IS IT MY TURN?

A canine visitor appears to be slightly uncertain about the whole church experience during a special pet blessing service at All Saints Anglican Church on Saturday, Oct. 7. The special service is held in recognition of the feast day of St. Francis on Oct. 4. St. Francis was known for his love of animals and his belief that all creatures were creations of God. Burnaby churches are among those who mark his feast day with the pet blessing tradition. For more photos see page 3 and check out www. burnabynow.com. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER

MIGRATING BIRDS INJURED

‘This is not normal’ – wildlife expert says By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. saw an “extreme” number of migratory birds smashing into windows last month. Staff saw about 300 wounded birds, including song sparrows, red-breasted sap suckers and some woodpeckers, according to hospital manager Janelle Stephenson.

“This is not normal,” she told the NOW. “Usually, we get a lower number of birds in September. This year, during migration, we found an influx from an average of five animals a day to up to 40 a day.” Stephenson suspects the higher-than-usual numbers may have to do with the forest fires that burned in B.C.’s Interior this past summer. She said more birds made their way to the Lower Mainland as a result.

“Also, there’s a lot of urbanization in the Lower Mainland. Urbanization is huge, population (increases), habitat encroachment,” she added. Most of the birds were found outside living room windows or alongside tall buildings, Stephenson noted. Should anyone come across a wounded feathered friend, the best thing to do is to put it in a box that is covered.Take the box

Give him a few minutes to settle down and then bring him into us, or call us on our hotline.” Stephenson noted, when birds hit windows, it can cause severe head trauma. “With head trauma, their central nervous Continued on page 9

All God’s creatures CELEBRATING A SAINT:

About 20 people turned out to a pet blessing at All Saints Anglican Church in Burnaby on Oct. 7. The service was led by Rev. Justin Cheng, who invited parishioners to bring in their furry friends. The church has been performing the blessing for a few years now. It honours St. Francis of Assisi, who was known as the patron saint of animals and routinely performed blessing ceremonies. All Saints Anglican Church saw a host of cute cats and dogs come through its doors, including a tabby and a dachshund. There were even a couple of bunnies on hand. Churches around the world participated in the annual tradition, which is usually celebrated on or around Oct. 4, St. Francis’ feast day. PHOTOS JENNIFER GAUTHIER

City now Folks fond of their felines

Life’s good if you’re a cat living in Burnaby. The city is home to the most pampered cats in Canada, according to Amazon Canada. The accolade is part of Amazon Canada’s annual list of the top cities in Canada with the most pampered pets. Overall, Burnaby ranked fifth behind London, Ont., Calgary and Edmonton, Alta.Vancouver came

in first with the most pampered pets in the country, according to a press release from Amazon. “Not only did Burnaby make its return to the top 20 this year after falling out last year, but residents ranked the highest in purchases for cat products. From beds to grooming to litter, they were all about the cattitude this year,” noted the release.

The rankings are compiled by comparing the number of items purchased for pets – on a per capita scale – from August 2016 to August 2017 on amazon.ca. Only cities with more than 100,000 residents were included, and sales data was collected from products for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and small animals. – Cayley Dobie

TRANS MOUNTAIN PIPELINE EXPANSION

Hearing notification is on the way

Residents approved to take part in hearings to be notified by Oct. 17 Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Folks who were granted a detailed route hearing for the Trans Mountain expansion project should be notified by Kinder Morgan by next week. After reading the Oct. 6 issue of the NOW, David Huntley learned, to his surprise, he was one of the successful applicants chosen by the National Energy Board to participate in the pipeline hearings. To qualify for a hearing, statements needed to show a direct link between the route and the applicant’s

lands and how those lands could be “adversely affected” by the pipeline expansion. The NEB received 452 statements of opposition to the proposed route, with 135 related to the Burnaby segment. Of those 135, 28 were granted a detailed route hearing “The National Energy Board has done it again. It has made a decision on an application that I made for a hearing about the pipeline route but has not bothered to tell me,” Huntley wrote in an email. “Readers may recall the same thing happened before

when hundreds of people applied to be interveners or commenters at the original NEB hearing on the Kinder Morgan pipeline application. “There were many people months later who did not know whether or not their application had been accepted because the NEB had not told them. Once again, the NEB is not acting as the public servant that it should be.” NEB spokesperson James Stevenson said it’s Kinder Morgan’s job, not the national energy regulator’s, to notify successful applicants. Opinion now OUR VIEW

