Bursary will honour the man he was Cornelia Naylor staff reporter

A local family wants their son to be remembered for the loyal, big-hearted young man he was – not for the disease that ended his life one year ago today. Mark Hague graduated from Burnaby North Secondary in 2009. He was a confident guy and a loyal friend, brother and son. A natural-born leader, he had won a leadership award at Holy Cross Elementary in Grade 7 and later took on a part-time job teaching ice-skating lessons to kids for the City of Burnaby. As an athlete, playing rep soccer, minor ice hockey and minor lacrosse, he always wore either a captain’s C or an assistant captain’s A on his chest. He was a leader among his friends as well. “His friends really looked up to him,” his mom Marcella said. “If there was ever a problem, he was the go-to guy.” That’s just the way Mark was, she said. “Some kids are just more confident than others, and he was just one of them.” Before Mark died, however, that confidence was to be shattered almost beyond recognition in a battle against drug addiction – a struggle that ended in a fatal overdose one year ago today. “That wasn’t Mark,” Marcella said, her tears coming suddenly. “It’s a tragedy. It’s a horrible tragedy. That kid had so much going on for him, but the disease strangled him. He told me, ‘Mom, I hate my life.’ He Bursary Page 8

Burnaby has longest wait lists in the region For knees, gall bladders and hernias, it’s four times longer Cornelia Naylor staff reporter

Burnaby is not the place you want to blow out your knee. Local residents looking to get their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) fixed wait an

average of nine months – or more than four times – longer than the provincial average, according B.C. Ministry of Health data. They also wait more than four times longer to get their gall bladders removed and their hernias repaired. Overall, Burnaby Hospital has the longest waits for adult elective surgery in the Lower Mainland, and they could get even longer after a Fraser Health decision to delay elective surgeries in the health region

in January and February to avoid operating room budget overruns. Surgeries during the last two months of the fiscal year, which ended in March, were set to outpace budgets, so cases at some hospitals were delayed and bumped into the next budget cycle. “We have a budget given to us every year, and with that we have so many surgical cases, so we monitor that all the time,” Fraser Health executive director of surgery

Getting a good workout in Burnaby is now as easy as a walk in the park. There’s a new outdoor gym in the city where local residents can exercise in the fresh air and enjoy a full workout. The City of Burnaby has installed 12 fitness stations along the Trail of Hope, a 2.5-kilometre circuit in Central Park, in hopes residents will get outdoors and be more active. “People can come at their leisure, use the machinery at their own pace, and it’s free,” said Dave Ellenwood, parks director for the City of Burnaby. “This is really the most modern equipment.” The equipment focuses on balance, stretching, strength, cardio and flexibility. The stations include an elliptical, a chin-up bar, a leg press and chest press, to name a few. “They can do it at their own pace. It’s exactly what we want in parks and recreation, where they don’t have to engage in structured activity,” Ellenwood said. “It gets people out and moving.” To make sure people are using the stations properly, each piece has a yellow sticker with a QR code, and people with a QR code app in their smartphones can scan the code to see a Youtube video of a professional instructor demonstrating how to use the equipment. There are even holders for cellphones, so users can watch hands-free. The circuit is already becoming popular with parkgoers, and Ellenwood mentioned there have been people lining up to use the equipment. Each station also sits on a rubber circle made of ground tires, donated by Tire Stewardship B.C. and Kal Tire. There are maps of the circuit with illustrations of each piece of equipment, available at local rec centres and libraries, or online at tinyurl.com/ BurnabyFitnessCircuit. (The instructional videos are also available on the city’s website.)

114-year-old heritage house to be razed Jacob Zinn staff reporter

One of Burnaby’s oldest heritage houses could soon be torn down. In a report that went before the city’s community heritage commission last week, the owners of the Alexander Evans residence – also known as Seven Gables – notified the city of their intent to remove the 114-year-old building from the property. Staff noted that the planning department has extensively discussed several options to maintain the house with the owners, who purchased the lot at 9957 Sullivan St. in September. The

Your car may be ugly, but if it runs, you can keep it in Burnaby. On Monday, Burnaby city council approved an amendment to the derelict vehicles section of the city’s unsightly premises bylaw, noting that if you can prove it runs, you can keep it on your property – provided it’s insured. “’Derelict vehicle’ means any vehicle propelled otherwise than by muscle power, or any part thereof that a) is not capable of operating under its own power; and b) is not validly insured and licensed under the

