Urban winery finds spot on T.C. Jester Live Music at By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Solaro Estate Winery, which recently opened at 330 T.C. Jester Blvd. (just south of I-10), hopes to put Texas Wines on the map. “We are promoters of Texas wines – California wines started in the ‘60s, grew and had a boom,” said Robert Fritz, owner of Solaro, which makes all of its own wines. We’re working on introducing quality Texas wines to the world. All of our wines are made with Texas grapes – either from the Hill Country, or the High Plains near Lubbock.” Solaro has won more than 30 international awards for its wines, including the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Uncorked Competition, 2014 International Women’s Wine Competition, the 2014 San

Francisco Wine Competition, the 2014 Denver International Wine Competition and many more. The Estate Winery title means that wine is made from the grapes to the glass, and it never leaves. There are only a handful of them in Texas. Solaro began selling wine in 2009, and its estate location, complete with a vineyard, is in Dripping Springs, a few miles west of Austin. Since 2009, Solaro has sold 25-to-30 different wines, and they are marketed directly to high-end restaurants. They’re not found in grocery stores or liquor stores. “We make wine with an old world method – no additives,” Fritz said. “Our wine is very exclusive.” The winery is open for tastings and private events. Regular hours are 1-9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

on Friday and Saturday, and all other times by appointment by calling 832-486-7112. The Urban Winery includes two tasting rooms, two courtyards, winery offices and an area for wine storage. Fritz said opening an urban winery near Houston was the perfect fit, given the residents of the area, specifically near I-10 and T.C. Jester. “We want people from around the world to come to Houston and leave knowing Texas Wine is world class,” Fritz said. “Texans are loyal and support local products, especially if they are shown to be the best in the world.” Solaro is also an environmentally conscious winery that is self-sustainable, said Fritz. On Aug. 2, Solaro will host a “Get to Know Your Wine Event.” For more information, log on to solaroestate.com

For a complete list of finalists in every category, visit http://www.houstonculinaryawards.com/. Mangum Food Park gone? Maybe it’s just a summer hiatus but the

Mangum Food Park’s last food truck update was on June 3. Their Facebook page status is listed as “Permanently Closed” meaning that Facebook users have reported them as permanently closed. No definitive word from the owners yet. Here’s hoping they will be back in the cooler weather. Houston, we have (more) fried chicken. The Chronicle’s Alison Cook reports that food truck pioneer Josh Martinez, along with veteran foodie Paul Sedillo will open The Chicken Ranch on North Main in the Heights, in late September. The Chicken Ranch will be the first entry for the newly formed Spindle Peak restaurant group. What’s on the menu besides fried chicken? “Super bad-ass sides” in a Southern comfort style according to Sedillo. Cowboy Surfers window gets closer Lance Fegen and Lee Ellis, owners of Liberty Kitchen in the Heights, are closer to opening

the long-anticipated Cowboy Surfers at 34th and Ella in the Oak Forest area. The restaurant will begin an estimated six months of construction this week, but there is no specific date for it to open. Fegen and Ellis have stated for a long time that the restaurant’s menu would be comprised of five food groups – burgers, fried chicken, pizza, tacos and alcohol. It’s a new line up at Houston Panini & Provisions Out with the yummy, but old, in with the yummy and new for one W. 34th St. restaurant. Houston Panini & Provisions wrote on their Facebook page that starting this week, they will have a whole new line up of Paninis. Review: Gelazzi does Gelato good Recently Leader Eater was strolling down a main street in the Prospect Heights area of Brooklyn. And although this area of New York has become a trend parody of itself, there is no denying the compression of coolness, especially for an out-of-towner looking to kill time in an afternoon. Book stores, coffee shops, ethnic grocers, funky gift shops, a multitude of restaurant options, record stores and of course, an ice cream shop. I couldn’t help but think that, however not quite as dense as this area of Brooklyn, the White Oak and Studewood Crossing is starting to evolve into the same type of urban destination. (And just like New Yorkers with Brooklyn, there are Houstonians fond of griping about the area’s supposedly obnoxious gentrification.) But the Heights’ evolving food and drink district has had one thing missing: a solid ice cream shop. In the way that a coffee shop can become a community’s cultural catalyst (see Antidote) and a bar or music venue can be the cornerstone of an area’s night life (see Fitzgerald’s and Onion Creek), an ice cream shop plays its own essential role in a neighborhood’s maturation into a full-blown destination. A scoop of ice cream in a waffle cone or even in a cup is best consumed on a walk down a sidewalk - it just is. A sandwich or even a drink cannot cut it

Leader Eater enjoyed Gelazzi on White Oak Drive.