God or no God, we’re failing on this one

We suspect there may be some skepticism generated by our page 3 photo spread on the blessing of animals at a Burnaby church. Does God really part the clouds, look down on a wee brick structure on Royal Oak Avenue in this particular city on earth and hear a kind minister’s words about the four-legged companions his parishioners brought to him for blessing? But perhaps that isn’t even the point of it all. Per-

haps it’s but an excuse to take a moment to notice how we share this planet with some of the most interesting, and, yes, even companionable animals. Whether we thank God for creating them, or merely thank them for being, at least we’re grateful for them. In either case, we think it’s at the very least a sweet service and, at the most, a noble one. The Bible says: “God made the beasts of the earth

after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’” Some have taken it to

mean that human beings “rule” over Earth’s creatures as some sort of Godgiven right to use animals as we want to. Others have taken it to mean that we are responsible for maintaining and protecting “every creeping thing.” If God’s expectations for us were to be good caretakers of other living things, we’re failing. There are fewer species on Earth every year. Our impact on the environment is not good, to

say the least. And then there are the “human beings” who hunt animals just for the thrill of it.We’re pretty sure God didn’t intend a wealthy hunter in khakis to be killing rhinos for the fun of it. As science uncovers more and more about the creatures we share this planet with, we are finding out that they are complex creatures. Many with intelligent, meaningful behaviour that contradicts the oft-re-

peated phrase “dumb animals.”These are creatures that communicate with each other, create songs for each other, adopt the young of other animals, act as therapists for humans, and do so much more. Whether you believe in God or not, you can’t help but look with wonder at the creatures we share this planet with, feel concern for their future – and, better yet, want to do your part to help them.

MY VIEW DERMOD TRAVIS

Money games continue in B.C. The B.C. government’s proposed public subsidies for political parties may be hogging the media spotlight, but there are some other important aspects to the government’s proposed changes on how political parties and elections are financed. The legislation proposes a cut of 25 per cent to the province’s campaign spending limits. For a political party running a full-slate of 87 candidates, the overall limit would drop from roughly $11.6 million to $8.7 million. It’s a start, but at an estimated $2.75 per voter, it would still be twice that of the federal limit and higher than Quebec ($1.37), Ontario ($2.08) and Alberta ($2.43). Given the incredible generosity behind the government’s proposed transitional allowance to support political parties as they wean themselves off big money, perhaps a bigger cut to the spending limit would be in order. Setting a personal contribution limit, as the bill does, is a bit of a mug’s game. The best result is likely one where no party is happy with the limit, but they’ll all live with it. In an opinion piece in The Globe and Mail, former Attorney General Geoff Plant wrote: “(Bill 3’s) problems start with its most basic feature, the $1,200 annual contribution limit. “For a well-off married couple with adult children who happen to share their parents’ political views, there’s an opportunity to donate thousands of dollars a year, easily affordable for

the well-to-do, but entirely out of reach for most citizens.” Tackling one of the tougher areas of campaign finance reform, the government may have found the right balance between Canada’s Charter of Rights and political accountability when it comes to third-party spending in the lead-up to B.C. election campaigns. In the last election, John Winter – former CEO of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce – was the public face to Future Prosperity B.C., a pop-up third party that went dark in the days leading to the dropping of the writ, thereby conveniently circumventing current rules which require any third party that advertises during an election campaign to disclose its campaign spending and all its donors in the six months preceding the election. The government has rightly steered away from setting a spending limit for third parties outside of a campaign period and instead opted for applying the same contribution limits and criteria as those for political parties, while legislating a 60-day pre-campaign period where third parties will be required to disclose donors and spending to Elections B.C. Something not touched on in the legislation, but contained in the former government’s bill, is the issue of donor disclosure. The government would seem to be content with the $250 annual threshold, while the Liberals wanted to Continued on page 7

So long to local Safeway Royal Heights residents were upset when Canada Safeway announced it was closing its smallest store in B.C. in January. The company said the store, at the corner of Royal Oak and Rumble, was “no longer economically viable.”That was bad news for longtime area resident Gordon Denman. “It’s a real inconvenience for me and my neighbours, some of whom are single, elderly people with bad legs,” he said. The next closest store was about one kilometre away on Kingsway. But besides being the smallest in size, the Royal Heights Safeway also had the lowest sales volume of any store in the provincial chain.

Opinionnow NEB is failing the public Dear Editor: The National Energy Board has done it again. It has made a decision on an application that I made for a hearing about the pipeline route, but has not bothered to tell me. I found out about it when I read my name in the Oct. 6 Burnaby NOW. Readers may recall the same thing happened before when hundreds of people applied to be interveners or commenters at the original NEB hearing on the Kinder Morgan pipeline application. Electoral change needed Dear Editor: Keith Baldrey is worried that first past the post will not win the electoral reform referendum to be held next year. He’s probably right to worry. According to a recent poll, two-thirds of British Columbians agree that we should adopt proportional representation. That’s because the current system has clearly shown itself to be sub-par over and over again. Most people would agree that the number of seats each party wins should match the voter support for that party. A party that gets 20 per cent of the vote should win 20 per cent of the seats. If they do not, then those 20 per cent of voters are not fairly represented. Our current system doesn’t work like that.

