Principal’s Welcome

I am delighted to introduce Burgmann Anglican School’s 2024 musical ‘You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown’. Based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Shulz, the original book, music and lyrics for this musical were written by Clark Gesner back in 1967. The show was later revised and updated in 1999, with new dialogue by Michael Mayer and new music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa.

Just as Burgmann recently turned 25, this revised musical celebrates its 25th birthday this year. This is a heartwarming show for all ages, full to the brim of quotable words of wisdom, very fitting for our Burgmann theme for 2024. As you enjoy the production, I hope you are reminded that happiness does not require great expense, adventure or sense of occasion; rather,

it can be found in the simplest of everyday things.

Such a significant event requires commitment, passion and endless energy from our staff, the cast and crew and of course our parents, who support and encourage our students to engage with such a wonderful activity.

I would like to acknowledge the creativity, vision and leadership of my wonderful staff, and particularly recognise and thank Mrs Nicole Nunan, Mrs Anne Spence and Ms Heather Winter. They have given so much of their time, care and energy to this production and have also been supported by many fabulous staff, instrumental tutors, and current and former students and parents, in

various capacities.

The production is certainly testament to the community spirit at Burgmann and it is heart-warming to see the utter enjoyment of the students in the cast, band, and production crew as this show comes to life.

Our talented students have worked tirelessly this year on honing their singing, acting and dance skills, on set and prop construction in our Year 8 Above and Beyond class, and in student leadership in contributions to choreography, rehearsals and promotion of the event. I wish everyone in the production every success as their combined efforts come together in the performances.

Behind the Scenes

‘What’s the musical next year?’ I asked in about April 2023. ‘What’s the musical next year?’ I asked in May 2023. And so, I persisted. I heard rumours. ‘It’s really cute’. ‘Hasn’t been seen in Canberra for a long time’. ‘Opportunities for lots of students to show their skills’. ‘Every age will love coming to see this show’. The suspense built. And finally, the announcement: ‘You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown’. I’d never heard of it. I knew the comic strip. Indeed, Snoopy had been a fixture in our house for years. But not the musical. I quickly went to the source of all good information – YouTube. And there it was. A light, humorous, heartfelt musical that was so fitting for Burgmann to perform. And so, it began.

Auditions were held. Who could hit the high notes? Who could be in their teens and have to act like a tween? There was competition as

the talented actors and musicians in our community vied for the roles. Decisions were tough and it was decided that we would cast two Lucy’s and two Sally’s to give opportunities for more lead performers. Fast forward to Semester 1 2024.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday we had over 75 students come to rehearse.

The band in PA1 learning a very tricky score. Mrs Nunan desperately evolving the score, working with the assistance of our talented music tutors to enhance what was already beautiful music. The leads quickly realised the scope of their roles – the need to sing, dance and act a wide range of pieces. The cast was divided into teams – the Kite Kids, the Snoopy groupies, the Blankies. Special talents were identified like the ability to roller skate. The backstage crew started researching and sourcing the costumes, the props and learning

when to move the bench (again!). In Middle School, the Above and Beyond class was constructing the set – can the kennel be strong enough to stand on? And then the front of house – the program, the marketing, the photos and all that goes into the production.

Over 150 hours of rehearsals completed all while keeping up with the rest of life. The dedication of the staff and the students is testimony to the commitment they have to their passion to perform. It has been hard work, but a joy to be involved with assisting in this production. Happiness is…. being part of a school musical.

And so, we present ‘You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown’.
