise. When a person makes these commitments, it really turns up the volume on their success. “These professionals will guide an individual to the changes in lifestyle that will insure a happy, healthy life and long-term success,” Valencic concluded with a smile. For those who may be looking for the “forty-pounds-in-two-months

flammation in the lumbar spine and pelvis. Ligamentous laxity increases the chance that the pelvis shifts out of alignment. The stabilization that a rehabilitative Pilates program provides can keep the pelvis from constantly getting out of alignment during pregnancy. Body fluid retention must be managed to improve comfort. The increase in the relaxin hormone during pregnancy also contributes to fluid retention. Pilates can train a pregnant woman to brace the spine while moving her arms and legs. People with back pain do not effectively recruit the transversus abdominus and multifidi muscles, which are imperative to stabilizing the spine. The emphasis on stabilizing the t muscles that surround the spine helps prevent a diastasis rectus

abdominus in the third trimester of pregnancy and the post partum period. If a pregnant woman already has a diastasis rectus abdominus, the Pilates approach can help train her to control the separation to manage this dysfunction. Neck pain is another common problem during pregnancy as the breasts enlarge and create more muscle imbalance between the pectorals and scapular stabilizers. Pilates focuses on engaging the scapular stabilizers. Pilates focuses on engaging the scapular stabilizers while relaxing the upper trapezius that often spasm from overuse. The focus on breath is another benefit of Pilates during pregnancy. Women are more likely to become short of breath during the third trimes-

Pregnancy & Pilates at Jennifer Klein Physical Therapy/AATB Pilates Pilates is an overall body fitness system that effectively addresses a pregnant woman’s muscle imbalances. Pilates fully integrates the body so effectively that many of its exercises carry over to movements needed in daily life. This helps pregnant women better manage spine pain and keep an old injury from flaring up. Just about any pregnant woman can benefit from a good Pilates routine with modifications based on her individual needs. It can be completely safe throughout pregnancy. Release in the relaxin hormone, causing laxity in all ligaments, is a big change that happens during pregnancy. This compromises the stability of the spine and pelvis. The excessive movement associated with this change can lead to pain and in-

ter as the fetus grows. Being mindful of inhaling and exhaling slowly and deeply using diaphragmatic breathing during all Pilates exercises heightens the benefit while improving lung capacity. After years of incorporating Pilates into physical therapy with pregnant women who have pain, it is amazing to see the number of women who eliminate pain simply by learning to effectively engage the core and scapular stabilizer muscles correctly with a solid Pilates program. Pilates gives pregnant women the control to manage pain without relying on medication. For more information, www.jenniferkleinphysicaltherapy.com www. aatbpilates.com 713-203-0787 -Submitted story

Learning the Myths of Medicare Hello Toni: Recently, I read an article online about the myths of Medicare from E-Health Insurance. I am a 65 year old engineer who retired from BP about 3 years ago. I am now working on a contract basis on various oil related projects. Can you elaborate on the Medicare myths? I have recently been diagnosed as having Parkinson’s and want to be sure I make the correct choice. I do not understand why I need to enroll in Medicare, since I have excellent company retirement health insurance. Looking forward to what you have to say...John from the Memorial area

Hi there John: Below is my response to the myths in the E-Health Insurance article: • Myth #1... A person can enroll in Medicare any time after they’re 65 without penalty... FALSE. This idea is absolutely wrong. If you are not working fulltime for a company with true group benefits and wait later than 65 years old and 90 days to enroll in Part B, then you can receive a penalty of 10% for each 12 month period or year that you did not enroll in Part B. That penalty lasts for the rest of your life.

Toni King

John, since you are not working fulltime for the company you have retirement benefits with I would advise you to enroll in both Medicare Parts A and B to keep from receiving the late enrollment Part B penalty. Toni Says: If you or your spouse are not working fulltime with true company benefits be sure to enroll in Parts A and B by the time you turn 65. Wait 90 days past turning 65 and you will get a penalty. • Myth #2: Medicare is free...FALSE. The Medicare payroll tax that you have been paying for years is for Part A only. Part B has a premium which is means tested due to income. Most on Medicare are paying $104.90 each month for Part B, but there are 10% that meet the means tested income