The difference between the level of voter support and the number of seats that a party wins can be quite substantial. For instance, we regularly get majority governments that are based on 40 per cent of the vote, so this kind of distortion has big consequences. Maybe that’s the reason most people think we should adopt a new system. That’s certainly the reason that first past the post should lose the referendum. It’s not because the government is “stacking the deck,” as Mr. Baldrey charges. It’s because voters recognize that the current voting system fails to get results that reflect our votes. On the other hand, I guess defenders of the current system must like the fact that they can win a majority with only 40 per cent. Iain Macanulty, Burnaby

We need real disclosure

Continued from page 6 cut it to $100.The Liberals are right. And with a ban on corporate and union donations, disclosure will have to go further than it has in the past to capture a donor’s employer to help ensure that “straw men” are not used as a means to get around the ban. Geoff Plant is dead on when he writes: “The outrage over the fundraising practices of the former governing party is a big reason they are no longer in government.” It’s a lesson all parties should heed. Dermod Travis is the executive director of Integrity B.C.

Citynow More birds need help Continued from page 1 system is damaged, and also we do see bruising along the apex of the keel; we see fractures in the wings and shoulders,” said Stephenson. “Often, the secondary injury is that a cat will pick them up after they hit the window because they’re easy prey.” The influx of birds has “definitely” put a strain on staffing levels at the Burnaby-based animal hospital. Usually, the centre runs with two staff members and between six and eight volunteers. Now, that number is around 16 to 30 volunteers. “Sometimes we don’t have all the volunteers because they need a lot

of training and everything, so sometimes we’ll be lower, but we make it work.” Stephenson encourages residents to take preventive measures if they see birds smashing into their windows. There are window decals and stickers out there that are clear to the human eye but not to a bird’s eye. Moving bushes, trees and feeders away from windows also helps. A temporary solution is putting up construction paper or coloured masking tape. For more information, call the wildlife helpline at 604-526-7275.

Injured: A whitethroated sparrow is being tended to at the Wildlife Rescue Association in Burnaby after striking a window. It suffered head trauma and blood was pooling in its mouth when staff found it. It has since been stabilized but needs more care.

Artsnow Robot sculptures in new Deer Lake exhibit Art lovers, save the date: Deer Lake Art Gallery is presenting a new show, Worlds of Wonder, from Nov. 4 to 25. The show includes metal sculpture and digital art, featuring the work of Nancie Green and Lynne Taylor Fahnestalk. Fahnestalk is a professional illustrator and cartoonist whose cartooning background paved the way for her robot obsession. Now she makes robot sculptures from upcycled metal objects – held together only by nuts, bolts, screws and washers, with no welding or gluing involved. Green is an artist who uses photography and computer manipulation of photos to create robots and otherworldly imagery. An opening reception is on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., and there will be an artist demo and talk on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 and 2 p.m. Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave.

A brother-sister duo from Burnaby is part of the Canadian contingent for the upcoming world dance championships in Germany. Anthony Juo, 8, and his 12-year-old sister Eugenie, who study with Dance Collective, are heading off with Team Canada West to the International Dance Organization’s world show dance championships in Reisa, Germany from Nov. 20 to 25. They’re among 50 of the best young dancers from Western Canada to join the team, which is led by head choreographer Danielle Gardner – a past finalist on SoYou ThinkYou Can Dance and a former world champion dancer herself. The team dancers range in age from seven to 19, and they’re spending 11 weeks training as a group for the chance to represent the country. Bonnie Dyer,Team Canada Dance national director, says Canada has been quite successful in all disciplines at the world championships, thanks to the high standard of training that local studios offer. “It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together with one goal, and that is to represent Canada,” she said

in a press release. Check out www.teamcanadadance.com for all the details.

Celebrity sightings in Burnaby in 1987 were likely skewed a bit by the arrival of Halifax native Matthew Johnson in April. The 21-year-old was the spitting image of Burnaby-born-andraised superstar Michael J. Fox just as Fox was at the height of his Family Ties and Back to the Future popularity. Johnson’s sister had been the first to point out his uncanny resemblance to the teen idol a couple years before Johnson moved to Burnaby for work. Prompted by his dad, Johnson had even won a $500 National Enquirer Michael J. Fox lookalike contest, beating out 229 other doppelgängers.

