Are you getting enough oxygen? Oxygen therapy for: • Diabetes complications • Concussion and brain injuries • Cancer care • Stroke recovery • Sports injury and performance • Wound healing • Surgical recovery • Beauty / wellness
Return to normal lifestyle with oxygen therapy STROKE RECOVERY “I had a stroke and was in a hospital. I couldn’t talk and use my right arm and was in a wheelchair, not improving much. My doctor suggested oxygen therapy.
DIABETES CARE “I have tried many natural remedies to help with the negative long term effects that my very brittle diabetes has caused. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proven to be the very best non-intrusive therapy with the most positive end results.
After 35 sessions I am back to work now playing my instrument professionally. Could not be more grateful! And I am telling everyone. I got my life back!”
Doug S. Coquitlam, BC
SPORTS INJURY
I would definitely recommend this therapy to everyone. Thank you so very much.”
CONCUSSION RECOVERY “It is so difficult to use words to describe what happened to me. I truly hope others will find the breakthrough that I have found [in hyperbaric oxygen therapy]”
“Came in broken, few sessions later I was almost fixed! From Wheelchair back on a snowboard in six months. Miracle! Thank you so much!”
Patrick M. New Westminster, BC
“I want to thank you for all your years of sharing your facilities because if you didn’t I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

A Breath of Fresh Oxygen Hyperbaric oxygen therapy gives hope to people with brain injury, diabetes, cancer, and fibromyalgia
Are you suffering from complications of diabetes, long-standing wounds, head injury or concussion, stroke, cancer, or fibromyalgia? If so, then hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be for you. Hyperbaric oxygen is a powerful natural medication without side effects, delivered in professional clinics and hospitals by trained doctors. Increased oxygen concentration in all organs and tissues provide optimal conditions for healing, rejuvenation and revitalization. It improves tissue microcirculation and function as well as boosts the immune system and stem cell production. The therapy is relaxing, non-invasive and painless. During a 60 to 90 minutes therapy, you comfortably lay on a bed, listen to music, watch video or take a nap while the pressure gently increases to the desired “depth” using pure medical grade oxygen. Hyperbaric doctor checks you before and after the therapy and monitors the entire therapy session. The BaroMedical Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic and Wound Care Center in Burnaby prides itself as the only Lower Mainland facility to operate top-of-the line monoplace oxygen chambers, all issued Operational and Medical Device Licenses from Health Canada and BC Safety Authority. A team of trained hyperbaric doctors supervise your therapy in four oxygen compressed single occupancy chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proven successful natural medication on its own or as an addition to other therapies and pharmaceuticals, increasing their effect and reducing unwanted side effects. Breathing 100% oxygen under pressure in a hyperbaric chamber increases blood oxygen concentration by 25 to 30 times and oxygen
molecules are forced deep into areas of poor circulation providing optimal conditions for healing. Hyperbaric oxygen helps stroke survivors regain some, if not most, of their functional capacity by reviving “sleeping” brain cells even if they have remained dormant for years. It also minimizes the symptoms of concussion through the same mechanism. Oxygenation decreases pain, infection, swelling and inflammation to speed up recovery in sportsrelated injuries. People with slow-healing wounds and diabetics with poor circulation stand to benefit from the therapy as it helps to rebuild the microcirculation. In cancer care, the therapy speeds up recovery after surgery, enhances the effect of chemotherapy and lessens the complications brought about by radiation therapy. Hyper-oxygenation of the cancer tissue has been shown to slow down tumor growth and lessen chances of metastasis. For the health-conscious, the therapy boosts the immune system and promotes circulation of stem cells that help to repair the ailing organs of the body.

What’s SUP?