amount and have to pay more than $104.90 each month. If you do not pay the Part B premium, then you will not have any of the Part B benefits. Toni Says: Nothing is free. You worked and paid taxes into the Social Security system. • Myth #3: Most baby boomers think Medicare is just like regular health insurance plans...FALSE. Medicare is totally different than traditional group or individual health insurance. Medicare has two Parts A & B. Part A has a $1,216 deductible 6 times a year for an inpatient hospital stay. Medicare Part B includes doctor’s services such as office visits and doctor performing surgery, outpatient services and surgery, scans, x-rays, chemotherapy and radiation, wheel chairs, walkers and the list goes on. There is a deductible for Medicare Part B of $147.00 once a year with Medicare picking up 80% and you pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount with no co-insurance or stopping. Not like the typical 80/20 to $5,000 with a stop lost. The 20% just keeps on going!! Toni Says: Medicare is completely different than health insurance. The out of

pocket can be huge. Learn about the different Medicare plan options to pick up your out of pocket costs. • Myth #4... Medicare covers everything. FALSE. Most baby boomers are surprised to find out that Medicare does not cover long term care, routine dental care, dentures, cosmetic surgery, exams for hearing or hear aids and acupuncture. Medicare only covers what is medically necessary. Toni Says: Medicare will only pay for medical expenses and if Medicare doesn’t pay, then your Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage plan will not pay either. The next Confused about Medicare workshop is Tuesday, July 8 from 2-4 p.m. Join Toni King at her new Toni Says Houston office at 10998 S. Wilcrest Dr, Suite 120, Houston,TX 77099. Located in the Stafford, Sugar Land, and SW Houston area. RSVP 832-800-4674. Reservations are required because seating is limited to 20. Eleven of the twelve members of Girl Scout Troop 12086 graduated from high school in May. These 11 girls, some of whom had been in Scouts together for 13 years, graduated from six different high schools and will be attending at least five different colleges. It is a bittersweet time for leaders Cindy Stafford and Alice Bohlae. The graduates are Tara Givens and Sarah Stafford, both of whom have been with the troop since Kindergarten, Jackie Garcia, Whitney Workman, Emily Stengler, Amy Viña, Megan Smith, Emily Landeros, Tori O’Brian, Kayleigh Pitts and Sabrina Lopez, who achieved her Gold Award. Bohlae and Stafford started the Troop as a first grade Brownie Troop after the girls met in Joy Caka’s Daisy Troop at the Girl Scout Cottage on Wakefield. The Troop’s history is packed with campouts, service projects, homemade meals (the Troop learned to cook together in Bohlae’s kitchen), art projects, road trips, and wonderful adventures experienced together. The Troop had a final ceremony at Collina’s Italian Restaurant on 19th Street in late May, then celebrated together one last time on June 6 with dinner at Torchy’s Tacos, a trip to the Showboat DriveIn movie, followed by an overnight at Alice’s house. Finally, a troop tradition - breakfast at the Waffle House. They did set aside a small amount of troop funds for a get-together in December when everyone will be home for the holidays. One troop member, Allison Stafford, a junior at Lamar High School, will carry on the Troop number for another two years. Speaking of Alice Bohlae, our neighbor in the Garden Oaks area ... Bohlae reports that she and her granddaughter, Caitlyn Flaniken, just returned from Caitlyn’s 10-yearold trip, which is a long-time tradition in their family. They spent six days in the Denver area where they visited the Denver Zoo, Botanic Gardens (where they saw an amazing Dale Chihuly glass installation), and the Museum of Nature and Science. They toured the Mint as well as the State Capitol. The ladies spent two days in Rocky Mountain National Park where they did, in

fact, sleep on the ground one night. A wonderful adventure! Last week, recent Waltrip grads Jacqueline Olvera, Monica Galindo and Marlen Sanchez took a field trip to University of HoustonDowntown where they are enrolled for this fall. They met at the home of their senior AP Macroeconomics teacher at Waltrip, Barbara Falcon, also one of our neighbors, and took the Metro Rail to UHD where they were met by Dr. Sara Farris, a UHD writing professor, who then took them all on a tour of the campus, even allowing them to sit in on a current class. They were impressed by the ideal views of downtown Houston, great study areas, and beautiful campus, but especially by how welcoming all of the faculty and staff were to them. There are some serious KISS fans out there in The Leader area and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Anderson Properties is raffling off a rare AXE bass guitar signed by Gene Simmons of KISS along with its guitar case which is also signed, four tickets to the Aug. 31 KISS concert in Houston, and four backstage passes to a meet and greet with Gene Simmons as well as the opportunity to have him autograph four additional items for each person. Rotary International’s 34,000 clubs have a long history of addressing social issues in countries throughout the world, but you don’t have to look far to find a club that’s making a difference in the lives of at-risk children in our community. The Rotary Club of Houston Heights recently presented a $1,500 contribution to Boys & Girls Harbor, a Houston area nonprofit charitable organization providing residential care for children who are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment, or family hardship. Terry Lee Stracke, Immediate Past President for the Heights Club, presented the check to Richard Gruen, the Harbor’s Director of Development and Communications, at a weekly meeting of the Rotary club. Upon receiving the donation, Gruen commented, “The Harbor is honored to receive this wonderful donation from the Rotary Club of Houston Heights. In less than a month’s time, 2014 St. Pius X graduates Chase Fontana and Jerry Murillo went from calling Adam Massiatte their coach, to sharing a roster spot with him. Fontana, Murillo and Massiatte are members of the Houston Wildcats, a summer baseball team that competes in the 17 and over Stan Musial League. The home games are played at SPX’s Parsley Field. Fontana said playing for, and alongside, Massiatte, is similar because the coach, who graduated from SPX in 2001, often practiced with the team. The Wildcats are comprised of recent high school graduates, current college players