Backyard fire sends four to hospital Cayley Dobie staff reporter

A goodbye party held in the backyard of a south Burnaby home on Wednesday night took a turn for the worse when the camp fire guests were gathered around exploded. The incident happened around 10 p.m. on May 14 in the backyard of a home in the 6000 block of 12th Avenue. The Bottomley family was hosting a goodbye party for their son and daughter, who were supposed to leave for new jobs in Alberta on Friday. Twenty-three-year-old Sid Bottomley’s friends, sisters and dad were all in the backyard, enjoying a campfire his dad had lit earlier that evening. When the fire began to die, Bottomley’s dad, Paul, poured an accelerant on it, as he had done many times before – but this time the fire exploded, burning Paul and three guests. Paul and one of the guests sustained second degree burns while two others suffered third degree

burns. Bottomley said one of his friends was so badly burned she was almost naked. “I was really shocked,” he said. “We’ve used oil before.” Bottomley was on his way back to his family’s home on 12th Avenue near Marine Drive when the explosion happened. A fire truck passed him at a nearby three-way stop and as he got closer, he could see several police cruisers and an ambulance blocking the entrance to his house. “There was two cop cars blocking the end of the road, and it looked like a movie scene,” he said. “There was about four or five fire trucks and eight or so police cars

and two ambulances.” According to Burnaby assistant fire chief Lane Zimmerman, the explosion (or flame-up) was indeed the result of the accelerant being poured onto the fire. Fire investigators were expected to return to the Bottomley resident to further investigate the incident. Bottomley’s father and one friend were released from hospital shortly after the incident, but his two friends who suffered the third degree burns are expected to be in hospital for at least a week while they are treated. OUR VIEW

And why shouldn’t we trust the government’s decisions on these matters? After all, only this week we learned the government has spent more than $1.5 million over the last three years to house a team of “testers” in Victoria tasked with fixing the province’s frequently troubled internal computer system. The travelling test squad, according to media reports, consists of as many as 24 ministry employees who work to troubleshoot the ministry’s computer system, which continues to run at limited capacity. Oh, and did we mention the govern-

ment has paid an average of $514,000 annually for hotels, meals and flights for testers to commute when needed to the capital since 2011, out of money earmarked for the system’s operating budget? No wonder it doesn’t want to let poor single moms be able to use child support to feed their kids. We’re sure there’s a principle involved. Perhaps Christy Clark should change her slogan from“Families first” to “Meals for testers of broken government systems first.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Eagle Creek closure ‘shocking’ Dear Editor:

It’s shocking and extremely upsetting! How is it that I walked into my favourite restaurant on Tuesday, sat down, ordered lunch and then was approached by another regular customer carrying a petition against the closure of the place the next day? Pardon? Closing down? Excuse me? The next day? I have been a patron of Eagle Creek (Inn on the Green) for almost 20 years. The service, food, atmosphere and setting have always been excellent. What’s going on? Why was this kept a secret? Was the “city” making sure the public had no time to take any action against the closure? Of all times of

the year, why would the city close the restaurant during the busiest season? It’s shocking and extremely upsetting! I wish all the amazing employees the best of luck and, along with countless others, will miss them very much. Ila Appleby, Burnaby

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Intersection is dangerous continued from page 6

I definitively hope that I am wrong when I say that this, I believe, won’t be the last. Next will be a pedestrian. That particular intersection is one of the most dangerous crossing intersections I know. With the condos on the east side of Brentwood Town Centre, that intersection has become an extremely busy one at all

times of the day. The need for a pedestrian overpass is a crucial one, especially in the future with the projected increase of population and traffic as a result of the Brentwood redevelopments. I believe the changes are necessary, but we must urge our politicians to address and make sure that all safety issues measure up to the changes and will not be pushed to the back burners. to come. Given the current situation in Victoria – where the size of the base perpupil education grant is frozen but provincial revenue transfers still rise as enrolled-student count increases – the pragmatic,

education quality-preserving strategy is an outreach campaign to local parents with children not enrolled in a district school. Just a few hundred net additional enrolments (drawn from approximately 7,000 identified non-enrolled children) can

raise the revenue required to protect education quality for 23,000 enrolled children – and the jobs of teachers, custodians and other staff. How much plainer must the figures be? G. Bruce Friesen is with the Burnaby First Coalition.