Standup paddleboarding or SUP for short is a fun watersport that is perfect for the West Coast. Whether you want to navigate the ocean or lakes while feeling like you are walking on water, get some great exercise, or simply test your balance via this surf-inspired sport, there is a paddleboard location and variation for you to try. It’s easy and accessible, and there are many options from a rental or lesson to borrowing or purchasing a board locally. You can even do yoga on a SUP! The sport was born of a practical nature when Hawaiian surf scouts grabbed paddles to track bigger waves offshore while standing on their surfboards. Today the boards and paddles have been adapted to make standing easier while adding speed and stability. Even still, there are many SUP boards to choose from, each with a different shape and fin style, from sleek slim racing boards, to shorter surf-style boards (yes, you can still catch some waves
22
while paddleboarding) to longer wider boards for beginners, and boards scaled down to be handled by kids. Paddles vary too, depending on what you’d like to do: catch waves, steady yourself in choppy seas, or propel yourself like crazy across calm waters. My first try at paddleboarding was atop an easy-to-manoeuvre beginner board, offered by Hummingbird Mobile Paddle Board Rentals at Ellison Park on Lake Okanagan, in Vernon. Ever curious about the paddleboarders I’d seen at Davis Bay, it took a little mini-vacay to inspire me to give it a try. The wide, light and inviting inflatable paddle boards and calm lake waters made my intro to SUP a breeze. After a brief introduction to the board, a life-jacket fitting, paddle orientation and a sunglasses safety briefing (hint: use inflatable sunglass straps to avoid losing your RayBans if you tumble into the surf) we hooked up our leashes
(a rope that attaches your paddleboard to your ankle) and took to the water. The inflatable paddleboards are forgiving if you fall and easy to handle. Essentially, we pushed off, straddling the middle of the paddleboard on our knees, with the paddle across the board in front. Using our hands and paddle as a ballast, you then stand up, one foot at a time. Take a few moments to get your balance – a wide stance helps. That’s when your core strength kicks in and you can thank your ab workout, Pilates or yoga routine for giving you the stability to stay upright. After you’re up, paddle away, by gripping the top handle of the paddle with one arm and the middle of the shaft with the other. Keep your lower arm straight, alternating sides to move forward in a steady fashion. Keep your feet parallel and shoulder width apart. Hint: choose a calm day to try paddleboarding and don’t be afraid to fall in – that’s half the fun!

How to avoid unhealthy habits at the office According to statistics from Employment and Social Development Canada website, working professionals spend an average of 7.3 hours per day at work. Many professionals spend much of their time at work sitting down in front of a computer, which can be detrimental to longterm health. Staying sedentary for long periods of time can contribute to a host of health ailments, including being overweight and obese. But professionals who work in offices can take various steps to ensure all that time at work is not having an adverse affect on their overall health. · Get out of your seat. Modern workplaces are built around sitting, so workers must find some time to stand up and stretch. Sitting too long can compromise posture and lead to craning of the neck for looking at the computer screen. Get out of your chair, walk around the office and get the blood moving in your body.
· Take frequent breaks. Stale air inside an office environment can make you feel fatigued and less productive. Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use every opportunity possible to get up and leave your office. Instead of sending an instant message or making a phone call step away from your desk and speak with a colleague. · Disinfect surfaces often. Oftentimes, when one person at the office gets sick, many others soon follow. Colds and the flu can spread rapidly in close quarters. Keep your desk drawer stocked with some alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and routinely clean your keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, and desk surfaces. You also can wipe off door handles and knobs around the office if you want to be proactive. It’s not difficult to remain healthy at work. Breaks, exercise and watching what you eat can help.

BUILDING and MAINTAINING strong bones Osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become weakened and brittle over time,
more than 8.9 million fractures a year. Younger individuals typically heal from fractures more quickly than older adults, who often discover that fractures greatly impede their mobility and quality of life. Bone health is important at any age, but it is particularly crucial as a person gets older. Without a strong framework of bones, the body collapses on itself and rates of fracture increase. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep and maintain strong bones.
affects millions of people across the globe. The International Osteoporosis Foundation says an osteoporosis-related fracture occurs roughly once every 3 seconds, accounting for
800 international units (IUs) of vitamin D every day, and between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily. Higher-intensity exercises should be mixed with lowerintensity workouts for the best results. Weightbearing exercises, such as hiking, dancing and stair-climbing, can build between 1 and 3 percent of bone. An exercise regimen also should
include lifting weights or using resistance bands. Quitting smoking also can promote strong bones. Smoking has been linked to poor skeletal health in both men and women, and the longer one smokes, the greater one's risk for fracture.
How to adjust to a healthier diet Change often requires an adjustment period. Men and women who switch jobs may need a few weeks before they feel fully comfortable in a new office, while students changing schools may also need some time to adapt to their new surroundings.
