A RICH
GOLF
History
Burlington Golf and Country Club was incorporated through the efforts of a number of prominent Hamilton and Burlington citizens in 1922. The first nine holes opened in 1923 with the completion of eighteen holes and the clubhouse in 1924. The topography of the property with its sandy loam and attractive location on Burlington Bay provided a natural design base for a golf course. Today’s challenging layout is essentially as designed by the legendary golf course architect Stanley Thompson. The Club’s first professional, Andy Anderson with a solid record of golf course construction in his native Scotland kept a watchful eye during construction. The first clubhouse, designed in a traditional style, was erected on the highland near the southeast boundary. The view of the Bay and City of Hamilton commanded such attention that the original Prospectus enthused, “A more beautiful or more wonderfully entrancing situation would be impossible to imagine”. In 1959, a modern curling rink with a unique floating slab was added which provided six sheets of ice and a state of the art curling rink floor was installed in 2011. The total curling facility including lounge and locker room service is acknowledged to be among the finest in Southern Ontario. In 1969 the original clubhouse was replaced by a larger, more modern building and a new pro shop was added in 1989. Always striving for continuous improvement, in October 2005, the members voted in favour of building a new clubhouse. This award winning clubhouse was completed in July of 2008. BGCC counts winners of Provincial and National titles among its past and current membership, along with hosting the Men’s and Ladies, P.G.A. of Canada Championships and many G.A.O. Championships. The annual Burlington Invitation traditionally attracts the finest amateur golfers from Southern Ontario and Western New York State.

Tour Burlington
Golf!
A very strong dogleg left starting hole. Shorter hitters play to the right side of the fairway off the tee. Longer hitters may take on the left hand bunkers with a driver, or play a fairway wood to the centre of the fairway. Stay away from the left side for the entire length of the hole as a deep valley swallows up golf balls.
Hole# 2 Par 3
A long par 3 with a hazard down the entire left side. A down slope 25 yards short of the green allows a shorter, more accurate club to run the ball on to the front of the green. Not many 2’s on this hole.
Hole# 3 Par 5
Dog leg left par 5. Hug the left side of the fairway here off the tee. Longer hitters may have the opportunity to go for the green in two. Make sure when you hit your approach you stay short of the pin. Putts from above the pin tend to be very, very quick.
Hole# 4 Par 4
A dog leg right par 4 that plays quite long. Favour the left side off the tee as the fairway runs to the right. The second shot plays slightly uphill to a very interesting green site.
Hole# 5 Par 4
A short par 4, so it may seem like you’re getting a break after the first four difficult holes. Be careful however, favour the left side of the fairway again off the tee. Play your second to the middle of the green as up and downs are difficult on this hole especially if you are long.
Hole# 6 Par 3
A picturesque medium length par 3 over water. You may want to aim for the left edge of the green as anything on this side will kick your ball to the right. Typically a high shot is preferred here as the green is quite elevated once you have carried the water.
Hole# 7 Par 5
A fairly sharp dogleg short par 5. Favour the right side of the fairway for short to medium hitters as this really opens up the hole. Longer hitters using a driver must contend with the trees on the left to keep the ball in the fairway. Do not go left into the trees as the members refer to this area as Alcatraz, a very difficult escape. This should be a hole to make a good score but it is all about the placement of your tee shot.
Hole# 8 Par 4
A short par 4 with fairway bunkers right and left. Either play short of the bunkers, or try to carry the 235 yards over the right bunker. Take one less club on your second shot as there is out of bounds directly over the back of the green.
August 2017
Hole# 1 Par 4
4
www.burlingtongolfclub.com
Hole# 9 Par 3
Hole# 10 Par 4
A longish carry to the right of the large pine on the left is perfect off the tee. Stay slightly right with your second as straying too far on the left side of the green presents a terrible hazard. Please take note of the flag position as this is a two tiered green and being on the wrong side of the hole can make for a difficult putt.
Hole# 11 Par 4
This long par 4 is the number 1 handicap on the course. Play for the centre of the fairway as this hole is totally tree lined. Now you have a choice, either play short of the fairway bunkers or blast your second shot to a very well guarded green. The green is elevated with a false front so make sure you hit enough club to ensure you stay on the green. Only a very low shot will run up onto the green, but there are deep bunkers left and right.
Hole# 12 Par 5
A medium length par 5, that is really a birdie hole. Play to the centre of the fairway off the tee, hit your second on or close to the green and make a good score here. This is one of the easiest holes relative to par on the course.
Hole# 13 Par 4
A shortish par 4 where tee shot placement is key. Favour the left side of the fairway for longer hitters, the shorter hitter may use the right side to carry their ball to the left side of the fairway. A short iron to a false front green where you must carry the ball onto the green. Green slopes more right to left than it appears.
Hole# 14 Par 4
A long par 4 with out of bounds to the right and a hazard and fairway bunker down the left side. Keeping the ball in the fairway is obviously a key here. Don’t be too aggressive on your approach to the green on this hole. Over the back of this green is not a very nice position to play from as it falls away dramatically.
Hole# 15 Par 3
A shortish par 3 with a very shallow, but wide green. Play to the centre of the green on this one, as par is a good score here. Shorter and lower ball hitters can play to the left, land the ball short and have it run up onto the green.
Hole# 16 Par 4
Due to the elevation change, this hole plays shorter than the yardage. Favour the left side of the fairway, and hit your short iron on to the green. A good opportunity for a birdie here.
Hole# 17 Par 4
A brute of a hole. Longer hitters should favour the left side of the fairway as Lake Ontario looms on the right. A short to mid iron into a very well-guarded green. Shorter hitters may consider laying their second shot up 90 yards short, and depend on their wedge play to attain a par on this very difficult hole.
Hole# 18 Par 3
A par three finishing hole? Yes, but it has ruined many a round. Always play short of the hole here unless it is mandatory that you make a birdie. A very challenging finish to your day.
August 2017
This hole looks like an easy par 3 but be careful. If you are not aggressive by nature, it is good to take one less club on this hole and play short. The valley left is a horrible spot to play from, long right is no bargain, and over the green is simply a big mistake. If you come up short you are left with a fairly easy chip to a very flat green.