Facebook I Rose Ferr: Needs a fence down the middle of the road to prevent people from crossing and perhaps an overpass for pedestrians. I see the foot traffic weaving between cars every day, it worries me. Facebook I Maggie May: Totally agree. You have a sidewalk that lets out from that driveway and the only places to cross on that very steep street are either at the bottom of it where it meets Lougheed or up the hill almost a full block to the street behind the mall. Meanwhile across from the mall there are at least two streets/lanes that pedestrians would want to cross to for access to their residences. Needs a pedestrian controlled crosswalk at that point or close the access from that parking lot to Beta.

THE BURNABYNOW COLUMN: Site C dam has a steep mountain to climb, by Keith Baldrey – May 12

Comment via BurnabyNOW.com I PVEA_Coordinator: Actually, Site C would impact over 30,000 acres of agricultural land, including 6,500 acres of prime, Class and 2 land which has production yields equal to, and in some cases exceeding that of the southern parts of the province. Agricultural economist, Wendy Holm calculated that the lands that would be lost to flooding could yield $2 billion from farm gate sales and secondary economic activity during the hundred years that Site C is expected to last. Of course, economic generation would continue after 100 years as well, whereas with Site C, benefits end. The Peace River Valley contains a unique microclimate where crops such as corn, field tomatoes and melons are grown. In fact, a market gardener in the valley claims that his corn is ready 2 weeks before his relatives’ who are growing it in Salmon Arm!

THE BURNABYNOW LETTER: Teachers expect too much – May 8

Comment via BurnabyNOW.com I MaImequer0: Startling... and these people are teaching our children topics such as anti-bullying, fair-play, etc... Leading by example is a very effective teaching method... what example does this send to our children.... ‘Do as I say, not as I do’. LOL... so many have a perception that kids these days suffer from an unreasonable sense of entitlement... wonder where they get it from??

Bursary: Will encourage leadership continued from page 1

hated that. And he worked the program. He tried so hard.” Her son’s descent into addiction took off quickly after graduation. He spent time in treatment but relapsed often. “He said, ‘I hate that I can’t be normal,’” Marcella said. On her journey to make sense of her son’s death, she has learned addiction is no respecter of persons. “Addiction is a disease, and it can rob anybody, from any walk of life,” she said. But that hasn’t made her family’s loss any less devastating. “I just get up and do my thing, put one foot in front of the other,” Marcella said. “I took a lot of walks at the beginning. I cried a lot. I have another son, so he needs me, even though he’s 25. My husband I think needs me more.” A couple months ago, as part of her road to healing, Marcella’s psychiatrist suggested she find some way to remember the good in her lost son’s life. She decided on a bursary – not an athletic bursary, as some teachers at Mark’s alma mater would have expected, but a leadership

bursary. She was inspired by something she remembered her son’s mentorship teacher saying years ago. “I remember Mr. Thiessen saying to me in my parent-teacher interview that Mark was the highlight of the mentorship program. I’ll never forget that,” Marcella said. Scott Thiessen remembers Mark well. “He was one that looked like he wasn’t always paying attention,” he said, “but when it came time to do something, he was a leadfrom-the-front kind of guy.” Mark became Thiessen’s troubleshooter during tutorial days, when senior leadership students take on classes of Grade 8s and 9s for tutorial sessions.

If other leadership students were having trouble, Thiessen would send in Mark. “After the first couple times, the people he was working with said, ‘Mark is amazing.’ He learned everybody’s name the first day. He was stern but he was kind to everybody,” Thiessen said. That’s the Mark his family wants the world to remember when the Mark Hague Memorial Bursary is handed out to a graduating mentorship student at Burnaby North starting this year. “He was a leader his whole life,” Marcella said, “and I want his memory to live on that way.” To contribute to Mark’s bursary, contact the school at 604-664-8550.