· Go slowly. Some people are capable of going cold turkey when adjusting to a new diet, while others must take a more gradual approach. Unless a health condition that requires immediate change is driving your dietary changes, take things slowly so your body acclimates to its new diet over time. Such an approach may make your efforts more successful over the long haul than making more sudden, drastic changes. For example, suddenly cutting your daily calorie intake in half may force you into old, unhealthy habits when hunger pangs
An adjustment period is also common when people decide to adopt healthier diets. Diet is often habit-forming, and men and women will need some time to adjust as they kick some bad dietary habits in favor of healthier fare. The following are some simple ways to make that adjustment period a little easier to swallow.

inevitably arise. But gradually reducing your caloric intake over time may make it easier for your body to adjust, decreasing the likelihood that you will relapse into bad habits. · Explain your motivation to loved ones. Adults, especially married men and women and parents, may find adjusting to a new diet especially difficult unless their spouses and/or families are making similar adjustments. If you are the only member of your household who will be adjusting to a new diet, explain your efforts and motivation to your loved ones. Such an explanation will make them less likely to bring unhealthy foods into your home. In addition, your loved ones can prove an invaluable source of support as you make this big adjustment in your life. · Embrace positive results, even if they are initially underwhelming. Just because you have adopted a new diet does not mean you will see immediate results. Fad diets meant to last just a few weeks may produce immediate results, but such results likely will not withstand the test of time, and you may even gain weight when you revert to some of your old eating
habits. The right diet will produce long-lasting results, but you must allow for some time before such diets lead to significant weight loss. In the meantime, place more emphasis on how you feel than the figure that shows up on your bathroom scale each morning. Upon adopting a healthier diet, you will start to notice how much better you feel than you felt when eating a diet filled with fatty, unhealthy foods. Remind yourself of this extra hop in your step as you continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle. · Don’t give up. Your adjustment period will require some discipline, and there may be moments when you backslide into bad habits. If that happens, don’t allow it to derail all of the progress you have made since switching to a healthier diet. Just accept that you had a setback and resolve to do your best to avoid having another one. The sooner you get back on a healthier track, the better you will feel.

Common roadblocks to weight loss – overcome them Diet, exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are essential elements of a healthy lifestyle. Adapting to a new diet and embracing a new exercise regimen requires a strong commitment, but so, too, does maintaining a healthy weight once those pounds have been shed. Losing weight can be difficult, and many people who set out to shed a few extra pounds encounter a handful of common obstacles along the way. These roadblocks do not disappear once weight has been lost, which only highlights the long-term approach men and women must take as they look to lose weight and keep pounds off for the long haul. The following are a handful of obstacles men and
women may face as they look to lose weight and keep weight off for years to come. SNACKS Snacking is perhaps the biggest obstacle to weight loss many men and women will face. Choosing the wrong snacks can compromise your efforts to lose weight, but the right snacks can provide energy boosts without negatively impacting your waistline. Rather than high-calorie snacks that offer little nutritional value, choose low-calorie alternatives. For example, instead of fried tortilla chips, opt for reduced-sodium baked chips instead. In lieu of ice cream on a warm afternoon, choose low-fat yogurt, which can be just as refreshing without all those empty calories. RESTAURANTS Dining out is another potential obstacle for men and women trying to lose weight. Avoid buffet-style restaurants or those establishments you know serve especially large portions. When dining out, ask to swap
26
high-calorie side dishes with vegetables when possible, and choose nutritional, low-calorie entrées that won’t compromise the hard work you put in all week eating at home. BUSY SCHEDULES One common obstacle that compromises even the most dedicated weight loss efforts is a hectic schedule. Commitments to career and family can make it easy to veer off course with regard to diet. Planning is often an effective way to overcome a hectic schedule. Plan meals in advance so you are not tempted to order takeout or delivery after a long day at the office. Use weekends to schedule and plan your weeknight meals, preparing meals in advance when possible and using a slow cooker so your meals are cooking while you’re