Gelazzi 3601 White Oak Drive www.gelazzi.com One scoop of gelato: $3 Two scoops of gelato: $4 Three scoops of gelato: $5 Kid Friendly: 18 flavors – all kid friendly LE’s Favorite: Italian Lemon Ice

as a sidekick for just kickin’ it in the neighborhood. And foot traffic is the lifeblood of a vibrant area. That’s what White Oak has been missing, but a new gelato (ice cream’s more sophisticated Italian cousin) joint opened up eight weeks ago that has seemingly filled it. Gelazzi is a narrow horizontal strip of a soda shop/gelato peddler/pizzeria that sits between Revival Market and Happy Fatz, the perfect location for grabbing

one of the 18 different gelatos and Italian ices that make up Gelazzi’s Technicolor case of chilled goodness and taking it to the streets. Before you even put a scoop of pistachio gelato in your mouth, you are struck by the classic character in the place from the Chicago Theater-style sign in lights to the clean design and sleek lines. But then you do try the gelato – hopefully with plenty of mini spoonfuls of samples first – and can taste the half century

of frozen craftsmanship in the Italian Lemon Ice especially, which has been touted by the place’s owner as a family recipe dating back to Chicago in the 1950s. Or the cup of Butter Pecan that Leader Eater’s ice cream slinger touted as hopefully someday rivalling Blue Bell. You’re getting there, for sure. There is a richness in Gelazzi’s gelato flavors that stops short of trying too hard (like the ice cream at a recently-open creamery in the neighborhood) and provides a smooth finish, especially from the Italian Lemon Ice. It’s also a refreshing departure from the over-styled, serve -yourself frozen yogurt establishments that have invaded Houston. And just wait until they start serving pizza-by-the-slice in a few weeks (another hollow space in the city’s culinary offerings). Even if you aren’t feeling the lick-and-stroll approach to consuming gelato, Gelazzi has a back patio – picnic tables and umbrellas and an appropriate Bocce ball court to round out its chic Old World theme. But the masterpiece of marketing and primary aesthetic draw for Gelazzi is their stunning “Welcome to Houston” mural on the east side of the building. Actually, it was exactly like the splashy mural on the side of the wall at the ice cream place I stopped by in Brooklyn... only better.

Heights resident Vaidehi “Vay” Pena is a lifelong vegetarian. But she’s also the pregnant mother of a soon-to-be daughter that she knows will someday enjoy all types of food, including those with meat. She also wants to be able to cook for her husband, who’s not a vegetarian. Pena recently decided to take cooking lessons from Ellen Schwartz, a southwest Houston woman who’s better known as “Chef Ellen” to her students. “I was looking up classes for something that might cater to me,” said Pena, who moved to the Heights last year. “I’m learning all of the basics of cooking. I want my daughter to have a well-balanced healthy diet. Chef Ellen teaches how to prepare the dishes really healthily, which I really appreciate.” Schwartz hosts classes in her home, and there are usually multiple students taking a class at one time. Pena’s schedule didn’t fit with Schwartz’s regularly scheduled classes, but Schwartz was glad to accommodate her into private lessons. “We work on cooking techniques, and what she’s taught me, it’s hard to find in books,” Pena said. “She tells me about the parts of the animal, how to cook them and how to make them taste better. In five classes, I feel like I have a full knowledge of cooking. When I go into the kitchen, I don’t have to look up recipes. I can come up with something easily.” Schwartz grew up cooking and by her early teenage years, she was preparing meals for family dinners. “I have been cooking my whole life. The kitchen was sort of my playground,” Schwartz said. “My Mom turned over all of the cooking responsibilities to me when I was 14.” Upon retiring as a school counselor from Alief ISD, Schwartz decided to turn her hobby into something more serious. Schwartz took third third place in Chicken Soup Cookoff at Temple Emanuel in Houston as the only individual (non-restraurant) in the contest.