and guys like the 31-year-old Massiatte who still enjoys playing the game. They’re coached by Jack Schultea, an 80-year-old Reagan High graduate who played minor league baseball. Next month, Murillo, a catcher/pitcher, will take his game to McLennan Community College in Waco, while Fontana will be just down I-35 at Temple College in Temple. Massiatte began playing with the Wildcats after his freshman year at Blinn College in 2002 and said the experience prepared him for Division I baseball. He played for the University of LouisianaLafayette in 2004-05. Now, he’s gone from the role of student, to veteran

teammate. “It’s pretty cool being able to watch Jerry and Chase grow,” Massiatte said. The Wildcats regularly qualify for the Musial World Series, and the 2014 edition will be held next month in New York. “The game seems a whole lot faster, and the games are longer,” Murillo said. Fontana, an outfielder, said he’s been able to pick up some of the intricacies of the game from watching his older teammates. Murillo and Fontana were part of a successful SPX program that won a TAPPS 5A Championship during their sophomore year, finished second in 2013 and reached the state semifinals in May.

Does your pet have a ‘chip’ on its shoulder? By Molly Sue McGillicutty

I talk about the importance of getting your pet microchipped here often but perhaps you’re not even quite sure what “microchipping” really means or how it’s beneficial for your pet. Today, we’re going to discuss microchipping: what it is, what it does and why it’s important. What is a microchip? According to AVID and HomeAgain, (the biggest sellers of microchips) a microchip is a device--no bigger than a grain of rice--that carries a number that can be plugged into a database that includes the name and contact information of a pet’s owner. Think of it as a permanent, non-removable pet identification tag. If your pet were ever to become lost and end up in a pound or shelter, he would be scanned for a microchip at the shelter and the identification

number that pops up will connect you to your pet. AVID claims that its microchips help reunite as many as 1,400 pets with their owners every day and HomeAgain touts a growing total of more than 400,000 pet recoveries. How is a microchip implanted? The microchip is implanted via a syringe and the pain is comparable to a normal vaccination. The vet or technician gathers flesh between the shoulder blades of the animal, inserts the needle and pulls the retractor handle back. This simple action releases the microchip, which stays in the pet permanently.

already been microchipped at the shelter, so all you’re responsible for is updating your contact information with the microchip organization. Is it healthy and safe to implant a microchip into my pet? There is a very small body of research that suggests that microchips could cause cancer in 1% of pets who are implanted. The thing to consider is if the 1% risk is enough to risk your pet getting lost and ending up one of the 3 million lost pets who are euthanized in shelters annually because their owners can’t be located.

Ready to take action and get your pet chipped? Head over to the Boneyard Drinkery (8150 Washington Ave) on July 13 and get your pet microchipped for $20 (which includes a lifetime registration). 100% of your money will go to S.A.V.E. Rescue Coalition. Friends of BARC are the good folks behind this initiative.

Choose Me Meet Spec, a 3-year-old terrier-mix.While he’s not much larger than a speck himself, he was found dumped in the parking lot of a Spec’s liquor store and sat patiently waiting for his owner to return, to no avail. Spec is ready to find a human who won’t ever dump him again--could that be you? If so, go to www.cap4pets.org or learn more.

4905 Libbey $229,000

Can a microchip track my pet? No. There’s a common misconception that a microchip tracks your pet’s every movement and, if Fido goes missing, you’ll somehow be able to track him on your phone. While there are pet GPS trackers on the market that very well might do just that, an implanted microchip is only a passive internal identification tag that sits, inert in your pet, waiting to be read.

How much does microchipping cost? Prices vary to have your pet microchipped, but typically the cost ranges from $25 to $65, in addition to a registration fee. Not much, when you consider that a microchip could easily reunite you and your pet in the event that they’re lost. Additionally, many animals that are adopted from shelters have