Hospital: Long waits continued from page 1

Burnaby Hospital is currently 10.4 weeks, compared to 6.4 weeks for Fraser Health and six weeks provincially. One factor driving up that number, according to Hockney, is cataract surgeries, which make up about a third of Burnaby’s wait-list. As of March 31, 989 local patients were waiting for the eye surgery, and from Jan. 1 to March 31, the local hospital completed 497 of the procedures. The median wait time for the surgery is 14.6 weeks in Burnaby, compared to 7.9 weeks provincially and 10.7 in the rest of Fraser Health. Long wait times for cataracts and a number of other surgeries at Burnaby are driven by the needs of an aging population, according to Hockney. “Fraser Health’s population continues to grow, as does our proportion of seniors,” she said. “This means higher demand for non-urgent, age-related surgeries like cataracts, hernia or knee replacements; or emergency surgeries like hip repair. As one of Fraser Health’s largest community hospitals, Burnaby tends to see more of these types of procedures, which contribute to almost half of the overall wait list.” It’s up to individual hospitals and physicians in the region to find ways to make that demand fall within budgets. One way Fraser Health has tried to get wait lists under control is to offer surgeons operating room time at other hospitals where it is available, but not all doctors take the health authority up on the offer. “That’s their right,” Hockney said. “If they don’t want to take any extra OR time anywhere else, we can’t make them do that.” Another way Fraser Health has tried to keep wait times down is its Soonest Surgery Tool, an online tool that predicts the five surgeons most likely able to perform a specific surgical procedure sooner than others across the health authority. “We understand this is frustrating,” Hockney said of lengthy wait times. “That is why we try to work really hard with our physician partners to reduce those wait times by looking at different solutions and being innovative with them.” More funding would solve the problem, she said, but until that happens health officials will have to be “flexible and nimble” to meet the needs of a growing, aging population.

Helping hands for mothers in need

urnaby resident Amy Salmon has 15 years’ experience of working with marginalized women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. She’s an academic, an author and former coordinator of Sheway, a drop-in program for pregnant women and new moms dealing with alcohol and drug issues. Salmon is now launching a non-profit society ON MY BEAT called Bonding Jennifer Moreau With Babies to offer temporary housing and 24-hour care to marginalized moms with new babies, at risk of having their children apprehended.

Jennifer Moreau: Why do you do this kind of work? Amy Salmon: I believe every mother and child deserve the best possible start, and that start begins with a chance to stay together safely and be supported by a caring community. JM: What is Bonding With Babies? Is it a shelter? AS: Bonding With Babies wants to offer moms and their newborns more than a shelter, including support in place to help women keep their children in their care. We will provide temporary housing and assistance to moms and babies who need housing for a few months to get on their feet.

Larry Wright/burnaby now

Support for moms: Amy Salmon is a Burnaby resident who’s launching Bonding With Babies, a non-profit society that will help offer housing and care to marginalized moms with new babies.

JM: Who will stay there? AS: Women who are transitioning from the hospital after giving birth, who are in recovery from addictions, women who are leaving the corrections system, mothers who have been through a hard time are now making good life choices but don’t have the basic resources and support needed to turn those choices into a new daily reality for themselves and their babies. JM: What’s missing from the array of

services? AS: There are very, very few options available to women who do not have extended family they can live with (if a social worker decides they feel its necessary for the woman to live with others for a period of time after giving birth). Too often, these babies would be taken into foster care because mom didn’t have a safe place to go, and moms found themselves trying to regain custody in shelters and doorways.

JM: What’s the principle or key concept behind the project? AS: Bonding With Babies believes, like many others, that the health and wellbeing of women and children is closely linked to the conditions of the lives, and their ability to influence these conditions. What I have seen in the 15 years I have worked in the Downtown Eastside are people who, just like many NOW readers, expect that the government or a charity will respond to their requests for inexpensive, simple help with the basics, with

support for the decision they have made to give their new baby a better life. It’s time to start supporting those choices. JM: B.C. has a contentious history of apprehending First Nations children. Is Bonding With Babies trying to change that? AS: It’s true that more than half of all children in care are First Nations. We believe that giving moms across British Columbia, especially those who are in more remote communities (which often Babies Page 13

SFU student takes indie feature film on tour

A Simon Fraser University student is taking his independent full-length feature film on the road this spring and summer. Brendan Prost is finishing up the final semester of his bachelor of fine arts degree, with a major in film production. He’s also the writer-director-producereditor of Spaces and Reservations, his third self-financed feature film. It was shot in the summer of August 2012, between school semesters and using a small crew of student filmmakers working on a budget of $5,000. Post-production was completed through the 2012/13 school year. Now, Prost is taking the film on the road on what he calls a “DIY screening tour,” booking dates in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Victoria. Spaces and Reservations is defined as

an “intimate relationship drama,” telling the story of a young couple who are torn apart by malaise and infidelity. “It’s a really raw, candid and naturally performed film that features the talents of a number of local actors,” Prost said in an email. It stars Zach White as Jamie For a and Taylor Hastings as Kacie. trailer and more pix, They’re joined by Jennifer Kobelt, scan with Arianna McGregor, Dayleigh Nelson, Ian McAndrew, Teresa Layar Laverty and Aaron Turner. today’sdrive

Your journey starts here.