at the office and ready to eat the moment you arrive home at night. SETBACKS Setbacks are another common obstacle that can threaten weight loss goals. Everyone experiences a setback or two as they attempt to lose weight and keep that weight off. Don’t allow such setbacks to derail your weight loss efforts, and don’t beat yourself up when a setback occurs. Respond by rededicating yourself to your weight loss efforts, and before you know it, you will be back on track. Men and women can expect to face some common obstacles as they attempt to lose weight. Anticipating those obstacles is a great way to ensure they don’t derail your weight loss efforts. METRO CREATIVE
Strategies to motivate students to be more physically active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. CHOOSE THE RIGHT ACTIVITY Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. LIMIT SCREEN TIME Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents
can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen. JOIN IN THE FUN Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. INVOLVE KIDS IN YOUR OWN PURSUITS Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

The pitfalls of sugar Dr. Paul Martiquet, Medical Health Officer Not for the first time we hear that sugar might not be good for us. That is not news, but the evidence keeps mounting and it’s not looking good for an ingredient added to so many foods. In the past we worried about sugar because it might push us towards diabetes, lead to obesity or cause cavities. That is all still true, but the facts are much worse as recent research links sugar to more disease and negative health effects. Before anyone panics, we should say we are talking about added sugar, not the kind found naturally in foods like fruit or dairy products. Added sugars are overwhelmingly white sugar (sucrose) and high-fructose corn syrup, but also include honey, molasses, agave and fruit juice concentrate. The latter may sound healthier, but they are not. As expected, we find added sugar in candies, cookies and soft drinks, but also in a lot of places you would not think to look like canned soup, bread, some yogurt, pasta sauce, ketchup, baked beans and more. One of the effects of the battle against added fats was an increase in the use of sugars to fill in for the taste lost with the reduced fat. Unfortunately, research now links high levels of added sugar to multiple adverse health effects well beyond earlier concerns. National data for American adults over 20 years shows that 10 per cent of people who consumed the most added sugar (a quarter of their daily calories or more) were almost three times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who consumed the least. This is irrespective of other risk factors from activity level to age to ethnicity. Analysis of a dozen clinical trials in 2014 found that relatively high sugar intake increased blood pressure by up to eight points on average. The findings suggested added sugar may contribute more to hypertension than added salt.
28
Blood cholesterol is another concern. A study of young adults by New Zealand researchers found that sugary beverages containing high-fructose corn syrup raised LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in as little as two weeks. And we can’t forget diabetes. The Mayo Clinic reports that added sugar, especially fructose, is a “principal driver” of type 2 diabetes. Table sugar is half fructose while high-fructose corn syrup is usually about 60 per cent fructose. The Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation, among others, suggests we get no more than 10 per cent of total daily calories from added sugar – that means about 48 grams for a 2,000 calorie diet (one can of pop provides 85 per cent of that total). They also offer good ideas to make it easier to avoid added sugar. Thirsty? Instead of reaching for a giant bucket of pop or even a can, drink water. Want flavour? Add a slice of orange or lemon, or maybe fresh mint. And instead of ordering that fancy coffee drink with all that syrup and added sugars, try a latte with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon. Instead of a chai latte, order chai tea and add steamed milk. Packaged foods offer another opportunity to find added sugars. Read the Nutrition Facts table and the ingredient list with an eye to the total amount of sugar. The ingredient list will tell you where the sugar is coming from. Watch out for added sugars that come from sources such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, evaporated cane juice, molasses, corn syrup, dextrose or concentrated fruit juice. All supply calories with no nutritional benefits. Sugar will still cause cavities and help us put on too much weight, but we now know that added sugar is a problem all on its own, a risk independent of other poor dietary choices. HEALTHY EATING SIMPLIFIED Dr. Paul Martiquet, Medical Health Officer We are too busy. It’s too complicated. It’s too expensive. I don’t even like kale! We use them all in our effort to prevent ourselves from making better eating choices. Of course, we all say we aspire to eating better, but there always seems to be something in the way. But we should at least be honest about it: we are not able to commit to a few tiny steps to discover how easy it is to eat well. By now there should be very few people who have not heard about Canada’s Food Guide. Significantly fewer people have actually followed up by looking at the Guide, and fewer yet are using it. Still, Canada’s Food Guide is one of the best places to discover healthy eating. Using the information from the Guide will help you and your family know how much food