BC’s Captivating Coastal Towns BY MICHELLE PENTZ GLAVE

It’s not hard to find quaint, quirky towns on the ocean in BC, a province with nearly 26,000 km (16,000 mi) of Pacific coastline, some 40,000 islands, and distinctive laid-back West Coast culture. Each one has its own style and vibe, of course. These top towns will surprise and delight you—and undoubtedly make you want to stay longer. TOFINO

CLAIM TO FAME: North America’s best surf town,

according to Outside magazine

TRY: The local seaweed beer & lingcod burgers

If there’s one favorite coastal town everyone raves about, it’s Tofino on Vancouver Island’s wild West Coast. It’s hard to beat the combo of expansive sandy shores (see: Long Beach), strong rip currents for primo wave riding, Tolkien-esque ancient cedar forest dripping in velvety emerald mosses and lichens, the casual upstart style, and bohemian spirit. This popular town is cute, filled with funky food trucks and stained glass artists, and the surrounding Clayoquot Sound environs, untouched and untamed. Hike, watch for whales, soak in natural hot springs, and learn how to surf. Join pilgrims in winter who watch dramatic storms blast across the churning Pacific. STEVESTON

CLAIM TO FAME: One of the largest salmon runs

in North America

TRY: Sea urchin at the wharf

Once the area’s biggest fishing port and salmon cannery back in the 1800s powered by Japanese immigrants, seaside village Steveston, though officially part of Richmond now, still feels true to its roots. At the mouth of the Fraser River, it’s within easy reach of metro Vancouver, but with all the small-town allure of a maritime community. Pick up fresh-off-the-boat prawns, halibut, crab, and salmon on the docks; stroll the historic village, marina with 600 fishing boats (Canada’s largest fleet), and shipyards; and learn more at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, a National Historic Site.

COWICHAN BAY

CLAIM TO FAME: North America’s first Cittaslow

community

TRY: A Euro loaf at True Grain bakery

Step into the slow lane in sleepy Cowichan Bay, a hamlet of floating residences and houses on stilts clustered around a cheery pier. Artists, craftsmen, and family farmers have reinvented the historic

buildings of this former 1850s Hudson’s Bay fort near Duncan on southern Vancouver Island, making it an idyllic stop for foodies in search of artisan cheese, boutique wine, and organic, stone milled bread. It’s also a lovely spot to visit via boat — or drive in, stay at a B&B, and sea kayak the Cowichan Bay Estuary, looking out for some 200 bird species. PRINCE RUPERT

CLAIM TO FAME: Huge, picturesque harbour TRY: A café in waterfront Cow Bay and a drink at

Charley’s Lounge Don’t be surprised if you see grizzlies fishing on the shore, humpbacks swimming off the coast, and deer trotting along the sidewalk in downtown Prince Rupert, a proudly working class port town. This is your launch pad for outdoor adventure and wildlife observation on BC’s remote northwest coast, just shy of the Alaska border. On Kaien Island, Prince Rupert is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is often shrouded

Cox Bay near Tofino in mist. That’s thanks to its commanding outlook over the Skeena River and fjord, mountain, and rainforest setting, which means lots of rainbows, too. Meet the down-to-earth, hardworking folks, delve into First Nations heritage at the longhousestyle Museum of Northern BC, and look for bears at nearby Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary. POWELL RIVER

CLAIM TO FAME: Reinvented historic paper mill

company town

TRY: A flick at 1928 Patricia Theatre, Canada’s

oldest vintage movie house still rolling Forward-thinking creatives realized a decade-plus

ago that Powell River was poised to be the next “it” spot and moved in to transform the place, once the globe’s largest newsprint pulp and paper mill town. The result is a trendy townsite of young eccentrics — big on arts, open-air markets, and festivals — situated at the top of the Sunshine Coast, a laidback retiree community of forest, mountains, and sandy shores. Sightsee from the water, sea kayak around nearby islands Savary and Cortes, hike hut to hut, and scuba dive. Then peruse the landmark industrial buildings now filled with colorful galleries, studios, shops, and cafés, and sample the craft suds at Belgian-style Townsite Brewing.

At the root of the greatest problems in the world today is an illusion of disconnection. A baby is conceived and matures within the body of her mother, and even after the umbilical cord is

clamped and cut, she does not soon see herself as separate from her mother or the rest of the world. Sometime in toddlerhood, she conceives an evolving separate self, and the idea of a small and separate ego is reinforced by society. We come to recognize differences and separateness from others, and the rift between us grows deeper and

wider with age.Though we long to belong, our identification with gender, race, class and social groups serve to separate us further from others outside our false boundaries. With the Senators travelling to Vancouver to play the Canucks Tuesday night, Turris was able to attend the Steelers game Sunday evening at the Burnaby Winter Club, where the team announced its top 10 all-time players. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