Police target risky driving over long weekend Whether you’re heading out for a camping trip or visiting family, the B.C. government, police and ICBC are asking you to give yourself plenty of time and to focus on the road this long weekend. Every year over the May long weekend, an average of two people are killed and 490 injured in 1,700 crashes throughout B.C. In the Lower Mainland, an average of 340 people are injured in 1,100 crashes. Police will be targeting all high-risk driving behaviours this long weekend including failing to yield, speeding, following too closely and ignoring a traffic control device, as part of this month’s high-risk driving campaign. While some may consider these driving behaviours harmless, they contribute to almost half (44 per cent) of all police-reported crashes that result in injuries or fatalities on our roads. “We need to shift our

mindset about what we consider risky driving behaviour,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “Failing to yield may seem harmless, but it’s a high-risk driving behaviour that leads to crashes every day on our roads. This May long weekend, pay extra attention to your own driving – take your time, leave a safe following distance and watch out for other road users, especially at intersections.”

Think ahead

If you’ll be taking a road trip, check the road and weather conditions for your entire trip at drivebc.ca before you head out. Even if the roads look clear, be realistic about your travel times since there will be more vehicles on our highways. Plan rest stops every couple of hours to avoid becoming fatigued while driving. “Our highways will be much busier over the long

weekend as people head out of town on weekend getaways,” said Todd Stone, minister of transportation and infrastructure. “Before leaving on your trip, check drivebc.ca for road and weather conditions.”

Get your vehicle ready

Long trips can be hard on your vehicle, so make sure it’s up to the drive. It’s a great time of year to give your vehicle a good checkup. Remember to check your engine oil, washer fluid and lights. Take a look at your tires too, including the spare, to make sure they are in good condition and properly inflated.

Watch out for vulnerable road users

Warmer spring weather encourages more motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians on our roads. We

all need to share our roads together safely. As a driver, we have a particular responsibility to help keep vulnerable road users safe so actively watch for other road users and make eye contact with them.

Keep your distance

Whether you’re going on a long or short trip, always maintain a safe travelling distance between vehicles. Allow at least two seconds of following distance in good weather and road conditions, and at least three seconds on highspeed roads or if you’re behind a motorcycle since it has a much shorter stopping distance. “Don’t take risks while driving that will endanger yourself or others,” said chief officer Neil Dubord, chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police traffic safety committee. For more tips, please visit icbc.com/road-safety.

Don’t go buggy about helpful pests GREEN SCENE Anne Marrison

W

hen we get out into the spring garden, we find all kinds of multi-legged aliens got there first – that’s where wasps, bees, crawling insects, spiders, larvae and miscellaneous flies are living busy lives that aren’t

always understood. For instance, lots of us have a routine spring tour outside the house walls, knocking down tiny wasps nests that are just getting started. But even the detested yellow jackets that invade picnic spreads are garden friends that feed on caterpillars, flies and many other pests. Wasp nests high up on trees or far away from contact with people should be left whenever possible. But nests above windows or doors definitely need to be removed. Wasp nests

in holes in the ground are especially dangerous. Other garden friends include lacewings, which emerge from voracious pest-eating larvae, and ladybug larvae, which have a much fiercer appetite for pests than their parents, and spiders, which eat anything they can catch. Mason bees are wonderful fruit pollinators. But they’re sometimes misunderstood because they look like fat, black blowflies (or, from a distance, black hornets). But mason bees

don’t sting. Bumblebees are likely the best pollinators of any. Their favourite sites for their small nests include holes in the ground, under discarded wood and in heaps of leaves. For most beneficial insects, it’s very important to provide some shallow water: the edge of a pond or a birdbath or saucer with a small rock in the middle for a landing site. See more on this topic at www.burnabynow.com. Send garden questions by email to amarrison@shaw.ca.

Living with chronic pain HEALTHWISE

Dr. Davidicus Wong

O

n a recent Saturday morning, I met with 15 of my patients, each of whom suffered from chronic pain. The group medical visit is a relatively new way for a physician to provide care to patients suffering from a common condition. They are more commonly used for conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure or chronic lung disease. I chose to use this special type of visit for my patients to allow sufficient time to explain new concepts in the approach to chronic pain, discuss how pain affects our lives and introduce them to new evidence-based self-management tools to improve their function and enjoyment of

