A new type of treatment at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights may provide some much needed relief for those who suffer from severe asthma. In a press release, Dr. Jose Melendez, a pulmonary and critical care specialist affiliated with MHGH explains that the treatment uses mild heat to “reduce the amount of excess smooth muscle in the airways.” The treatment, called bronchial thermoplasty, is being offered currently at MHGH and is unique in that it is a non-drug treatment. Saima Mosso, a pulmonary territory manager with Boston Scientific (the group that engineered the equipment used in the procedure) said the treatment involves placing patients under light sedation with a specialist guiding a long tube through the patient’s mouth and into each airway. A thermoplasty device is then inserted in the tube and an array of electrodes are heated as they make contact with the airway walls. This shrinks the muscles and

Heights-area man honored as ‘Community Champion’ For The Leader Molina Healthcare of Texas recently celebrated the good deeds of three community heroes at its second annual Community Champions Awards. One of this year’s winners included Jarrett Hubert of Houston. Jarrett Hubert has completed four Ironmans, 10 Half Ironmans and nearly a dozen marathons. But to Hubert, one of the most rewarding moments in his life was guiding Andy Granda to become the first deaf and blind man to finish an Ironman race. For the past five years, Hubert has been traveling around the country to serve as a guide for marathoners and triathletes with vision and hearing impairments. As an accomplished endurance athlete himself, Hubert is led by a desire to make competing in these challenging physical events possible for those who could not do them alone. Last year, Hubert helped to plan and facilitate a cross country race, the Houston XC Championships, that raised more than $4,000 to
benefit the Brookwood Community. In addition to fundraising, the event has helped raise awareness and has drawn the attention of the Houston Marathon with whom Hubert is working to establish a visually impaired division. Hubert has established his own non-profit, CATAPULT, that gives athletes with disabilities access to training and assistance with fundraising. The organization also provides assistance for guides. What started as a passion for endurance sports has now developed into a mission to give something that many take for granted, the ability to run a race, to all. “Jarrett has made a positive difference in Houston and beyond through his hard work, dedication and selflessness,” said Anne Rote, president of Molina Healthcare of Texas. “It is our distinct honor to recognize Jarrett for his contributions to improve the lives of others, in addition to inspiring others to follow his example.” The Community Champions program celebrates the vision of Dr. C.

It’s art & exercise, can you Parkour? Maybe you’ve seen the cool videos of Parkour online or in the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale. Or maybe you’ve heard about it from a friend. I did, and was curious to learn more so I recently took a class at Urban Movement in the Heights. Because I’m not sure I can describe it accurately, I’m going to rely on Wikipedia which says parkour is “a training discipline using movement that developed from military obstacle course training. Practitioners aim to get from one point to another in a complex environment, without assistive equipment and in the fastest and most efficient way possible. Parkour includes running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, rolling, quadrupedal movement, and other movements as deemed most suit-

