This digital catalogue received the 2023 Award for Excellence from the Association of Art Museum Curators in the category of Digital Publication. It combines the latest discoveries made by art historians, conservators, and scientists about paintings in the Clowes Collection.
Registered in Switzerland, the Fondation Custodia was established in Paris by the Dutch collectors Frits Lugt and To Klever-Lugt for the purpose of managing their collection of drawings, prints, paintings, and artists’ letters. The Frits Lugt Collection is a study collection and is accessible to art historians and other interested parties. The Fondation Custodia also promotes scienti c research and publications and shares its collections with the public by making them available digitally and by organising exhibitions. Many of these shows are realized with other art institutions and museums.
The Fondation Custodia continues to expand its collection and actively participates through loans in international exhibitions. Its art historical library is open to the public.

Who are we looking for?
You are a graduate art historian specialized in drawings and prints. You have experience and contacts with international museums and print rooms. Experience in the organization of exhibitions, the international art market and the building of a collection is a prerequisite, as are writing skills, preferably evidenced by both scholarly and educationally oriented publications.
The new director has gained managerial experience in one or more similar positions. A network in the Netherlands, particularly in the museums and the universities, is highly desirable, as is knowledge of the art world in France and French culture. The director of the Fondation Custodia has an independent position with nancial resources to pursue an active acquisition policy, receives an appropriate salary and has access to a spacious o cial residence in the centre of Paris. The Fondation Custodia has a professional and committed sta .
The future
In concert with the Board, the new Director will determine the course of action for the Fondation Custodia. Important themes will be the organisation’s further professionalization, the use and adaptation of the spaces at the Foundation’s disposal, policies concerning acquisitions and exhibitions, and the digital retrieval of the collection.

Editor
The Burlington Magazine is the world’s leading monthly publication devoted to the fine and decorative arts. It publishes concise, well-written articles based on original research, presenting new works, art-historical discoveries and fresh interpretations.
Our Editor since 2017, Michael Hall, will retire from The Burlington this year. We invite applications for a successor.
The Editor is responsible for the overseeing the entire editorial content of the magazine and its sister digital publication Burlington Contemporary. This includes oversight of all editorial activity, including managing editorial staff, budgets and external contributors. The Editor is also responsible for engaging with the art historical, museum, and art dealer communities in developing and enhancing relations to the benefit of the Burlington.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the integrity and academic standards of the editorial content, including selecting, commissioning and editing articles for the Magazine with the assistance of an experienced editorial team. They will have a bachelor’s degree, and an advanced degree in art history, literature, or a related field is desirable. A high professional standing in a scholarly press, museum, university or equivalent environment is required. The candidate will also have a tested understanding of the editorial process and be able to work to tight deadlines. They will have proven leadership and management skills, and the ability to create a positive and productive team environment. The candidate should be able to collaborate effectively with a wide range of colleagues and contacts, both external and internal, and will possess excellent communication skills.
This Editor attends Burlington Magazine Publications Limited board meetings and reports to the Chairman. Occasional travel is required.
The application deadline is Monday 21 August 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview with a panel of Directors and Trustees in early September 2023.

Francis Haskell Memorial Fund The Burlington Magazine Foundation
2023 Scholarships
Grants of up to £2000 will be awarded from the Francis Haskell Memorial Fund this year to enable scholars to spend time in libraries or archives carrying out advanced research in the history of western art.
Preference may be given to candidates in the early stages of their careers; to subjects related to the commissioning, collecting or interpretation of works of art made before 1914; and to research carried out outside the applicant’s country of residence. Applications from students exploring possible subjects for doctoral research are not appropriate. The scholarships are intended for discrete projects that can be realised with the funding requested.
Scholars from any country may apply. Applications, including a two-page proposal, a C.V. and a budget, should be sent by email to francishaskellmemorialfund@gmail.com by 30 July 2023 – please label all attachments with the surname of the Applicant. There is no application form. Applicants should ask two referees to write separately to the same email address by the same deadline in support of their proposal.