life. Pain itself plays an important physiologic role. When it is acute and caused by harm or injury to the body, it provides useful information to us so that we can take immediate steps to attend to the affected area and remove it from danger. If you could feel no pain, you wouldn’t know that you had stepped on a nail or that you were developing a serious foot infection. Therefore, it would not be desirable to be completely pain-free. Similarly, both fear and sadness are normal, functional human responses. If you had no fear, you would not take appropriate care when facing dangerous situations. We feel sadness when we experience loss or when we are not satisfied with our circumstances. It can be the first step in looking at our lives, setting new goals and improving those circumstances. Healthwise: Living with pain continued from page 33

system is very efficient. When certain patterns of thought and behaviour are repeated, particular patterns of neural connections become more entrenched. If we think the same good or bad thoughts day in and day out, they become patterns of thought and limit our ability to perceive anything else. This is how we tend to narrow our points of view, become prejudiced and pigeonhole the people around us. When pain becomes chronic, it can affect every aspect of our lives – the activities of daily living, our relationships, our enjoyment of life – how we see ourselves and our future. Because pain is at the root of these negative changes, it can become the focus of our attention and our daily lives. Pain can shade our emotions and shape our thoughts. As we lose a sense of control in our lives, we may feel helpless, and helplessness begets anxiety. If we become pessimistic, we may lose hope, and hopelessness begets depression. Our emotions restrict our outlook and narrow our thoughts. When we are anxious, we catastrophize (imagin-

ing the worse), we overestimate the challenges before us, and we underestimate our ability to manage them. When we are depressed, we think negative thoughts about ourselves, our world and our future. We can get stuck in a vortex of negative thinking and emotion, and this cognitive state actually worsens the pain. There is no single pain generator in the human nervous system. The pain we experience is the product of the interplay of the original injury, the nervous system’s ability to modulate sensations, and how we cope. Even if the original injury has resolved, we can become stuck in a maladaptive reaction to pain. We now know that we need not remain stuck. Through functional MRI, we know that meditation, cognitive therapy and hypnosis can change how our brains process sensations and perceive pain. The relatively new field of neuroplasticity has shown us how we can retrain and change our own brains. The first key to mastering chronic pain and enhancing our levels of comfort is to recognize how our thoughts, emotions

and behaviours influence our experience of pain. By adopting and practising more adaptive approaches, we can increase our comfort, improve our function and again enjoy the activities we value most in our lives. After ensuring that a patient’s condition has been sufficiently investigated and appropriate medication and physical therapies applied, I now offer my patients three self-management tools. Mindfulness meditation helps us to centre our minds, increase our awareness and calm our nervous systems. Cognitive therapy trains us to uncover our underlying beliefs and assumptions, control our conscious thoughts, reframe our situation and shape our emotions. Selfhypnosis engages our subconscious minds to reinforce positive thoughts, emotions and behaviours and allows us to visualize a positive healthier future. With these three tools, we can regain our sense of control, transforming helplessness and hopelessness to engagement and empowerment. Dr. Davidicus Wong is a family physician and physician lead of the Burnaby division of family practice.

Alpha teacher takes helm of teachers’ association Cornelia Naylor staff reporter

The Burnaby Teachers’ Association has a new president. Rae Figursky, currently a math teacher at Alpha Secondary, will take the helm July 1, after being elected at the local union’s annual general meeting at Moscrop Secondary Tuesday. Figursky will steer the association through what promises to be a challenging year, with teacher job action already underway and rotating strikes looming if provincial talks don’t move forward. Outgoing president James Sanyshyn, who will step down after two years in the post, added anticipated budget cuts over the next two years and the municipal elections in November to the list of challenges Figursky will face. Sanyshyn said it will fall to Figursky and the new executive to decide whether or not to endorse trustee candidates among the Burnaby Citizens Association, which currently dominates the school board, or the new Burnaby First Coalition, a collection of former Burnaby Parents Voice, Green

party and Burnaby TEAM members that Sanyshyn called “very bizarre bedfellows.” “I wish the next group of people, who are stewarding us through difficult times, the best of luck,” Sanyshyn told the NOW. Figursky, however, is no rookie. A BTA past president from the 1990s, she has been involved with the local executive on and off for the last four or five years, according to Sanyshyn, mostly in the role of secretary. Tuesday’s meeting, attended by about 260 teachers, also saw Frank Bonvino acclaimed as first vice-president, Moscrop teacher Leanne Sjodin elected as second vice-president, Stride teacher Sharon Freeman elected as secretary, and hospital and homebound teacher Patti Jukes acclaimed as treasurer. Jennifer Heighton (Nelson) and Toni Grewal (Burnaby South) were acclaimed as elementary and secondary reps respectively. Burnaby South teacher on call Shanee Prasad was acclaimed as the BTA’s Vancouver district labour rep. Daniel Tétrault (Moscrop), Richard Storch (Burnaby North) and Trina Moulin (Byrne Creek) were elected as local reps.