you need and what choices are best. Following the tips for food and activity will help meet your needs for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Better yet, it will also reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer and osteoporosis. Oh, and you will feel more vital and in better health. Canada’s Food Guide provides practical ideas for choosing foods, meal planning, and even offers menu suggestions, dozens of them! For example, if you think breakfast is either a bowl of cereal or bacon and eggs, try this for a change: Mix canned peaches or frozen berries with low fat yogurt and have a slice of raisin bread. For anyone still thinking that “it’s too much trouble,” two new tools have recently been added to the Food Guide. First is the Eat Well Plate, which simplifies the Food Guide by clearly showing the proportions of various food groups in a healthy meal. It offers suggestions for what constitutes good choices. The best way to use the Eat Well Plate is alongside Canada’s Food Guide. This need not be a difficult process because once you have learned some of the basics about how to combine foods for a healthy meal, it is simple enough to extend the idea. Still too much work? How about the My Food
Guide mobile app? It will make meal choices convenient and simple. It will let you choose your favourite foods from each food group, see how much food is in one service. And the app will give you access to other tools and resources to help you eat well. For anyone without a smartphone, the same information is also available online via the same link as the Food Guide app. Naturally, we could lecture on about how everyone should be improving their eating choices, but let’s be honest: we already know that we “should” be doing it. How about for a change, we “want” to eat better? Eating well means eating healthy, and this is something that is good for you, and for your children. Food and Mental Health Hugh Macauley/Contributing Writer between mood and hydration. In this pursuit, avoid alcohol – which is a depressant as will as a diuretic – and caffeine.
It is a timeworn cliché that “you are what you eat.” But like most clichés, there is a kernel of truth, and recent studies are showing that diet can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Further, this same research is beginning to show that healthy eating habits can actually prevent mental illness. Before going into specifics, I’ll mention the biggest barrier to the benefits of a wholesome diet: economy. Folks living with a mental illness or mood disorder tend to be poor. A healthy diet can be more expensive. Fish, fruit and vegetables can be particularly pricey. However, by cutting down on pop, energy drinks, salty snacks and take-out foods, you can save money so you can buy healthier foods. Take care to buy only as much as you know you can use within the next few days, to reduce waste. You can also cut your costs by taking advantage of special promotions and sales, which are regularly advertised in the Coast Reporter. If you live alone you could save money by splitting purchases with friends (buying bulk is usually cheaper) or by cooking several portions of a dish and freezing some of them. This also saves energy and saves you the effort of preparing meals every day. Frozen fruit and vegetables are often cheaper than fresh produce and are usually just as good nutritionally (with no wastage). Fresh fruit and vegetables are usually cheapest when they are in season. Beans, lentils and soy proteins are also cheaper than meat and just as nutritious. To give yourself the best chance to maintain a happy mood, ensure that you are adequately hydrated, as studies have shown a strong link

As mentioned above, try to eat fewer high-sugar foods and more wholegrain cereals, nuts, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables. These contain complex carbohydrates that are absorbed relatively slowly into the bloodstream. In contrast, foods that are highly refined or processed often contain unexpectedly high levels of sugar, which enters the bloodstream rapidly. This causes and initial high, followed by a crash as more insulin is produced. This causes the classic “sugar blues.” There are other good reasons to included lots of complex carbs in your diet. One is that they are filling; meaning one does not have to eat so often. Another is that some of these foods – particularly whole grains, nuts, beans, and lentils – contain thiamin (B1), a vitamin that has been associated with control of mood, and folate and zinc. The science is still evolving, but increasingly studies show that people living with symptoms of depression find their mood improves after taking supplements of these compounds. As I mentioned at the beginning, the biggest barrier to the benefits of a healthy diet is not knowledge; it is affordability. Here on the Coast, there are plenty of ways to become involved in a food co-op. There are plenty around and bulk buying with several others can significantly reduce your food costs. As well, by joining (or forming) a food group, you will discover folks have all sorts of creative ideas in their mental pantry, just waiting to be shared. For more info about food co-ops, contact me at coast.feedback@gmail.com (Hugh Macaulay is vice president of the Arrowhead Clubhouse Society board of directors. He writes monthly about mental health issues with a focus on the Sunshine Coast.)