Teenager starts Food4them to battle hunger by Adam Hoffman for the Leader

This past summer, I set out on a mission. I decided to join the front lines of the battle against hunger throughout Houston, including the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church’s Food Pantry. I knew how it was fought based on my experience of volunteering at food banks and pantries. I saw holes in the system and realized it was up to me, a member of the community, to fill them. So, at age 13, I launched a charitable organization, Food4them. Food4them was created to pick up short dated food from stores that would thrown out or not good by the time the Houston Food Bank would come to pick it up; thus salvaging and donating thousands of pounds of food that would otherwise be thrown away. In addition to serving my home town of Houston, Food4them delivers food to the needy in small towns outside of Houston that have trouble helping their poor because of their lack of resources. My project filled a niche within the food donating world. Food4them has not only changed the lives of the people it serves. After I founded it, I initiated food deliveries and projects. I invited friends, family, and neighbors to join me. These undertakings are some of the most inspiring moments. Volunteers have described to me their thrill when doing these good deeds. Recently, I brought a group of 12 year-olds from a local day camp with me to donate food. It gave them appreciation for what they have, motivation from the food pantry volunteers, and momentum to go help out their community as best they could. Food4them has created a ripple effect,

making each touched person give to somebody else. By creating its own space in the field and encouraging people to impact the world in their own way, Food4them is changing the battle against hunger. To find out more or ways to help, please visit our website at food4them.wix.com/ food4them.

If you lie down with dogs, will you wake up with fleas? The Right Agent... ...or ticks? Or allergies? Or even the plague? It’s a divisive topic: Should you allow your pets to sleep in your bed with you? According to www.vetstreet.com, (a pet-related online newsletter) 83% of Vet Street readers allow their pets to sleep with them. This begs the question: Is it a good idea to let your pet sleep in your bed or not? The disadvantages: Poor quality of sleep: A 75 pound dog, plus two adult humans in a queen-sized bed isn’t ideal, so space can become a sleep issue with large pets. Even a small dog or cat who isn’t keen on sleeping for an eight hour stretch without getting playful can disrupt your sleep patterns greatly. Risk of disease and parasites: Meningitis, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and even the plague have been transmitted to humans through dog licks, kisses and saliva, ac-

cording to the Centers for Disease Control. MRSA was contracted by a married couple after their pup repeatedly licked their faces while sleeping with them in their bed. Also, sleeping with a dog can transfer fleas that increase the risk for contracting human plague, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Be the boss in bed: Dog trainer, Cesar Millan warns against letting your dog be the boss of the bed. Millan says that, “while you may want to share your bed with your new dog, don’t do this right away.” Instead, Millan suggests establishing a neutral sleeping location for your dog and let him get used to the sleeping arrangements. If you would like your dog to join you in bed, do so by invitation only and never allow him to enter your room on his own or crawl onto the bed uninvited. Allergies: If you’re allergic to pet dander, allowing your pet to sleep in your bed can greatly escalate this problem. Contrary to popular

belief, allergies aren’t caused by your pet’s fur, but instead by proteins in his urine, saliva and flakes of skin, or dander. Dander is as small and light as dust particles, making it easily inhaled. It also clings to sheets, pillows and blankets. These all sound like serious disadvantages, so why do so many people opt to let their pets sleep with them? The advantages: Many pet owners wouldn’t dream of sleeping without their pets. The mere act of petting your companion animal before bed can be relaxing and studies show, even lower your blood pressure. Many cat owners claim that the purring of their favorite feline at bedtime is also soothing and restinducing, so I plan to maintain my coveted spot at the foot of my humans’ bed--or at least until they kick me off. World Series of Dog Shows: Plan to stop by the World Series of Dog Shows at Reliant Park, July 16-20 and see some fine canine

specimens. Many rescue groups and shelters will be represented as well, so stop by and say hi.

Waltrip athletes train for upcoming season By Michael Sudhalter

michael@theleadernews.com

Waltrip High football coach Todd Wright is preparing his time – and the rest of the school’s athletes – for the upcoming athletic season. The Rams first-year head coach is hosting weight training and speed training sessions during the week. He said about 25-to-30 athletes show up each day between 8 a.m. and noon. “I like to see every male and female athlete in the school out there,” Wright said. “We want to get the word out there about what we’re doing.” Wright arrived at Waltrip in May after working as the defensive coordinator at College Park High in The Woodlands. He succeeds the late Milton Dailey, who resigned during the spring and passed away last month at the age of 67. Wright and his staff have been helping the athletes cope with the loss of Dailey, a coach who was well-liked

