The business of helping people

• We don’t need to advertise for clients.

• Our funders are not our clients.

• Unlike many philanthropy-funded revenue models, it is nearly impossible for us to cultivate “alumni” who can give back.

• As a faith-based nonprofit, many donors assume we are fully funded by the Church.

The business of helping cont’d

• To grow the business at the scale at which we operate, your best revenue option is state social services grants.

• Federal social service programs are designed to give block grants to states, who then parcel out funding to community-based organizations.

• If your customers return for more services, you haven’t done a very good job.

• Anti-poverty

The Catholic Charities Story

• Diversity of ministries

• 160 agencies across the country

• Service to people in need

• Advocate for justice in social structures

• Call the entire church and other people of good will to do the same.

Deus Caritas Est (God is Love)

Encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI (2005)

The Church’s deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility of:

• proclaiming the word of God (kerygma martyria),

• celebrating the sacraments (leitourgia), and

• exercising the ministry of charity (diakonia)

More from Pope Benedict

God is Love Encyclical letter (2005)

“Church agencies, with their transparent operation and their faithfulness to the duty of witnessing to love, are able to give a Christian quality to the civil agencies.”

Job Training

Sewing/Tailoring

Christiana owns Threads by Dreads, a company that has its roots in her Ghanaian heritage. She is a secondgeneration American, and because of her full-time job schedule, she needed a non-degree based program to gain skills to start her own home-based business.

Job Training

Bilingual Banking

Many new Americans have solid job skills and work experience but their credentials do not transfer to the U.S. This Bank of America-funded training program provides a professional career path for those who are bilingual.

Job Training

Culinary Arts/Food

Service

Nashville’s famous tourism and hospitality industry opens doors for many, if they have the right skills.

Catholic Charities’ culinary training program taps neighbors who are eager to learn the trade, get their foot in the door, and start building a career.

Job Training

Trades

The demand for apprentice level workers in the booming Nashville construction industry makes our entry level training programs attractive to partners such as The Lee Company, Nashville State, and Tennessee College of Applied Technology.