Get a game plan for prostate health Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader Since June is National Men’s Health Month, men need to formulate a game plan for prostate health and schedule a prostate screening. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. If detected early, it can be treated. When it is, the 10-year survival rate is 98 percent. Urination Problems Need Doctor’s Care The prostate is a walnutshaped gland that sits under a man’s bladder and in front of his rectum. Because the prostate surrounds the urethra – the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body – it can affect urination when it is enlarged, infected or cancerous. Men with urination problems such as urgency, reduced flow, frequency or burning should talk with their physician. The most common
prostate problems, other than cancer, are infections of the prostate and benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, which is an enlarged, non-cancerous prostate. A Silent Cancer Richard Kim, M.D., a urologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, calls prostate cancer a silent cancer because there are no outward symptoms in the early stages. In the advanced stages, a man might have blood in his urine or semen, painful ejaculation or pain in his back, hips, pelvis or upper thighs. Prostate cancer is rare before age 40, but the risk grows with age. More than half of 90-year-old men have prostate cancer. “If men live long enough, they’ll get prostate cancer,” said Dr. Kim. “To make health decisions, they must have regular prostate screenings.” These screenings include
a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves a physician inserting a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the prostate for abnormalities, and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Dr. Kim recommends screenings begin at age 50 for men who are at average risk of prostate cancer and expect to live at least 10 more years. For African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer, screenings should begin at age 40. “After age 50, men must be extra vigilant about checking PSA levels if they’re taking testosterone replacement therapy,” adds Dr. Kim. “Prostate cancer feeds off testosterone, so t-therapy is like adding gas to a fire.” Don’t Put Off Screening Prostate cancer is generally very slow growing, so Dr. Kim
“Three years ago I saw a Groupon and thought ‘This seemed different’,” he said. “I took one class and I was hooked.” Pratto stayed too to work with the kids. He said that he and Hamner each teach one or two classes a week, but come to the classes more often to serve as “master minders” of their 10 or so staff. I met a 9-year-old girl named Tai who was taking her first class. She said she liked jumping and saw a 10-year old doing some cool moves on the computer. Pratto acknowledges the flashy things that people see on online leave them with a bit of disappointment sometimes that they don’t start with the big stuff. Trust me, that’s a good thing. Tai was in luck because the special focus of the Sunday class was jumping, but first there was a warm up. After the group did some stretches, an inverted crawl and other things to get limber, the jumping commenced. Both coaches continued to stress that it wasn’t the distance that was important but sticking the landing. And that meant coming down quietly on the balls of your feet. The group started jumping on level ground and then over a pole before graduating to jumping up onto a pre-marked square on an elevated bench. At the end of class, the kids got to navigate through an obstacle course on their own as a reward for good behavior. “We gradually try and introduce elements of danger,” said Pratto of the skill building classes. “It’s all about overcoming fear and parents notice that their children also take that into other areas of their lives.” He said at one time they offered classes to five year olds, but the attention span wasn’t there yet for most of them. Although kids 6-12 take classes together, they are separated by ability within the class. Likewise, they used to do a class for 13-17 year olds but now just do 13 and up.
Which brings me to my 44year old self. I was the oldest person in my particular class by 30 years but Pratto said they do regularly get students in their 50s. I was also the only woman but this was an anomaly too, according to Pratto who says most classes are about 40 to 50 percent female. During my class, I did most of the things as the kids did. It looked a whole lot easier as a spectator. The warm up was enough to leave me totally winded – the inverted crawl is my nemesis – and there was to be no sitting if by some miracle I had finished first. Buchanek said it was a solidarity thing to wait in an active pose until everyone went and got water together. Did I mention it was incredibly hard? But good hard. Muscles sore two days later hard. And I felt pride in finally sticking my landing. I had asked Pratto before we started about the number of calories someone would typically burn, and he said they didn’t keep track that way. No worries. I felt sure I’d had a more than adequate work out. The classes are getting more popular and Hamner said they are on the lookout for a new, Urban Movement dedicated facility. “The kids’ classes on Sunday tend to be smaller, but our classes during the week regularly have at or near 20 kids, and thus necessitate more space and growth,” he said. “In the long term it would be nice for us to have multiple locations, as we have had requests from as disparate locations as Katy and the Woodlands. The dedicated gym is the first step though. Another area of growth we are actively pursuing is working directly with the local schools to teach on site.” Want to check it out yourself ? There’s a Groupon available for a month’s worth of unlimited classes. For more information on class times and locations, visit www.urbanmovement.com

Parkour from P. 1B able for the situation.” Raymond Belle started parkour in France, and it was refined by his son David and a group of friends, who call themselves the Yamakasi, during the late 1980s. Inwood Forest’s Wes Hamner started Urban Movement with partner Cameron Pratto in 2011. Hamner began training on his own about six years ago and Pratto started in 2008. “There was an existing parkour community in Houston, and we saw a need for a more formal organization,” said Hamner. “In part to better direct instruction, and in part to have a better way to develop things like our gym. It also developed as a way to facilitate workshops with the founders of the art and other world renowned coaches.” Pratto said they periodically fly the Yamakasi founders in from France. “It’s a rich history, and we have a great relationship,” he said. The indoor classes and open gym in Houston are at Studio Fitness, a 20,000 square foot Heights gym at 23rd and Lawrence. Their outdoor classes are at Tranquility Park and Discovery Green, and in South Houston at Tom Bass Park. Classes are for ages six to 50+. Pratto notes that the Yamakasi call what they do “l’art du déplacement”, which although it encompasses parkour is less about the hard discipline and more about the aesthetics and fluidity of the movement. There is also a related branch called MovNat described on Urban Movement’s website as “a fitness and physical education system based on the full range of natural human movement skills.” Unlike Parkour, there is a certification available in MovNat. On Sunday before my class, I watched Mike Buchanek, an instructional specialist at Waltrip High School, lead a class of 6-12 year olds. He’s in his third year at Urban Movement.