and respected throughout the school. Wright retained Dailey’s staff and brought in Wayne Wheeler, who was the offensive coordinator at College Park last season. Wright expects to double as head coach and defensive coordinator. At quarterback, he said

junior Nick Hollas will likely start when the Rams open the season on Aug. 29 at Waller High. Hollas split time with then-senior Tre Johnson in the pocket last season. “Nick’s got a really good arm, and he’s a really smart kid,” Wright said. “He can read defenses and read weaknesses. Waller will be a handful. Their

kids are in the weight room every day, and they do things we’ll do as we grow into when our kids are in the weight room every day.” Spring Woods (at DelmarTusa) and Caney Creek (in Conroe) will round out the non-district schedule, and the Rams will begin 5A district competition against Madison

The Rams will host two scrimmages on campus – the first on Aug. 16 against Kashmere and Washington and the second on Aug. 22 against Beaumont Central. “We hope to have a good crowd, ice cream and some food for a good family atmosphere,” Wright said.

High in September. “I’m sure they’ll have an advantage with numbers, because they’re used to playing bigger and stronger teams,” Wright said. Before the regular season kicks off, Wright said players must turn in their physicals before two-a-day practices begin on Aug. 4.

St. Pius X finishes 2-2 at State 7-on-7 Tournament

Section Champions

By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

The Lindale Little League 9-10 year old softball team won the District 25 Championship last month and followed that up with a section title last week. They’ll compete in the state tournament this weekend. The players are Virginia Garcia,Angelina Garcia, Mary Medina, Sophia Rodriguez, Celine Deleon, Aerial Garza, Ava Martinez, Alicia Mecedo, Sara Peyrani, Jessica Smith and Gracelynn Alvarez (not pictured). The manager is Armando Peyrani and coaches are Rick Rodriguez, Joe Martinez and Andrew Morris. The league president is Vincente Valdez and the league vice president is Octavio Pena. (Submitted photo)

St. Pius X football players, coaches and fans got a chance to see Clay Roberts in his first competitive situation as a Panther. And SPX first-year head coach Stephen Hill was thoroughly impressed with the Manvel transfer at the Division II State 7-on-7 Tournament last week in College Station. “He turned a lot of heads,” Hill said of the junior signal caller who threw 15 touchdown passes in four games last week. “He’s just got a good grasp of the offense and always puts us in position to make a play.” Pius played in one of the toughest pools in the state tournament. They defeated Prairiland, 40-13, before winning a hard-fought game against La Grange, 42-35, to punch their ticket into the championship bracket. Graham, the eventual tour-

nament champion, defeated the Panthers, 53-6, in the final game of pool play. In the first game of the championship bracket, Palmer – from the Dallas-Fort Worth area – edged the Panthers, 3226. Hill was impressed with senior wide receiver Darius Law and junior wide receiver Nick

Minkoff. Senior running back Micah Massey showed that he’s more than capable of catching passes out of the backfield. Defensively, Hill said senior Jalen Smith – who had three interceptions – and junior linebacker Terrell Franklin were impressive.

BASTIAN, from P. 1A thing possible to work with Bastian and have even approved two of the three homes he wants to build on the 22,000-square-foot area. “We have met with Michael no less than five times, and we have been very clear, from the beginning, about what is acceptable,” WallaceBrown said. “The problem is that he wants to build something that is bigger, wider and taller than anything typical in the district.” According to Wallace-Brown, the dimensions of the house that cannot be approved are far beyond any other historic home in the area. “He wants a ridge height that is 38 feet,” she said. “The tallest in the district is 36 feet. He wants a house that is 49 feet wide. The next closest in the district is 40 feet wide, and most of them are 36, 35 and 34 feet wide.” The historic story The Leader has published a number of stories about the HAHC, a group of 13 appointed members who are tasked with enforcing the city’s Historic Preservation Ordinance, which was passed in 2010. According to Wallace-Brown, the commission has been largely successful. In her latest figures, she says HAHC approved 84 percent of all projects brought before the group in 2013. Of course, those numbers include applications in every historic district in the city of Houston. It does not break out the number of deferrals and denials in the three historic districts of the Heights. At issue in the Heights is the lack of design guidelines for those seeking to build homes. Every historic district in the city has a definitive set of guidelines. Builders know exactly what they can and cannot do to a home, unless that home is in the Heights. Instead, when a home in the historic districts of the Heights is brought before the commission, owners are left at the complete, subjective mercy of the HAHC members. And while there are 13 members of HAHC, there are only four who usually speak at meetings. Three of those four seemingly enjoy deferring or denying Certificates of Appropriateness to people who want to construct or remodel homes in this area. Wallace-Brown says the city’s Planning Department is available to work with every owner seeking to make a change or build in the Heights. Bastian would contend that no matter what you try to accomplish with the Planning Department and HAHC, criteria can change overnight and it’s difficult to get a straight answer. The size issue Bastian is a homebuilder. He’s also