ESID The Electronic Storm Identification Device (ESID) was installed at the beginning of 2012 to track storms as they approach the area. Whenever there is a strike within the danger area (0-5 miles), the sirens will alert, play will stop and shelter must be sought immediately. The first siren, to immediately suspend play, is a high-pitched siren-like sound and the second siren, to resume play, is a quieter constant beeping tone. In addition, there are flashing lights in the Parking lot and on the 13th tee that indicate it is not safe to return to the course. Everyone must remain in their safe area until the siren (constant beeping tone) indicates that it is safe to resume play.

Curling
Curling at BGCC In 1959, acknowledging the growing sport of curling, BGCC took the opportunity to build a six sheet rink featuring a unique floating slab. The members viewed this as a way to enjoy the rewards of year round activity. The 2009/10 curling season marked the 50th Anniversary. A new state of the art rink floor was installed in 2011. Events The Club has hosted many Ontario Curling Championships and has enjoyed the honor of claiming the provincial championship banner in both Men’s and Ladies competitions. In November 2009, the Club played host to the Canadian Mixed National Championship, which hosted world class curlers and garnered media coverage which brought curling at BGCC to thousands of homes. In addition to the outside events, there is a wide variety of in-house curling events as well. Curling Lounge and Member Dining Room With the rebuilding of the Clubhouse in 2008, the Curling Lounge was completely refurbished and boasts a first class lounge / bar facility. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and curlers are encouraged to enjoy the lounge with their family or fellow curlers for casual dining. In addition, Curling Members have year-round access to the main member lounge, dining room and outdoor patio area. Curling for all Ages Curling truly is a game to be enjoyed by all ages. The Club provides instruction programs for all skill levels, from beginners to intermediate and we offer an unlimited variety of league choices with scheduled day and evening curling for ladies, men and mixed leagues. BGCC recognizes that the future of the sport of curling is in the Juniors, and we offer an active Junior program for ages 8 to 18.