Preventing asthma attacks they can leave fur and dander behind. Limit the rooms in which pets can stay. There is some research that states children exposed to animals early in life may actually be less likely to develop allergies and asthma. · Put allergy-proof covers on pillows. · Vacuum at least twice a week with a HEPA air filter-enhanced vacuum cleaner. · Reduce humidity around the house, as it can lead to the prevalence of mold. Mold is a common asthma trigger. That means using a dehumidifier, keeping bathrooms clean and dry and repairing any leaks promptly. · Insist that people who smoke tobacco products do so outside of the house. Secondhand smoke has been shown to increase the development of asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
For The Leader Millions of people - 25.9 million in the United States alone - have asthma, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Asthma has become increasingly prevalent in all sex, age and racial groups since the early 1980s. It is one of the most common and costly diseases, and still has no cure. Swelling of the airways occurs when a person has asthma. This can result in wheezing, coughing and tightness in the chest. For those who cannot find relief, asthma attacks can prove deadly. Although there is no way to prevent asthma, by following a plan, there are ways to lessen the frequency and severity of attacks. Most of these tips involve reducing contact with allergens that can trigger asthma attacks. Home First, assess your house to identify and reduce common allergens. · Wash linens and clothing in hot water to kill off any dust mites. The water temperature should be at least 130 F. · If pets trigger a reaction, keep companion animals off of furniture and beds where
Outside, work and school You may have less control over allergens outside of the home, but there are still ways to cut down on attacks. · Avoid smoking areas outside of stores and office buildings.
· Know the office cleaning schedule and work around those hours. In some instances, cleaning products and other chemicals can trigger attacks. · Keep stress at a minimum because intense emotions can bring on asthma symptoms, according to Paul Ehrlich, M.D., coauthor of “Asthma Allergies Children: A Parent’s Guide.” · Check the air quality outdoors before venturing outside. Stay inside during ozone alerts or when the air is very humid or stagnant. · Seasonal allergies and asthma often go hand-in-hand. Check pollen, mold and ragweed counts. Stay indoors on peak days. · Be sure physical education teachers are aware that gym class may trigger asthma attacks in your children, and that they should look for apparent symptoms.

Prostate from P. 1B develops game plans with his patients regarding the frequency of screenings and if cancer is detected, treatment options. Often, active surveillance may be the best option, but this requires the findings from a baseline prostate screening. Dr. Kim recently saw a 71-year-old man with leg pain. After an examination and the patient’s first-ever PSA test, he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. It had spread to his spine and made walking difficult. Early screenings could have detected the cancer. “Combining the PSA and DRE gives us direction on which patients to biopsy and which to watch,” said Dr. Kim. “The PSA test can produce elevated numbers for bike and motorcycle riders and men with an enlarged or infected prostate. That’s why I look at how fast the PSA levels rise, consider life expectancy and discuss with my patients the pros and cons of testing and treatment versus active surveillance.” To schedule a prostate screening, visit memorialhermann. org/schedulenow or call 713.222.CARE (2273).
Asthma from P. 1B creates a larger airway, Mosso said. In the press release, Melendez said less muscle tissue means less airway constriction during an asthma attack, lessening the chance of one happening at all. “It’s a one-time treatment and it’s actually an outpatient procedure,” Mosso said. “We can usually have people in by 8 or 9 and out by noon.” Those suffering from severe asthma and taking medication for it are all eligible for the procedure. Prior to the treatment, breathing tests will be completed to ensure the patient is fully eligible, although Mosso said those with an implantable device like a pacemaker or those unable to undergo moderate sedation won’t be able to undergo bronchial thermoplasty.
Mosso said the treatment is done in three sessions across approximately six to nine weeks. The results, according to a study funded by Boston Scientific, shows that it reduces severe asthma attacks and improves asthma control but notes that it does not cure asthma or replace current medications. In choosing to partner with MHGH, Mosso said they are looking to help a large population of asthmatics in the area. “Some people are being prescribed larger doses of medication for their conditions when they can opt for this treatment to truly improve their quality of life,” Mosso said. For more information, visit www.memorialhermann.org/ heights or call 713-222-CARE (2273).