Clan claim 12 meet medals

The Lakers got back the ball quickly and replied with the first of Vincent’s five tries. Burnaby Lake led 15-5 at the interval. “Each time we attacked with the ball, whether if was two, three, four, or five metres, we were consistently going over that gain line,” said Vincent. “That’s where the heart came from.” That heart was evident all over the pitch, as Burnaby continually challenged the UVic tackling with punishing attacks and a first-to-the-breakdown mentality. The toll it took on the Island visitors was clearly evident early in the second half, when Vincent picked up where he left off in the first, hoofing it 65 metres for his fourth try of the game. Vincent then finished off a nice setup by fullback Nolan Shelley before leaving the game with Burnaby up 27-5. The Lakers rarely took their collective foot off the pedal, running in three more tries before the day was done. UVic, to its credit, continued to battle, scoring a late try. “We’ve been focusing on defence all week. There is so much heart. There are 15 players for every man on the pitch,” Vincent added.

Freshman Oliver Jorgensen led Simon Fraser University with two longdistance medals at the Great Northwest outdoor track and field championships. Jorgensen won a gold medal in the men’s steeplechase and a bronze at 5,000 metres. Sarah Sawatsky placed second in the women’s 800m just shy of her season-best time in 2:09.26. She claimed a second silver medal in the 4x400m relay. Cameron Proceviat of Burnaby was also a runnerup in the men’s 800 and helped SFU’s men’s 1,600m relay team to a bronze. Joel Webster and Daniel Kelloway placed second and third, respectively, in the men’s 400m. Chantel Desch posted her best time of the season in the women’s 400m final, placing second in a time of 56.61. Freshman thrower Peter Behncke had a personal best in the hammer throw, placing second with a 50.16m toss. Ella Brown of Burnaby finished third in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.33m. Freshman Alex Wu also placed third in the men’s long jump at 6.78m. Burnaby Mountain grad Natasha Kianipour was fourth in the women’s 100m and 1x100m relay.

Burnaby Lake’s Stu Vincent celebrated his first-ever senior cup with a five-try performance in the Ceili’s Cup men’s first division rugby final. The English import ran in the team’s first five scores in a dominating 4810 victory over the defending champion University of Victoria Norsemen at Klahanie last Saturday. The provincial title was the second-ever for the 131 Div. 1 league champions. The first came in 2011. The all-blue was quick up on its defensive marking all day, allowing the UVic students little momentum in attack. What the Islanders did get was largely due to the play of scrum half Crosby Stewart and standoff half Connor Llewellyn. Giuseppe Laudisio, who had a career seven tries earlier in the season against the Meralomas, and former Canadian and World Cup international Mike James, nearly broke free of wouldbe tacklers to get the ball within 10 metres of the line. But Stewart broke a long run, and only a clever play by Laudisio, who stripped the ball with a try-saving tackle, saved an early UVic try.

To AA B.C.s: St. Thomas More’s Giulia Repole, left, gathers the ball in the Knights’ 2-1 shootout win over Sutherland in AA zone girls’ qualifying.

Knights going back to B.C.s The St. Thomas More Knights defeated Sutherland 2-1 on penalty kicks to earn a berth back to the B.C. high school AA girls’ soccer provincials on Monday. The Knights had much of the play but little to show for it until Kassia Hayek tied the contest, volleying in a Bridgette Ferrara free kick taken from 40 metres out in the final 10 minutes of

regulation time. The Burnaby independent went on to win 5-4 on penalty kicks. “Honestly, we controlled the play, but we showed the resolve to come back,” said STM coach Doug Corbett. “Getting the No. 1 seed is good. It should give us a good pool.” The provincials will be played in Penticton from May 28 to 31.