a businessman. When he bought the property in the Heights West historic district, he wanted to build nice homes and he wanted to make a profit on them. Even though he has two of his three home plans approved, he has invested “close to $80,000” on the project beyond the nearly $2 million he paid for the lots. Earlier this week, he sent an email to friends and supporters of his project to let them know that he couldn’t handle working with the city and HAHC any longer. “The 16 months of dealing with bureaucrats that really want NO new construction despite their vehement denial of that has taken its toll on me emotionally and financially,” Bastian wrote. “We have two houses ‘approved’ by the Houston Archaeological and Hysterical Committee on the Rutland side. The level of compromise REQUIRED by HAHC made them unidentifiable from the original plans. When you are in the heat of the battle, you give a little, but when you step back and look at what was ‘approved,’ you recoil in disgust.” As for the large home Bastian wants to build, he said it will never be approved. “[HAHC says] that a big house is OK as long as it isn’t bigger than the typical contributing house in the district,” he wrote. “In other words, it can be big as long as it is small. They wanted a 25-foot setback even though the City setback is 10 feet AND the average setback of ALL corner contributing houses in the West Historic District is 11 feet.” Wallace-Brown understands Bastian’s frustration, but she said she and her department are working within the boundaries of the Historic Preservation Ordinance. “We felt it was too massive and too large,” she said. “We gave him the typical dimensions, and the last we heard from him, he was going to go back to work on it.” What happens next While Bastian holds out a glimmer of hope that something can be resolved, he has begun the process of looking for buyers of the lots. He said he’s had interest from two developers who would consider putting multi-family dwellings on the lots. In his letter to supporters, he said at least one of those companies has reached out to the Planning Department to get information on building apartments there. Wallace-Brown said she had been contacted by one real estate company but had not heard about apartments yet. “Even if somebody wants to build apartments, they’re going to have to go through the same process,” she said. “Any new structure in the his-

toric district has to go through the same approval that Michael has.” Bastian said he wouldn’t hold a fire-sale on the property, but he doesn’t believe he can continue the project he set out to complete. “Yes, I have two of the plans approved, but they look like [expletive],” he said. “The architectural integrity of the project has been completely compromised.” Bastian said part of the problem is the staff at the Planning Department. “The younger people [on the Planning Department staff] don’t know what they’re doing,” he said. “They don’t understand that you can’t sell a house that has an odd-looking outside... They don’t understand that the pitch of the roof is important to the structure of the house. There’s functionality to a house that nobody up there talks about.” Some upset neighbors Bastian isn’t the only one mad that the homes are not going to be built. Katie Pearson and her husband, Adam, bought a home next to the former poultry plant and were excited about the plans they saw from Bastian. “Our Realtor emailed them to us, and they were gorgeous, beautiful homes,” Katie Pearson said. “They would have been a tremendous addition to our neighborhood.” Pearson said there are several new houses in the area that were nearly the same size as the proposed house Bastian wanted to build on the corner lot. “I just don’t understand it,” she said. The homes Pearson mentioned were built before the Historic Preservation Ordinance of 2010, and another neighbor, Randy Johnson knows all about them. He lives in one that was built in 2006. “I foolishly signed the petition to create the Heights West Historic District because I knew the chicken plant would eventually get torn down, and I feared that the new construction would not match the residential character of the neighborhood,” Johnson said. “My neighbors and I universally supported Mr. Bastian’s Rutland plans back in March 2014. The changes that were being mandated by HAHC we capricious and nit-picky.” Johnson blames the city and those charged with leading responsible development in neighborhoods like the Heights. “The city Planning Department and Councilwoman Ellen Cohen appear to lack the willpower or ability to reform the HAHC,” he said. “There is a total lack of leadership by City Council. Nobody is willing to reign in the HAHC.”