Mathew now has an opportunity to qualify for the national finals that will be held in San Diego on the week of the AllStar Game. If Mathew qualifies, he will shag balls and be recognized during the Home Run Derby at Petco park with their families in attendance. According to a press release, over the next four weeks there will be a PHR team championship at every Major League ballpark. The first-place winners at each venue will be
ranked from 1-30 in scoring, with the top three in each division age group advancing for the national finals in San Diego, the day before the July 12 All-Star Game at Petco Park. The press release says three participants in each group on Sunday were from either TX, Louisiana or Mississippi -- the areas that constitute the Astros’ market. Softball participants threw from 35 feet, and the baseball participants threw from 45 feet at a strike zone target. They had six attempts, and each strike was worth 75 points, according to the press release. In the running competition, competitors started at second base, rounded third and finished at home plate. Points are based on a conversion table with all three events weighed equally. The age group winners on Sunday at Minute Maid Park also include: 7-8 softball, Kayden Whotte, DeQuincy,
Mathew Manis
LA.; 9-10 softball, Alissa Sneed, Conroe, TX; 11-12 softball, Andreya Castaneda, Leander, TX; 13-14 softball, Hopie Mitchell, Orange Grove, TX; 9-10 baseball, Marek Fleming, Tomball, TX; 11-12 baseball, Paul Smith Jr. Houston; 13-14 baseball, Caelen Ball, Dripping Springs, TX.
Pena ponys up to all boys team By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com When Nellie Pena started playing coach pitch as a 6-year old in the Candlelight League, she was not the only girl on the team. But she is now. This spring, Pena played on an Oaks Dads’ Club Pony league team which is made up of kids 13 to 15 years old. The Clifton seventh grader also wrapped up her first season on Clifton Middle School’s baseball team where she was named a team MVP. Oaks Dads’ Club president Sean Jez said that Pena is the first girl in over 10 years that he can remember playing on a Pony team. “Our number one priority is that kids have a good time and that no one gets hurt,” said Jez. “[Pena] went through tryouts and she was a great ballplayer. We hope she’ll continue.” Jeremy Joseph who coached Nellie for two

Pena from P. 5B years during kid pitch in the spring of 2014 and 2015 had never seen her play before her tryout in February of 2014. “Upon seeing Nellie at tryouts you could tell that she was talented,” he said. “She needed help in refining her talents as most kids there did, but the way she played ground balls was something I thought would be beneficial to my team. As we began to work with her more and more it was clear that she could be a good baseball player for us as long as she was confident in her abilities.” Pena was and made the allstar team under Joseph. Her mother Margarita Duran said her youngest daughter has always been athletic and is also on the track and cross country team at Clifton. She said it does scare her that Pena has chosen baseball as a sport because of the speed of the game and the constant vigilance that’s required, but she has confidence in her daughter’s ability after all these years of watching games. As for Pena, she says she’s still “nervous every time” but loves to play ball. “When I first started it was boys and girls, and I just liked being outside,” said Pena, who said now she really likes the
team aspect of the sport. She said that her favorite infield position is second base. “I feel like I’m more adjustable,” she said. Of her tryouts for the Clifton team last year, Pena said there was some initial “weirdness” because some of the boys felt like she wasn’t “qualified enough.” That only lasted through the first couple of games. “They noticed I was good,” said Pena. Of her Pony Astros team, Pena said she feels nothing but support. “They’re my friends,” she said. “They knew I could do it.” As for her future, Pena thinks she might want to play high school ball. Jeremy Joseph thinks that is not an unreasonable expectation. “Nellie works hard and that shouldn’t be understated in a game like baseball,” he said. “In a game where the best pros only get a hit about 1/3 of the time, hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. I told Nellie last year that she should possibly look into playing softball, but here she is playing in Pony. At this point she’s proven me wrong once, I think I’d be a fool to bet against her twice.”

Waltrip to host girls soccer camp By Jonathan Valadez jvaladez@theleadernews.com The Waltrip Lady Rams varsity soccer team will host its secondannual summer camp at Waltrip High School from 8:30-11 a.m. on June 17-18. The event is open to all incoming seventh-10th grade girls, regardless of which school the student is currently attending. The camp, which is broken down into two parts, will allow participants to practice and hone their skills through various drills on the first day before competing in several competitions on the second day. Adam Ramirez, who is the varsity girls’ soccer coach, is the director of the camp and will be joined by Assistant Coach Brittany Bobbitt. Varsity soccer players from Waltrip and Reagan High School will also be in attendance and will serve as mentors to the younger athletes, according to Ramirez. Ramirez is going into his fifth year as head coach, and he hopes that this summer program will spark more interest within the community and also result in a higher level of play among high school teams. Registration for the event is $10 for one day or $15 for both days and all proceeds from the event benefit the Waltrip Lady Rams socContributed Photo The Waltrip Lady Rams are gearing up for yet another summer camp for seventh to 10th graders. cer team.