Injunction withdrawn; league names Metro soccer teams Tom Berridge sports editor

The feuding Burnaby youth soccer association and the Burnaby Selects mutually agreed to drop further legal proceedings. An interim injunction filed by the Selects against the Burnaby district back in March had put the fate of who controlled the Metro soccer program in the district in the hands of the B.C.

supreme court. This week’s official announcement gives the two sides time to try and work out their differences, while working towards fielding Metro teams from district feeder clubs for the upcoming 2014/15 season. Burnaby district chair John Berry said it was time to get on with preparing teams in time for the upcoming soccer season, and to put off the larger question of how the Metro program will be

run to a later date. “Certainly, this has been a distraction,” Berry said, adding, “It has opened doors with the feeder clubs to enter (Metro) teams.” As a result, 11 teams from three member clubs have been OK’d by the Metro league board to put forward sides for next season. The Burnaby Selects were allowed to grandfather in their under-18 girls’ team for a final season, while a u-13 Burnaby

Girls club side and u-14 and -15 girls’ teams from Cliff Avenue were also approved. On the boys’ side, Cliff Avenue put forward teams at u-13 and u-15, while the Burnaby Selects want to run a full slate from u-13 to u-17/-18. All but the u-15 boys were resolved. “We put forward both (Cliff and Burnaby) teams to the league. In the case of u-13 boys, they accepted both teams. As for u-15, they have so far accepted just one

team,” said Berry. A final decision on the u-15s will be made at a later date. Calling it a “changed landscape”, Berry said the current cooperation between member clubs to run Metro teams has not resolved the initial issue. “We have not made any agreement on the longer term. We put a greater focus on getting the 2014/15 season underway,” said Berry. “We have not resolved what we’re doing in 2015/16.”

North to B.C.s on long shot Tom Berridge sports editor

Allyson Dickson’s game-winning goal was a “long shot in more ways than one. The Grade 11 midfielder launched a towering kick half the length of the soccer pitch to give the Burnaby North Vikings a 4-3 victory in overtime over West Vancouver to advance to the B.C. high school girls’ soccer championships. Dickson’s answer to a

Hail Mary pass in football came at an opportune time for the BurWest league champs. Leading 3-1 after Jessica Filipelli’s second goal of the game on a terrific strike, and great touch pass from Megan Lai, from outside the 18-yard box in the final 10 minutes of play, North surrendered two late goals to the Highlanders. During the break, North keeper Michella Grippo, who sustained a nasty knock to her already

injured knee in Monday’s loss to Argyle, rallied the troops at the interval. “I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but we’re going to get the next a goal first and win it,” said Grippo. Ashley Bristow had a good chance to do just that in the first OT, just missing the near post on a leftfooted effort. Lai tallied North’s other marker. The provincials run May 29 to 31 in Vancouver.

Chaarrge:

The Cariboo Hill Chargers, seen in stripes in a recent semifinal win over McNair, lost a close Tier 2 AA final 3129 to Seycove at Brockton Oval on Wednesday. Moscrop also lost in the Tier 2 AAA final 15-0 to St. George’s.

Three late second-half goals sunk EDC FC Burnaby’s hopes for a first-ever under21 Provincial Cup. EDC settled for a disappointing silver medal following a 3-0 loss to league and defending Cup champion Guildford FC at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West last Saturday. The fortune-swinging moment appeared to occur midway through the second half of a scoreless match to that point following a long shot from a Guildford player that clanged off the Burnaby crossbar. Moments later, as if buoyed by the against-the-run opportunity, Iwan Jecanski slotted what would prove to be the gamewinning goal from the penalty spot low to the left corner of the goal after James Najman was taken down from behind in

the box. Guildford kept the pressure on, missing minutes later with a deflection off a shot on goal that resulted in a corner kick. Shortly after that, Jecanski attacked again, crossing a ball through the penalty area to teammate Nick Favia who directed the pass to the far corner leaving no chance for Burnaby keeper Trevor Hughes. Andrew Macvey counted a third goal for Guildford after EDC suffered the first of its three late sending-offs in the contest. “The game was going nowhere. We were messing around with the ball, and we didn’t seem to have much energy or intensity,” said EDC u-21 head coach John Penman. “Normally, we’re good on the counter attack.” But it was Guildford’s overall aggressiveness on the ball that won the day. “We just seemed to lose our way,” added Penman.

Clan lands five in CFL draft Former New Westminster Hyack MVP Casey Chin is now a member of the B.C. Lions. The four-year Simon Fraser University starting linebacker was selected in the third round, 27th overall, by the Lions in the Canadian Football League draft on Tuesday. “It’s definitely a little surreal, even a day after,” said Chin. “I was kind of at the point I was pretty sure I would be drafted, so I was happy to wait and go to B.C.” Chin was one of five SFU players taken in the draft, including offensive lineman Matthias Goossen, who went second overall to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Defensive lineman Dylan Roper was drafted by B.C. in the sixth round. Tore Corrado also went in the sixth round to Toronto. Defensive back Derek Jones went to the Bombers in the fourth round.
